I just left there today and there are bees everywhere so if you're allergic, just be careful. There was a lady there today and I noticed that they have the scale. So I made sure that I was there leaning over so I can see how much my stuff was weighing. My aluminum weighed 14.5 and when I got the receipt it was 10.0. So they are being totally dishonest. She tried to say that the basket is a fee of two. I never heard that before. So now I have to find another place to go because I know, without a doubt, they are putting the extra money in their pocket. read more

He handed me about $10 and I asked him to show me the scale because I know that's not the correct weight, he got mad and took the money back from my hand, he then threw the bottles in front me. Saturday, 07/11/2026 at 11:48am I did a recycling run because my wall limit was full where I like to store and collect my recycling in my house. I know that for some of us picky people, we wished that other's would carry the same logical trait of being better organized, ready, and efficient. Basically, we wish that other's would think like us, but that is smoke and mirrors when that thought is contemplated. Where ever I am going, I like to be overly prepared for the journey and the objective that I'm about to encounter. I have passed this recycling center once or twice while driving in back of the shopping outlet plaza to just pass through. I had been tempted to try this recycling center since the one I knew of near by my house closed. This recycling center in my eye's is a hidden Easter egg located at 2469 Via Campo Montebello. CA 90640 (In back the shopping outlet plaza). The parkings a bit tricky if one has never parked in a designated area that didn't contain parking lines. I had my recycling ready to go and just needed their collection recycling bins to barrow. I filled the recycling bins up and waited less than five minutes to cash out for my recycling return. The associates working together from the times I have just passed through and my first visit seemed very quick, efficient, and organized. I didn't seem to feel stressed while waiting. Although, I bet anything that it drives the associates insane for the customers that don't come prepared and take their time sorting out there recycling which should have been sorted out at home or the other destinations before the thought of coming to the Recycling Center. My personal opinion...The associates only have so many bins to loan to each customer. And as a personal, I like to rinse all of my recycling when I collect it. To many bad reviews I've been there once. Not again. No receipt or any info. They just hand you money. No idea if it's correct.

This was a guy and a girl working today. The man was a little disturbed because I chose to keep an eye on the scale. He asked me to stand on the other side of the table , I then commented if he can face the scale so that I can too see it. He didn't want to. I seen my plastics weight of 19.3 lbs. when I looked at my receipt it was marked at 16 lbs. Mad as hell! Why? We go through a lot just to save them with the hopes of having a lil extra for gas. Now it seems these people think they are entitled to a percentage of our hard earned change. This is not the first time it happens here at this location. These workers here ALL TAX YOU! Sunset Recycling Center - Proof !!! My plastics weighed 19.3 He shushed me away from being able to see what the cans weight was. - Recycling Center Near Me - Montebello, California

