Food and service were great! Great ordering system and proper portion size. At first I thought it looked small, but it was an ideal way to eat and still able to order more things to try. I love being able to grab my own banchan and sauces. Our server, "Kai", was very attentive and helpful to my family and I. He constantly picked up our plates and trash and always checked on our table. :) The butcher cuts and kitchen food selections were quite fresh and well kept! Most of the time, the shrimps at most restaurants are spoiled without them knowing, but these shrimps were great! One of my favorite K-BBQ places on island! Once you find a good parking spot, the rest of your night it gonna be Golden! I've come here as a date night with my husband, family dinner, and even with my newborn. This place has never let me down. I love that it's AYCE and the service is top notch. It looks small and cramped from the outside, but I had enough room in the inside for our party of 10 and my stroller! I was also able to rock my baby to sleep while standing and eating. And yes, he did fall asleep in the restaurant and stayed mostly asleep. Something that's very interesting is the corn and Mac and cheese side - you don't see that anywhere else. Of course, they do have the classic banchans, but those really influence my decision when I think of where I wanna go to eat. I do like that soups and bibimbap are included in the AYCE price, because in other AYCE KBBQ spots in the area, those items are additional charge. The mac & cheese w corn; and corn & cheese sides on the grill are unique to this AYCE BBQ spot too. SERVICE -- What I like best about this place is their late-night hours, which is open until 2am. Though, their wait time is super long, which is around 30 minutes every time. Reserve your seat ahead of time online to avoid the hassle. Service is decent. Quick to serve meat orders. Recently, they introduced a system in which sides and sauces are now self-serve. I found it a bit chaotic for my liking because it could get crowded really easily, and that you may have to make multiple trips to be able to hold all of your sides and sauces, if you are taking some for the rest of your table. AMBIANCE -- The ambiance is a bit dark, which can be difficult to cook and look around if you don't have perfect vision. Less smokey than other places. Last minute reservation since our original restaurant had water outage. Luckily they could squeeze us 10 in. 7 adults, 2 toddlers, 1 baby. Odd that the kids can't sit on the ends of the table...further away from the grill. They need to be put in the middle...we were told that's policy. The Mac and cheese, corn, and egg cooks in the ring on the side of the meat and always comes out tasting good. Everything is good, except the service. Awful service, every time it seems to get worse. They're rude, they rush, they really don't care at all about anyone being there. Last time I went, I was there after my party and when I asked the host where they were he told me I could walk around to find them. This restaurant has two sides. I got a soju slushy and it came back as just a regular drink the guy who brought it said they ran out. Ran out of what?? My friends ordered soup and they brought them no spoons, the food was almost cold by the time they finally came back with a spoon. They keep coming by asking about ordering more meat which is good that they don't disappear but this might be the worst service I've seen on this island. For starters only four side dishes to complement the meal and the kimchi was a day old and thus super spicy. There should be at least a dozen side dishes plus glass noodles(cheop japchae). The rice was either old or not fully cooked and semi-hard. The leaf lettuce was semi-wilted. The meat selection was adequate but should include teriyaki marinated as well. The beef was not sliced and semi-grounded and of average quality. The new tablet ordering system needs to have the bugs worked out as the screen would go faded. We only were able to get 2 orders within our 90 minute allotted time. When I came before, we got about 4 orders in. Brisket was very fatty, regular pork belly was ok, and other meats (bulgogi, beef, and spicy thin poke belly) we tried were not good. They also ran out of the thin sliced pork belly. The fatty brisket and regular pork belly was the best thing we got. Food quality used to be good, but we noticed a decline in quality this night. The waiter was also not attentive with our table and we had to flag him down to fill up our waters twice. As soon as 11:17pm hit, the waiter turned off our grill despite us being seated late and only getting 2 orders in. Not worth the $80 TOTAL for 2 people (20% tip included). We went to Sura for my birthday dinner. I've always seen this place when I was younger and there was always a line out the door. There's not much parking around Sura but when called when we arrived there and they told us to park right in front. Not gonna lie, I was a little shocked when I walked into Sura. There were seven of us and they sat us at a table for ten. With the seven of us, they gave us two grills. The grill already had something in it on the edges. I was unsure what it was but it was cooking in there. I scooped out a bit and it was macaroni and cheese. I thought that was kind of interesting. They also had corn in there. Sura is all you can eat but they have strict rules. It says on their menu that if you don't eat all, you will be charged $100 a person. We were a little confused with the ordering part but after many questions we understood. Well, most of us anyways.. I had to redo my parent's order. So on their menu there are two categories: meat and specialties. You choose three meats from the meat category and you can also choose three specialties. Specialties include things like bibimbap, salad, French fries, etc. For our first order we got the kalbi, pork, and bulgogi. For the specialties, we offered two shrimp bibimbap and Kim chee. I'm not much of a meat person but my favorite by far was the bulgogi meat. It was flavorful and we kept ordering it. I didn't really care much for the bibimbap. I guess I was expecting it to be more full of vegetables and instead it just tasted like shrimp rice. Later I also ordered a salad because I felt like they didn't have enough vegetables. I've always been a fan of Korean BBQ, but it's been years since we have gone. This was a neat place about a 15 minute walk from the Hale Koa in Waikiki. We made a reservation for 6 at 6:00pm, got there about 30 minutes early and they sat us right away. The setup of the tables was very cool, each table had their own vent, reminded me of something from a steam punk art style. Instantly the service began. We had food and drinks immediately, and shortly after we ordered the food was coming out. Our favorite was the beef bulgogi and egg side. The tofu kimchi was also very good. This was a very disappointing experience, especially because Sura Hawaii used to be a place we returned to every time we visited Oahu--about three times over the past five years. Unfortunately, this visit was a complete letdown. We invited family visiting from Korea to meet us in Waikiki, and they were genuinely excited to try Korean BBQ in the U.S. I was honestly embarrassed by the experience. First, I want to acknowledge that the staff was clearly doing the best they could. They seemed very short-staffed and overwhelmed, and the issues appeared to be more operational than personal. That said, the service and food timing were extremely problematic. Food was amazingly slow. There were long stretches where we had nothing to eat at all. Kitchen items took about an hour and a half to arrive--so long that we essentially ate them as dessert. To make things worse, they ran out of egg soufflé and kalbi, even though our reservation was at 6:00 PM. The banchan selection was minimal--just kimchi, lettuce, and cucumber--with a sauce station on the side. You're allowed to order three meats at a time, but it took forever for anything to come out. The restaurant uses a new tablet ordering system, which we were told to use, but it either wasn't working or wasn't being monitored. After waiting endlessly, we had to flag down staff to place orders, which were often forgotten. Only after we complained did someone mention, "Oh, the tablet might not be working." The room was also very smoky, and there were crowds of people waiting outside. It seemed like tables weren't turning because diners were stuck waiting for food that just wasn't coming. Overall, the food quality wasn't great, the service was painfully slow, and the experience was frustrating from start to finish. This was not the Sura we remembered, and unfortunately not a place I would recommend right now--especially if you're hosting out-of-town guests or introducing someone to Korean BBQ for the first time. I truly hope they can get staffing, kitchen flow, and their ordering system sorted out, because this was a major disappointment. read more
