Chatting with some other folks also waiting, found they have been here since their 6:15 reservation time, and they have not been seated yet. I get that it's a holiday, and that it's busy. However, a reservation as a reservation, and clearly they overbooked. The staff can't give us a time, just "when people leave." So unprofessional, and a disappointment on our holiday. I tried this place last year and they were so rude at the front desk my party ended up leaving and taking our business elsewhere. This year I decided to give it another try and made it to a table! However, although our waitress was kind, she was not very attentive and we were without water almost the entire time, and the proper amount of utensils without helping ourselves to the other tables stuff because we were tired of constantly asking and waiting for nothing. The food was also a let down. A friend ordered their seafood pasta and all you could taste was garlic. I got the glazed salmon and it wasn't much of a glaze as much of a brown sauce that was spicy. I was expecting more of a sweet Asian glaze - my daughter wouldn't eat it because she felt it was too spicy. I just felt it didn't taste good. We're a pretty easygoing group but this place is a disaster. We're falling in line with the tourist trap reviews. The views are stunning! End of the good news. Once we got seated, it was a good 10-15 minutes before we saw our waitress. We ordered drinks and another 10-15 went by before we got them. It was a full 30 minutes before we got to order food. Our appetizers came out in a timely way. Don't know how long before we got our salad, but we do know that it was right at 2 hours from the time we were seated until we got our entrees. The food was fairly pricey but very mediocre. The real kicker was the $15 split plate charge. Being senior citizens with smaller appetites, we split meals frequently. We fully expect to pay extra, but $15??? Probably not the waitress' fault for a lot of the issues, but she so should have mentioned this. There was a large group at the table next to us with several babies and toddlers (who were very well behaved). We ran into them at the grocery store afterwards and they asked if we were also planning to send a bad review. We totally understand that stuff happens and we've all worked in service industries, but typically when stuff happens you should try and make up for it. Offer a free round of drinks or a dessert on the house. The only thing that our waitress said was that our order went in right after a big table. I'm sure that like every other business, they are struggling to find and keep help, But their management needs to do a better job of training the staff. read more

Been to Moab several times, always saw this place high on a hill, always wondered about it, finally got to try it. Great story behind the building, belong ed to a broke prospector who struck it rich in uranium. Decent views, but facing the wrong way to see the sunset. Food is pedestrian and unimaginative. Instant white rice with no seasoning. Generous serving of duck, but well done with maybe raspberry jam on the top. Nice vegetable medley, but completely bland. Very disappointing. I had high expectations for a upscale, romantic dinner with my wife at the Sunset Grill in Moab based on a recommendation from my hotel's concierge. Although the view is phenomenal and the service is acceptable, the dress code is very casual and the food leaves much to be desired - particularly at the premium prices they charge. The only thing upscale about this restaurant is the prices. My prime rib was a very fatty cut of meat and the entire meal (meat, veggies, and baked potato) was served at room temperature. I left most of it on the plate. A nice place to get a drink at sunset, but eat elsewhere. One star for the view. read more

Our large group of 24 were able to be accommodated in a semi private section of the restaurant and were even able to be sat early since most of us were there before our 6pm reservation. They provided a shuttle to come get us at our nearby hotel since their parking lot is small and couldn't handle 6-8 extra vehicles just from our group. The restaurant is atop a steep hill with a beautiful view of the sunset and downtown Moab. They encourage you to walk around and see all the display cases full of Moab history and beautiful mineral and rock collections from the original owner of the house, now a restaurant. Our waiter, Wendell, was a rockstar and served our table pretty much by himself with some assistance from other food runners, but was our only waiter and was able to get everything out to us relatively quickly. The food and drinks were also pretty good with some seasonal and creative specials. We appreciated being able to sit altogether at one table, considering how large our party was! Not only was it a large group, but was also a partial anniversary celebrating my dad and stepmom's 12th wedding anniversary. It was a very special experience. You had 24 happy customers. Enjoyed a delicious meal just before sunset on the outdoor patio celebrating our wedding anniversary. The restaurant has beautiful views, nice background music while you relax between courses and friendly staff. My husband and I both enjoyed the filet mignon and our waitress surprised us with their made to order chocolate soufflé on the house in honor of our anniversary. I would absolutely return again and highly recommend for dinner just before sunset so you can enjoy all of the beautiful colors as the sun sets. read more

