It's nearly impossible to get them to answer the phone. They have such minimal staff, I get it, running a small business is hard, no big company to cover you. But they have too many animals & not much space. There are so few animal supply stores that have live snake food locally. Or drive to Chatsworth, which has an excellent reptile store, but it's a drive. read more

Burbank Scales N Tails is a really cool local fish shop. They also have other types of pets but I only come for the fish. Spoke to Vahe, the owner about possibly ordering some fish. Down to earth and really cool. Actually all the employees were very friendly and helpful. They're definitely more focused on fish but they have a decent amount of plants for sale. Just need to ask them the price for whatever plant you want as they're not displayed. They also have multiple aquascaped aquariums that are really well done. This is the neighborhood "mom and pop" type pet store. It is quite unkempt on the interior, but they have a good selection of live animals, feed, and supplies. FYI I come here for aquarium needs. Pros: - accommodating staff. Requested a plant that didn't have a label and the employee asked her boss and they were able to sell it to be for a great price - great selection of reptiles (snakes, lizards, etc.) - one of the few places that consistently has springtails or isopods - I don't talk to people but every time I've shopped at the store there always seems to be a good conversation happening - prices seem standard, though I've compared and they often have slightly lower live aquatic animal/plant prices. Support local! Cons: -not the friendliest staff, I often don't get a "hello" at the register, let alone be told the total amount -There's been an unused, dirty fish tank wall as long as I can remember and it's just in the way and ugly (but i understand the struggles with hoarding) - they don't have a lot of aquarium plants and most plants do not have prices. -understaffed it seems, so be patient with them (waited about 30 mins to be helped cause there was only one person working the aquarium area) - bird cages look unhealthy The place needs to be cleaned up. The staff needs to have better work ethic. That being said. Scales N Tails has been my go to pet store since living in Burbank. I have conures, but I refuse to buy anything for my birds here. BUT I do also have paludariums and a pond and this shop has provided me with most of my live animals and plants. I have not had any issues with disease or mortality. I'm writing as a long-time customer who has always loved coming to Burbank Scales & Tails. However, I had a very upsetting experience during my recent visit that I feel you should be aware of. I mistakenly parked in the handicap spot for just a few minutes while quickly grabbing something. I completely acknowledge that this was an error on my part. When I returned to my car, a man( big, bold, white with blue ugly top) who I later noticed appears to supply your store, pulled up and became extremely aggressive with me, yelling and claiming to be handicapped (despite not having a visible placard or any indication of that). I calmly apologized and asked him to please speak respectfully, but he continued to escalate in a very hostile and inappropriate way. To make things worse, I was already emotionally vulnerable, as I've been deeply distressed over the current Iran-Israel conflict and worrying about my family back home in Tehran. I truly didn't have the emotional bandwidth to deal with such aggression, and it left me shaken. I'm saddened that someone affiliated with your store would treat a customer this way. I felt threatened and disrespected, and I hope this is something you'll take seriously. That's not a good store. Worker sold me Mojave Ball Python for $300 with all equipment which brought my total to $880 claiming that this is a deal because the price on that snake usually $400 even tho this is the most average ball python genetic with average price UNDER $100. So if you're not experienced and trying to get advice from workers of this shop - bad idea. They'll just rip you off. They have plenty of reptiles and are knowledgeable about them. I did see some reptiles that were not for sale. I'm assuming that they are boarding them or they might just be pets. I've been to many different reptile stores from Simi Valley to Burbank and this is the only store that has adult reptiles. Most have baby and juveniles but this one had many adults. The environment was also pretty clean and well ventilated compared to others that I have been to. The only drawback was the customer service and the parking. I had asked for help and it took them a while to come help me I honestly thought that they had forgotten and was about to leave but when they did come they answered all my questions and were very knowledgeable. As for parking I only saw about 4 parking spots in front plus 1 handicap parking spot. read more

