I got a room for $79 out the door, midweek after Labor day. That's darn good for Fort Bragg! I arrived, and the clerk, who I believe was also the owner, was very friendly. He checked me in, and told me where my room was. It is an older motel, but it's obvious that it has been renovated. My room, including the bathroom, was spotless The TV had a good picture. I was worried that my WiFi might not work well, because I was about as far from the office that I could be. I've had that problem before at other older motels, , but it worked great, with speed fast enough to stream video. I did not hear any noise whatsoever, There was,also a desk so I could work on my laptop, plenty of plugs to charge my gear, and even a "charge plate" built into the desk. If your phone is compatible, just lay it on top of the charge plate, and it will charge your phone. The motel has a snack and soda machine near the lobby. (when I was there, it didn't have any diet soda, only water.) It also has a guest laundry available. Breakfast was Hot/cold cereal, fruit, toast, pastries, juice, coffee, and hot chocolate. It was fine for me. If you want something else, there are places from Mickey D's, to Denny's, and on up the line in town. 2 minor details that aren't worth taking off a star. I was going to make a pot of coffee, but when I opened the machine, there were 3 used coffee pouches inside. Please make sure that the machine is cleaned. Also, on the bed, it was just a little firm for my personal taste, but I still got a good night's sleep. I would stay here again without hesitation. Thanks!!! read more

Lovely gardens greet you as you enter the property. This is an older property, but they have updated the rooms. I love the light/reading light/plug/usb ports on each side of the bed and at the desk -- very handy. And they have things that are handy for hotels including refrigerator and small freezer and microwave. They upgraded the bath area as well with granite counter, new fixtures and nice wood framed mirror and also a spacious walk in shower. As mentioned before they have a central garden area with gazebo -- for picnics maybe. The price was reasonable for California. Don't forget to use your AAA card to get bonuses. I got a king bed for the price of a Queen with my AAA card. Breakfast was just coffee, pastries and bananas -- nothing fancy. I did ask for extra towels and pillows and they said ok if I came to get them. That was ok because the office is close to all rooms. I did like that all the rooms are one story, so no stairs. This motel is not bad for what it is. Simple accommodations for a quick little stay. Its a motel so the room was clean but like most motels, the accommodations are noticeably worn. The bathroom was the best remodel of a motel bathroom Iven seen. Someone really put some thought into the bathrooms and they were great. One of the main reasons we stayed here was because they take dogs at a reasonable price. This motel is very dog friendly. They have a perfectly sized little dog park outside to run your dog around. Plenty of open areas to take walks as well. Distance from the wharf area is perfect. Its just a quick drive down the road to food and shops. I would really recommend a stop here for a simple stay. I don't usually leave negative reviews, but these rooms were completely unacceptable. Two words: bed bug. We arrived and were given the wrong room, which is no big deal. After settling in we noticed the smoke detector was not mounted and the battery was low. The shower also looked dirty. The real issue started when I tried going to sleep. My forearm got itchy and I noticed a small bite. Concerned, I looked at the sheets closely and found what appeared to be a bed bug. To make matters worse, I found a bunch of webs under the bed frame. We asked for a new room and the new room had hair in the sheets and a piece of someone's nail. It didn't seem like they washed their sheets at all to be honest. The carpet was sticky and the bathroom had blood on the door frame.... As soon as you pull in. You see piles of junk as if it were someone's front yard. Honestly it looks like a flop house. Nice motel off the highway in Fort Bragg for the right price. If what you need is a room and a shower, then Surf Motel and Gardens is your place. The rooms are clean, and updated, and have plenty of electrical outlets. There are refrigerators and microwaves in each room and all the free shampoo and lotion you could want. I have pretty reasonable (imo) standards for hotels: is the room reasonably clean, is the room reasonably quiet, is the bed reasonably comfy. Note that I say 'reasonably' - I'm not expecting extra plush goose down comfort at a $100 a night hotel. This place was unable to hit any of those 3 standards. The room was stinky and dusty. The TV didn't work. There were napkins and paper plates from previous guests stuffed behind the cabinet The bed was rock hard, had two pathetic little pillows. The night manager issued keys to the same room to two different groups resulting in a little shock and scuffle outside at about 11pm. The smoke alarm started to chirp to announce low batteries at 4am. I tried to speak with the front desk about getting a little refund. I was only expecting something like $20 bucks. I felt that was reasonable for the inconveniences (again, note that word reasonable). Well, only The Manager can help me but he'll 'call me back' it's been two weeks and no call. I followed up and he's now on a long vacation until the New Year. Sure. But seriously, F this place. Please go somewhere else. read more

