Planned to have an early dinner here with my mom midweek. Hot day so we sat inside which ended up being warm anyway. Might have been since we were near the kitchen or because their ac couldn't keep up on a hot day. Overall, everything was ok or just not that good. Mom's Texas Margarita was way too heavy on the OJ. My house margarita didn't stand out. We had the basic cheese dip which was good as were the salsas. They took awesome care of me and my friends and we ended up staying for about 2 hours longer than we originally planned. I had low expectations for this place based on some of the reviews I had read, but I have REALLY been wanting puffy tacos and haven't had a chance to get back to San Antonio for them. Despite the low expectations, I was pretty pleased with our visit to The El Felix. We ordered a chicken puffy taco plate, a beef puffy taco plate, and another plate that came with enchiladas, a queso puff, and a puffy tortilla topped with guacamole. The puffy tacos were a little bit different than I am used to since they didn't have the bend in the center of the shell, but they were good nonetheless. I only had one small bite of the enchiladas and puffy tortilla with guacamole, and they were both good. My 13 year old wiped out the queso puff before I could try it, but said it was "so delicious." read more

This was the best Tex-mex I have ever had! I got the picadillo enchiladas and the chorizo fundidio. Such delicious cheesy, meaty, gooey goodness. Omg. I licked my plate. Really, I did. The food, the service, the atmosphere; truly exceptional! ¡Muy Rico! If you just want the nitty gritty, skip down to the bottom for my pros and cons list. Otherwise, keep reading. I will begin by saying I don't normally care for TexMex. To me, Americanized Mexican food is Americanized Mexican food. BUT, El Felix has very authentic flavor with some creative Texan twists. Any time I've walked in, it's packed. The wait can be long, so It's not ideal for those on a tight schedule but it's definitely worth it if you can spare the minutes. Both the service and prices are a little more upscale than what you would expect from trendy a TexMex restaurant. Many of the menu items are about what you would pay at Outback, but they can go up from there (although the flavors are much more original and delicious than what you might find at the old chain steakhouse). The service is better too! "Hmm.. my drink looks like it might almost be about to run a little low- Oh wait- they're refilling it already!" Their service is phenomenal. It's as though they have a team of people waiting on you. One girl consistently came by to refresh our drinks from her carafe of water, while our waiter came to take our order and check on us frequently (but not so frequent that it was intrusive). All of this, despite the restaurant being packed. Our waiter's name was Avery. He was attentive and impressively knowledgeable. Not just in listing and recommending great choices, but in the history and heritage of the restaurant, the ingredients in all of the dishes we inquired about, how the food was prepared, and of course, providing excellent recommendations based on your tastes; unlike the waiters at outback who seemingly provide recommendations off of a cue card filled with whatever new promotions the restaurant was pushing that week (I swear I don't hate Outback). The food! ONG the food. Starting with the chips; unlike the thin scabs some places serve you, these are thick cut. Rightly so, because they need to shovel their absolutely delicious chili queso into your mouth that a weaker chip would crumble under. I'm Mexican, so when I go somewhere, I don't just want a standard quesadilla that you can find at Taco Bell. I want something authentic. In my experience, I only see what I typically order at authentic Mexican restaurants (no, it's not anything like lengua or cabeza). They are tacos al pastor. The ones I ordered here were some of the best I've had. The pork was tender yet ever so slightly crispy on the edges to provide a satisfying hint of crunch to the texture. The pineapple was not overpowering and was grilled perfectly; not too much where it can get dry and sour. I also tried their horchata which was delicious, which left me sad because it was not refillable and I am too cheap to get a second one (they also make one with rum, which I suspect would be delicious as well). All in all, this is a place that I will be taking all of my out-of-town guests (Especially my family and old friends from SoCal where the bar for Mexican food is set very high). _______________________________________ PROS: --------- Casual yet upscale environment that is perfect for nearly any occasion DELICIOUS, authentic Mexican flavors with a hint of a Texan twist. El Felix is fantastic! I was visiting from Seattle over the weekend, and stopped by for lunch on a Saturday. The food is delicious! Ordered soups, steak tacos, and guac. The tacos are AMAZING. The steak was cooked to medium rare perfection and had lots of flavor. They also serve rice and beans on the side, which was a lot tastier than at other Mexican restaurants. The service was a bit slow but other than that, no complaints. Overall I was highly satisfied and will definitely be returning! read more

The catfish was fresh and perfectly cooked and nicely presented with savory Mexican butter. The cheesy beans were a nice change from what you usually get, but the tortillas were just incredible, some of the best I've ever had. If you like it hot ask for the habenero fire salsa. I was pleasantly surprised by this restaurant. I went for a business lunch and the person I met was an old hand there. We got there at 11:30 they immediately sat us outside at our request. The Waiter I believe Grant knew my companions order before he spoke a word and took great care of us. This young man knows how to take care of you.. Service: Grant I believe is his name, but he & his coworkers worked well together as a team. Although the restaurant was super busy & we were warned that our food may take a while, we still got our food in a timely manner. We never needed to ask for anything, because our server kept drinks & chips filled. We even had to turn him down a couple times because he kept refilling things! He kept a close eye on us without being too overbearing. I had ice water with lime , my friend had a tea and they kept our glasses filled to the rim.. Food: Chips & 2 different types of dip were served right after we got our drinks. One was a salsa & the other was an avocado/cilantro salsa. I had the Steak Tacos Al Carbon & my husband had the Pescado Al Carbon. Now, extremely good service is hard to find these days, but extremely good service + perfectly cooked food in 1 place? It's like the 8th wonder of the world. My juicy steak was cooked to a perfect temperature with cooked onions & a crispy flour tortilla wrapped around them. 3 of those in an order with salsa verde & a lime on the side. My husband's fish was beautifully blackened & topped with some colorful garnishes (he ate them before I was able to figure out what they were.. in their uploaded picture, it looks like radish & cilantro). The sauce on the side was a Mexican butter sauce that paired well with the fish. His dish came with 3-4 warm flour tortillas for you to wrap your own fish tacos. Many things on the menu sounded delicious, so I will definitely come back again to try the other things. Our waiter was really nice, he answered all the questions we had patiently. The chips and salsa were so good we couldn't stop eating them! I ordered the veggie enchilada with potatoes and corn inside among other things. The dish was nicely flavored and the cheese was a nice touch: not too heavy but still adds volume to the dish. The best part with the rice and beans!