I purchased a saltwater fish tank from them 2 months ago from the owner of this place every time I come to get the specific fish, I've been looking for they never have them in stock. I show up when they tell me, they're going to have it in stock and they have another excuse as to why they don't and then that today, the same thing happened and the guy in the fish department had offered me 2 gallons of water for free, because I needed to change some of the water out of my salt water tank and because of the constant Inconvenience, that's how he had chose to accommodate the situation at the register, the owner the same man who sold me the saltwater tank in the first place, says i'm sorry for any miscommunications, but you need to be charged for the water.I explained all this to him and it was very clear based on his attitude he cared more about making monry off of 2 gallons of water then keeping a customer because now I will not be returning. And the 2 friends of mine that I've recommended this place will hear about my experience and most likely return to where they used to go to the place that I will now be going to in the future. read more

I stumbled upon this store when I was in the area. It by far has the most reptile stuff that you can find at a reptile convention. Food, supplies, live animals. It's really hot, not sure if their A/C works. But it's kinda stinky. They have really neat reptiles for sale and on display by the front counter. A good place for feeders and other critters not traditionally at big box stores- worms, roaches, etc. My favorite part of the store is the freshwater fish section. I was able to get a sparkling gourami here for cheap, I think $3.99. The man was helpful and none of the tanks had dead fish in them. The freshwater section looked healthy and clean. I guess you mostly care about the stuff you're interested in, right? I do think the turtle section could be improved, but if many people buy the turtles, they may not be as cramped. read more

Stopped by this local reptile and aquatics shop because I was in the area. It was a nice change from the big box pet stores. Came in for some crickets and was surprised how reasonably priced they were. They had a pretty nice selection of reptiles, with some rarer species. I overheard one of the sales associates helping a customer and really liked what I was hearing. He was patient, knowledgeable and not overly salesy. The different pythons in here are severely neglected. The yellow one is obese and has no room to move around, no room to soak. The Burmese is in the tiniest cage. This place makes me extremely sad. The animals here are not well taken care of. I hope that an exotic rescue or sanctuary comes in to rescue these babies. Scales N' Tails - do better. Treat your animals right. read more

I just walked into the store super excited thinking this is going to be great. I have another place that I can go to to buy my supplies for my many animals. And I see the guy cleaning out the guinea pig cages, quite aggressively I might add. I looked down at a hairless guinea pig. Considering possibly purchasing one, I said "are we allowed to pet them? " Then with a smug smile and sarcastic tone he said to me "no they have teeth." What? They have teeth? I'm a wildlife rehabber, is he kidding me right now? I thought to myself, do I look like a small child to you? You sell guinea pigs, I'm looking to buy a guinea pig. How else do you get to know a guinea pig unless you handle it with some supervision from the staff? Isn't that part of your job as a rep for your pet store? To help me handle it, if I'm considering purchasing it? So I said can I hold it then? He said, " generally, no." As if to imply that if I was someone else maybe I could hold it. However since I was annoying him he wasn't going to let ME hold it. That's OK buddy hold onto that small little bit of power that you have at the pet store dude! You can have it So needless to say they just lost a customer and what could've been a pretty good customer considering that I rehabilitate numerous types of wildlife. Hence the reason I'm so familiar with teeth, turns out. I also have a pretty solid connection to a lot of people who need a lot of wildlife supplies. I'm not sure if he had a quick attitude because I spotted him cleaning out the guinea pig cage in a super aggressive way and using the thing that he was cleaning the cages with to move the guinea pigs around with? I thought it was weird but maybe that's just the way they do it? Maybe they don't care about the guinea pigs at all? Is that because they're a feed store? I don't know he sure didn't seem to care about the guinea pig that could've found an epic home. We had the most positive experience at Scales N Tails today! My son really wants a reptile pet so we went in hoping to see a few options and get some info. We had the pleasure of meeting the owner, Vahe, who went out of his way to show my son different geckos/ lizards and explain what caring for each one would entail. Mom brought our family cockatiel to get his beak trimmed. It was a bit strange because it started to grow 2 beaks, but 1 grew so fast it almost poked him in the throat. But fortunately on the way to the shop, he was fluttering in the cage that he managed to knock it off that elongated beak. My mom hadn't noticed yet until she brought in the cage into shop. The bird guy was very kind and provided a lil powder to stop the bleeding. My mom wanted to pay for his kind service. This store always has very healthy looking reptiles, fish, birds, and small mammals (guinea pigs, chinchillas, rabbits, hamsters, etc). The cages and aquariums are always super clean. The most telling factor is this place doesn't stink like a lot of pet stores that aren't cleaned properly. I always see employees cleaning cages and feeding/watering and caring for the animals every single time I've been here. The employees are friendly, helpful, knowledgeable about the animals and proper husbandry. I totally recommend this business. read more