The quoted price I was given over the phone when I booked the room for two ppl, and two beds was $79.00 plus tax, yet the man at the office charged me $111.87 when I got there. When I told him what the office told me over the phone, he tried to say that the lower price was for one bed. Yet, I specifically said 2 ppl and two beds, traveling with my adult son. This is definitely one of those old school motel. The room was reasonably comfortable, but it definitely needed upgrade. They need to replace the carpet with hard floors. You definitely want a black light to see what kind of mysterious things are living on that carpet. The front desk staff were friendly. However, there is a lot of signing and swearing that you're not going to do stuff. This hotel is obviously accustomed to a much less trustworthy clientele. In the room there is a peculiar little placard where they list the price in case you want to purchase any of the amenities, and I use the word amenities loosely. Obviously an attempt at sarcastic humor, but it's a bit off putting as you are paying over $150 a night to stay in this motel 6 quality establishment. One thing that was missing from the price list was the smoke detector. It was also missing from the ceiling. I guess someone must have considered that to be free since it wasn't listed for sale. As for the furnishings, they are about as low quality as you can get. For example, to dry off an average size 6 ft tall guy, it required all of the Linens. One shower required two towels and two hand towels. As for the towels and hand towels, they were not fresh. When I pulled them from between the little metal clips it was obvious they had been there for a while. The previous guest apparently did not use all of them, so housekeeping just decided to leave them there.. They had somewhat permanent folds and creases from the repeated steam bath provided by previous guests. Were it not for the rude sarcastic price list, missing smoke detector, and old towels this hotel would get a solid 3 points. Their Wi-Fi was okay and the cable TV worked. The bed was satisfactory and the air-conditioning kept the room cool. For that I assign two points. read more

Second the floors were completely soaked can't even put my things on the ground let alone want to ...as I touch the carpet the putrid smell of straight garbage and feces inflames my nostrils eeeuughh!!!!! At this point I'm tired so I take a shower try to enjoy my already amazing trip and not let it get to me. I crawl into bed knowing they probably just tucked in the bedding and never washed it hoping to just get thru the night and not let it get to me...... 4 am rolls along I jump outta bed l as I'm woken up to bed bugs biting me all over over. I know for a fact it was bed bugs because I have a hyper sensitivity to the venom they produce when bitten and my whole arm has huge welts on them for three days now and it feels as if the skin is splitting I'm pissed at this point can't sleep it's 5 am now and I'm at the door ringing the bell asking the host to refund my money he informs me the manager will be in later and he will contact me... Turns out that is the manager and he was lying to me . He tells us on the phone he won't be in for two days then says I'll give you 90 dollars back ... We go to Surf a couple times a year with a Harley group. Called to reserve our room with the special rate quoted $89 never received a confirmation #. I had called 2 days in a row to try and get that emailed and forgot after the second day so no way to prove the quoted price.. I knew to try to get the confirmation they did the same thing to us last time but that room they charged us $189 for. So, when we got there 6 got the $89 rate they charged us $158! One of the other guys paid $125 for a room with a hot tub that they had disabled due to water shortage so why charge more? Add to that the toilet seat was broken, since the toilet not screwed down about 4AM the rocking toilet made the seat give me one heck of a pinch. The hotel is okay not the cleanest and if you like privacy the bathroom doors won't actually close all the way either. Not too pleased with the customer service unless you talk to the girls there, the manager is unfriendly read more

