The first time, I came for the Monday night burger and beer special for $10.95 after 4pm. The burger was very good with a nice sized patty, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and pickles on a wheat bun. The beer pour isn't just a glass, it's larger-sized schooner. Specialty beers on tap are an extra $2. The burger doesn't come with a side, but a tasty burger and a large beer for under $11 is a great deal. The following week, I came back for the Tuesday night BBQ special. Their BBQ chicken and ribs dinners are 30% off, and come with two sides and a fresh dinner roll. I got the full slab of ribs which was only $21 after discount. They definitely do not skimp on the ribs, as the plate came with two large half slabs stacked on top of each other. The ribs were cooked well, and the BBQ sauce had a good mix of tang and sweetness. I had coleslaw and fries for my sides. The other options for sides are Beckett's beans, potato salad, macaroni salad, and pasta salad. A half slab and the fries filled me up, and I took the other half and the coleslaw home. This is also a great deal for only $21. Other special days include Wednesday $3.50 schooner night from 5pm to 7pm, Friday night $10.95 fish taco plate, and Saturday and Sunday breakfast specials from 10am to noon. They have a pool table, darts, and many TVs with various sports playing. Service was timely and friendly.

My smash burger came out juicy and flavorful and my curly fries were hot. The Reuben came out stuff with corned beef and was also very flavorful. The atmosphere here is fun. There are tvs everywhere and had the World Cup games on. There was music playing and the employees we interacted with were all very nice. We will go here again if we are in town. The High Horse Saloon is a western themed restaurant and bar in downtown Fullerton…read more Parking in downtown Fullerton can often be a challenge. There is a small parking lot behind the restaurant which is often full. We usually park in the free multi-story parking garage just east of Harbor and Wilshire. It is a short one block walk to High Horse from there. As the name suggests, the décor is very western themed with lots of wood, cowboy hats and boots, wagon wheels, lassos, saddles, taxidermy, etc. Seating options include booths, high top tables, and at the bar. They have happy hour Monday through Friday from 3pm to 6pm with food and drink specials. We started out with the pickle fries ($12) which were excellent. The pickle slice thickness to batter ratio was perfect, and they were served with a side of ranch. My first cocktail was The Smoking Gun (bacon washed Elijah Craig bourbon, maple syrup, angostura bitters, orange bitters, $18). It is smoked tableside and was a healthy pour. The bacon and maple flavor was very light, but it was very smooth. Her first cocktail was What Would Dolly Do? (Hornitos plata tequila, Los Sundays jalapeno tequila, Del Maguey peubla mezcal, simple syrup, lime, pineapple, grapefruit, $16). It was balanced with good jalapeno flavor and pineapple below with a light smokiness. For my entrée, I had the half slab of baby back rips ribs ($28) with coleslaw and fries. The plate arrived steaming hot and I was impressed with the portion of ribs. There were seven meaty ribs that were very flavorful and the BBQ sauce was good. The fries were crisp and seasoned, and the coleslaw was good too. She had the Up The Creek spice rubbed cedar-plank salmon ($26) with asparagus and mashed potatoes. The portion of salmon was good and it was flavorful. The asparagus was cooked well, but they were over salted. She also enjoyed the potatoes. My second cocktail was the Skinny Dipper (Tito's vodka, St. Germain, aloe vera water, watermelon, lime, $15). This drink was light and refreshing, with floral notes, and watermelon and lime standing out. It also had a great looking color. Her second cocktail was Ladies Love Outlaws (rose petal infused Ketel One vodka, St. Germain, simple syrup, grapefruit, lemon, rose wine, $16). This was also light with floral notes, and had good grapefruit flavor. It was very lively at 6:30pm on a Thursday evening. We left a little after 8pm, and the place was packed as they have line dancing. There was a big crowd of at least twenty people dancing in front of the restaurant and having a great time. The service was good, and our server was very friendly. The food and drinks were great, and I think they were a pretty good value for the price.

I had tried taking a photo booth picture with my friend and on our last photo a drunk man had fallen onto us ruining the photo completely by it picturing only a black curtain. I appreciated a security guard calling a manager over immediately, but we were not assisted properly. The manager had came over to us in a defensive manner. He approached us by asking what's going on. We explained the situation and were told he cannot do anything for us. I was wanting any form of compensation for wasting my money on a photo booth in their bar. He continued to tell us that he doesn't own this photo booth machine, so he can't do anything for us. Yet, he can have his bouncers allow a man, who is clearly blacked out, into their bar. Then proceed to let that man roam around the bar as if he didn't just fall onto us. I brought up this point to the manger and he told me I was disrespecting him. We did not receive any form compensation nor an apology. I don't care what type of setting we were in, a manager needs to have some sort of customer service skills. Very clear management did not care about our safety.

