Mark, Robert and crew did a new 24' x 31' garage slab for me last fall. It was complicated: lot sloped south, garage floor needed to slope north, new plumbing needed to be covered but not too high, level room in back, and bathroom completely separate level with floor drain. Robert knows slopes and levels inside and out; I'm knowlegeable about construction, but I had a hard time following; I asked lots of questions, and then checked out all the lines and grades for myself. Even on the day of the pour, Robert was willing to accommodate adjustments. They told me to trust them, but concrete is one case where any mistakes are literally set in stone. And, I don't trust yelp reviews completely because most people don't know enough about construction to know if things are done right even after the fact. (I'm not the easiest person to work for.) I've done many, many concrete jobs before (foundations, retaining walls, slabs, underpinning...) but I've never had any concrete contractor as experienced, knowledgeable and particular about quality. Seeing this team work together during the pour was a thing of beauty. With concrete you have to work fast and they were like a well oiled machine. Everyone knew their part and did it. Mark is a good guy. I had a neighbor complain about a broken sidewalk in front of their house and while the inspector was out he sited all the houses on the street. I called Mark and he gave a great quote. They did a good job on the sidewalk. I would defiantly call him again. read more

I had root damage on the sidewalk in front of my house. The tree was removed and Mark did the concrete work. In the process of removing the sidewalk, one of his crew hit the main water line and damaged some other plumbing work under the walk. After the concrete was poured it dried unevenly, so the walkway is two different colors of grey. The sidewalk then incurred two large cracks within two weeks of being being poured. The channeling between the squares is not as deeply grooved as the walkway on the rest of the street. read more

If you need concrete work done, give Mark a call. His estimate was the most honest and realistic for my sidewalk repair. A couple of other bids were more than twice what Mark quoted. I had about two squares that needed to be removed and replaced. On top of that I had a bit of tree root to deal with. Mark quoted a great price and completed the work in a timely manner. Before giving the job to Sunset Concrete I asked him to lower his price by 5%, because another guy gave me a lower price. Mark agreed on the phone and we scheduled the work. First day of work Mark shows up and says he can't honor the discount. I was stuck because other things depended upon our schedule so I reluctantly agreed even though I thought it was petty to not honor a $125 discount on a $2500 job. There were no changes in the job; we gave them detailed drawings with measurements to the nearest inch; so there's really no reason to have not honored the bid. Strike 1. Five adjacent properties were involved in this City-approved project. The neighbors joined efforts to do the project together. Excavating the first property, Mark hit and broke a water line. Mark knew there was a water line down there but wasn't sure exactly where. They promptly had it repaired at their expense. The next property to be excavated, trying to make up for lost time, they used a mechanical excavator and broke yet another water line! This was too much. They should have learned from their first mistake as all the water lines were at about the same depth. A sensible contractor would have dug by hand a trench 12" deep to first locate the water line and then dig around it. Strike 2! The third property to be excavated, Mark refused to excavate around the water line saying that there were rocks and rubble mixed with the native Sunset District sand and he had only agreed to remove sand. This was a very small part of the job, but I and a friend spent about 45 minutes digging this area out ourselves at a frantic pace because Mark said he was leaving as soon as they finished the rest of their work; I had to dig the last remaining section and load the sand and rocks in his truck before he left. Strike 3 for a very uncooperative attitude. read more

Sunset are very clean, very professional, and very fast. More importantly they don't overdo a job and seem to underquote. We have a large corner house and needed to replace and repair two sidewalk frontages, including enlarge tree basins and prune tree roots. Sunset did this job in 2 days with large machinery that made less noise and less mess than jackhammers. My neighbors chose to go with another well-known concrete company (whose name starts with a 'G'). They had only 20ft of pavement to repair, but it took more than 4 days, created a huge mess, and cost $300 MORE than my job. Mark completely redid the concrete in the front of our house. He did a great job. His pricing is super competitive. I would definitely refer him to a friend and use him again. I see other reviews about Mark being hard to get ahold of, which can be true at times. For me, the much lower cost of working with Mark was worth an extra follow up call or two. I used Mark to cut a slab of concrete in front of my pad some time ago. He was responsive, professional and is generally a nice guy. He is recommended by the Friends of Urban Forestry which is how I found him in the first place. Although it takes him 36-48 hrs to respond to voicemails, the work he does is very good. read more

Mark & Co did a great job on my sidewalk repair in the Richmond. 11 squares at a great price! They tinted the concrete a little bit to get closer to the color of the existing sidewalk, cut out the squares with a cement saw for clean edges and did an incredible finish job, coming back several times to work on it. They even came back the next morning on a Sunday to check to see if anyone had carved in it overnight so they could do a quick repair. Fortunately it didn't happen. I chose Mark Foti's Sunset Concrete business on the basis of a recommendation from the company that maintains my sidewalk trees at a building I own in San Francisco. The project included removing about 125 squares or over 1,000 square feet of existing sidewalk pavement, repaving, and installing 4"X6" pavers for sidewalk landscaping around the trees. Mark coordinated well with the tree maintenance company whose job it was to replace an existing dead tree and trim an extensive root system before paving. Mark's price was reasonable, the project was completed in a very timely and organized fashion, and the result is excellent.
