Came into town and found this gem which was a 2 minute walk from our hotel. Had it twice on our visit. Burgers were delicious both times we were there. Great menu selection, and a decent beer selection as well. Both times we were a on a little bit of a time crunch so we didn't get to sit and eat. We ordered the Big & Beautiful Belgian Waffle Burger with Fries. Let me tell you, it was not big, beautiful or sandwiched between a Belgian waffle. The waffles that sandwiched our tiny patty together looked like they were Eggo Waffles! The restaurant has a neat condiment bar where you can dress your burger on the side with an extensive amount of options. Ambiance: This place has a hipster/sports-bar vibe, we were into it. It wasn't that busy when we went so we were able to seat ourselves. Service: The hostess was really nice and answered all of our questions about the menu, the General Manager was another story. He was super short with us when we asked to upgrade from regular fries to garlic fries. Then when we told him that the burger that was brought to our table didn't match the menu description or the burgers that we had seen on yelp he rudely insisted that it was the same. We then offered to show him a picture on yelp of what other people had gotten when they ordered the SAME burger and he said that this is what the burger looked like today. This was a good surprise for us. We aimed to go somewhere else but the wait was too long. We decided to walk around Alvarado St and saw Sur Burger. The place itself is super stylish and inviting. So the decision making process to walk in was super easy. They have a menu filled with yummy options to please all sorts of preferences. Just check out the menu and walk up to the register to order. They have beer on tap too, which I totally love. Nothing better than pairing your burger with delicious local draft beer. I had the Sur Cheeseburger and replaced fries for onion rings. Hubby had the All American and my daughter had the kids cheeseburger. Everything was fresh and tasty. My only complaint is that the onion rings were a little soggy. Make sure to check out the condiments bar they have with yummy accessories for your food. I ordered my burger medium well since Sur Burger still thoughtfully asks a customer how they'd like the burger cooked and was pleased to find that I received exactly what I ordered, cooked perfectly. My sweet potato fries were delicious, crisp and not greasy. My order took the time to be completed that real food needs to be freshly prepared. I ordered through an app and arrived for pick up sooner than expected due to light traffic. The hostess did not just tell me to wait, instead she confirmed my order and selection of options and then very compassionately ushered me to a window seat offering to provide my beverage while I waited. It's places like this that offer actual service in food delivery WHILE providing excellent meals that make a dining experience fine! read more

Let me start off by saying the burgers are good. Thick, juicy, could use a little more salt or msg but overall solid. The fries aren't bad either, similar to McDonald's fries but slightly better. Crispy and light with a pinch of msg. The food came out fairly quick and the prices seem reasonable. $13-15 for a combo. My complaint has to do with the owner. He wasn't friendly, we didn't receive any welcome when we entered, he seemed impatient and fidgety, like he wanted us to hurry up and order. Inside seating was full so we sat outside. It was around 645pm and was getting a little chilly. The space heaters weren't turned on and we weren't that cold to ask them to be turned on. It wasn't until other customers came outside to dine when he decided to come out, check on them and not only turn on the heaters but move the heater beside our table all the way to the other end of the area near the other customers. The space heater near them wasn't working so he moved ours over there. . Mind you, we had our 6 yo with us. If we were cold, I would've asked him to leave the heater near us but we weren't. While he was outside, he didn't bother to check on our table either. In the end, we're disappointed with his choices and poor customer service. Honestly the best burger I have had since moving to Monterey. The menu has a wide selection of burgers, appetizers, desserts, beers, and wines. I follow their Instagram to see what the burger of the day is (@surburgermonterey, NOT @thesurburger, confusing that there are two on there). Hopefully they will start a Facebook page so we can keep up to date on there as well for specials. Highlights: -Asian Nachos, comprised of wontons, a lightly spicy sauce, some green onions, and peanuts. This is one of the best things on the menu that isn't burger related. -They have XXX Vitamin Water as a fountain drink option! It's the perfect alternative to soda