I have been visiting this store off an on through the years. Every time I Google bearded dragons or lizard supplies the name pops up. The place is crammed with some supplies which are over priced compared to many stores I have frequented. The conditions of the housing of the reptiles is so sad to view. Too many together, too small of enclosures if you can call it that. Most are dirty, with dirty water if there is any. It is abuse as far as I can see! Are we to feel sad for them so they will be sold? It likens to a puppy farm, but with lizards. I no longer returning to this store. They should be reported, but to who? read more

This time around, I was determined to step it up a notch and purchase a "Poisonous" Dart Frog! They are seriously beyond rad! Am I crazy? Probably. Is it difficult to find rare, tropical frogs and toads? Yes, sir. But that's where Burbank Scales N Tails comes to the rescue. Anyone in the SFV can tell you that this is THE place to go for reptiles, amphibians, fish, birds, etc. If anyone would have the frog I seek, it would be Burbank Scales N Tails, right? Well, let's find out... The family owned-and-operated semi-exotic pet store holds real estate on Magnolia Blvd in between downtown Burbank and the Noho Arts District near to all of the "Magnolia Park" eateries, vintage stores, and boutiques. Sitting on a corner lot, parking is a tight squeeze with hardly any spots so be ready to look for street parking. Now, if you are expecting some modern, cutesy, or big box pet retail experience... that is NOT what you will find at Burbank Scales N Tails. The second you step inside, you will notice that this is cramped central. Burbank Scales N Tails has two main rooms each striving to fill all existing space. The first contains products, reptiles, amphibians, small furry creatures like guinea pigs and hamsters, spiders, and the service desk which also sells crickets and meal worms to feed all these types of animals. The next room has cages of birds (canaries, finches, parakeets and a loose parrot of some sort that was adorable) and tanks and tanks of tropical fish and accessories. Adding to this claustrophobia is a ton of people. Burbank Scales N Tails is seemingly more popular than a Hollywood club and the line was loonngggg at the counter, the phone was ringing off the hook (never answered), and people seemed to be running around like chickens with their heads caught off. It is a chaotic space and a somewhat crazy experience. If the tight squeeze doesn't deter you; prime yourself for the disarray. Burbank Scales N Tails is dusty, messy, and lacking organization. It is like the pet store version of someone's storage unit or Aunt Greta's attic. Wacky. Eccentric. Odd. Another complaint rings high on the meter at Burbank Scales N Tails: customer service or in this case, the lack thereof. There are simply not enough employees here to help everyone and I stood waiting for over 17 minutes for help (I watched the time) as staff ignored me. The one younger guy in the fish area said he couldn't help me with my frog question because he worked with the fish. I finally caught the attention of whom I believe is the owner whom, admittedly, was kind and answered my questions (the dart frog I seek is a "summer frog" and won't be in-store until about April). But overall, I felt unwelcome, waited much too long for service, and the man in the fish area needs to educate himself on other parts of the store being that there are no other employees on the floor! Also of note: the prices at Burbank Scales N Tails are NOT Petco or Petsmart level and are higher which makes sense being a neighborhood, local shop. But be ready to stuff your wallet before heading to the store. All that said, Burbank Scales N Tails is clearly the optimal place to find a rare species or breed of reptiles, amphibian, fish, and birds and I will return to check out the dart frog stock. Basically, Burbank Scales N Tails is 'okay' and average but certainly has areas to improve. read more

