I am a BIG fan of SMV after my visit on Saturday, 9/19/15. A friend and I stopped by after the Harvest Fest at Haight-Brown, which is only a few miles away. Tastings here are only $6 ($7.50 if you want to bring a glass home) and you pick your own custom tasting. I tried the following: - Cayuga White (a requirement of any CT vineyard - this one is done very well) - Blustery Blend (could definitely taste the kiwi/star fruit) - Enchanted Apple - New Dawn (packs a punch!) - Root 63 (the red you should get for someone who drinks white) Our pourers were cracking jokes with us and recommending the wines, which is helpful when you're unfamiliar with the lineup. After our tasting and bottle purchase (we each went home with a Root 63), we debated getting a glass of one of the wines and enjoying the patio for a while. One of the pourers mentioned the wine smoothies they make on site and we were sold. They were $5 each (we had the pomegranate blueberry with the blush wine) and worth every penny. Ok, we like this place for the view, the trip to the Litchfield Hills area region and the fact that they are dog friendly. The wines are good too! For the most part the staff at the wine bar are very friendly, but sometimes you have to wait to buy a glass of wine if the tastings are crowded. the folks who help with parking and walk the grounds a re very very pleasant and friendly. Pack a picnic and snacks. bring your own glasses and enjoy a full bottle - when they have entertainment, it is a very nice way to spend a sunny afternoon. read more

What a fantastic winery! Awesome staff, great gift shop and FABULOUS wine!! This was actually our first stop after driving several hours from RI to continue our adventures on the CT wine trail in this area and it ended up being the BEST in that area!!! We actually ventured back a couple hours later because we were disappointed in many of the other wineries and we were able to sit outside and drink some wine with a delicious charcuterie. Had a wonderful experience with their wine tasting on a rather dreary day. The staff was so friendly and helpful with how it all worked and our flights were ready so fast. You also get to keep the wine glass that comes with your flight which is a nice souvenir to add to a home bar. The gift shop is also so cute and has lots of fun things for wine lovers. I think this might be my favorite winery in Connecticut. Even though it's a little far from where I live, it's 100% worth the drive. Not only are the grounds beautiful, but their wine is delicious. I can't seem to leave without buying multiple bottles. Their tasting is a great deal - $12 for 5 wines and a souvenir glass, and they're generous pours. My favorites include their Riesling, Blustery Blend and Cayuga White. I normally don't like reds, but their Root 63 is one of my favorite wines. Ever. They also do wine and chocolate pairings I think every weekend! They also have live music, food options, and an adorable selection of wine-related household items. This place was such a treat! We were in the area for the weekend and stopped in for a tasting. I did the wine and chocolate tasting, which I highly recommend. I did the reds and will have to come back to try the whites. Both the chocolates and the wines blew me away (chocolate with cracked black pepper!) My favorite wine ended up being the Root 63 Cafe, which surprised me. It's infused with coffee, which I wasn't sure about, but it turns out it's amazing! Friendly, helpful service. read more

I LOVE this winery! The selection of wines is extensive and there's a great variety of sweet and dry wines in both white and red. Basically anyone who goes there will find something they like. The location (Goshen) is also a nice drive and scenery, too. On Sundays they have a food truck there, which is a wonderful option. They also have an acoustic musician that is set up outside on patio. The patio area is a good size. The indoor area is much smaller - like 6 tables, I believe. They are opened during the winter, but it'll be interesting to see where they sit customers. I came here on a Saturday afternoon with 3 others to enjoy the beautiful weather and some good wine. The place was very busy and had almost no seating available. Luckily we were able to grab a table outside and the get a bottle of their Bordeaux style wine. It was good and reasonable for the price. The place it self was also cute and had nice grounds. This is the best winery in the nearby area. They have great indoor/outdoor spaces. The staff is very nice as well. The Chardonnay was the best I tasted, but the price point was a little high for the quality. During the winter they usually have a mulled wine that really kicks off the fall holiday season. Worth a visit, but I recommend going early, it fills up fast. read more

This was our last stop on our Connecticut winery tour, as it is my friend Kaite's favorite, and in her opinion the best to end the day by buying a bottle and relaxing on the lawn. Arriving a little after 4pm there were quite a few people who had the same idea to finish their day here, or had just been here all day. We started by browsing the shop a bit. Of the three wineries we did this had the most in terms of a gift shop. I actually ended up getting some wine pajamas that were only clearance for only ~$15, and some fun science themed wine magnets. They also had a few snacks for sale and I ended up buying some port wine cheese. We had packed cheese and veggies for a little picnic here, but we didn't have port wine cheese and I couldn't resist. The snack prices are a little on the high end, kind of like when you buy candy at the movie theater, but the port wine was delicious, and worth the $7 in my opinion. We did the tasting, which was $6 each. The bar area inside was quite busy, but they were happy to show our larger group outside so we could all be together for the tasting. Overall I was impressed with the wines here, with the Cayuga white being their pride and joy receiving quite a few awards. When we finished the tasting we had paced a picnic for our last stop and grabbed a picnic table on the lawn to enjoy our veggie and cheese spread, with each of us buying a bottle to enjoy. I ended up purchasing two bottles of the twisted red, one to have there, and one for later in the night as that was my favorite from the tasting. The lawn here is great with all sorts of picnic tables and chairs up on a hill overlooking the vineyards. It's really a perfect location. They allow dogs on the lawn so of course I probably spent as much time introducing myself to dogs as I did drinking and snacking. A little before six they warned us that it was last call inside at the bar, as the winery closes as 6, so we started packing up and heading out. This was definitely the perfect place to end the day as they had the most seating for groups coming to enjoy a bottle outdoors. I also felt their wine was the most traditional of those I tasted during the day. with their twisted red and Cayuga white being most comparable to California wines. If you want a small and intimate winery this one maybe isn't it, as it felt a little more commercial than the first we visited, but with great wine and a great view, it's still a perfect stop. read more

