I feel Sunset violated the NADA Code of Ethics in several instances when I traded in my car for a new Ford. Specifically with regard to this phrase at http://www.nada.org/Publications/CodeOfEthics/Guide.htm: "At this dealership, the sales professionals will at all times...be honest and truthful when dealing with customers." These violations occurred (1) before, in the mailed piece I received, (2) during the sales process, and (3) afterward when I came in as a disgruntled customer. (1) Before: The mailing I received contained a copy of a purported email from the owner of Sunset Ford to the sales manager, saying that he had a buyer for my car and giving the manager permission to give up to 110% of KBB value for my trade-in. Attached was a "handwritten" Post-it® note from the sales manager, asking me to call him. Based on the envelope, the phone number given, and an industry article detailing this technique I know this was not a personal note but rather a data-mined advertisement sent from California. (2) During the sales process: The Sunset Ford sales manager quoted me a much lower value for my trade-in than I had found earlier that day on KBB. When I questioned it, the sales personnel insisted their finding was correct and convinced me that I had made a mistake. When checking for my mistake later, I discovered I had not been in error. (3) Afterward: When I came back later with proof of the discrepancy, they refused to completely make good on the difference. Instead, they changed the condition of my trade-in from "Very Good" to "Good" and gave me a partial trade-in adjustment based on that reduced condition. (2 and 3) During and after: They repeatedly insisted that they could only sell my trade-in for around $16,500. Yet, they priced it at $20,185 on their lot. There were numerous other, less severe infractions as the salesman and senior sales manager attempted to explain their position by morphing what actually happened to a different version of events. In my mind, I should have received the 110% of the "Very Good" condition KBB value of my trade-in. This is the percentage detailed in the mailing and the condition we based the car's value on in my original agreement. They do not agree and knew I was angry about the revised agreement. The difference between that amount and what I received is $1,798. Despite the senior sales manager and me sending notes with my grievance to upper management (owners), I got no response from them. This is a supposedly reputable dealership with a long history and it is beyond disappointing that (a) they stoop to these levels in the first place and (b) refuse to make good on their "mistaken" blue book valuation of my car. Needless to say, my family and I--as well as numerous friends--will not be shopping at Sunset Ford in the future. read more

Was the easiest lease/purchase I have made - even better service than from the high end import guys including the Acura's I have purchased from Munganast and much better service than the BMW purchased from Suntrup West County. Historically speaking, I've not been a fan of Ford. My wife had a 2001 Ford Taurus when we met, and I hated pretty much everything about that car. I've considered Fords several times before, but I've never had a great experience at the dealerships. The cars also have, historically, had less bang for the buck. Fast forward to last Saturday (05/23/15). It had come time to replace the A6, and my wife was wanting something more economical. We set out to get an Impreza, but the dealership wasn't interested in our business. We then set out to look at the Mazda 3. While on our way to the Mazda dealership, we passed by Sunset Ford, and, having recently test driven a Fiesta ST, we decided to stop in a try out a Focus SE Hatchback. Good reviews, economy (both fuel and finance), and good looks were what convinced my wife that it could be the one. We stopped over, and we were helped by Steve Lower. Steve worked with us to find a car that would meet our needs, handed us the keys, and we were off. We got back from the test drive, and my wife was impressed. She liked the car much more than the Impreza we had just driven, but she also wanted to test drive the Mazda 3. Steve was understanding, didn't push us at all, and said he'd be there if we made it back. He left a really good impression. We went and test drove the Mazda. While I would say that it was more of a "driver's car", it was a bit more bare bones and less comfortable than the Ford. We also didn't like our salesman as much. My wife made the call. We were going to go back and get the Focus. We went back, looked the car over one more time, and started working with Steve to get everything finished up. Steve made the process as simple as possible. He was very straight forward and made both of use feel very comfortable. Once his part was done, we moved onto finance, and that went smooth as butter as well. After the sale was finalized, Steve took the time to go out to the car with us and get my wife's phone set up and give us one final tour of the features. All in all, I was really impressed. Steve did a great job, and I'd recommend anyone looking for a new car to go and see him. Sunset and Steve sold me something that I never thought I'd buy, and I'm totally ok with that. I was also impressed with the amount of features that the car had for the price. It's roomy, comfortable, and at a price no one can argue about. As the car is brand new, I haven't had to get it serviced yet. When the time comes to get serviced, I'll post an update and let everyone know how that goes. read more

