This was such a pleasant, unassuming Mexican restaurant/bakery that was a super surprise based on the surroundings and exterior. When we arrived around 8pm, it looked closed from the outside. It has a small lot out front so there's a bit of parking. Walking in, you could tell this is a no frills restaurant. Decor is minimal, plastic bench type seating, baked goods in cases to the side, small selection of Mexican candies up front. We were greeted and sat quickly, being the only patrons on a cold, rainy Houston Saturday night. We got 2 aguas frescas (lemonade and horchata), menudo, and a barbadoa quesadilla. The horchata was sweet, creamy, and cinnamony and the lemonade was bright and refreshing. The menudo was amazing, rich beefy broth with nice chunks of tripe and pork trotters along with hominy. It was well spiced but not spicy and just so great on a cold day. The barbacoa quesadilla was also so good, probably the best barbacoa I've had in Houston so far. It was super flavorful and rich but not greasy and didn't leave my mouth coated with fat (not that I'm always against that). The salsa verde and roja were also great and thick so it didn't just leak out of the quesadilla. This was such a pleasant surprise that had amazing food and super well priced. Most dishes were under $10 with a few items a couple dollars more. Anyway, this spot deserves much more love than it seemed to be getting. Many years after first trying this restaurant, I am so glad that I came back for a second try and had a truly memorable meal. When we walked in, we were greeted by the enthusiastic staff who helped us find the seat to our liking and provided us with their extended menu. Despite inflation, tariffs and even egg prices rocketing, I'm glad that their price remained reasonable to allow the neighborhood enjoy their delicious meal. Right as we sat down, we were greeted with fresh chips and salsa that kept us satiated while waiting for our food. We got a huge feast and each were delicious. But the highlight has to be the tostado, it was stuffed to the brim with meat, lettuce, avocado, and cream. My girlfriend and I shared (aka fought over) the one we ordered before finally proceeding to the rest of the meal, which was delicious as well. After our meal, we even picked up some of the freshly baked sweet bread home for breakfast for the week. We had a great evening stopping in to Super La Mexicana recently. After a day of running errands and shopping, we were heading home and needed a bite to eat. We were in a newer area for us southwest of NRG stadium and found that they had positive reviews online. It almost appears to be a convenience store on the outside and easy to overlook, but once you step inside you see a number of tables and booths, a wall of baked items on your right, and an order counter in the back. We were warmly greeted by an older gentleman who was so friendly and attentive throughout our meal. The menu has lots of Mexican staples. I went a bit basic with a quesadilla filled with barbacoa, but it was one of the best barbacoa dishes I've had thus far in Houston. What made it to the top of the list? It was as flavorful as any other barbacoa but not overly oily or fatty. My partner, who is a bit more adventurous, tried the Menudo, which is a traditional soup with tripe (cow stomach). The broth was quite good, with a bit of spice but not too much heat. Their chips and salsa appeared to both be homemade, which was another nice treat. Pricing was very reasonably. The photos and previous reviews fooled me. I thought this was a convenience store with a kitchen in the back, and there are visible signs that this was a corner convenience store at one time. There are remnants of aisles near the back but now the most visible stall is the pan dulce. I expected an overhead menu display like in previous photos but that seems to be gone too. They gave me photocopies of what looked like a cardboard menu to look at. I came here because my usual breakfast spot nearby was closed for the week.I was the only customer eating a late breakfast at 10am but I think there were pickup orders while I was eating. The counter girl was also the lone server but I heard her interacting with the kitchen in the back. Ordered the Huevos a la Mexicana. The eggs were somewhat dry but that is the only quibble. The beans and the potatoes had good flavour. Green sauce had a kick but not much flavour beyond that. Prices were reasonable. read more

I was very excited to try this place because some comments I read on Google claim they have the "best menudo in town". I couldn't disagree more. Not only is their red sauce extremely oily and inedible but let me fill you in on my experience, I ordered one of their tacos, a taco the lengua and the lengua STILL HAD THE SKIN so I couldn't eat the taco. I was very disgusted and began to doubt the cleanliness of their food. If they didn't take the time to clean the tongue what else don't they take the time to do before they serve food? Not more that i can say, but the underwhelming food. It was horrible and not edible. The tacos were dry, bland and not fresh. The meat was definitely re-heated from the night before. The meat smells bad and fishy. Holy moly!!! One of the worst tacos I have ever had. I dont care about the service, ambience etc, if the food aren't good, I will not go back. I tend to love a good divey place. The fact that this place looks like a half abandoned convenience store from the outside only makes me feel like I have uncovered hidden treasure. In truth, I think there may be some actual treasure here, but I had a really hard time finding it. I went in with some co-workers for lunch, and while the food was good, nothing stood