Beer nerds unite. Named after a creek that used to run through Queens back when this part of town was all farmland, Sunswick is Astoria's answer to a craft beer bar. It's a nice spot to counterbalance the influential beergarden(s) that make Astoria famous across the city. The beer selection is impressive too -- 25 brews on tap, with a preference to domestic hoppy ales and lagers. I swear that someone could take me to Sunswick blind folded and tell me that I am in Chicago or Milwaukee or Portland and I would probably believe them. The environment is pretty laid back and Midwestern. Definitely not a "scene". The biggest distraction (other than what beer to try next) is ESPN playing on mounted TVs (which I usually find a bit annoying, but in this case, it is okay... perhaps its the Midwestern effect again). The menu also serves up higher-quality gastropub fare, such as gourmet burgers and fries. This may just become one of my favorite bars in Queens. read more

The best beer bar I've seen in queens and one of the best beer selections in terms of draught i've seen. 26 beers, including a Lambic. wow. and the beers they do have are good ones, including some you won't find in many other places. It's a nice place, clean, and reasonably priced. I subtracted one star because they gave the girl in our group an orange in her blue moon, but no orange for me. twice?! how do you forget the orange. anyway, nice place. definitely a good time if you're in the area and looking for a good bar in queens. read more

Love Sunswick! The beer selection is fantastic, very much impressive! The atmosphere is great, too, especially if you can go in for a drink during that 4 -6 pm time slot, not very crowded, and easy to find a great place to park your rump. The food was not as impressive as it could be for me; I shouldn't complain THAT much, being a vegetarian and attempting to find good pub food is near impossible. Get the sweet potato fries, though, WAY worth it. Try the DogFish Head 90 Minute IPA on tap - but be warned, it packs a punch! Overall, very impressed. read more

really? people actually like this place for their food? i can see how this place is good for all like the 10 types of draft beer they offer (too bad i don't drink anymore), but their food and service? no. not really. not at all. there is one thing i can't stand and that is bad service. i know that the servers here weren't being intentional, and how could i expect a lot from a neighborhood bar, but the people working there had to be some serious space cadets for sure. i know that it doesn't take long to make an order of fries and a burger. i also know that food shouldn't be served cold -- especially if the food requires deep frying. so after a considerable amount of time had passed, and i looked back at the server to give her the "where-is-our daggon-food-look," and i hear her say, "oh yea..." while walking to the back to get the food. i guess she was too busy doing whatever else she was doing to notice that the only people sitting at the eating section, and not drinking beer, were without food. i don't know... i even heard the kitchen bell ring twice -- you know, the ones you tap with your hand at hotel concierges, letting them know our food was ready. seriously, how could i not rip this place apart in my review after this? anyway, as far as taste goes, their cheeseburger sucked. their coleslaw sucked too. and too bad their waffle fries were cold, not to mention we got literally got like 8 fries total. read more

If you're a beer lover, you have to come here. They have absolutely every kind of taste and variety you would want. The stuff on tap changes every month or so (correct me if I'm wrong) and comes from microbreweries around the region. The bartenders and staff are very friendly, approachable and knowledgeable about their rotating selection. Special shoutout to Thomas for always helping me find the prefect beer for the night. They also sell food. The wings are fantastic! There's table, a little lounge area (sofa) and plenty of seats by the bar. The atmosphere is great and positive. There's always great music playing and some funky stuff playing on the TVs- so even if you come alone you'll be entertained. My only gripe is not being able to have a "favorite" beer since the selection is always changing. Nevertheless, try something new or talk to your favorite bartender to help you find something that works for you. They're great. Thank you guys for always giving quality service. read more

