Came here post race (Monterey Bay Half) and had a delicious burger that hit the spot. Burger was juicy and the toppings and sauce was delicious. It did take about 45 min for the food to come out but that's because it was packed post race and so completely understandable that they were backed up. After a morning at the aquarium we wanted to get away from Cannery Row, and Sur Burger was a great choice. We sat outside, but ordered inside. The staff was incredibly friendly, helped with menu questions, and was just generally awesome. We got kids chicken fingers and grilled cheese, and two double cheeseburgers. The chicken fingers were beautiful: lightly battered, perfectly fried, and only white meat. The grilled cheese was not too crispy (super clutch with our picky 7 y/o), and served on wheat bread (plus for parents). Their burgers are awesome, hot, and literally dripping with cheese. Our 9 y/o barely finished hers, which is saying something: they aren't small. Their fries were super freshly fried, and delicious. The food was great! We got the PT. Lobos burgers with garlic fries and the bacon was nice and crispy. The service was good, you get your own drinks and things so no real need for service in that aspect. The only complaint I have is the amount of gnats flying around. I had to keep covering my drink in fear of them going in and the majority of my time I was swatting them away. I probably won't come back because of that. If I can see them all out here I wonder what the kitchen may look like with them. read more

The restaurant dining was nice, bar had 6 stools, and 2 TVs. I ordered the Sur Ring of Fire combo which included a spicy coleslaw fish sandwich, fries, and a fountain soda. The fries were mid with no real flavor. The sandwich was not very impressive flavor wise. It was almost too spicy to enjoy. Would have been a half star better if the bun was toasted. The 3 stars is for their fried calamari. When it arrives, we thought that the waiter brought mozzarella sticks accidentally. I've never seen calamari strips and they tasted like imitation crab. Overall I'd give it a "MID+". The place was clean and the food was average. A couple things I feel could be improved upon: The server didn't ask us how we wanted our burgers cooked (ie well, medium, rare etc..). This is a critical error IMO. The meet was good quality but when you like medium/medium rare and it comes well that's a major bummer. The server also didn't mention that cheese, tomato, and grilled onion had to be requested on the "pt. Lobos burger. For the fountain drinks they give you cheap plastic cups that remind me of a 90's pizza parlor. The regular fries, garlic fries, and sweet potato fries were all great! The toppings on the burgers and buns were also really good. I also like the fact that fries and drink is included in the price. I didn't order beer or wine but the bar also looked nice. In summary: dry service with no menu help/explinations, over cooked burgers, decent prices, nice inside/bar, good fries. Worth a second chance. read more

Third visit to Sur Burger. They do not disappoint. The fish & chips (Sur Brighton) is simply amazing. Perfectly cooked fish paired with the crispiest chips. We had fish and chips up the street, and it does NOT compare. Yes it's a burger joint. But I'm blown away by their seafood dishes. This time around we got their fried calamari. I have never been more excited to write a yelp review. Husband and I both ordered The Works and shared a large chili con carne fries. Too much food but OMG! I got SUR sauce and my husband got the Phoenix sauce. Phoenix sauce is like a spicy thousand island, and very good!! I can't think of a better burger I have eaten. I don't understand what these reviewers are seeing. Did this place change ownership recently? I don't want to be a hater, but if you think this is the best burger you've ever had, you need to go eat some more burgers. We ended up here on a Thursday night because it was literally the only restaurant on Alvarado Street that didn't have a wait. That's usually a terrible sign, but we were with both kids and just needed to feed them. The seating area is large but it's actually a fast casual, since you order and pay at the counter and find your own seat. I never like these type of places because I'm not sure how much to tip, and at least one other customer left confused after standing around without being greeted. My wife ordered the Sur Cheeseburger while I went with the Spicy Southern Fried Chicken Burger. I was expecting some type of crispy Nashville-style spicy chicken sandwich from the description, but there was absolutely nothing southern or spicy about this sandwich. It was basically a chicken breast fried in tempura batter and doused with Frank's Red Hot Buffalo Sauce. It was soggy on arrival and not good. My wife's cheeseburger fared slightly better, but the patty was not very juicy or tender or particularly flavorful. It was exactly average. The only positive thing about this place is the condiment bar, where you can load up on toppings and sauces to customize your meal. But honestly, there are no amount of condiments that can turn a mediocre burger into a good one. Maybe there just aren't many good burger places in Monterey, but when I'm paying nearly $60 for a meal, I expect it to taste better than what I can make on my own. Just looking for a snack before getting our room at the Monterey Marriott, and stumbled along Sur Burger, with an A-frame sign that said: WANTED: Customers. Cleaver! We went in and split a SUR Phoenix chicken sandwich. They aren't kidding the slaw is hot! But also sweet and crunchy, served on a soft Kaiser-roll type bun. Forgot to ask for grilled chicken Vs fried, but the batter was light and the chicken was tender and juicy. Nice stumble for us! Oh, and they serve Veuve Clicquor By the bottle and only $85 a bottle! My husband and I stopped in to watch the World Series. We ordered chicken wings and fries as well as calamari. The chicken wings were oversized, crispy and delicious! We asked for buffalo sauce. I also attempted the Phoenix sauce. It was spicy as they said it was. The calamari was fresh and crispy with a sweet lightly spicy chili sauce. Honestly, the best calamari I've had in quite a while. We were looking for a premium burger in Monterey, and found SUR Burger on Yelp. They had many positive reviews, and it was just what we were looking for. Yelp came through again! We ventured downtown to the establishment which is on the quaint & energetic Alvarado St. Upon entering the restaurant, everything looked very clean & modern. The atmosphere inside is very pleasing & comfortable with large photographic images of ocean scenes, and brown wood throughout. Indie music was playing that most people would enjoy. The dining inside includes a booth-lined wall with tables & seating at the bar. There is also seating on the front outside patio. All looked inviting. The menu is large and varied. We noticed their "Signature Cheeseburger & Fries" on the menu. The burger is 1/2 pound of fresh, all natural, 100% Chuck, no hormones, no antibiotics, vegetarian fed beef. It is served on their SUBU bun. The cheese choices are: white cheddar, American, Swiss, blue cheese or warm queso. The description sounded perfect, so we ordered one and added avocado, along with a single "Just The Cheeseburger". The food was brought out relatively quickly and sizzling hot. Both burgers were succulent, moist & juicy, and had an excellent flavor. The crispy lettuce and flavorful tomato came on the side. The flavorful coated french fries were perfectly done, crisp on the outside and soft inside. At the SUBU condiment bar, there are sweet pickles, dill pickles, olives, pickled cabbage, peppercinis, pickled vegetable mix & creamy coleslaw.