out to us as truly exceptional. The kind of meal where you leave satisfied but not necessarily in a rush to come back. Guacamole was really fresh, but bland. My al pastor torta was decent and used great bread, but didn't overwhelm me with flavor. Our server was exceptionally sweet, but it definitely helps here if you know a little Spanish. Several items on our order didn't come out correctly (beef fajitas instead of chicken, plain tostada instead of shrimp, etc.). No one was unhappy with their meals in the end. A local spot for delicious and adorable Mexican cuisine. The food: I have not had anything here that I didn't enjoy. I would say my go-to dish is the chilaquiles roja which has a bit more spice than the verde and comes with a side of refried beans. I also like the lengua quesadilla and the barbacoa taco. The food may be a bit greasy, but that's kind of what I want and expect and it's really a great breakfast treat. Overall: The restaurant looks a bit worn inside and out, but don't let that stop you! Great service! Torta beef fajita and torta pastor 4/5: the bread is nice and toasted, crispy lettuce, plenty of avocado and tomato. The meats can be caramelized more on the grill but seasoned well. They added a good amount of crema too. Barbacoa quesadilla $1.99. Get in on flour, dont get the large, get like 5 of these and you'll be set! Its sooo good. I normally eat barbacoa taco style (corn tortilla, with onion and cilantro) but its excellent in quesadilla form! I am sad that i gave half of it to my son. This is my go to spot for breakfast & lunch when working in the area. Another good example of it's what's inside that counts. Looks can be deceiving for sure. The breakfast tacos are bomb! Always fresh tortillas that are just as hot & tasty as the fillings. Speaking of fillings, they aren't skimpy. Service is always quick & friendly. Heck if you can be consistently smiling, friendly & slinging food at 6:15am on the daily, that's a whole star by itself! Enchiladas verde, tortas & other lunch options have been good. The burrito can double as lunch & dinner. One thing I like is the lunch items are HOT when served. Came here for a late dinner a few weeks back and definitely enjoyed our meals! First, the amount of parking was somewhat limited, but we had no trouble finding a spot since we were eating a little late. We had to wait a second for someone to swing by the register to seat us and provide menus, but I think there were very few people working there, so that's pretty reasonable. Our server was super nice and friendly - the only minor inconvenience is that he brought us our drinks (water and a soda) after bringing us our chips and salsa and entrees. Since the salsa was kind of hot, I definitely was craving some water! The chips and salsa were just OK, but my beef taco was delicious. My wife also really liked her quesadilla. As an aside, when we were ready to pay, we were surprised to see that there was no line on our bill to tip our server! We don't normally carry much cash, so we had to scrounge together some quarters, but we definitely felt bad about that. I love hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurants! The exterior may look a big sketchy and dingy, but I can guarantee that the food here is fantastic. Everything tastes so authentic and flavorful! On my most recent visit, I came here for their breakfast platter, and an assortment of tacos! The eggs, potatoes, and bacon were delicious! You could also tell that the tortillas were homemade! I love when restaurants create real tortillas rather than use the machine made ones from the grocery store. They just taste and feel so much better. I will be sure to make more visits to Super La Mexicana in the future to try out their different entree items. The breakfast burritos are monsterous, delicious, filling and only $4. Just be hungry. For $12 you can order 3 tacos and a burrito that will fill you to the core!!! NOM NOM!!!! Based on the great rating of this place, I came here for breakfast and had the migas plate. It was pretty far out of my way for being a typical Mex breakfast, and I'd say the migas was the epitome of A-OK. You know, eggs, tortilla strips, cheese, with refried beans and fried potatoes on the side. If the salsa had been better than average, it would have taken it up a notch, but it was not. Maybe I'm biased, but I think there is plenty of tasty Mex food in central Houston, so no need to drive far for it. read more

Really authentic and delicious food! My husband and I stopped here on a whim and left very satisfied. At first glance this place is quite unassuming. It's fairly small, and not fancy. First, I'm going to echo other reviews: the salsa is AMAZING. It's hard to even describe... warm and savory are the only words that come to me. You just gotta try it. My husband loved his tacos; he scarfed them down. I was impressed. They are definitely a solid choice. He said next time he'd order them with some cheese, though. My green sauce enchiladas were awesome! The sauce was incredible and very spicy, and the refried beans on the side were the best I have had so far. My only critiques are that the rice side was slightly bland for my taste and the enchiladas needed more structure--they were a little soggy. But overall, super flavorful, and worth every bit. Can't beat the price either. We walked out with those two dishes (plus leftovers) and a cold Coke for just over $20! The only real negative for me was that it was not clear if we should seat ourselves or wait on someone to seat me, because there was nothing suggesting either. It was kind of awkward. It wasn't a the worst food I've ever had, but it definitely wasn't very good. It looked