8.9/10 Ordered the Works Burger, Copeland Mushroom Burger, and the Grilled Chicken Salad. Overall, the burgers and salad were satisfying, and the restaurant had a great casual burger-joint vibe. Starting with the Works Burger, which was the highlight of the meal. The patty was juicy and well-seasoned, and the combination of avocado, bacon, and sauce added a lot of flavor. Everything worked well together and made the burger feel indulgent. That said, it could have used more mushrooms, and it leaned a bit too heavy on the sauce. The bun was also a little soft, if it had been toasted or slightly charred, it would have held up better to the sauce and added a nice texture and flavor contrast. Next was the Copeland Mushroom Burger. This one had a juicy patty topped with mushrooms and grilled onions. The amount of mushrooms was good, and the cheese paired really nicely with the toppings. The grilled onions were a nice touch and didn't overpower the burger at all. While it was solid and enjoyable, it didn't feel particularly unique, more like a burger you could recreate at home. Similar to the Works Burger, it was a bit too saucy and could have benefited from a toasted or charred bun for more structure and flavor. The Grilled Chicken Salad was excellent. It came with generous portions of grilled chicken and bacon, plus half an avocado. Everything tasted fresh, and it felt like a healthy, well-balanced option. No complaints here, definitely a great choice if you're looking for a lighter dish. Service was fast and friendly, and the overall atmosphere was nice. It definitely has that classic burger-joint feel. Overall, a solid spot with good food and a good vibe.

Super friendly service, Ly helped us order at the register and she was great. Plenty of seating. Not super clean or dirty, just kind of okay imo. The beer was okay, the hard kombucha was okay. the Sur burger with cheese was meh, the onion rings were good. The salmon burger was good the fries were mid. Overall, it was ok but with all the other options in the area, I'd probably go elsewhere.

Ordered a 6pc wing combo, which should come with 2 sauces; came with none. Also ordered a phoenix sandwich combo, which came with no sauce on either bun. Coleslaw on my sandwich was soggy and mushy. Cold, dried out food, very disappointed.

Located in Old Monterey. I ordered the Number One with raw onions. The burger was fresh and flavorful, with a juicy patty cooked just right. The cheese was melted perfectly and the raw onions gave it a crisp bite that balanced out the richness of the beef. The bun was soft but held everything together without getting messy. It had that classic diner-style taste but with a little extra attention to freshness. Service was quick and the staff was friendly. The spot itself has a casual, relaxed feel, good for a quick lunch or an easy dinner. Portion size was filling without being over the top. Solid burger spot in Monterey. Highly recommend.

I was able to walk to this restaurant from my hotel. I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich as it seemed like the lightest option. The food arrived fresh and hot, but lacked seasoning so it was bland and the chicken was very dry. They had good service but the fountain drinks had a strange flavor and the beverage station was out of lids, straws and napkins. If I went back again, I would order something different and make sure I had sauces and seasonings to go.

Probably not the perfect time to get a burger during Monterey Car Week but I couldn't pass up on food before bed. I got the big kahuna burger. Now this burger is a common menu item but when I read that it included jalapeño peppers I couldn't pass it up. Not only did the peppers add some flare to the overall flavor of the burger, but there was something uniquely different in this burger than all other kahuna burgers I've had. The wait was over 1/2hr but fortunately my hotel was directly across the street. The restaurant itself was packed and still room to sit at the bar while I waited for my order. It turns out the it's a family owed business started by Cambodians who moved to the area a very long time ago. So maybe there's some native seasonings they're using but it was delicious and a very big burger. I was good at eating half but finished the whole thing because I was so damn good. Great atmosphere.

We walked in and were seated right away. The restaurant was nice and clean. There was a soda machine and tea machine. The bathroom needed help because there wasn't any toilet paper or seat covers. The food was great! My son had the fried chicken burger which he ate the entire thing! He said it was really good. My daughter ordered the grilled cheese and I like how it was on wheat bread. She really liked the fries too. I had a cheeseburger but protein style, so no bread just lettuce wrapped. It was really good. The atmosphere was cool and chill. They had tvs on the wall, and bills from all over the world that the kids were fascinated with.