I attended Chako's Social for the Mexico vs. England World Cup match and, unfortunately, it was the…read moreworst World Cup viewing experience I've had in nearly 30 years of attending matches at venues across Southern California. The venue appeared to be focused on creating a nightclub atmosphere rather than providing a proper football watch party. There was a DJ, extremely loud music, and a host who continuously provided her own commentary throughout the match. Instead of allowing fans to enjoy the game, she repeatedly interrupted play with jokes, personal observations, and constant microphone chatter that distracted from the match. Halftime was especially frustrating. Rather than preparing for the second half, the host performed multiple songs while fans on the patio were asking for the match audio to be turned on. Even after the game resumed, the unnecessary commentary continued for the remainder of the match. To make matters worse, there was a $30 cover charge. I purchased tickets for my entire group in advance, spending well over $200 before food and drinks. For that price, I expected a venue that understood people were there to watch one of the biggest sporting events in the world--not to watch the host become the center of attention. A great World Cup watch party lets the match create the atmosphere. The crowd, the chants, the tension, and the emotion are what make these events memorable. Unfortunately, those moments were constantly interrupted. I genuinely wanted to like Chako's Social, but this experience was incredibly disappointing. If you're looking for a true football viewing experience where the game comes first, I cannot recommend it based on my visit.

Let me tell you why I keep coming back here…read more It's not just the beer, although Bootleggers has plenty of that. It's the patio. There's something about the outdoor space here that makes Bootleggers feel like a little beer oasis tucked just far enough away from the hustle of downtown Fullerton. There are plenty of covered tables, lots of shade, and a large, permanently covered section with a giant TV showing sports and other important television events. When they have live music, it's usually the kind that actually improves the atmosphere rather than taking it over, you know, good musicians, good music, but still chill enough that you can have a conversation. And, of course, there's the beer. They have a really solid and diverse selection, with several IPAs, stouts, seltzers, and other options usually available, plus a selection of beers from other local breweries. It's hard to imagine coming here and not finding something you like. If you can't you're just an openly hostile person. Consider meditation. There's a food truck parked along the side that has basically become part of the Bootleggers landscape. And while outside food is no longer allowed, that's not really a hardship because the food is actually pretty damn good. The sandwiches, salads, and other offerings are all solid, but the fried pickles are the real reason I keep coming back. They're cut lengthwise, breaded just right, and fried until they're perfectly crunchy. Basically big, tart, crunchy submarines of fair food fun. I have a difficult time going to Bootleggers without ordering them. Every. Single. It's close enough to downtown Fullerton to walk to, but just far enough off the beaten path that the patio feels removed from the usual bar scene chaos. The street is nearby, but you barely notice it. It's just a nice place to sit outside, drink a good beer, listen to some music, watch a game, and hang out for a while. Sometimes you don't need another crowded bar with loud music and a $16 cocktail. Sometimes you just want a good beer, some shade, and a plate of ridiculously good fried pickles. Bootleggers does that really well.

Some pieces were soggy, as if they hadn't been cooked long enough, while others were a bit chewy. The pasta also didn't seem to be made in-house. At nearly $40 for an entrée, it felt overpriced, especially when there are several nearby restaurants that make their pasta from scratch for a similar or lower price. Our waitress did her best despite seeming overwhelmed and having some difficulty with the portable POS system. She remained polite and attentive, so I don't fault her for the experience. Overall, this wasn't the quality we remembered, and unfortunately, we won't be returning.

