The overall rating on YELP does not do this place justice nor accurately reflect the quality of food and service provided. Recently renovated and overlooking the Currituck sound, I really enjoy their seafood and service. The dishes are delicious and there's no pretentiousness involved with meals here, a characteristic that isn't often common for a lot of restaurants in the touristy parts of Duck. Even on a busy night the hostess will find a way to sneak you in. There are a few arcade games on the upper deck to allow for entertainment with kids. Local craft brew beers are available and the bar serves delicious. cocktails too. I ordered their mahi-mahi special with mango salsa, coupled with mashed potatoes, and broccoli rabe. The brussels sprouts as an appetizer were also delicious with lemon, sea salt, and olive oil. Overall one of my favorite restaurants on the Outer Banks and worth visiting, even if you just want a beer and view of the Currituck sound. read more

Awesome views good food. So my mom and group of our OBX vacation friends and family decided to come here for a light dinner. I previously had fond memories of this place with my parents years ago but the conch fritters I loved were no longer there. My drink of choice was the Caribbean Kool-aid I ordered a cup of New England clam chowder, a dozen oysters garlic Parmesan lobster fries. My mom ordered the fried oysters with fries and slaw. The chowder broth was super thick and the taste was bland the temperature was not hot enough so I sent it back for the she crab soup which was good. The fries were flavorful but Warm my mom said her fried oysters were good but the slaw was sour other then that the food that I was supposed to hot needed to be hot but the view is beautiful! read more

We took the whole family (12) for the last meal on our spring break vacation. The view of the sunset was amazing and worth the trip. The service both at the bar and our waiter were very attentive, friendly, and on point. Everyone enjoyed their meals - I had oysters on a half-shell with the Cajun Redfish for my entree, my wife had the oyster Rockefeller with the salmon for her entree. Our grandkids all had the barbecue ribs which were extraordinary for a seafood place. This was a great ending to a great trip! read more

Recently renovated and beautiful setting overlooking the Currituck Sound. There is a reason it is called the Subset Grille, because it has one of the most beautiful views of the sunset in Duck. The food was fresh and tasty, BUT the appetizers (cheese curds, buffalo chicken shrimp dip, calamari fries) and drinks are worth writing home about. Did I mention the drinks?!?! The menu declares "world famous cocktails" and we will not disagree. With a large group we partook in many of the offerings: Sunset's Famous Titanic, Tsunami, Painkiller and King King's Revenge. Yum! What a fun restaurant! The restaurant boasts seating both inside and out (with umbrellas and shade). In the evening there are fun patio lights! We went around lunch on Saturday (May 31st) and easily got a table. That may not be the case in late June/July/August. My husband and I ordered fun cocktails and we got to keep the souvenir cups. These aren't just plastic cups with their logo. They're cool ceramic glasses and my husband's was made out of a coconut! For our appetizer we ordered the crab dip which was pretty good. My husband ordered the blackened Mahi which he thought was good (his exact words). I ordered a bowl of sherry lobster soup which was divine. It came with a bunch of crackers. I couldn't finish the soup as everything was super filling. I would definitely go back to this restaurant for lunch! read more

Amazing transformation. We have been here numerous times over the last 10 years and have been underwhelmed and dissatisfied in the food and service. However, we just went and the management has changed. The food was delicious, the best we've had in the OBX and that's saying something. We reluctantly went with our large group even warning them about our mediocre past experiences and we were pleasantly proved wrong. They still have the drink menu with fun souvenir cups but the menu has changed and the service has improved! I would definitely recommend giving them another chance and I'm glad we did. read more

This is a review of the outdoor area only. We had a great time, a large group of 12. It's always nice to sit outside, by the water with friends, and have some food/drink. The service we had was outstanding. Our waitress was fantastic, very attentive. Couldn't ask for better service. The lobster fries were fantastic and the rest of the food was good too. Not great, but good. SO... if you want to sit outside, enjoy the nice weather, sit by the water, just relax and have a nice time with family and/or friends, and have excellent service, I would say this is a great place to go. If you're looking for 5 star dining, perhaps this isn't the place for you. But our group had a great time, they were very accommodating, and we would go back next time we are there. read more

Stopped here for dinner with good friends and were immediately greeted by very friendly staff and the Manager, Rohan. Being a Sunday in off season, it wasn't crowded but we had great service, and delicious food. I had the Mediterranean Salmon which was delicious and diet friendly, a friend had the tuna poke bowl which she raved about and ended up sharing some key lime pie. Stopped in for lunch and drinks while exploring Duck. This restaurant is so cute and right on the water. We opted to dine indoors because of the strong winds, but you are still able to enjoy the ocean views from the large windows. We ordered multiple appetizers and the best were the coconut shrimp and firecracker shrimp. The best surprise was for the drinks, is that they come in fun cups which you get to keep! Service was pleasant and fairly prompt. Drinks were pretty good. The sunset was great and I think that's what you are paying for. The food overall was nothing extraordinary. One diner devoured the crab legs however. The clam chowder was also good. My tuna poke was average, my wife was unimpressed by the lobster and shrimp agnoletti. Calamari sticks were weird since it's a stick and not curled since when you dip, you don't get enough. It felt like a chicken tender. The Buffalo dip was good. And the scallops were cooked right. The hawaiian tuna was gross. The rice was tacky & overcooked. Drinks (5/5): The titanic was great ($29). It tasted like pineapple and came in a fishbowl that you can keep. They had lots of souvenir drinks. Ambiance (3/5): We asked for an umbrella and were told that the manager wasn't allowing them due to wind... there was a small breeze. We ended up asking to go inside once the drinks came out because we were burning up. It was quiet outside. Inside, it was a normal crowd. Service (5/5): Our server, Stewart, was amazing. The hostess' were not people friendly... That shouldve been our warning. But nooooo we waited 30 min for a table which was expected. I had the crab bisque. It was not good and the cheap crackers that come with it is just disrespectful. I should've just went to Wendys. The hostess sat me in a puddle of water that was on the plastic chairs. Was concerned about some of the reviews and bringing such a large group here (13 people) but we had a great experience. Our server was a bit sassy asking us if we were gonna "surprise" him at the end and split checks we assured him we only planned to have 1 check! I ordered the Wisconsin cheese curds and my partner ordered the crabby fries - would definitely pick the crabby fries over the curds as the curds were over fried imo results in no cheese. For my main course, like the grown adult I am I had chicken tenders and fries, can't really mess these up. They came out hot and fresh. My partner had the red fish which he thoughrouhly enjoyed. I ordered a jaws attack and it came with a free ceramic cup! Overall, not a bad experience at sunset and would recommend as they have a nice patio! read more