Okay I know this is a burger place but I got the salmon salad and it was delicious! Way way better than I expected from a burger place for sure. It was cooked perfectly and had such a good flavor plus it was huge! I also liked that they make some of their own dressings! I got the homemade thousand island and ate all of it.

Great burger place. Had the Sur Classic. Juicy half pound patty smothered in cheese grilled onions, tomatoes, lettuce and sauce.. very tasty. Service is fast and nice casual bar and dinning area with free drink refills.

I came here with a co-worker for lunch during a work trip. We both really enjoyed our burgers. The staff was friendly and the food was made very quickly. The fries were cooked perfectly which was great but they had no salt on them at all. I didn't want to be annoying and ask for salt so I just ate them. Overall I recommend coming here if you're looking for a good burger.

Satisfying giant burgers and fries (also grilled wings which are great!). Multiple proteins available and fries, rings and other sides multiple ways. Order at the stand then wait for your order to arrive at your table. Indoor or outdoor seating is first come first served. Large groups could be difficult to seat. It's not a cheap burger, so patience on them getting it right.

Good variety on the menu. Sur ring of fire ( cod fish sandwich) is good. Avoid the chili cheese dog. It is drowning with cheese and chili sauce. Combo comes with fries and refillable soft drinks. Fries substitute cost extra and it can adds up. Service- Server takes your order, give you cup to fill up your drinks, brought you food and checks.

I'd give this place zero stars if I could. Hubby and I go to Monterey/Carmel often, but this was the first time we visited this establishment and, most def., the last time! We ordered Sur Classic and Copeland Mushroom burgers with with an order of Large fries. Sur Classic supposed to be 1/2 pound meat and Copland 1/4. Both burgers were same size (1/4 pound). I asked for no lettuce and no sauce, but everything else. Order came with lettuce and sauce, but nothing else!!!!??? Same issue with hubby's order. The meat was well undercooked, yet completely dry (oxymoron, I know...but this place did it somehow). Large fries were a joke...we paid $11.00 for ONE order of fries which was slightly LESS than a regular order of fries at In & Out. Would have taken the order back except that it was take out and we were already home at the time. Do yourself a favor and SKIP this place. Overpriced, disgusting, frozen food, that is not cooked properly. Not sure how this place is staying in business. read more

Really great burgers served with a smile and a friendly attitude - I can dig it! I got the classic combo and added bacon. The fries were a little cold but that's part of the deal with takeout. They were yummy once I heated them up. My burger was definitely the star - cooked to perfection with fresh ingredients. You can definitely taste the quality of the meat. Next time I'll ask for more of that sauce cuz it was super yum. I'll be back the next time I'm in town! read more

First off, love the ambiance as you walk in. The photography on the wall and displayed on the monitors . Captures the essence of Big Sue. The decor gives it a warm, modern and casual vibe. It is a very efficient restaurant in that you place your order then find a seat. It wasn't too busy when we went, but I imagine that you wouldn't have to wait too long with this process. The food was phenomenal. I've always been a fan of Billy Kwan's other restaurants and this is no exception- probably his most casual one and the quality did not falter. We had the tempura fried artichoke which had a nice hint of sweetness to the sauce with a great texture to it. The crunch of the tempura and the unique texture of the artichoke made a great combination. The burger I had was cooked well (well as in good. Not temperature. It was probably medium- just how I like my burgers). The buns they use have a sweetness to it which blends in with the savoriness of the burger. They also have a condiment bar with a variety of options you help yourself to. I added some Sur Sauce and roasted garlic spread. Definitely recommend that combo. Will have to come back when I return to the area! read more