Purchased a new Ford Escape titanium and it had computer issues. First the remote start then the seat memory only to sudden accelerate in reverse when using parallel park application striking another car. Dealer would not acknowledge the issues and when I contacted corporate they said I applied the gas and brake simultaneously 274 times. The vehicle had 73 miles on it when purchased but I never did this. They refuse to admit anything it was traded ASAP. Avoid these liars. read more

Had an appointment to get my oil changed at 10am. I was told that having an appointment gets your car in before anyone waiting. An hour later they are just getting started on my oil change!! Oh and the battery that I just purchased from them a few months ago? Failed some sort of test. So now I get to wait even longer to see if it fails another test so the battery can be replaced!!??? I purchased my 2019 Escape from Sunset because I had used Costco's pricing program do to the fact that my 2014 Escape was totaled. While the buying process was fine I received a letter from Ford Motor Company about a Customer Satisfaction Program 19B37. When I called to set something up was told that I would have to leave my ONLY vehicle overnight and would not get a rental. This is not a option for me since it is the only vehicle I have. The other option I was finally given was to bring it in late afternoon after 3pm and that it would take a couple of hours. I decided to give Marshall Ford a call this is where I purchased my 2014 the guy in service said no problem most people wait takes 20 minutes or so to plug a lap in to reprogram power train system. WOW what a difference and I did not even buy my Escape from them. My appointment is this Tuesday at 9am at Marshall Ford. read more

Mike Sensmeyer took great care of my F-150. I brought it up to Sunset Ford after I had a check engine light pop up around 100,000 miles. Originally, I had another shop take a look and they said I needed both turbos replaced. I called Mike and he said he would rather take a look at it first because often times the turbos are fine and it's a minor issue that needs repair. Sure enough, he was 100% correct. Very much a bait and switch dealership. I talked with someone on the phone about A plan pricing and they told me one price. Then proceeded the next day to tell me a higher price because the truck came with leather seats. How is that on me? Then when I found a truck I wanted Toni was very unprofessional. He kept writing the wrong VIN on the paperwork and needed help with the simplest of tasks. Don't have him as your sales rep. Then they said they had to wait 2 weeks for the bank to process the loan. Then it became 2 days. Then the day of pickup they said anytime would work to pick it up. Then they changed to say 3 pm. Very unprofessional. read more

I thoroughly enjoyed working with Jim Wagstaff and Jason Schrijver during my car buying experience. Jim was incredibly helpful, friendly, and an excellent salesman. I did not feel the least bit pressured to buy and he would answer all of my questions honestly. The car buying process for me took a little bit longer than anticipated, because Jim and Jason's goal was to get me the vehicle I really wanted. When my wife and I first visited the dealership we test drove a few different models of Explorers and F-150s to get the feel of what we liked. Instead of pushing something we drove that was currently on their lot, Jim and Jason informed of a truck they just purchased at auction, but was not yet delivered. It seemed to have everything I wanted and then some. A week later, I returned and drove off the lot in a fantastic truck. Jim went above and beyond in the sales process as I requested to have my own mechanic inspect the truck before the deal closed. Jim personally took the truck to my mechanic on his day off. I dropped my 2010 Ford Fusion off at Sunset Ford for airbag recall repair on November 11, 2020. Of note, I started the car in the morning and drove to work, started the car and drove it to the dealer, parked and went inside, then started it and drove it in to the bay at their request. Each time the car started without issue. The technician mentioned that there was corrosion on the battery cable and they could clean it up for ~$30. I agreed to this repair. On November 12, the service department sent a text saying the air bag repair was completed and that they could not get the battery cable off the battery due to corrosion. The text also stated that the battery and all cables needed to be replaced at a cost of $660 dollars. There was no mention of any problems with the car starting. I declined the repair due to cost and a desire to get a second opinion. I received a text on November 13 saying the car was ready for pickup. There was no mention of the car not starting or any other issues. When I arrived to pick the car up, I was told that the car was outside and if there were any problems with it, they would jump the battery. It would not start. The technician said they didn't know why it wouldn't start. They jumped the car. I turned the car off and tried to start it and it would not start. There were no dash lights or interior lights. I spoke to the technician in the service department again and he denied repeatedly doing anything that would have made the car not start. He said they had tried to pull the cable off, but the negative cable was frozen and they could not disconnect the battery from the cable. They disconnected the positive cable in order to replace the air bag but claimed nothing was done to cause the car not to start. We were provided the Vehicle Report card, dated 11/13/20 which shows a green check under Battery Condition, however the comment section stated "Rec new battery, rec battery harness". It is remarkable that the vehicle operated impeccably until arriving for service, that the Service Department admitted they attempted to remove the cables from the battery but couldn't, and afterwards the vehicle would not start due to electrical failure. However the service desk representative was quick to point out he could "help with the bill" and "maybe take 10% off" and pressured me to leave the car so they could do the repair. All this AFTER the vehicle report card showed the battery condition green. I am a front line pharmacy worker and depend on my vehicle to get to work daily. I brought the car in to fix a recall issue, an admitted safety issue. The Service Department inspected the vehicle and determined the battery was in good condition. Sunset Ford acted in bad faith by not admitting responsibility for conceivably causing the problem with the car, not mentioning any issues with it starting and pressuring me to have over $600 in repair work done. There were absolutely no issues with the operation of the vehicle before taking it to Sunset Ford. We were told we had to take it there instead of our dealership Sinclair Ford. I have never been so disappointed in business dealings with a car dealership. I will be filing a BBB complaint and determining other options now that I have a car that will not start. read more