Since we had the day off on Valentine's Day this year we decided to take a scenic drive to Sunset Meadow Vineyards for the Red Wine and Chocolate tasting. It did not disappoint! We were helped by Chris who was not only extremely knowledgeable, but very kind and down to earth. The tasting room is adorable and the grounds are beautiful. This was the second stop in Part 3 of our attempt to complete the 2013 CT Wine Trail. We mapped it out so that we stopped for a tasting, hopefully purchase a bottle (or 2) of wine to have with the picnic lunch we packed. Lovely drive up to this vineyard in Goshen that sits atop a hill and has some gorgeous views of the vineyard itself as well as of the surrounding area. We got there soon after they opened and headed into the tasting room. In addition to the wine, the tasting room also sells a variety of wine paraphernalia and snacks. The room itself is very nice with deep wooden floors that give the area a rustic almost country appearance and feeling. There is also additional seating in an annex to the tasting bar for those days when sitting outside is not an option. The tasting went smoothly. The staff was attentive and no one in our party felt rushed or pressured to "get to the next pour". We tried a variety of whites (I am getting used to the fact that every CT Winery produces a "popular" Cayuga and/or Cayuga blend) and reds and purchased the Root 63, a fruity semi sweet wine to accompany our lunch. The wine was very refreshing in the hazy, hot and humid afternoon, but we did not purchase any to bring home. Honestly - none of them really blew me away and their "popular" wines were my least favorite. However if you are looking for a place to have a nice picnic lunch with some great views and have the time to drive here, I recommend Sunset Meadow Vineyards. In addition to tables and chairs on the patio, they have picnic tables, as well as adorandox chairs to lounge on. It also seems to be one of the more popular vineyards we have encountered along the trial as while we were having lunch the parking lot got crowded. This seems to be one of those places where it is better to arrive on the earlier side or have to elbow your way into the tasting room and to find some where to sit outside. read more

My favorite winery on the CT wine trail. The shades of risqué wine is the best in the state, and they infuse chocolate truffles with them. I've been here at least 10 times in the past 4 years and every time I'm even more impressed. Very nice staff and owners, and all the other wines are very delicious as well. They always have a wine slushie to try in the summer or some spiced wine in the winter, and I recommend trying those as well. Buy a bottle and sit out on their patio for a relaxing afternoon. This is one of the nicer vineyards we have visited to date on the CT Wine Trail. We arrived on a warm summer Sunday afternoon at about 4:30, just as the live music had finished up. The wine tasting bar was completely full and all of the tables outside on the patio were full as well. The vineyard was beautiful, the wine tasting bar was well equipped, they had lots of cute items in their store, and the patio/lawn/porch area was downright idyllic. The bar was staffed with several knowledgeable guys and girls. We sampled 5 wines for $6 and paid an additional $1.50 to sample a 6th, the Merlot Reserve. We also had a "Wicked Dark" chocolate truffle with our red wine. Delicious. The gentleman who was waiting on us was very personable and informed us that roughly 95% of the grapes used in making the wines are grown on site (and they are working towards 100%). They have cheese and crackers on site that can be purchased to enjoy with your wine. It seemed that many of the patrons out on the patio had done so. They also allow outside food to be brought in, but no outside beverages are permitted. It would be nice to go back with a picnic (and get there in time for the live music on Sunday) and have the time to relax and enjoy it a bit more. They also occasionally offer wine and chocolate pairings for around $12 which sounded like fun. The wines we tasted were generally quite good, the best one being the Merlot Reserve. That one was selling for over $33 a bottle, so we chose to take home the Chardonnay and the St. Croix (at $18.99 and $24.99 respectively).. read more

I like Sunset Meadow. I'm beyond the point where I don't do tastings anymore, I generally stick to my newest favorite, Shades of Risque, a pomegranate sparkling wine that is always a hit with everyone, even the non-wine drinkers in our group. It's a nice spot to have picnics, and on some Sundays they have live music outside, which is nice. They also added the wine slushies for anyone who is so inclined. read more

