The pier at Surf City offers way more than just amazing ocean and shore views. The 937 feet pier hosts hunderds of avid fisherman each day. For only $1, I was able to walk the pier and watch several fish being pulled from the ocean. The complex consists of a bait/fishing shop, gift shop and small grill serving breakfast sandwiches and hot dogs and the pier. The staff in the shop are friendly and prices to rent a fishing pole are reasonable, but you need to bring your own gear. It costs only $12 to rent a pole and fish for 24 hours and the pier is open 24/7. I walked out on the pier and was mesmerized watching the people with their poles. I saw a ray and blue pulled in and released. The people were friendly in a Southern charm way. The views from the pier are lovely. I would like to return for sunset photos. The pier has fish cleaning stations and benches to sit. A lot of birds hang out hoping for some fish. Worth a visit if you love the ocean and fishing. read more

I was visiting family for a few days and ventured out to the beach. It was one of those hot and humid days and the best place to be beside an air conditioned place was at the beach. I usually go to Topsail beach which is closer but I was being adventurous. lol. Surf city wasn't that far. I enjoyed the cute little beach town some of the stores and of course the pier. I paid my fee to get in which was $1 or $2 I think. You pay more if you're fishing. The pier was clean with plenty of benches to sit and enjoy the ocean which is what I did. The breeze alone felt amazing and I could've sat out there all day. I watched the surfers doing their thing in the waves. There were people, young and older fishing towards the end of the pier. This is a spot I could return to again and again. read more

This is our second day at the beach which let's start positive we have loved! Great food, nice people! Saturday when we parked on our first day we paid the public parking price that we honestly though was a steal. Then, a older couple who told us they worked for the pier came to our car from their white van sitting in front of the pier and said "if you are fishing at the pier and buying a pass you could have parked for free in our parking". We thanked the woman who was very nice and said thank you for letting us know, no big deal, will remember tomorrow. Fast forward to Sunday, same older couple same white van Woman comes to the truck says are you fishing here? My husband says yes, goes in purchases the pier pass, she gave us the parking pass day two she's still kind and professional. Not 2 mins after she walks away the older male comes over says you can't park here if you aren't fishing. I explain my husband is fishing (he has a separate fishing cart than my beach cart) however being the gentleman my husband is and knowing we have a teenager who has a disability he states I'm going to help her get the cart down to the beach. This man gives us attitude but my husband helps and takes his fishing cart straight to the pier. Fast forward, my husband spends all day at the pier but time to pack his family up and go. Puts his cart up in the truck comes to help me and the same older man says you have to pay for parking if you aren't on the pier? My husband said we are leaving I'm just helping my wife... doesn't matter if you aren't on the pier. So my husband being the nice person he is went and paid for public parking for an hour to help me drag the cart from the beach which took an entire 5 mins. So if you are smart go ahead and pay for that parking which honestly is cheap anyways and enjoy your day. I write all of this because I work in hospitality and this man was as nice as a hemorrhoid. Stop chasing people down literally before they get out of the car to tell them they shouldn't have paid parking only to harass them the 5 mins it takes for them to help their family get the cart from the beach. Again, the public day parking is a steal compared to big cities. This man is not who needs to be in the parking lot. read more

This place is fantastic! I brought my son and know nothing about fishing and they helped every step of the way and what we didn't have, they had and it was very affordable. The people were amazing!!!! From the people who check on the cars, the people at checkout, and the ones working the grill. We ate, we fished, and we met new people and swapped stories. Coolest place. To get on the pier Adults are $1. Little kids are free. To walk way out over the water is neat, and you can see the beach forever. Today, in March, there was a surfing competition. Surfers in wet suits rode the occasional waves. But better yet is to see is what the fishermen catch. We saw baby stingrays, skates, and whiteys. You can watch the people reel them in. I always talk with the fishermen and ladies. They like to show off their catches. Pelicans fly overhead. Blackbirds screech. Birds dip down in the water to catch food. I like being here. read more

I've been fishing the coastal piers of NC for fifty + years and the people you meet share a common interest and typically very friendly. There are the 'regulars' who think they own the place and dont mind telling you they don't want you to fish near them even though the pier rules state I am within my rights as a fishing customer to do so. I liked the facility and staff but just be mindful some people who fish there can be territorial to the point of intimidation. read more

I used to come here a lot when I was a Marine at Camp Lejeune. Its halfway between Jacksonville and Wilmington located on Topsail Island. Typical old school NC beach. More laid back and family friendly than Wilmington. Dont get me wrong, Wilmington is great but sometimes you just wanna chill at the beach and not watch beer bonging (or ponging) college students getting wasted and being ass*oles. Way more room here too as it was a holiday (Memorial weekend) so you could stake out some space and people arent right on top of you. Wilmington was jam packed with so many people you cant barely walk without stepping on someones stuff. Special tip: coming in to town make a left at the main drag instead of a right. Everyone wants to be down near the pier. Parking around there also sucks. Go left and you have several free beach access parking areas with showers a bathrooms. Right gets you the chance to jockey for spots in smaller lots that have from 10-20 spots each. Left gets you 20-50 spot parking and less people. Wanna go to the pier? Walk on the beach. There was a single worker that was actually pleasant, two of them were just not nice to talk to (they were busy but I work in customer service and no matter what I try my best to brighten customers days). We like this pier. The owners are friendly. It cost $1 per person to walk on the pier. The snack bar/grill has really good ice cream. And the bathrooms are clean. Definitely recommend. read more