Wanted to try a new place to buy frozen thawed feeder mice (ended up not buying none) but I don't understand how the owner/workers keep these snakes in these conditions. (Hopefully they have a bigger enclosures somewhere else and just place them there so the customers can view them) but at the store I saw pythons (Burmese and ball) enclosed together in small enclosures, no water, no hides, and old shed pieces covering the bedding. I wished i would have taken more pics to show case the living conditions for these reptiles. One of the snakes was stargazing the whole time, and it was still being sold. I see many reviews saying how great and knowledgeable they are...but if they were, why sell snakes who are clearly stargazing, which is a sign of a potentially serious underlying medical problem? Very sad how everything is set up for the snakes and other reptiles. Wish no star was an option read more

TLDR: Scales n Tails sold me a sick skink for $300 and refused to refund it or admit fault. I went into Scales n Tails a few weeks back and got a baby blue tongued skink. When I was buying it, one of the workers mentioned that he had raised the skink himself, and the skink had previously had an issue with not opening his eyes, but claimed that this issue had cleared up. I thought nothing of it, took home my new pet, and set him up exactly like my 2 other blue tongued skinks. Within a 3 days of bringing him home, he starts having the issue of not opening his eyes again, and 2 days after that, they start bubbling; a clear sign of a respiratory infection. He also crackles a bit when hissing. I consulted my veterinarian, and she confirmed that he had a respiratory infection. I then call the shop explaining the situation. I asked if I could by chance get a refund, being that it's obvious he was sold to me sick, as he started to show symptoms before even being sold and had a clear respiratory infection within days of purchase. The worker asked me questions about my husbandry, which I happily answered. I clarified that I had not set up any sort of humidity for him yet, so his problem was not a result of excess humidity. The worker asked me about the temperature of the warm end of the tank. I said 90 degrees, and he immediately hopped on that and told me that it should be 5 degrees hotter, and that my error in husbandry was the reason he got sick. I ask him "Do you really think that a 5 degree temperature difference gave him a respiratory infection in a matter of days, when he had shown symptoms before purchase?" The worker then raises his voice at me, telling me it's clearly my fault, and starts asking me if I'm unaware of the fact that they don't produce their own body heat, at which point I hung up, because I wasn't interested in arguing. I have 2 other blue tongued skinks that have both been in my care for about 5 years and have never had any health issues. I have also been rescuing and rehabbing reptiles for about 8 years now. It was clearly not an issue of my husbandry. If anything, the poor conditions in the shop that other reviews have noted would have caused his illness. Anyway, I am now paying several hundred dollars in vet bills to treat his respiratory infection and have received nothing but attitude from the staff. Save yourself and steer clear of this shop if you want a healthy animal. read more

I really enjoy my visits to scales n tails. They are quick, efficient and friendly. The owner/ staff is very knowledgeable and give amazing advice/recommendations on lighting, knowing terrarium size adequate for reptiles, diets and overall good reptile keeping habits. I bought a Chinese water dragon that has been heathy since the day I brought her home. A separate time, I walked in and was looking for a bigger terrarium for my Chinese water dragon. A young man with glasses helped me. I told him about my water dragon and how I wanted to get my dragon a bigger tank. He without hesitation knew the exact terrarium for my reptile. I must say, the tank was very large and it was impressive seeing the employees work together. Very organized. I appreciate the staff for always being great, but that day it stood out. This pet store is a great one stop! Great for beginners to learn from passionate reptile keepers. They have the best light bulb selection too. Hands down one of the best shops... Highly recommend!