We were in town on vacation looking to watch the saints game on a sunday and came across this spot. We saw they had a tv in the window (no indoor seating bc of the pandemic) so we asked them if they could put the game on for us which they were happy to. The outdoor seating area is right on the sidewalk so a perfect spot to people watch as well. The hospitality was amazing. we talked to every staff member and they were all incredibly friendly. I think the owner was also there working alongside everyone. The beer was great and they had my favorite boochcraft hard kombucha. We had already eaten brunch earlier (wish we had walked by this place sooner) but got some mozarella sticks and they were SO good. Being a vegetarian I was happy to see they had the beyond burger, impossible burger and a house made veggie burger. We'll definitely be back next time were in town! read more

Me: Double burger with over medium egg w ketchup and fries..Queen: single patty Swiss w mushroom and fries. Burger was tasty bun was good lightly grilled, fries were crunchy and super light (picture air fryer shoestring type fries). Also comes w a 20 fountain drink, they give u an empty cup,(costco style), thats cool. Ambiance is cool about 10 tables a small to medium bar with a couple of flat screens, has a cool comfy not outdated vibe. Queen n i ate everything, so thats a testament, not the best burger I've had but quality was satisfactory. Ordered some wings and they were just alright, I like mine extra CRISPY, it renders the chicken fat...anyways would I go here again? Sure why not, but I will still explore other places, so thats why 4 stars, not a definite we coming back, but wouldn't mind if we ended up here another day.... read more

This place is pretty miserable. And this is coming from someone who eats Taco Bell without a problem. The mozzarella sticks were the start of my stomach ache. My friend got the "homemade" veggie burger and she said it seemed like they used a frozen bag of mixed veggies and mixed it in with their patty. I got the bacon burger, ate less than half and my stomach really started to hurt. I don't get an upset stomach easily from food...for real it's pretty bad. This is the first time I felt inclined to write a bad review ever. read more

Late review but better than never. I visited Monterey back in the summer of last year and enjoyed walking thru the little city and stopped here twice during my stay. First time I got the calamari burger. It was sooooo delicious! The night before I left Monterey I ordered some calamari tenders. I was honestly not sure what to expect from the calamari tenders but they were sized perfectly. Whoever thought of both of these entrees is a genius. I would definitely frequent this spot if I lived in Monterey. read more

Don't know how this place got 4 starts.. had a volcano burger. Meat was undercooked, chili was soupy, burger meat was nothing more than what seemed to be a unseasoned Costco frozen burger patty, the chili was flavorless no beans, no meat, no onions.. nothing! And it cost a whopping $24 without the tip. From one die hard foodie.. don't waste your time here. Way better burgers at the chain stores than here read more

This was my 2nd time eating here. The first time the burger was ok but today it was a big mess. It was so wet that I had to use knife and fork to eat it. My husband got the Point Lobos which was a bigger mess than mine. The bbq sauce was just too much and wet. The fries were nothing especial either. I pointed the wetness to the waiter and she accepted the comment graciously. I doubt I'll come back again. Over $39 for two burgers, you expect something more than in-n-out. I'd rather go there next. read more

This has been a family favorite of ours during Covid and after. Their online ordering and take out is seamless and comes out perfect everything. The waitstaff is amazing. Consisting mostly of a family from Cambodia, they have been incredibly friendly and wonderful. We started coming here for the burgers and now we come to see the staff. What a lovely little burger joint. We're about to move and I'm sad to leave Sur Burger. read more

Day trip in Monterey with my man and we needed to find somewhere good to eat since we hadn't ate all day... came up on Sur Burger I looked at the reviews and we decided to try. Definitely loved the food! I got chicken wings and they were crispy, loved the fries. My man got a double bacon cheeseburger and he loved it. Got chili fries as well and he really loved them. Would recommend to anyone just looking for a quality meal at a good price. Amazing service, btw. read more