First, some tips: Reservations are for groups of 6 or more only. Even if you call ahead for 2, you will still have to wait on the list. And there is limited parking, so get here early or take the shuttle. The view is stunning, and the weather was nice enough for us to sit on the patio and catch the last light of the sunset. BF had a mule with High West whiskey instead of vodka (seriously, this needs to be a thing in Utah!), and I had an old-fashioned. Both great cocktails! The raspberry duck was phenomenal. The portion was rather large, duck was very tender and cooked perfectly, and the sauce was not too sweet. Our waiter, Chad, was very friendly as well. If you're only spending one night in Moab, this is the place to for dinner. The Atmosphere: The restaurant looks exactly like someone's home on the inside, a home that is perched on a cliff that is. If possible, ask for a table near a window and go close to sunset. Or if it's nice out, eat outside on the patio. The views are absolutely fantastic, you can see all of Moab and have 180 degree views of the canyon. This restaurant is definitely known for it's views. If you go just before sunset you'll get to see the sun dip below the red rock, which is a great sight to see. The Food & Service: My father and I both ordered the New York Strip and it was delicious. The food took some time to get out to us, but we didn't mind as we were watching the sun go down and constantly looking out at the 180 degree views of Moab. The server was very nice and polite, but also had a slower pace. But again, we didn't mind because we weren't in a hurry, the views were spectacular, and they were very busy. If you are in a hurry I do not recommend dining here. Summary: If you have one night in Moab and need a place to eat, Sunset Grill is your place. I'm not one to leave reviews but after eating at Sunset Grill I knew I had to! After reading some of them I could not believe the experiences other people have had. There was no wait and we were taken straight to our table. Our waitress Monika was an absolute gem. She took time to answer all of our questions, tell us the story of the house, and checked on us frequently. My sister and I could not stop talking about how wonderful she is at her job. We ordered the Linguini Olivia and the Honey Pecan Chicken and everything was perfect. Not to mention the views of Moab. The Sunset Grill is the former home of Charlie Steen, who put Moab, Utah on the map when he found uranium. The restaurant opened in 1993, serving casual fine dining to locals and tourists alike. To reach the restaurant itself, prepare yourself for a winding climb 250 feet up into the Red Rocks. From its location, one can see for miles the city of Moab and the stunning Red Rocks; at night, the stars shine brightly overhead. My husband and I found ourselves at The Sunset Grill for Valentine's Day; it was a wonderful choice. We were warmly greeted by the hostess and our waitress was a charming young lady. We were seated at the topmost dining area, so were able to see the city lights of Moab from our table. We began the evening with a popular appetizer, Artichoke Gratin Baguettes; diced artichoke in a rich cheesy mixture, topped with mozzarella cheese, spread onto French bread slices and grilled; they are served with a marinara sauce. I say popular as it seems that almost every couple ordered this appetizer and understandably; it was absolutely decadent and delicious. For a main course, I had the Prime Rib; a Texas style cut that was cooked medium-rare, tender, juicy and flavorful. The baked potato was fluffy and the steamed vegetables still had a crisp texture. Roy chose one of the Valentine's Day special; Bacon Wrapped Filet Mignon with a Balsamic Peppercorn Sauce; I had a taste and wished I had ordered it also. The beef was so tender and juicy; the sauce was sweet, tart and tangy with a hint of the peppercorns; just perfect. The main entrees were not small in portion, so we had to forego dessert...no regrets though. The Sunset Grill has a warm, welcoming atmosphere and the staff reflect this well; no pretentious attitudes here. Arrived in Moab early Friday evening after some hiking, but didn't get around to looking for a dinner place til 8 or close to 9pm. We called Sunset Grill to make sure they would still be open and they said to come on by! We arrived about 30 mins before closing and were seated in the upper level of the restaurant/house(?). There was a party of 4 there, drinking, and still enjoying their meal, but obviously the night was winding down. Our hostess was this sweet girl, very helpful with the menu, very polite and attentive. Seriously, such great customer service, and not shooting daggers at us for arriving so close to closing. I ordered a breaded chicken dish with rice and my companion ordered a steak dish. Both dishes were tasty and just the right serving to fill us without leaving us stuffed. Since the restaurant is on a hill, there is a nice view of the city. The only con about this place is getting there. There's a narrow roadway that takes you up to the restaurant, with space for 1 car, sometimes 2, to share the road. I imagine this could be incredibly annoying during peak times because you have to pull to the side to let a car pass or vice versa. I recommend for a nice dining experience: Alright food. Heading into Moab, we checked out Yelp & TripAdvisor for local eateries. Based on the # of stars, we made a choice, which we shared with Mitchell at the La Quinta. He very diplomatically told us it was a dump...lol and suggested the Sunset Grill. I called and was greeted by Jennifer who gave us a reservation on the deck and assured me that shorts were fine! As we walked in, Jennifer and her young assistant (who was incredibly professional and attentive despite her young age) greeted us warmly and showed us to the table. We enjoyed a glass of local Merlot from Castle Creek Wine (Moab, UT) and escargot served over puff pastry with a sauce of mushrooms, white wine, capers and sin (they were that rich and wonderful). Sidebar...I love escargot...love... and these were some of the most yummy and original I've seen! For our main, we had the Prime Rib (which they're famous for). It was cooked perfectly and served with baked potato and steamed vegetables. Dessert was homemade "razzleberry pie" and as you might expect by the point...yeah...it was delish!!! The whole time, we were well cared for by our server Lisa. Did I mention we were overlooking the city of Moab and had a stunning view of sunset? Prime rib for 6 and one steak knife. Other steak knives being washed. We struggled cutting prime rib with butter knife. Eventually, more steak knives. Smothered in grocery store bbq sauce." Protein entrees were served with plain white rice (literally tasteless) and vegetables that tasted steamed out of a microwaved bag. Salt in the wound is that the prices reflect fine dining - so we paid exorbitantly for food that was barely edible. Can't comment on dessert bc we bailed to eat elsewhere. Our sever was lovely. The atmosphere was nice. The owners/chefs, however, put in the absolute bare minimum effort and suck tourists into the trap of the location while completely swindling them in the process. Do NOT patronize this business. Hold yourself to higher standards. I would like to edit this review to invite a manager/owner to engage and provide a response, as I have noted that they do not regularly respond to criticism (which I should have taken into account). Someone needs to take accountability for the garbage served at this place. Update: I would like to refer all potential diners to the TripAdvisor page for this establishment. We went here because we are visiting from out of town & it was known for the view; which no argument is amazing. Our reservation was for 530 but we had to change it to 630 due to construction traffic leaving the park to the town. We were on time & waited approximately 15 minutes to be seated. We had a great view from downstairs. The waiter was attentive & took our drink order right away. Once that was delivered, we ordered food right away. We ordered the onion soup, bruschetta & escargot as appetizers and everyone ordered their dinner. ( party of 6) The appetizers were delivered in a timely manner; however the onion soup was warm but definitely not hot. The bruschetta was ok & the escargot was presented beautifully, but it was cold. We sent the escargot back & asked it be taken off the bill. Approximately 30 minutes later our salads were given. Ok n/p. Our dinner along with bread ( which was also cold with refrigerator cold butter) wasn't delivered until 7:50pm. We watched the waiter; he did not appear to be overwhelmed with too many tables; in fact there was only one other table he had in our room & we saw he had one outside. The restaurant was did not seem overly busy for a Friday night. In fact there were several empty tables in our room as well as other areas we could see & they were not noted as unseatable due to c19 rules. Anyway dinner finally arrived. I went through 5 steak knives trying to cut the fat off of my prime rib; which was cooked R-MR like I requested, but it was cold. My friends prime rib was overcooked. My husband's chicken wasn't hot either. We addressed our issues with the manager upon leaving & she advised he ( the waiter) had too many tables & that's why the food took so long & there were issues. I can only say two positive things about our experience at Sunset Grill....the view and they have a shuttle to pick you up from your hotel. The wait for a table was fine as it is a busy place that caters to tourists. Once seated we were asked for and received our drink order right away. Then we didn't see the waitress for 15 minutes! Using the term waitress is being generous as she was either having a bad day or is just a bad server. We finally ordered our meals and our salads came out right away. Then an hour later our meal finally arrived!! The place wasn't slammed and the waitress barely checked on us. The meal was on the level of cafeteria food. So ultimately a glass of wine and a beer and cafeteria food came to $141. I haven't tipped a waitress 15% in forever and that was just being generous. In a nutshell they capitalize on tourists as nobody will really be back so no need to be 5 stars apparently. So avoid it and just go to the Arches for your views. read more