like the food we got had been sitting out all day and they were just getting rid of what was left. We were pretty surprised considering the good reviews and we love finding good spots that don't necessarily look great, but have good food. This was not one of those spots. Both my quesadilla and my fiancé's fajita meat was dry and looked and tasted like it was not cooked fresh. The refried beans tasted off and the agua fresca was not good either. We ordered several items bc of the reviews and super disappointed. Pupusas with cheese - too thick and literally no cheese. Chicken Enchiladas w/ rice - enchiladas were exactly like a taco and the rice was literally the only good thing out of all the dishes we ordered. Gordita - was okay. Barbacoa Taco - this was okay, nothing special. The salsa was okay. The chips were stale. Overall it wasn't great and def can't recommend because we've had way better from a similar type of restaurant. It may not be fancy but this place is Super clean and somewhat cozy. Its our first time to try this place and we've lived not far from it all these years. Truthfully it never looked like anyplace I want to try. But on a whim and seeing the pretty good ratings on Yelp we descided why not. The food is actually really really good!!. Your regular Mexican food but more like homemade! And that just it, it really is homemade. Made for folks brought up eating real Mexican food at home. Super flavorful, tasty and fresh. I Ordered 10 Pupusas and 3 drinks which costed me $45 and some change which I find it pricy but since I saw a great rating on yelp I decided to go for it . Soon as I got back to my job I started eating the first thing I noticed was that the pupusas felt like a fried salvadorean tortilla with no meat mind you that I paid $45 I felt like I needed to come and get at least they money I paid for the pupusas, soon as I got there I brought one plate to prove them since I threw the rest ( trashed it) the manager said if I didn't bring the rest he could only give me $9 dollars which I find it very absurd also they didn't put no curtido ! and the only excuse they come up with was ( We just opened after the storm ) why would you open a restaurant and sell trashy food ? Quaint hole in the wall Mexican kitchen with a small attached grocery store. Spanish is definitely the first language here but if you speak the "language of food" you will do fine. The lady at the counter was helpful and courteous during my visit, and the food was assembled quickly for takeout. No frills here but the space was clean and accommodating. Barbacoa was the best meat sampled here, and it was fantastic. So many places hurry dishes along to meet demand and neglect to build flavor and texture, this place nailed it with this tender, juicy and occasionally fatty offering. We had the barbacoa in torta form, which was meal in and of itself for around 5 bucks. The al pastor was good but somewhat underwhelming in comparison to the barbacoa. I had this in a burrito, which again was generous in size for the price, stuffed along with refried beans, Mexican rice and lettuce. If you are looking for a more authentic Chipotle alternative, give this a shot. There are numerous protein options. Other offerings I tried included a pupusa that was interesting but lacked real flavor, a decent but sparsely adorned lengua taco, and a forgettable chicken tamale. I liked the spicy salsa verde and although I don't generally like chipotle flavor their take on this red salsa was deeply smoky and home made which was excellent. All in all, a solid spot for a quick authentic bite, but I wouldn't drive across town to get here. read more

5 stars for their tacos! Super tasty and my favorite has to be the al carbon taco. The flour tortillas are super good as others have described. The meat wasn't dry and it was very flavorful. I ordered mine with cilantro, cheese, and avocado. Just talking about it makes me want another one. I also ordered the al pastor and a breakfast taco (probably egg, potato, and chorizo...I don't really remember anymore). This is the first time I ever really liked their actual tacos more than the breakfast tacos at a place because I loooveee breakfast tacos haha. Their salsa is pretty good but I wish there was more of a kick. Overall, cheap for some bombass tacos. The cantaloupe juice was a little sweeter than I'm used to but still refreshing. However, their desserts were definitely lacking. I would give the desserts 2 stars probably. Not god awful but definitely not good, and I tried the flan neopolitan and tres leches. Stopped by at this little hidden gem thinking it was some sort of Mexican grocery store, but it's actually a restaurant with a bit of a bakery essence, so you can definitely grab a bit of pan dulce on your way out. I only ordered 2 barbacoa tacos and a pastor gordita, the barbacoa was really good not too dry and not too moist or greasy it just felt good, like something I would eat a nice family gathering, the pastor was different where I couldn't tell much of the marinade but the flavors were just too delicious! The meat was so tender and juicy it combined perfect with the refríes beans and melted cheese. What I love about family owned businesses as this one is that I can tell someone back there in the kitchen definitely cares about their craft. The service the young man that helped was also splendid, often I get treated different because of my style of appearance, but not here I was welcomed and helped with the proper respect. My visit was during lunch hours on a Sunday and it wasn't too busy, If you still not in a mood to dine out order to go I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy it as much I did!! read more