After buying a new car from Sunset I was really pleased with it...after I wanted a dealer installed remote start. .... after the process of buying the remote starter I wanted to have it installed on a weekend since the car I bought was for my girlfriend and I didn't want her to be inconvenienced by not having a car for work....... The salesman said there shouldn't be a problem and he would call my girlfriend with an appointment when he called he set the appointment for Tuesday which was quite inconvenient but it happened that I wasn't working that day and that I might be able to take it there when called for an emergency to work I had her call and cancel the appointment at that time she ask them about weekends they did not respond in any way then turned around and set an appointment for her birthday not only a day she would be working but a day on her birthday I tried to call and spoke with the head sales manager who was smug and arrogant over the phone towards me I told him I was going to take the car somewhere else where it was going to cost me half as much and less trouble his response was " okay well you're the customer you get to do you want" as I was on the phone with him then he recommended I call after the holidays that he was busy with two other things at the moment I immediately went to the dealership where I saw the sales manager and for other salesman sitting in their cubicle laughing and joking my biggest shock was when I heard the sales manager bad mouthing a customer that he had a conversation with over the phone to the other salesmen I told them I was unhappy but I was a customer and that's not the way you treat customers I immediately demanded my money and told them that I would never buy a car from them again they sold me a car they accomplished their goal they really don't want to do what's best for the customer If they really wanted to take care of their customers instead of telling me to call them after the holidays they would have resolved the issue right there and then instead of hanging around a cubicle waiting for the day to get over so they could go for their new years party it would have taken much for them to say will handle this sir will make sure we get her a loaner car for the day ahead of time because we don't want to see our customers inconvenienced in any way I remember when I was happy after I got the car and I was calling everybody I knew and telling them what a great experience I had I had planned on buying another car from sunset Ford but instead because of the way I was treated and away the sales people sit around acting smug and arrogant talking about customers behind their backs I would never purchase another car from this dealership again read more

We got my husband's car here from Jack, and couldn't be happier. Jack was so cool and honest, and basically held our hand through our first car purchase. We've always heard horror stories about unscrupulous car salesmen or 'dirty' car salesmen. This was not the case here. Everyone was polite and respectful. My son purchased a 2016 from Sunset Ford with the EXTENDED WARRANTY. He has had this vehicle back 6 times within the year to address issues with water and apparently wiring problems. They have offered to take it as a trade in but that leaves him losing over $10,000. Our family has been long time Ford owners as well as Ford employees. I feel Sunset Ford has slapped us in the face! I'm sure the Ford corporate office would not be happy with this situation nor the loss of generations of a Ford family. If Sunset Ford cannot right this wrong, then they have sealed the deal with total distrust. read more

