Wow! The quality has really dropped off here. The chips were so overcooked they were inedible, lucky there were only about 1/3 the portion you used to get, so I didn't have to throw too much in the trash. We've been coming here for five years now and it is one of our favorite spots. We feel it's at least on par with Seabright Deli and way better than Zoccoli's (we finally went to try Zoccoli's after seeing it ranked highly on the Best of Santa Cruz list for so many years and... it's OK/good but it's not the same caliber in our opinion). We usually go for the Vulcan Mind Melt and hope that they have Fig's Pig (which the super friendly owner recently told us is only rotated in when they decide to make the cole slaw, periodically, to save costs b/c the other sandwiches don't use the cole slaw) or the spicy fish roll which name escapes me but is so good! The only sandwiches we haven't personally cared for enough to order again are the chicken sandwiches, meatball sandwiches, and french dip. Compared to the other sandwiches,they don't have as much flavor--something about the sauce/other stuff: meat ratio not quite at the other sandwiches' level of awesomeness (maybe the chicken is too thick?). We just love this place and we hope people come because they started doing deals on the phone ($5 off $20 order we think) and we're hoping they're not in trouble. I ordered the Johnny Utah (turkey) sandwich on-line. The on-line experience was good. Its user friendly/easy to use. Came here to meet my mom on our lunch breaks. She always told me it was great but looking at it from the outside I was always skeptical trying it out. Glad I did though! This is a great sandwich spot because they have a lot of different options! Including vegetarian and VEGAN. It's usually hard to get a good sandwich that is veggie/vegan but not here! I ended up getting the Mr. Natural without tomato or cheese and with vegan mayo instead of regular. So I made it vegan. This was truly delicious! Everything was really fresh and the vegan mayo was creamy and amazing. I don't think I've had a better veggie sandwich anywhere to be honest. The home made potato chips on the side were yummy too. Came here before heading to the beach on Sunday, no complaints! I ordered a Tiki Tuna. I didn't know what to expect but I did not expect that. I probably wouldn't get it again because I wasn't aware it was a piece of tuna filet (my fault for not reading) and thought it would be a tuna salad-ish sort of sandwich, but it was still good! The filet was a decent size, but I didn't like how it was too thick for the sandwich to hold together well. My sandwich kept falling apart but I still finished it! The best part of the order were the chips. My friend told me that the chips are made in house and I was very impressed. They tasted very well seasoned and crispy! Probably the worst experience I've ever had at a sandwich shop. First off the place appears Clea at first but then after waiting for farrrrr too long for my sandwich I see cock roaches running by. This is disgusting and I am reporting to the health department. Now the sandwich yeah I thought it would be great based on other reviews but the bread was stale and tasted old. The meat was a skimp portion and the turkey was slimey. Asked for mustard and got more mustard than anything else and it was dripping out the side of the crap sandwich but at least the moisture from the mustard was a welcome break from the very stale dry bread. Got the Vulcan and another sandwich. 2 sandwiches with a 15% tip was literally $35. This better be the best sandwich I've ever had and it better be huge... Nope. I couldn't decide and asked the very nice guy behind the counter to give me his recommendation. He told me to get the Nonis Pesto chicken in a tomato wrap. My fiancé got the Bahn mi with chicken. Each Sammie came with house made chips, which were crispy and nice, but could use some more seasoning, maybe salt. The chicken pesto was SO GOOD. It's a go to of mine and this one did not disappoint. Way too expensive for the sandwich that you get. Ordered the Philly cheesesteak sandwich. The sandwich came in a hoagie roll which was only 1/2 filled. Given the size of the bun, either add more meat or get a smaller bun. First impression was disappointing. Overall flavor profile of the sandwich was good however no desire to return given the $15 for the sandwich. I understand they probably have to charge this much given how much it must've cost to build the place and with the cost of minimum wage increase in Santa Cruz. Too bad this will only get them less customers. Sandwich shop is decked out in surf theme which seems very out of place given the location. Born and raised in Santa Cruz, this would be the last place I would think of surfing when I eat. With that being said, they did a good job with the Decour. Highly recommend their veggie sandwiches and the BLT. I absolutely love the doneness and thickness of their house chips. I don't recall them shrinking the portion... I suspect Americans are just used to huge portions. It's definitely a "get what you pay for" meal. I can tell they use quality ingredients and prepare most, of not all, of them fresh daily. So the price may be higher than you average sandwich shop but take into consideration that food costs have gone up exponentially everywhere for everyone. Spending $30 on two sandwiches isn't something I'd be able to do 5 days a week but I never feel like I'm getting "ripped off" where as I would if places like Togos or even Eric's cost as much. Ordered the pork belly banh mi sandwich to go here, I'd say its packed with TONS of flavor & I was pleasantly pleased the pickled carrots were made the way it should for a banh mi sandwich. If you're into spice, this sandwich is a good option! We ordered take out and got our food within 10 minutes! The only thing I would recommend is the pork belly cuts were more fatty than meaty.