This is a great place for good seafood. Casual and nice views of the water. We ate indoors since the wind was very brisk - service was great and efficient. Orders came quickly and everyone enjoyed their food. Three of us ordered the scallops special and we got an amazing amount of them- at least 8! Services was good. No music outside when we were there and we didnt drink one of their super overpriced custom drinks. I think our beers were $8 a piece. The butter there is absolutely horrible. Stopped by in the afternoon and we assured the would be no issues getting a table around 6 ("no reservations, we aren't that hoity-toity") we arrived at 6:15 and were told 90 min wait outside...went inside and same thing. We put our name in. We were able to secure 6 seats at the bar.....took forever to be acknowledged....one girl working the bar. Finally got drinks but one of the group never got hers. Money wasn't collected. Never offered to put it food order. Our table became ready a little earlier than expected. We told our server we need to pay for drinks- he said we have to square up with bartender... back to the bar I go. Finally got the bartenders attention and she said no don't worry about it, drinks on her! Left her a healthy tip! The fish and chips were ok... it was rockfish. We were a little unprepared when we headed out. It was a holiday weekend and a lot of spots were closed. I just pulled into the parking lot of this place because it was packed and open. Service was stretched. The food was just okay. I had the crab cakes with mashed and broccoli. I seem to the the only one that didn't mind their selection. My son ordered the snow crab legs at market price ($25) for a half cluster. The she crab soup was decent. That about sums up dinner. The view was the highlight. My visit here was memorable for all the wrong reasons. Early in the meal, our waitress accidentally spilled mustard on me. While I understand accidents happen, there was no apology, no attempt to help clean it up, and no follow-up throughout the meal. She never checked on our food, never asked if we wanted more drinks, and seemed completely disengaged. I was at least expecting for some of my meal to be comped, but nope full price for a horrible meal and service. When my salad arrived, I found a piece of plastic mixed in with the greens. That's not just unappetizing but a food safety issue. The staff's response was minimal: no manager came by, no offer to replace the meal promptly, and no effort to make it right. I try to be understanding in restaurants, but this combination of poor service, lack of basic hospitality, and a serious lapse in food safety left me both disappointed and, frankly, questioning if I should carry mustard-proof clothing to my next meal because my new white shirt now has to go in the garbage. A little humor aside, this is a place that needs to seriously review its training and quality control. read more

Well, lesson learned here. Not all restaurants with a great view have good food. It's a good lesson to learn. We went up to the Corolla area today and saw this place. It ticked the boxes of my Mom so we decided to give it a try. First hint: when we got there, there were people waiting but they sat us right away. Apparently there is a second floor that is very popular for dining and watching the setting sun. They didn't even ask if we wanted to wait, just sat us. It was a seat with a view so we didn't feel like we missed out. It WAS freezing though as the air/con was on and our table was directly under a paddle fan. Second hint: we decided on our drinks selection. I wanted to try an OBX crush and Mom stuck to her wine. Now, I opted for.the blackberry crush; bourbon, blackberry brandy with ginger ale and sprite. I didn't taste the blackberry or the ginger ale, just weak bourbon and sprite. It came in a fun plastic cup that you can keep. Mum got a glass of white wine that was barely quaffable. It tasted off to be honest. She asked for an iced tea but the server took too long to bring her some sweetener. We ordered our apps then I opted for a crushed salad that seemed to have everything in it including a whole avocado. Mum ordered their supposed award winning clam chowder ...and questioned if they knew what clam chowder was. Also...who serves clam chowder with saltines?? For our main dishes, mom got the crab cakes and I got the braised short rib ravioli. I had wanted fish again but they only had crab, shrimp and lobster....no fish. The crab cakes were weird tasting according to mum and this is a woman who will eat crab cakes anywhere. The ravioli was obviously frozen and covered in this thick tasteless sauce (salt & pepper helped). The waitress was very sweet but kind of flighty. She kept forgetting things that we ordered. One final straw was no sooner did we get our appetizers then our dinner came out. This above all else truly annoys me. Let me finish my salad before bringing my dinner! Considering the quality of the food, this was a rather pricey bill. It was more than the first place we ate which was more upscale and fresher food. Oh well, even touristy places have their places. I have been here. I don't think I would come back but if you have a hankering and like the view, at your own discretion. read more