We brought in the car for a check engine light and thinking we might need a new engine in our 2009 for escape. There were no engine problems that they could find (good news). Instead they tried to sell my father on 2 oil leaks he had. 1 was for a leak in the drive train cover gasket and the other at the oil pan gasket. Instead of just offering to replace the gaskets they said he needed new covers for both as well. After all this the total was going to be $3300... I spoke with many other mechanics of which 2 were other ford dealership. They said $300 for oil pan gasket and oil change, $1100 for the gasket in the drive train. These were the Ford prices. $1900 they tried to rip off my father who is a senior citizen and Vietnam vet. If I would have not called them out on it!!! This place is a joke! They also said the car would be done by 2:00 p.m because they started on it at 7:00a.m. when I called to tell them not to do the work and they said they had already started it so they couldnt stop. Now the work wont be done until tomorrow after 12:00. Service manager says its because they want to make sure and do the job right. Ask many questions and ask exactly what you are paying for. I went into the service department to pick up my car today and a service man was speaking to a customer about the COVID vaccine, and they were stating how it was "poison" and the employee stated that he was happy people were thinking for themselves. I spoke up because my family member just passed away from COVID and their out loud discussion was very upsetting to me. At this time, I then had to listen to the person helping me tell me about how the vaccine is produced by our government and that COVID is from our government. And that my family member may have still died even if she had the vaccine and that anyone can die at any time. He stated that I shouldn't be mad at him for what he was saying to me and then had the nerve to say sorry for your loss after making me listen to his anti-vaccine speech and COVID speech. I will never come here for business again. I don't care if I must travel to St. Charles for car service or to buy a new car. I will also let my entire family and friend base know about my experience at the service shop today. I don't think that politics should be discussed where customers can hear. I purchased a new Ford Escape last night from Sunset Ford. Steve Lower was our sales associate. Steve did an excellent job of not applying pressure to purchase nor did he apply pressure to purchase any specific model of Ford. Steve answered questions and let me know what was available. I selected the specific Escape online. This is an outstanding way of looking at the lot full of cars. Once I selected the Escape I wanted, Steve was able to coordinate the necessary paper work for the lease (this is the first time I have leased a car). Once all of that was completed, Steve has very helpful in instructing us in the options on this Escape. Since this Escape has most of the options, Steve was able to do this in a timely fashion. I have been working with Sunset Ford for several years. This was the third car we've purchased from them after going away from Ford for several makes and models. I have been returning to Sunset because of the friendliness of the staff, and the excellent work we have had done in the Service Department. I Bought my F150 from Sunset Ford in Dec 2013 and every time I need to use my warranty and (extended warranty) the wait time for service is over a month. When we bought the truck we were told that the service plan was quick and easy. However it has been a nightmare. I have had to take the truck to different dealers to get work done because sunset is unavailable. You would think they would make their customers a priority so they would return. Example, my air conditioning went out and the soonest I could get the truck in at the shop on Gravois (where I bought it) to get it fixed under the warranty was 5 weeks out. 5 weeks without air conditioning in the summer. I am sure there has to be some type of priority system for problems. Now every time I drive the truck without the air I despise sunset ford for not honoring their statement of fast and easy service. Their best option was for me to go to Waterloo Illinois, So I for me not to pay a $100 deductible on my warranty (again that was sold to me based on the fact that the service was quick and easy), I have to drive 45 minutes (without air conditioning) to and from Waterloo Illinois? That's just unacceptable and terrible business. I won't be buying from sunset ford anymore and I hope that they can fix their service department So nobody else has the same problems I have. read more

Took my brand new Explorer to check about a squeak coming from the engine. They said I had to leave it with them for 3 days before they could check it out. So I asked if I could make an appointment and they are backed up for a month. They finished the emissions which took 6 hours to complete and I went down to the other Ford dealer in south county and they fixed it in an hour. Which ended up being a bad pulley. read more

Tried to purchase a 2018 Ford Raptor the internet sales price was 64k I called and asked is this the true price was told it was except for some fees which were a few hundred at most. I said great I will be up to get it. Which St Louis is a 5 hr drive for me .Then oh magically the rebates advertised are not offered on that truck and the true price was 68 almost 69k. Mike Wilhite was my service writer, and he did a fine job. I have no complaints with any of the work that was done on my vehicle either...They have always done fine work. My issues come into play with some of the new and old procedures- 1. Paying our bill through our service writer - sounds good on paper, but Mike left early today and I had to wait around in the heat for them to find someone to take my payment. 2. I now get to walk to my vehicle instead of someone bringing it up to the door...not a huge issue I guess, but it wasn't raining or snowing today. 3. My vehicle was left unlocked on the lot....I realize Sunset takes responsibility for nothing left in the vehicle, but I don't want my vehicle left unlocked. 4. Sunset provides a car wash token, and a car wash that makes a terrible noise ever time I've ever used it. I've reported it twice, but nothing is ever done about it, so it's kind of a joke. It always sounds like metal on metal...no thanks...not on my vehicle. Other good dealerships ask if you want your car washed, and return it to you that way....washed! I suspect Sunset doesn't want to accept any liability if they wash the car...if you haven't installed a new system in the last couple of years, I don't blame you. 5. Drop box....I don't feel it is secure. A person can very easily reach in and remove one of the envelopes and the customers keys. If you haven't had any vehicles stolen, you will. In closing...do come here to get your vehicle serviced...they do a great job....If you need to be made "to feel special or pampered, or catered to, I'm not sure this is the dealership for you.... read more