and the only reason I get a drink other than water or wine. -Milkshakes with various toppings. Sooo good. -The burger of the day, be it a teriyaki and pineapple and jalapeño burger, or hand-battered sea bass, there is always something new to try. -Grant the bartender is great. I always try to sit at the bar when there is room. He makes great suggestions and is very friendly and professional. I would like to see some local wines added to the wine list soon though as there are a couple of great wine tasting rooms within walking distance. The mushrooms are not overpowering taste wise, which I like. Make sure your ready for a delicious mess as I used like 5 napkins. It's an awesome joint! I was happy to find this on my trip to Monterey. The burgers that I order was tasty and the beer hit the spot. What really stood out to me was the salad bar (not really salad, but I'm not sure what I would call it). I was very excited to try this place and sadly my husband and I were VERY disappointed with the lack of customer service or policy. My husband ordered a burger with a fried egg and cheddar and received the wrong cheese and fried onions. I ordered the Sashimi Tuna Slider and literally received maybe 4oz of tuna on a small roll for $11. (See picture) Now I'm aware it said slider but for $11 it was significantly less food than I thought it would be. Nor was I happy with the taste or quality of the tuna either. There is no way that an item listed as an entree should be that little food and be expected to be dinner. I got up the nerve to say something to the person on the front register who helped ring out order in. I simply explained that I wasn't happy with the meal and wanted to see if I could get another meal instead. I even offered to pay the difference, which was only $1. I didn't even mention my husbands order at this point because he insisted I see about mine first. He was polite but was confused as to what I wanted and was not being very forthcoming. If a customer says they are unhappy with the food then typically a business will be concerned enough to at least offer a replacement meal or a refund if needed. At that point I didn't even want a refund, I just wanted dinner. He finally asked if I would like for him to ask the "manager" or someone of that sort what they could do. He came back and said that I could pay the difference. Apparently he has not understood what I meant though and thought that by paying the difference I was going to pay the entire price of a new meal. Why in the world would I pay for a whole new meal when I'm not eating the meal I got, because I was unhappy with it, andddd I had already spent $40 there?? Besides the fact that the portions and quality for price were awful, the fact that I was completely unhappy with my meal alone should be enough to offer some sort of replacement or something. I asked to verify, so there's nothing else you can do? And he said no there's nothing. I wasn't rude or irate mind you..but at that point I was just upset, and my husband and I wanted to leave. Never mind the fact that my husband never even got the correct order. Because we had spent a good amount of money and it was just a waste. I'm aware the store is new, but customers are the core of your business and it is common practice to ensure that each customer is happy and satisfied with your product. So despite being new there should be policies in place. Your staff should be supported and on the same page with each other. A customer DEFINITELY shouldn't have to leave unhappy with an empty stomach. I want to say the store has potential. I like the toppings bar and the decor is nice.. but my husband and I care too much about where we spend our money to come back again. Without getting their menu, kitchen, and policies together I'm sure others will feel the same. read more

I just left and all I can say I left feeling not only offended but disgusted. I left feeling irate. No customer should ever leave feeling irate. 1. Sat at the bar the bartender was all over the place and looked really put out to do his job. 2. My husband was trying to ask if the happy hour option to increase to the 8oz burger and 16oz draft also came with fries. The bartender didn't know and I informed him by reading the menu that it indeed did. 3. So my husband gets the 16oz draft and they deliver a 4oz burger. I ordered the works 8oz burger. So we obviously have a comparison. When I ask about the 4oz burger both the guy that brought out the burger and bartender were completely dismissive and claimed it was an 8oz (this is important). I'll let the picture do the talking. 4. Bartender pushes us to close our tab because he's leaving, so I end up tipping him before the food delivers. Super pissed because he literally deserved 0 dollars!!! 