If you look at my reviews you will see I rarely if ever give anything less than 4 stars, however we need to be real about Sunset Grill. The Sunset Grill is at best mediocre. Yes, it has a great view, but that is about all it has going for it from my experience. And of course experiences vary. My experience was the food was mediocre and the service was, well...bad, very bad. I was a server at one point so I am not going to rag on ours. Everyone has a bad night. However, the service is a part of the entire experience, and it was chaos. It seemed there were problems all throughout the service chain. For example, our 1 drink order was botched 4 times. The server ran all over the place frantically, yelling info to tables all over their area. It became obnoxious. The food, the food was mediocre as I said, but it is also boring. The one thing they had going for them was the fish and the steak were actually cooked well, but the rest was not what a restaurant at this price point should be serving. If I wanted a steak, frozen mixed veggies and a plain baked potato on a plate I would have gone to a poorly planned family bbq. Honestly, if the mixed veggies are not out of a frozen bag from Costco, I would be shocked. The mixed salad was fine, hard to mess that up. In the end, we could not leave faster. We left very dissapointed and unhappy with the entire experience. I will not be a returning customer. So in the end I would say buyer beware, the only good thing you may get out of your experience at Sunset Grill is a decent view. read more

Scenario: Roadtrip in June '05 moving from California to Kansas City. Product: I went here about 3 years ago and distinctly remember the scallops. Of all places to have the most delicious, tender scallops I never would have guessed it would be on a hill in Moab, UT. I don't exactly remember the prices but I'm thinking around mid-20s to low-30s per person. Service: I think the service was just normal. Nothing spectacular but not like they forget about you. It was a weeknight, so business was a little slow and they were able to get the food out in a timely fashion. Atmosphere: The view is AMAZING! At night, you can see the street lights and city down below with an expansive view off in the distance. If the weather is nice, then I mos def recommend the outdoor seating. Inside, lighting is low, comfortable and romantic. When you first drive up the hill to the gravel parking lot it seems a bit ghetto. But once you get inside you realize it's a comfortable, classy place without requiring you to dress to the nines. The food is pretty straight forward, solid, nothing particularly interesting. For a special occassion or if you want a romantic evening in Moab, Sunset is probably your only bet in town.