The wine is great. Not all Connecticut vineyards have good wine (I'm a snob) but here they do! Their rose and Vidal Blanc are delicious. They even have wine slushies/slushees! Sunset Meadows has recently opened another winery in Sheffield, MA. Very easy to find next to a local distiller on S. Main St (Rt7). We took a fall foliage ride from CT to MA Thursday and it was a gorgeous ride full of Fall colors. We were greeted warmly at the winery by 2 friendly, informative and helpful wait staff-Kim and Kay. They will help you find THE wine you were looking for. The tasting room is open with inside and outside seating. Wines are served in their signature glasses. In MA. food must be served along with wine and two small food plates are available. I loved the 1320 wine which is similar to their CT White Cayuga. Tastings are $15. They do not have the wine and chocolates pairing in MA but their Ct winery does. That offering can't come to MA. soon enough for me, lol. read more

If you go here in the fall time their hot mulled wine is a must! I love it so much. They even sell a little kit so you can make it at home. If you come in the spring and summer you have to try their wine slushees. They have a red one a white one and I think sometimes they have a peach bellini one (which is my favorite). They sell cheese and crackers and things but you're allowed to bring your own food which is really nice. Also this place is dog friendly. What can be better than that! read more

One of our favorite Vineyards. We had a little gathering here on my birthday, in August and came back a few times since. They were open on New Year's Day, and busy. I love their wine. We always buy a bottle of the Route63 to take home. In the summer they have music on the weekends and a very casual atmosphere. The sunroom with tables is a little small, and usually not much room or available tables. The place is cozy though, with a wood burning stove in the winter. A cute little shop for wine and kitchen items and magnets and other wine and food related items. We bring our own snacks, but you can purchase some snacks there, as well. And pets are welcome. (Outside only, I assume) my son and his girlfriend brought their dog for my party in Aug. we called ahead and saw on the website that they are pet friendly . It's a beautiful Vineyard. read more

My husband and I came to Sunset Meadow on Sunday. It was a beautiful day so we decided to take a nice ride. It was our first time here. The grounds are very pretty. We bought a bottle of the St. Croix, it was excellent. The employees were so helpful and very nice and gave us great information on the different wines. We stayed and enjoyed the great wines and atmosphere. We brought home another bottle of the St. Croix along with a bottle of Twisted Red and the Merlot. We are looking forward to tasting them. My Mom & I went here for the chocolate & wine pairing not really expecting to love it as much as we did. Each wine was paired with a chocolate. You choose either a red or white tasting. I think we had about 5 wines each. It was interesting how much the chocolate brought out the flavors of the wine. Our bartender was extremely nice & knowledgeable. We had a really nice time. I would encourage people to come here & give it a try. The guy behind the counter also gave us recommendations of other places to go in the area. Thorncrest chocolates are about 5 minutes away & each chocolate is made from the milk of a single cow. The chocolates were awesome & they encourage you to go to the barn to see the cows. The red wine slush alone is worth five stars... but the wine tasting host and the wine itself and the overall ambience really made this a great getaway stop and an easy five star review to give! You get five pours for $7! $9 if you want to keep the glass. My girlfriend and I went... It was pretty warm out so we both did white wine pours. I loved the Apple wine and the Cayuga White the best. I also had a chocolate truffle with my wine as well, which really enhanced the experience even more! Our most favorite thing was the red wine slushie! Lovely views, ample seating, and a variety of decent wines. What's not to love? I was lucky to pop in late on a Friday afternoon because judging by some of these reviews, the tasting area gets pretty bumpin' on the weekends! My friend and I had the place to ourselves and sampled a variety of Sunset's wines including their chardonnay, merlot, St. Croix, Twisted Red, and Shades of Risque. All of the selections were pretty good except for the last - their sparkling wine was ridiculously sweet and wayyyy too fruity for my liking. Nice to have dark truffles to pair with the reds though! We each bought a glass of wine (merlot for me!) to enjoy on the patio along with a cranberry cheddar spread and crackers. The winery's interior is super kitschy with tons of corny wine-themed apparel and tchotchkes for purchase. Appreciate that they have snacks (cheese/charcuterie/chocolate) for sale. Outside, the surroundings are predictably scenic and gorgeous! Not sure I'd make the hour drive back but certainly glad I stopped in. read more

SMV has very much stepped up its game. Four years ago, this would have been a much lesser review - the wines and the experience have definitely improved since. $6 to try five wines. A decent price by all means, but it nevertheless presents a problem when the winery makes twelve wines. And unlike most Connecticut wineries, you don't get to keep the glass. C'mon ya cheapskates... The tasting table and seating areas are really pleasant. Buy some wine by the bottle or glass, pair it with one of their available cheeses, and sit by the wood-burning stove. You are now the embodiment of all things Connecticut. Most importantly, the wines have improved. I really like the Vidal Blanc (several New England vineyards make a fantastic one), and the Twisted Red, a blend of estate and outsourced grapes, if I'm not mistaken. Quite generous pours too. Very important when you're trying to accomplish the most important goal of a Connecticut wine tour - pretending to be classy while really just wanting to get trashed. read more

Nice location, but I'm not sure what they serve should be considered wine. Every pour had a juice box flavor that left a plastic coating taste on your tongue that lingered far longer than preferred. As far as service, the employee who helped us generally lacked knowledge and was slow to assist with anything. However, if you like what I assume is similar to sweetened bath tub booze, this is a good place to check out. read more