After 25 of years of coming here, my mom is so upset that her fond memories of her time at the Surf Motel and Gardens with her deceased husband were just squashed. The Gardens are overgrown, and most of its dead or dying. The owner(s) and management should be ashamed of how they've let this once super cute motel become a rundown, overpriced wreck. The drains don't drain, the carpet, walls, counters, microwave, lights etc etc were all filthy. Holes in the walls, I could go on and on. Just gross from neglect. And did I mention what they charged??$I was told I'd get a partial refund but haven't heard from anyone. I do not understand how this place revived even 3 stars. I give it one start for sure because of the quiet, even when people were up and moving around. However, I could not wait to leave. There were dead bugs everywhere, including a two inch long millipede on the white bathroom floor. The bathroom tub faucet leaked to much that it was spraying onto the bathroom floor. The pipes under the bathroom sink leaked. There was a dripping sound in the walls we could hear all night. I had a rough time wanting to get into the bed, given the state of the room. The sheets did appear clean, but they were torn in one place, wouldn't stay on the bed in one corner, the top blankets were sun bleached, and the blankets were too thin for the cold night. There were two tables, one of which had a pretty good potential to be cool, but it was backwards against the wall, too big for the space it was in, and no place to sit. We ate our dinner one the bed, as there was no other place to sit. There was torn and extremely worn carpet in nearly every corner of the room. Chipped and worn out dry wall, particularly on corners and lower walls (I'm pretty sure they've hosted soccer tournaments in here). Missing hardware that was not painted over in the supposed recent update. The bathroom faucet was ready to fall off (one wrong move and I thought we'd enjoy a nice waterfall en suite). The blow drier was a bit off, hence the melted plastic around the air outlet (I shudder to thing what that would do to my flesh; think Indiana Jones). Mold, mildew, and red algae could be found anywhere a source of water was located. Useless and rusted out equipment. I know this comes as a surprise, but there is clear water damage on the walls and ceiling and, strangely enough, on the bedside lamp. And my absolute favorite part, having to straddle the toilet to close the bathroom door to get to the tub and shower. Honestly, I could go on, but it took me 2 months to write this because I shuddered to have to relive the experience in order to write this review. Definitely. Will. Not. Be. Back. read more

Where do I even start. If you like disgusting motels, this is the place to be. This was by far the worst motel I have stayed at in Fort Bragg. If I could, I would give it a 0 rating. It was cheaper than several others, so I wasn't expecting it to be the best motel but pictures and decent reviews made me think it was a clean and safe option. This motel failed to meet both cleanliness and safety expectations. When we arrived we first noticed that the trim in the room was dirty and broken/chewed up in several spots. I then noticed globs of hair stuck to the tile in the shower. We also received the wrong room, I booked a queen room and got a double queen instead. Which isn't the worst thing to happen, but it was still not what I booked. After coming back to the room late in the evening from beaches, I checked under the beds. Underneath them I found puzzle pieces, paper trash, a dog bone, a spoon, a Barbie shoe, a straw, and a ROTTING mandarin. It was absolutely disgusting that they don't even have the decency to take the time to clean under the beds. We made a complaint to the front desk the next morning and we were offered a $40 comp and for the room to be cleaned immediately. So we left for the afternoon and came back that night, expecting a clean room. We came back to the beds made and that was about it. Whoever came to clean it decided to leave EVERYTHING under the bed. They pushed out the puzzle piece and ripped paper and left them in the middle of the floor. They pushed the spoon and dog bone further under the bed and left the mandarin. They didn't fix the problem and have yet to refund $40. Them leaving the trash there and even leaving the trash they pulled out felt like a fat "F you". Our stay got even worse later that night. Around 1:30AM I was woken up to someone attempting to enter the room. I heard the door handle moving and immediately shook my partner awake. I got to the door to see what was happening and there were 2 Hispanic males attempting to enter the room. They tried for about 5 minutes then walked away. After they left I could hear them banging on nearby windows. I tried to call the front desk with no answer, so I was left with calling 911. The officer that helped me was prompt to respond and made sure to make contact with us when they arrived. They told us that there is a homeless problem behind the motel, and that they would check around the premises for the males. They assumed they were part of a party happening in a nearby room. I'm not sure if they were able to find them but we had no more attempted break ins the rest of the night, but still had a hard time sleeping as I was absolutely terrified of it happening again. This motel did not meet basic expectations. It was dirty, it was unsafe, and the customer service was unacceptable. They had a chance to make things right but failed to do so, and it honestly felt like they didn't give a crap about it. I have yet to see a small partial refund for the horrible stay we had. Do yourself a favor and spend the extra money at a place that can at the very least provide you with a clean room and a safer environment. read more