Sunset is a comfortable neighborhood bar. Cheap drinks, pub-type atmosphere, a couple of great bartenders, basically, it's everything you could ask for in a local hangout spot. I've started coming by more and more regularly, so I'm updating my years-old review as I'm getting to know more of the current employees. Laura is easily the best bartender I have ever seen, it's no wonder she's the most popular there and always seems to be up for everyone's 'best in OC' every year. You want something creative? She's got it. You want something perfect just made for you? She can do it. You have something very specific already in mind? She's the one who can make it exactly how you want it. She's the reason the place has developed such a good reputation as a cocktail bar in recent years. She's fast and efficient while being super-nice and funny. Come in sometime when it's slow and ask her to tell you a story or craft you something special. Dayle is also really nice and knows her stuff, but I gather she's retiring? I'm going to hope that's not true. I was so happy when she came back last year. Mary is very nice and all the regulars like her, although she is new. However, I've seen a couple of bad reviews for her, like Sarah D and James H left. Keep in mind (if you guys see this), she's really new and she's been getting flustered when she's slammed, just be patient with her and maybe try her out again when she's gotten fully trained, she's not actually rude. Anthony was really nice, but he doesn't seem to be there anymore. It's too bad, he seemed to enjoy working there, I thought. Julie (Julia?) I've only seen a couple of times, but she's the only bad one who still works there. She doesn't seem to have any clue what's she's doing, and just so rude. She doesn't know how to make very many drinks, and I can do without overhearing all the snide comments about other customers and especially all the ones about people with darker skin hues than hers. I'm thinking about knocking off a star because of her, but I'm hoping she's just a fill in or something, that's what it sounded like last night. I feel I can appreciate life more after a night at Sunset Lounge turned into a Fight Club scene one Weds. night. The crowd was a mix of clamorous students and long faced regulars, drinks were cheap, the karaoke selection impressive. My BF has just finished singing, I was working on my first brown ale when this scrawny dog in a plain white t-shirt, comes out from the back, walks straight to us, no introduction, and tries to head butt my BF. He jumped off his seat and pushed the bro back while I was looking for my phone to call the police. People, this is a complete stranger in a place we decided to check out based on good reviews. The bar had no security, a girl who was bartending jumped in and tried to hold the drug crazed maniac back while saying "C'mon...you can't do this to me again!" The brawl moved outside, two guys got close and I heard them say that he was probably confusing my BF with someone else. We did the smart thing and left asap. Finally an honest assessment: Came Weds night: Looks like an exotic mix of a homeless shelter, Jenny Craig, and a mental hospital -based on the crowd. The only lady in charge of the asylum is believed to be a Darwinian eugenicist, and was charging loco prices for drinks. Survival of the fittest? No menu - they charge you how they feel at the moment without warning... and please don't make it more complicated then a Jack and Coke or the lady will have a fit and cry because she doesn't know it. She willl charge you a premium if you embarrass her. This is a plus size venue, and if you are fit - just FYI, you don't fit in. On the plus side it has pool tables and the karaoke hosts are nice guys. Pre drink at your shelter or momo down the street and if you feel lucky you may get to sing 2 songs the whole night because everybody and their mother sings here. ;) read more

Huge mistake firing Lori (after almost 20 years) who is the most conscientious, competent and loyal bartender in Orange County because her "numbers" were not what was expected by bar ma Her "numbers" were a direct result of changing her daily shifts to meager customer days (ie: Sunday's/Monday's) from relatively very productive days (Wednesday/Thursday). The bar revenue will be significantly impacted by the consequences of this bar's misguided management decision. Many previous Sunset customers have decided to migrate to the Bird Bar for the above rationale. The bartenders at the Bird are wonderful and "Happy Hour" at 3:00 each day is 50 percent off all drinks. Come join us and see your old fellow bar goers and friends. Atmosphere is chill. Couple annoying drunks (where don't you find them?), drunks got calmed down quick. Then the blissful drink hits your tongue and you start dancing and grooving to the music, Nikki rocks your world looking amazing and serving the best drinks i have had in a while (hint: talk a little shit she'll make them stronger even though she already makes them pretty good, but do not forget to tip her. She worth it). I didn't sing (you're welcome people) but I know they have tons of music, the KJ was awesome kept the party going. The barback guy even went up there and sang a couple songs. Overall the experience was awesome, it was my second time there, first time sucked since I was the DD lol so nothing on the establishment. I love the Sunset Lounge. Went there as my favorite neighborhood bar for almost seven years, until I moved to PA in 2009. Affordable drinks, great staff, and always a familiar face or two around. Karaoke is great fun (one of the best selections I've ever seen). The rotation can get long; but that's just an indication of how many people show up and want to participate in the fun. NOT WHAT IT USE TO BE - You should really enforce a "no colors" policy, to reduce possible conflict as I was there saturday night and left because these Mongols Bikers with the ratchet girls were a buzz kill. I went here this past weekend to celebrate a friend's birthday. The atmosphere is nice. The service was friendly and we didn't have to wait long for our drinks. The drinks were cheap and well poured. The Karaoke was a lot of fun. The KJ was great and kept everybody in the rotation. Great selection of songs! If you are in So Cal and want to Karaoke, give this place a try! read more

I like this bar and I completely understand it's a karaoke bar but dang the music was so extremely loud I had to go outside just to hear my friends talk. I couldn't even hear my own voice it was THAT LOUD. The bar back was extremely rude too. He literally told me "just order your fuckin food" when I asked for a menu. Terrible service. Bartender Vee has a jealous boyfriend who just hangs around the bar all day and night acting like security. Amanda is the only nice one here. Avoid this dump. So many better options for bars in Downtown Fullerton. The owner should re-evaluate who he is hiring to run the bar. Also the karaoke dude only lets regulars get up and sing. read more

The bar tender was good. If you want to be left alone; she'll leave you alone. If you want someone to chat with, she's capable of good conversation. This is a classic neighborhood bar. Some might call it a dive bar--but it's too neat and clean to qualify as a true dive bar. The regulars seem to keep to themselves; but they do not come across as unfriendly nor territorial. It's a good safe place to get a drink.