A friend paid $23,000 cash recently for a used truck with supposedly a warranty there. Three days later the alternator went bad and he was told they could only fix it if it had been a Ford truck. I just now tried chatting with a salesperson online. Three different sales reps all clammed up when I mentioned the word "warranty." Something is definitely fish so far. I plan on exploring it further, and will expose what I find. read more

I purchased a 2013 ford f150 6 months ago this is my 5th ford truck have been pretty pleased with them till now about a week ago I tryed to us my ac and it just blew out hot air so I made a appointment and took it in to get serviced the repair center called me back and said they think a rock or something hit the condenser not positive butt that is what they think so thier for it is not a warranty item so it will be 850 dollars to fix I just purchased this truck for 35000 dollars with the 1000000 mile warranty and the 2600 extended warranty which are both apperntly useless I explains to them my family has done a ton of buisness with them my parents have bought 9 vehicles from them my sister 2 and me 3 and could they help me out a little I was given 50 dollars off of something I feel should be warrantyed and also when I got the vehicle back the engine compartment had ac dye all over the front and was missing 2 of the trim clips they remove to work on it I guess for 800 dollars they could not clean it up or putt the clips back in I guess that would have been another few hundred dollars me and my family have also always had all our vehicle service here butt never will agin horrible services And do not honner the ford warrantys they way they should unless they could prove to me a rock hit it then they should cover it and also every time I wanted to talk to the manager he was mystericly in a meeting sunset u have lost a large family of ford buyers and owners read more

We had an appointment to see a vehicle, checked the website for information and the vehicle was no longer listed. We called the salesperson who then told us the vehicle had been sold. I understand the dealership selling the vehicle before I could drive 2 hours to check it out - what I don't understand is why they didn't call to cancel the appointment.We had an appointment at a different dealer as well, they actually called when the vehicle was sold. I will start with a positive. Staff are very friendly and prompt. Now for my concern. I purchased my F150 Raptor from Sunset and they do all the maintenance. Had my scheduled oil change only to find over the next 30 days the truck was leaking oil. Took it back this morning to hear they had not tightened the drain plug. I would expect this type of service from a chain oil change franchise which is why I take my truck to the Ford dealer. I pass two quick oil change places on my way to Sunset Ford Service department. Disappointing that such a simple task cannot be completed correctly the first time. read more

I am very disappointed with your customer service. My family has purchased over 10 Ford vehicles and i was looking at getting a new F-150 soon, but after today that may not happen. I always use the same salesman and enjoyed my history with you until now. My father in-law had a fuel pump go out recently, its now 1 yr and 10 days old. Since its 10 days past your 1 yr warranty your customer service told him "Sorry"! That repair is over $1,000!!! And now he has to replace another one. Seriously Ford, two fuel pumps in just over 1 year? Is it really worth loosing a lifetime Ford buyer over 10 days?? It's just not right, very disappointed in how this has been handled. I purchased a 2012 Ford Escape Limited from Keith Boerding at Sunset Ford on December 21, 2012. I first arrived on the lot looking for a 2012 Ford Escape Limited that I saw posted on their website, when I walked in the used car sales floor I was greeted by Keith who explained to me that the vehicle had sold that afternoon. Keith took down my information and a list of what I wanted on my vehicle and explained that he would call me if anything arrived on their lot. Within a week, I received a call from Keith stating they had a certified used Escape arriving the next day. When I test drove the car Keith made sure to let me know that it had not been cleaned yet by their shop, however it already looked very clean and still had an authentic new car smell. We made a deal that evening, they gave me exactly what I wanted for my trade in which was a 2005 Mustang Convertible. I took delivery on the vehicle later that week once they had time to clean it. I have purchased three vehicles from other dealerships prior to this Escape and this by far was the easiest purchase/negotiation I have ever had. I felt the price was fair and Sunset Ford gave me exactly what I wanted on the Mustang without any haggling. Keith has consistently stayed in touch making sure I am satisfied with my purchase. I have since recommended Keith and Sunset Ford to all of my friends and family that are searching for a new or used car. read more