Went to the room and the sink was full of water and pieces of food. The kitchen floor was dirty with food and sticky. When I went back he said it had been cleaned. Was reluctant to send any to clean it. Now I'm sitting in my truck 30min after check in waiting for the room to get cleaned. I didn't stay! I had a 6 day stay in the grand suite, look at the pictures of the room! I left and drove home. Family vacation ruined!! I ended up sleeping in the truck in the parking lot as the room was so nasty. The bathroom was nice, especially the shower. Hot water at the sink and the shower was instantaneous which is understandable give the water crisis the region is experiencing. On a recent family trip to Fort Bragg, we checked into this establishment and immediately encountered a problem. The manager was not honoring the room rate given to us over the phone. He kept saying "oh I show you how I take care of you" as he shows us a receipt for another guest displaying a higher rate. He kept saying "see how I take care of you". 1. How rude. We are seasoned travelers. This was not our first hotel/motel stay. Do not insult our intelligence. We fully understand it was a holiday weekend. 2. Honor your word. In the hospitality business, your reputation is key. Good or bad. If you give a potential guest a specific rate (regardless of which weekend), then honor it and do not change it upon check in. You see- people plan trips based on what you are told. Imagine if IHOP promised you unlimited pancakes on "Unlimited Pancake Day" only to tell you upon arrival that they really meant you can only have 2 and not pancakes but white toast with syrup. So we moved past this and checked in at the rate provided at the counter. When we got into our room it had a smell so horrible, so strong that we nearly passed out. The smell was of bleach. Strong bleach. Not sure why it was so strong. In fact the bathroom didn't even smell like that. So where was the smell coming from?? Did someone die in this room and they were trying to mask the smell?? Having asthma, I decided to contact the front desk to request another room. This was a health issue. All the manager said was "ok I call you back in a couple minutes". That did not happen. However- in about 5 minutes, the other front desk person came by with keys to another room. We truly appreciated that. She took the time to go into the new room to make sure that one was ok. It was. This place is "ok" for a one night stay. But if you have a choice- stay elsewhere. ANYwhere else. This property definitely shows age. And quite frankly poor maintenance. The lamp shade was torn. Behind the bed (yes- I looked behind the bed and dresser) was filthy. Shower had a very slow drain. So slow that at one point it felt as if I was wading in a dirty community pool. In fact- at one point, some foreign hair came up. And by foreign, I mean NOT mine. Just gross. Would I ever stay here again? Sure- if I had a homeless lodging voucher from the local welfare department or otherwise desperate. I would rather sleep in my car and bathe in the shower of the gods (otherwise known as Rain). I have come to Fort Bragg every year for the past 15 years or so. First (and last) time at this place. This place is just unacceptable in my book. Like I said- do yourself a favor and save your medical insurance co-pay (because I feel I need some sort of shot now) and stay anywhere else. DO NOT STAY HERE! Simply stayed over night, left my backpack with my wallet on accident. Two hours later I realized and called motel. When I arrived back at the motel I looked EVERYWHERE in the room and found two food items in a drawer with my hair scrunchie around a bag of chips, those items were in my backpack.. I was confused so I went to the office to tell them I called about the backpack. They had my backpack and when I checked inside my stuff was all out of the pockets and my wallet had all the change missing with the zipper open and money as well. Recently renovated, pet friendly, with a very comfortable bed, great shower, effective window AC during a heatwave, and the place was packed but was surprisingly quiet! Smaller rooms but fine for two people. Located close to the south part of town, so away from the more industrial part of Ft Bragg. About 10 minutes from Mendocino for lots of dining options. The only downside to this motel stay was that it was really expensive at $285 a night. Granted, it was Labor Day weekend, but still felt a bit overpriced for a motel experience. read more

The room was nice however the mattress needs to be replaced. It was like sleeping on rocks. The chair at the desk was so low you couldn't even use it and it wouldn't stay up when you raised it, and the back of the rocking chair was broken. The pillows were about a foot or more thick and wouldn't compress so you break your neck trying to sleep on the horrible things, I had to use a folded bath towel for a pillow. Why do hotels/motels use those horrible pillows? Also with peoples allergies the shampoo, conditioner, soap and lotion should be FRAGRANCE FREE, the soap and lotion were fine but the shampoo and cream rinse smelled like coconut... no one wants that horrid smell in their hair.
