Off season in HHI allowed us to find this gem of a restaurant off the beaten path with limited hours. Sunset Grille is truly a second story restaurant located on the water and off the beaten path( located in an RV park ) Our table was next to the windows where we could appreciate the fantastic view of the wildlife and also some amazing boats. The crowd in the room was mature , no children, and at best was 24 people - Sunset Grille is truly and intimate place For appetizers we shared the baked feta Hot baked feta w/herbs, grape tomatoes & olive oil. Served with toast points and water crackers this was a tasty bite. The second appetizer was a cup of mussel bisque! I've had plenty of bisque thru the years but never mussels.. DELICIOUS! Creamy, salty, potatoes, plenty of mussels and a nice hit of sherry the bisque was so good my wife stated if we lived close i"d take a bucket of this home! Entrees, my wife has the Seafood Cakes - Two delicious cakes filled w/ shrimp, crab & today's fresh catch w/ Lemon caper cream sauce, rice & vegetables. The cakes were a huge portion with quality ingredients. I had the Crispy Pork Belly, FANTASTIC! Crispy pork belly sweet potato hash w/ house made sausage, poblanos, onions & Sirache honey. I've had pork belly but never a portion as large as this - Two pieces , excellent quality, taste and Accoutrements . The pork belly won't leave you hungry and yes I ate the FULL PORTION. Our final, one delicious slice of carrot cake ! Everything was going great, good food, excellent service then just before we going to order dessert the Hostess came over and said she needed our table. We had been there just over one hour. I asked if she was kidding to which she replied this is a restaurant not a park! We asked for the check ,the waitress offered us free dessert as she was embarrassed ,and said we could stay as long as we wanted. We declined the dessert.The hostess came back to apologize but we decided to leave. A shame how one employee can ruin an otherwise wonderful meal. read more

The food at this restaurant is absolutely delicious and service was extremely attentive... So why only three stars? Two major reasons! 1-There is no restroom in the restaurant, Patrons have to go outside, and down the stairs to use the marina bathroom. Lots of very large bugs. Yuck! 2- parking is atrocious. We rode around for 10 minutes looking for a spot.The marina parking guy is nasty. Doubtful we will return! read more

The food, beverages and service were all top-notch, as usual. And here's the minus-two stars. I was dismayed that management is OK with a wait staff person wearing a Donald Trump apron. This is a time in our country when political issues have divided the population. Our visit was during election week, after the results were announced, when I'm guessing more than one non-Trump voter was unhappy. I felt it was an in-your-face slap at some guests. This place is so cute, my friends and I loved it! We had a reservation around sunset time--it is called Sunset Grille after all. The restaurant is kind of secluded and hard to find, even if you're looking for it. You have to go up a flight of steps and the door is hard to open, and opens into one of the tables (as opposed to a hostess stand). Once we were seated we took in the view and got ready to order. The menu that day was slightly different than the one online; not sure if this is because it changes frequently or the online one is a little out of date. We began with the Cajun Fried Oysters. We really liked these, the Gorgonzola and balsamic paired great together. For entrees we got the Chipotle Braised Short Ribs, the Glazed Pork Belly, and the Scallop and Crab Risotto. The risotto was excellent, really the star of the three entrees we got. The short ribs and the pork belly were also really good. Our waitress was able to tempt us with dessert. We ordered the chocolate bread pudding with bourbon glaze, the cheesecake, and the carrot cake. The bread pudding was the best one here, the bourbon glaze was amazing. The waitress really talked up the carrot cake, and it was good but I'd stick with the bread pudding. Really nice and unique place, with beautiful views. A real hidden gem. We have stayed at the RV resort and assumed that the restaurant was good but not great. We were surprised to find locals recommending the Grille. Tonight we tried it and we're quite pleased. It's a small place. Make your reservations accordingly. Definitely shoot for sunset, the place does have a great view over the water and facing West. The food was as good as it gets. I had a salmon dish, smoked perfectly over grits while my wife had scallops over couscous. Both were excellent. We had a good bottle of wine and a great bread pudding for desert. The whole experience came at a modest price. Definitely worth it. We will be back next time we are on Hilton Head! read more