5. After not being able to be dismissed, I talk to the manager and he confirms it is not an 8oz. Asks my husband if he wants the larger burger. He said sure and he put the order in. Not once, asked how we wanted the meat cooked. 6. Then he goes to talk to the bartender. He then comes back out gives us the remake and asks us to tell him what we ordered and proceeds to tell us "he got a different story"! Really a different story, when the bartender originally tried to dismiss me and say it was an 8oz?!? So what is it and who's lying!?! Are you serious, I just told you verbatim what went down. A 16oz drink is sitting in front of my husband and your going to accuse us of lying. This is completely unacceptable, and someone needs to be trained up properly on how to manage. 7. My husband has line of sight to the kitchen. Watching someone eating in the back and then that same someone brings our food out. Wash your hands!!! I couldn't finish my food. My husband didn't finish his food and didn't even touch the second burger brought out. Nor did he finish his beer, at that point we wanted to get the hell out of there. We've always loved the service in Carmel, but this is completely unacceptable. If you care about your customers service experience, a gift card for that matter should have been offered. First time going to this place I absolutely loved the place. The atmosphere is very casual, the order taker was super friendly and went through the menu with my family and I. I personally enjoyed my Sur Cheeseburger and fries, it was a traditional burger which is all I ever want from a burger place. My burger was PERFECTLY cooked and seasoned which I was very surprised by. My nephews enjoyed some fish and chips that looked pretty good, while my brothers enjoyed their chicken sandwich. My only con would be that the toppings section in the back was a little messy and could've been a little cleaner, but that is all. Definitely recommend if you happen to be near the area, located downtown which I'm happy to say they have definitely upped the game for food options in downtown Alvarado. read more

Okay, drop those important plans of yours and get down here--this burger is not to be missed! I had the cheeseburger with white cheddar and got the avocado upgrade. So worth the extra buck for all the fresh slices of avocado on this GIANT burger. My wife would've thought the burger was too pink (more medium rare) but I thought it was perfect. Trust the chef on this one is my recommendation. Totally impressed with the amazing toppings and sauces available for no extra charge. You MUST try the onion marmalade! Garlic, pickles, jalapeños, onions, etc. etc. The fries are legit. Almost like a beer-battered crust on them. Next level fries. Got the Oreo shake to go. Wow. Came here around 6PM on a Friday and it was pretty packed! You order first, then find a table, but I was able to snag two seats at the bar for full service. What's good: -The Works Burger was really good! Thick bacon, avocado. -Onion rings were amazing. Nice and crispy. -Garlic fries were EVEN BETTER than onion rings. Great batter and great fresh garlic. -The condiment bar was crazy! BBQ sauce and hot ketchup were out of this world. -All the ingredients were super fresh. Literally I saw the peppers and produce for the burgers and condiments sitting out in the open in their hallway. -The garlic mash/paste was AWESOME. What can be improved: -Maybe a better seating/ordering system. The cashier advised us to wait for an open seat(or sit outside) before ordering from her. This was a good call. I've been here only a few times but the servers are observant enough to recognize me and know my regular order. Their fries and wings are also amazing and go well with bbq sauce. The place is very spacious and clean- I've seen a lot of restaurants that aren't tidy but this place has a welcoming atmosphere. It is also located on Alvarado Street so it's a great place to get a quick bite before the Farmer's Market on Tuesdays or when you're on your way to Fisherman's Wharf. I've been to this very solid burger joint in downtown Monterey at least three times. The interior seems unnecessarily dark to me, but if you want a little light you can usually grab a seat at small counter along the front window. Great people-watching. They have beer, wine and a little bar/counter. Last visit I got the 1/4 lb. bacon burger by itself (no fries) for $11.98. Yeah not cheap, but considering the downtown location I think it's a fair value. It's not exactly super-gourmet, but the quality is noticeably better than fast food. When you consider that Carl's Jr. is now charging nearly $11 for a disgusting fast food burger, this place seems reasonable. I ordered plain buffalo wings as an app. ($8.98). Kinda steep for six wing pieces, especially considering how small they were. But the taste and quality was great, as were the dipping sauces (ranch and a fairly spicy "Phoenix sauce). read more