Sunswick is a cozy little bar with an excellent selection of brews on tap. They also have a good list of bottled Belgian-style beers to choose from. On a recent visit, we had fried pickles, which were new on their menu, and nachos. The fried pickles were ever-so-lightly battered and fried until crisp, and the dipping sauce it came with had quite a kick. I'd definitely order those again. The nachos were good - portion was pretty big, and came with chili and blue corn tortilla chips. It was surprisingly quiet on a Friday evening, but we were there early. Sunswick is the neighborhood bar every neighborhood wishes they had. If you're feeling hungry get their burger. For real, it is amazing, delicious, oh so juicy, and their fries are spot on. They've got an amazing beer list and I like the added touch of TV screens displaying what they have on tap. Their service is excellent, the kitchen is great, and the prices are right. Food remains excellent, beer selection is getting outpaced by places like Station House, The Jeffrey, etc. but most noticeably at 5pm yesterday the service remains TERRIBLE. The millennials manning the bar and room were more apt to look up from their smartphone than pay attention to a request for more bleu cheese or another beer.. this has been a trend at Sunswick for the past 5 years, as I used to be a local. After they renovated and got the digital beer menu, the vibe went pretentious and service deteriorated. read more

I really do not know where to begin, and I am not about to write a long a** review on why my experience was down right lousy, I tend to keep my reviews short and sweet. Short and sweet.. wish that was the my visit here at this joint.... Went there mid-afternoon craving what most ppl crave on a Sunday afternoon after a slight hangover:good beer and a great burger. Waited for 20 mins to be served by the bartender/waiter - who not only failed to give us the beer menu (there are well over 20 something on tap, and being a newbie here u need one) which he knew he was in the wrong- he told us that he was hungover and forgot- P.S we had noo clue he was also serving food.. clearly he saw us looking at the food menu, we assumed the waitress/waiter was on a break.. FINALLY after giving us the beer selection WE had to go over to the bar so we can put in our food order.. Still, waiting, and waiting and waiting while the bartender/waiter was attending to the overely pretentious local hipsters gave me my freakin burger only to have it w/ the wrong side: I asked for sweet potato fries, I got waffle fries... Once again, I HAD TO WALK back to the bar.. not like he came to the table.,, told him what I ordered, he was sorry, and blamed it on his hangover... AGAIN. Got my sweet potato fries and ANOTHER sorry hangover story.. waahh waahh waaahhh , oh and the hungover bartender/waiter told me waffle fries ARE ON THE HOUSE! !!!! uMMMM... BAD BUSINESS!!!! If I could give no stars I would. Sunswick bartender gave away my credit card to another patron at the bar on a slow evening and took a very long time to tell me that my card was even missing. The card had been erroneously charged and had other fraudulent charges on it. Management was rude and unhelpful and no recourse was given. We were frequent patrons of this bar but after the poor service and treatment we will not be going here again. read more

Cool place if you just want to have a drink at the bar. Don't bother if you're seated at a table and ordering food. The service was lacking in all areas: couldn't find us a menu, lack of knowledge of menu items, overall lack of effort. Literally a beacon of light amongst a sea of residence. Sure, Astoria offers plenty in terms of watering holes, so why is Sunswick even relevant? It has a very Williamsburg feel to it. Just a nice low key chill place that plays good music while you sip on some beer you can't get anywhere else. A great place to have a pint while mulling over the greater mysteries of the universe, or debating who is a better quarterback, Sanchez or Tebow...or none of the above. I will say the TVs here require immediate updating, but they're not trying to be THAT bar. Besides, the grainy screens add to the nostalgia and wonderment. Sunswick, my visits are few and too far apart, but when we do meet, it's always a pleasure. read more

I really like this bar! They have a great selection of beers on draft, good entertainment, and always a fun place to watch a baseball game. My favorite time to come here though is Oktoberfest. They have a great menu and all the Oktoberfest beers on draft, including lots of pumpkin ales (my fav!). This bar is always a good night out! Very chill and friendly. read more

