I've been here only a few times but the servers are observant enough to recognize me and know my regular order. Their fries and wings are also amazing and go well with bbq sauce. The place is very spacious and clean- I've seen a lot of restaurants that aren't tidy but this place has a welcoming atmosphere. It is also located on Alvarado Street so it's a great place to get a quick bite before the Farmer's Market on Tuesdays or when you're on your way to Fisherman's Wharf. I've been to this very solid burger joint in downtown Monterey at least three times. The interior seems unnecessarily dark to me, but if you want a little light you can usually grab a seat at small counter along the front window. Great people-watching. They have beer, wine and a little bar/counter. Last visit I got the 1/4 lb. bacon burger by itself (no fries) for $11.98. Yeah not cheap, but considering the downtown location I think it's a fair value. It's not exactly super-gourmet, but the quality is noticeably better than fast food. When you consider that Carl's Jr. is now charging nearly $11 for a disgusting fast food burger, this place seems reasonable. I ordered plain buffalo wings as an app. ($8.98). Kinda steep for six wing pieces, especially considering how small they were. But the taste and quality was great, as were the dipping sauces (ranch and a fairly spicy "Phoenix sauce). read more

Really great burgers served with a smile and a friendly attitude - I can dig it! I got the classic combo and added bacon. The fries were a little cold but that's part of the deal with takeout. First off, love the ambiance as you walk in. The photography on the wall and displayed on the monitors . Captures the essence of Big Sue. The decor gives it a warm, modern and casual vibe. It is a very efficient restaurant in that you place your order then find a seat. It wasn't too busy when we went, but I imagine that you wouldn't have to wait too long with this process. The food was phenomenal. I've always been a fan of Billy Kwan's other restaurants and this is no exception- probably his most casual one and the quality did not falter. We had the tempura fried artichoke which had a nice hint of sweetness to the sauce with a great texture to it. The crunch of the tempura and the unique texture of the artichoke made a great combination. The burger I had was cooked well (well as in good. Not temperature. It was probably medium- just how I like my burgers). The buns they use have a sweetness to it which blends in with the savoriness of the burger. They also have a condiment bar with a variety of options you help yourself to. I added some Sur Sauce and roasted garlic spread. Definitely recommend that combo. I'd give this place zero stars if I could. Hubby and I go to Monterey/Carmel often, but this was the first time we visited this establishment and, most def., the last time! We ordered Sur Classic and Copeland Mushroom burgers with with an order of Large fries. Sur Classic supposed to be 1/2 pound meat and Copland 1/4. Both burgers were same size (1/4 pound). I asked for no lettuce and no sauce, but everything else. Order came with lettuce and sauce, but nothing else!!!!??? Same issue with hubby's order. The meat was well undercooked, yet completely dry (oxymoron, I know...but this place did it somehow). Large fries were a joke...we paid $11.00 for ONE order of fries which was slightly LESS than a regular order of fries at In & Out. Would have taken the order back except that it was take out and we were already home at the time. Do yourself a favor and SKIP this place. Overpriced, disgusting, frozen food, that is not cooked properly. Not sure how this place is staying in business. read more

We were in town on vacation looking to watch the saints game on a sunday and came across this spot. We saw they had a tv in the window (no indoor seating bc of the pandemic) so we asked them if they could put the game on for us which they were happy to. The outdoor seating area is right on the sidewalk so a perfect spot to people watch as well. The hospitality was amazing. we talked to every staff member and they were all incredibly friendly. I think the owner was also there working alongside everyone. The beer was great and they had my favorite boochcraft hard kombucha. We had already eaten brunch earlier (wish we had walked by this place sooner) but got some mozarella sticks and they were SO good. Being a vegetarian I was happy to see they had the beyond burger, impossible burger and a house made veggie burger. We'll definitely be back next time were in town! read more

Also comes w a 20 fountain drink, they give u an empty cup,(costco style), thats cool. Ambiance is cool about 10 tables a small to medium bar with a couple of flat screens, has a cool comfy not outdated vibe. Queen n i ate everything, so thats a testament, not the best burger I've had but quality was satisfactory. Ordered some wings and they were just alright, I like mine extra CRISPY, it renders the chicken fat...anyways would I go here again? Late review but better than never. I visited Monterey back in the summer of last year and enjoyed walking thru the little city and stopped here twice during my stay. First time I got the calamari burger. It was sooooo delicious! The night before I left Monterey I ordered some calamari tenders. I was honestly not sure what to expect from the calamari tenders but they were sized perfectly. Whoever thought of both of these entrees is a genius. This place is pretty miserable. And this is coming from someone who eats Taco Bell without a problem. The mozzarella sticks were the start of my stomach ache. My friend got the "homemade" veggie burger and she said it seemed like they used a frozen bag of mixed veggies and mixed it in with their patty. I got the bacon burger, ate less than half and my stomach really started to hurt. I don't get an upset stomach easily from food...for real it's pretty bad. This was my 2nd time eating here. The first time the burger was ok but today it was a big mess. It was so wet that I had to use knife and fork to eat it. My husband got the Point Lobos which was a bigger mess than mine. The bbq sauce was just too much and wet. The fries were nothing especial either. Ordered a burger that was supposed to have an onion ring and no comment about the fact they were out of onion rings till I tried to order a side of onion rings. My husband and I loved this place on Alvarado. After reading about the house made Veggie burger I wanted to give it a try. I get tired of the same old boring frozen veggie patties thrown on a bun with a tomato at other restaurants Sur Burger did not disappoint the Veggie burger was very good no way boring with quinoa, chick peas, brown rice, mushrooms, lentils, avocado I did add cheese and I had it on sourdough. My husband had grilled Baja burger with crispy chicken he also really liked it. The condiment bar was great with lots of options to customize like pickled onions, peppers, pico de gallo, dill & sweet pickles plus special sauces The onion rings were very good. I have not been here in awhile, probably pre-covid. Then we went in and sat at the bar. We were given a menu and place a drink order. Older guy took our order. Long time ago but I remember being happy with the experience. This time we went in and sat at the bar. I found some menus sitting on the side of the count. A guy came over and said you need to order at the register. So I went over and placed our order. Went back and sat down. Everything was then served to us as it was ready. The fry's were the skinny ones and a smaller order than normal, I don't care because I do not want a lot. The Hamburger patty seemed really thin and small. They use grilled onions so that added to my disappointment. My wife likes small burgers and grilled onion so she was happy with it. I also ordered a hot dog. The hot dog and bun was really tasty. I would like to know the brand. They have in a combo or just order the dog, I just ordered a hot dog.So when I got it it had nothing except the dog in the bun. I went over to a counter that use to have all kinds of condiments. There was not even ketchup or mustard there. I had to ask for some, because i was not offered any. At my age I am looking for service as much as the food. You could sit at the tables out on the sidewalk or stay in. The inside was like most fast food joints. read more