We all had dessert and it was also great. We made reservations for 16 two months in advance so make sure you make reservations. they split us up eight to a table. The Sunset Grille is my grandmother's favorite restaurant on the island. I came back all the way in 2014 and remember really wanting to taste the duck, but just didn't get around to it. 8 years later, I still hadn't eaten duck... until tonight. The duck here was fantastic. Perfectly cooked and the glaze was decadent. I wasn't a fan of the rice - it tasted like it came from a box, but the green beans were fantastic. For an appetizer I ordered the bruschetta, a personal fav of mine these days. The menu had a few intriguing bisques as well, but the bruschetta took the cake. While the food is well prepared, where I felt the Sunset Grille to be a bit awkward is its dining setting. Nestled in the middle of an RV park, its elegance is forced and contrived. I feel the restaurant would work best if it were an outdoor venue looking over the bay, rather than be raised on a second story. Still, this is a minor gripe, and shouldn't take away from the stellar food. The Sunset is a go-to for me and the family when we come to HHI. It's the closest you'll get to fine dining, and for the Island's standards, it's not half bad. read more

This place was fabulous. I understand they do little or no advertising yet their dining room is booked with reservations, indicating a worthy reputation. A combination of a beautiful setting by the water, attentive and personable wait staff and magnificently prepared dinner fare made this Yelper provide a five-star rating. No one in our party of four was disappointed. Two had a nightly special filet of beef. My wife had risotto scallops and I ordered seafood cakes. We all shared comments affirming this chef's pleasing seasoning and sauces and the excellent temperature and quality of the beef and seafood. By noon the place is mobbed and popular food options run low. The menu is small with something to please everyone You can order egg dishes, quiche, waffles/pancakes, seafood dishes, potatoes, breakfast meats, etc. I believe the meu changes often. There is a full bar, but Mimosas and Bloody Marys are the crowd favorite. Can't give it 5 stars, sadly. Not everyone's meal arrived warm. Ham was cooked to inedible. What was prepared correctly was very good. Also, we were a family with seniors. Some obviously don't operate quickly. The server was curt and impatient. When we finished eating, but still drinking our cocktails, we were abruptly handed our check. The server hovered over the table trying to get us to leave. This is not a budget restaurant. We went to Sunset Grill after reading the amazing reviews, however it fell a little short for me. It is a tiny restaurant on the second floor but the pool of an RV resort. Due to mobility issues, stairs ate a bit of a struggle for me but there was not an elevator option that I saw. The bathroom is also downstairs- you have to use the pool bathroom which was inconvenient and kind of gross. With the price of the meals here, I expected it to be a little nicer. There is a pretty view though. The food was a bit overpriced. It was good, but not amazing. The restaurant was very small and tables were crowded together. Our waitress was not very attentive. Not somewhere I would return to or recommend to others. read more

We've been visiting the area all week and this place wasn't on our radar until we were faced with one hour waits on a Friday night. With two hungry kids, we did a search and called this place. Confident.in my ability to get there in 10 minutes, we dashed over. Drove past an RV park and walked up a flight of stairs from the laundry room and pool for the RV park, we were nervous. Fools. We are now sorry that we didn't meet sooner. The food is excellent. Simple and delicious. My son is a picky eater but loved his oysters and lamb. I had caprese and it was perfectly seasoned. I tried the shrimp and grits and regret waiting this long to have the local specialty. We also had the mushroom app and duck. What can I say besides it was all perfect. Have been to this restaurant many times. This time was not great. Although the service was great, my meal was not. The strip steak was so tough that it was tiring to cut. The mashed potatoes served with the steak were so full of green peppercorns that it was noticeably hot . In all, the menu could use an update as to main courses. PLEASE bring back the beef fillet.