I've been here a couple times -- once recently and once a bit over three years ago -- and enjoyed it both times. I concur with what people are writing about the craft beer selection being top-notch. I recommend catching a movie at the nearby UA theater and then walking here for drinks afterward. That or a trip to MOMI and then drinks. Amazing beer selection on draft with your traditional selection of bar food and then some. Definitely get the buffalo chicken dip. The tortilla chips were extra crispy, which went very well with the chunky dip. The spicy fried pickles were very large slices. Bigger than any I've ever had, not bad.. but not the best. The sauce serve with it was good. Buffalo wings were big and very tasty. I love when wings are drenched in sauce. Comes with blue cheese and some carrots & celery. Lots of other dips you can choose from on the menu as well (for an extra cost, but not much). Prices are good and the place always has a good crowd. Great service at the bar. We noticed the bartender was the only person working, along with a busser/barback and they did a fantastic job. The bar was filled when we walked in and when we were getting ready to leave.. the entire restaurant became filled. Service stayed the same and was great, even though it got very busy. read more

Sadly, I discovered this place only days before I moved to the other side of Astoria so i can no longer fully enjoy Sunswick's greatness. Solid local bar with a large selection of beers. Holy cinco de mayo! Came here cuz it wasn't too packed and they had an awesome margarita special...first plus their margaritas were made on the spot with fresh fruit and not that concentrated stuff that gives u the bubble guts all night...secondly they have about 20 AWESOME beers on tap and they are always rotating! Not sure about the food but who cares here's so much good food in the area, stop by here if studio square is too packed or just love a dive bar with 9.5% alc by volume beers for $6! I was strolling around Astoria alone looking to get some shelter from the rain and in the mood to have a nice beer at an easy going bar. Stumbling upon Sunswick was exactly what I was looking for. Friendly atmosphere from the get-go and a huge selection of beers on tap. wound up here as we decided to grab a drink...okay, two...after the Museum of the Moving Image. a sports pub with a great beer selection, many of which are 5 or 6 bucks. Victory, Captain Lawrence, Lagunitas, Flying Dog, and many other American craft breweries are featured here. there's food too, but we weren't hungry...though the bartender was okay with us eating some of the confectionaries I bought my date. now, here's what grinds my gears: 1) bartender seemed to favor taking care of the home crowd...okay, that's cool, I know some people live in bars because they lack skills needed to function normally...but this should not result in new patrons having to wait ridiculous amounts of time to get the bartender's attention for a second drink. especially on a Sunday when it's not really bumping. 2) when my girl asked him what would mix with a certain flavor of vodka, he gave a standoffish "whatever you mix it with, that's what it'll taste like". bro, chillax and don't take your hatred at working on Sunday out on us! hilariously, there was a guy (possibly homeless) who was annoying the bartender claiming that he was supposed to be paid to watch the door. he reminded me a lot of Smiley from "Do The Right Thing". maybe I'll go back and reconsider...if that bartender admits to killing Radio Raheem. read more

Don't bother ordering the food, I've never had a good meal here. I make the mistake of ordering food almost every time I go and have had practically everything on the menu. I think they can't possibly mess nachos up or grilled cheese up, I'll get that! Wrong! They used the bread ends for my grilled cheese and no one at the table even wanted to touch the nachos. So I placed an order through yelps app and followed up with a phone call to notify the person only had $100 bill and if the individual could have change. Then I called an hr later checking up on order and I was told it was out the door. I then called back again at 1hr 45mins from original order time. to where they denied the call and then called again seconds later to where they picked up unknowingly and were talking shit about me asking for change and fuck him etc etc. I thought it was polite to call and give a heads up and to have to wait 1hr 45mins forget you. If this place were closer to my house, I swear they would know my name. You come here to drink great beer...from everywhere...served by people who can actually tell you about it. I haven't yet met the clueless bartender who keeps appearing in the other reviews. I also love that their menu caters to fat kid moods and healthy kid moods. The set up is a nice mix of bar seats, high tops, four tops, and couches...lots of good options depending on what you need it to be. I've never gone here past 10 or so, so I really can't comment on what it becomes as a nightspot, but I sure do love it for causal dinner or beersnacks! read more

This is my regular Thursday night spot for bingo and karaoke along with some Wednesdays thrown in to the mix for trivia. The bartenders (Especially Tom) and staff here are attentive and hospitable. Juan, the owner, is awesome and makes you feel at home. Love the craft beer selection, which is updated often. The food is great too. A great watering hole for people in the area! read more