On Monday, June 8, 2026 at around 4:30 p.m. My roommate and I showed up to Sunset Recycling located in the parking lot of the shopping center at Via Campo and Wilcox Ave. in Montebello. When I walked up to retrieve one of those manmade holding containers they provide to weigh the recyclables, I saw the attendant sitting inside playing with his phone. Mind you, there were other customers around and he did not bother to approach them to ask if they needed help. He did not lift his face off the screen until he saw me weighing the empty holder on the scale. When he saw me doing this, he promptly ask if he could help me. I told him "I just want to make sure the weight posted is accurate." I could see it in his face that he did not like it, but he did not say anything and just stood there watching my every move after that. My roommate and I proceeded to fill up about 4 of their containers with plastic bottles and 6 with aluminum cans. When my roommate was in the process of filling up the last container with aluminum cans, a second employee came back from shopping (he had a plastic bag filled with stuff), proceeded to place that bag inside, and finally came out to offer help to my roommate. My roommate told him that was the last one and said thanks, but did not accept his help (he was done already, why is he asking if one needs help until he sees that there is nothing left inside the van?) By this time, I had already placed myself next to the table (the spot from where the video was taken). I had a notebook and pen ready to write down the weight of each of my containers together with the weight of each of those containers to later deduct it from the total weight so I knew exactly how much they needed to pay me. Yes, I do read the reviews before I go there and I have found some very helpful ones that prepared me for what was about to happen. The 2nd employee proceeded to start weighing my recyclables starting with the plastic. One by one, I was noting the weight of the container plus the total weight at the same time that the 1st employee was supposed to be doing the same thing. Once all the plastic was weighed, I quickly did the math and came up with 40 dollars and some cents worth of plastic. Nope! The 1st employee said it was 26 dollars! I was like, WHAT! So he comes up to me when I said that and he goes, how much did you get? I showed him my notes and told him 40 dollars! He goes, well, your math is wrong! I was like, okay, let's do the whole thing again so we can see who is wrong. He goes, can't you see how many more people are waiting? I go, yes, of course I can, but that does not justify you trying to rip me off! I could see it in his face how upset he was, but he RELUCTANTLY did pay me the 40 dollars and asked me to sign the receipt. Here's where the interesting part started. He had already realized I was not going to let him rip me off so, he went into actor mode and went to check my aluminum cans. He was turning the cans from once side to the other and was showing the 2nd employee whatever he was looking at. When he came back to speak to me, he said he needed to call the owner before he could buy my aluminum cans. I said okay, why? He goes, I just need to make sure that I can buy those. I go, okay, go ahead. Mind you, by this time it was getting close to their closing time and there were other customers waiting. This is when I started recording the video I will be posting with this review in 3 parts due to the length of it. In the video, you will hear how his conversation (in Spanish) with the person on the phone goes. He's clearly talking about a container that is already full (ya se llenó el container). Not even once did he say anything about the "codes" that he claimed our cans had and he was questioning. Furthermore, once he was done talking on the phone, he asked me to wait for the "owner" to call him back because he claimed that he was the only one who could decide if he could buy my cans. At the end of the video, you can hear how he came up to the conclusion that he was not going to buy my cans and why I left after selling him my plastic only. My roommate and I placed our aluminum containers back in the van, and we left. My roommate says they were recording us and the license plate of our van when we left. I did not see this happening. On Friday, June 19, 2026, I went alone to sell the aluminum cans to Green/Clean Planet Recycling located at 623 W. Olympic Blvd. in Montebello (a few miles away from this location). Not only did they have better prices ($1.80 compared to $1.66 per pound at Sunset Recycling), but I had the best experience I have had so far. Please go check my review for Green/Clean Planet Recycling next so you can see how they are a way better option to sell your recyclables. I do not know the owners or anyone there, I am just a new customer that will for sure continue to give them my business from now on. If you just need a place to drop your recycles off and don't care about pricing, this is local and quick. Located behind Five Below/Best Buy. Sometimes they're not open right at 9am, staff is blunt and just there to do their job. A lot of time staff is on a personal phone call via earbuds while weighing your recycles. I've never seen a line here, usually about 2-4 people at a time through out the day. Glass goes in the plastic 50 gallon trash bins. Plastic and aluminum goes into the netted makeshift bins. California now added wine and distilled spirits (brandy, gin, rum, tequila, vodka and whiskey) into the CRV program starting on Jan 1st, 2024. We can finally recycle those hard liquor bottles and for much more! I was impressed with this location compared to the Whittier location. They made sure to count the very small plastic CRV containers individually, e.g., Yakult, so I'd be fairly reimbursed. The other location didn't do that and a lot of times the receptacles were not squarely placed on the scales at the Whittier location. In addition, they are computerized so I'm assuming my information will be in their system the next time. Also, the personnel were pleasant and informative. read more

I had an amazing experience six months ago, and a terrible experience today. 1/2025 - Employee explained to me the weight of the baskets - Wrote down the weights, explained to me the sum, and paid me accordingly - Nicer older gentleman with glasses, incredibly friendly and sold me to come back the next time 7/2025 - Charged me for glass bottles (I had ZERO glass) - Undercharged me weights for both aluminum AND plastic - When I went to add my glass, the employee "already charged me, look at the receipt". - Younger gentleman with piercings I can only assume adding glass to underpays on total received, and cashing in on your extras later on. This place gives a terrible amount of return for recyclables. As several others have commented on Yelp, either their scales are way off and/or the tare weight is way too high. Also, they turn the numbers on the scale away from you, so you can't see the amount they are recording. This place ought to be reported to the BBB. Very shady! I recycle on a consistent basis and this place gives the lowest return - by far! I highly recommend not going to this place. Do yourself a favor and take your recyclables elsewhere. read more

Close (off the 60 freeway), convenient, and large parking area behind the 3 Men's Suit shop. First time coming here was a little challenging to find, but there are signs leading you to the recycling center ( I just wasn't paying attention). I only recycle the few bags of recyclable from home so it's very fast. Even if there's people there with trunk-full of recyclables, it's still very quick IMO. Smooth system in place: separate your aluminum, glass and plastics prior for an easy process. Drop each category in a bin they provide (they have plenty) and go and weigh in! When I took my recycling couldn't understand why I was getting so little. Then they said they don't pay for other plastic, only bottles. They recycle the bulk as a favor. I told them that all plastic has a recycling value, detergent bottles. Large tea bottles. Etc. He said not here. But he makes bank when he turn them in. RIP OFF. read more

Just came from this location. It's done and over with. Guys there weight your items and put scale facing away from you. So you have no way of exactly knowing what you took in. Once you point it out. I have always had a good experience here. I live in San Gabriel and have a recycling place within a mile from where I live. The employees there were weighing my cans and plastics in a few seconds and I could not see what the weight was. I came down to this Montebello location which is another 6 miles further. They help you unload your cans and are willing to help drag your recyclables to the scales. Unfortunately you do not see this anymore in recycling places. I've been very happy here and will drive the extra 12 miles round trip because of the service. read more