Read the great reviews and decided we were in the mood for a great burger. This was a disappointment. Ordered a burger that was supposed to have an onion ring and no comment about the fact they were out of onion rings till I tried to order a side of onion rings. Asked what the onion marmalade was, she didn't know. Heard her tell my friend they had fountain soda, so when it was my turn to order asked if they had Coke Zero, she said yes, I think so. They didn't!! Burger was just ok, nothing great for sure. Won't go back here. read more

I have not been here in awhile, probably pre-covid. Then we went in and sat at the bar. We were given a menu and place a drink order. Older guy took our order. Long time ago but I remember being happy with the experience. This time we went in and sat at the bar. I found some menus sitting on the side of the count. A guy came over and said you need to order at the register. So I went over and placed our order. Went back and sat down. Everything was then served to us as it was ready. The fry's were the skinny ones and a smaller order than normal, I don't care because I do not want a lot. The Hamburger patty seemed really thin and small. They use grilled onions so that added to my disappointment. My wife likes small burgers and grilled onion so she was happy with it. I also ordered a hot dog. The hot dog and bun was really tasty. I would like to know the brand. They have in a combo or just order the dog, I just ordered a hot dog.So when I got it it had nothing except the dog in the bun. I went over to a counter that use to have all kinds of condiments. There was not even ketchup or mustard there. I had to ask for some, because i was not offered any. At my age I am looking for service as much as the food. You could sit at the tables out on the sidewalk or stay in. The inside was like most fast food joints. read more

My husband and I loved this place on Alvarado. After reading about the house made Veggie burger I wanted to give it a try. I get tired of the same old boring frozen veggie patties thrown on a bun with a tomato at other restaurants Sur Burger did not disappoint the Veggie burger was very good no way boring with quinoa, chick peas, brown rice, mushrooms, lentils, avocado I did add cheese and I had it on sourdough. My husband had grilled Baja burger with crispy chicken he also really liked it. The condiment bar was great with lots of options to customize like pickled onions, peppers, pico de gallo, dill & sweet pickles plus special sauces The onion rings were very good. Friendly atmosphere and very clean! We will be back when we are in town read more

Been to Monterey for about 6 months now and this has been our go to burger place. Parking is usually hit or miss but we don't mind the walk. We typically get the garlic fries with classic cheeseburger or the PT Lobos and it comes with a free refill drinks, which we always pair with sweet tea. Great friendly staff that are super friendly and are great about suggesting the menu or answering questions. read more

A fantastic burger, I was in burger heaven eating this. I got the cheeseburger w/ fontina & avocado and fries, and at the condiment bar added sweet pickles, pickled red onions, pepperoncini, their burger sauce, and some ketchup added back at the table. It was SO GOOD. The burger was seasoned perfectly, the bun held up to all the goodies and had the perfect sweetness, softness, yet durability. Truly perfect. The fries were hot and crispy and also very good, but I was very focused on that burger. I tried the coleslaw they had at the condiment bar and that was also amazing, with little golden raisins and pineapple along with the sauced cabbage. But I want to emphasize the deliciousness of the condiments they offer. They are clearly selected or made in-house for superior quality and taste, and the burger sauce was truly delicious; a little vinegary, a touch of richness, just spot on yum. Sur Burger hands down has the best burgers on Alvarado St in Monterey. They have a great condiment bar with some of the best coleslaw I've had in a really long time and that says a lot for someone who likes eating out a lot. The burgers are very tasty and a fair price for gourmet burgers. For being a burger shop it has many features that set it apart, from its attentive employees to its amazing condiment bar with a large variety of sauces and toppings to its beautiful decor. If you're on a budget and want to have a great time this really is the place to go. Definitely recommend to anyone and everyone. read more

Used to love this place when it first opened, but recently took my Dad here to celebrate his birthday and we were both still hungry after our meal. The portion sizes were so small, the ingredients were weak, and the burger was very basic. We both agreed to not come back. It's a shame that a burger restaurant can't make a decent burger anymore. We both went to In-N-Out to have a proper burger experience and paid less than what we paid for here. Hopefully things get better. read more
