I loved Surfas! I was in heaven walking in. Another great place to add to my list of Culinary places to shop at. There were a few things I couldn't find but its ok as all stores differ with some products. I loved all the imported products, from the butter and cheese to all my baking desires. I cant wait to come back. I was able to register my business and I am looking into buying a piece of equipment that they make that I have been looking for. Parking is decent and we also tried out some goodies from the coffee and sandwich deli. They have a nice cozy area with tables and chairs to enjoy eating some goodies. I would definitely recommend this place if you are in the food industry and even if you are not simply finding some great imported foods too enjoy and cook with! read more

What a gem this place is! This place has so much to offer. I love the unique ingredients and goods you can find here that you really wouldn't find elsewhere around LA. I spent so much time just looking at all the different products. I ended up leaving with quite a bit, but it was worth every penny. I'd also recommend stopping here for a bite as well. I tried the lamb burger (which was a special on the menu) and it was so perfect. Very juicy with just the right amount of gaminess you'd expect from lamb. It came with a side of pan-fried seasoned potatoes which were so much better than french fries! Can't wait to come here again! read more

Surfas is heaven on earth, as far as I'm concerned. My husband likes cooking sure, but he's not a nerd about it like me, and he even likes noodling around their store. We miss having the one in Costa Mesa, wayyy closer to us, but the drive up to L.A. is worth it for us. The store has an amazing array of kitchen and dining equipment, as well as some luxury food items. It's where I currently get my Valrhona. Since they have moved from Culver City to Arlington Heights, it seems like it is a little more relaxed, the employees like to assist you, and the people are friendlier. They have almost everything you need to make dishes worthy of a foodie audience, and the prices are not too crazy. The private parking lot helps you get in and out quickly with the goods for dinner. The moment you walk in... you smell either fresh coffee brewing or salty panini being toasted. How dare they make me smell something delicious as I shop? I really liked this store. They carried a lot of gourmet food items, dry, frozen, and refrigerated. I've been in the chocolate chip cookie baking mood and saw lots of chocolate sold. Great place for amateur foodies. I am self proclaimed food snob who can enjoy Nobu as much as a LA Dog downtown. So I really like being able to come down to Arlington Heights/Crenshaw and pick up some low key black pudding or gold mushroom for some decent cost. You honestly can't go wrong with any of the sandwiches here but I always default to the Ultimate BLT. They don't call it "ultimate" without the goods to back it up! The burrata cheese is MONEYYYYY! Their mixed greens salads w balsamic vinaigrette is a perfect balance. One thing to *NOTE* is to drink A LOT of water and stay hydrated bc the Nueske applewood smoked bacon is salty. It was a sad day that I shopped Surfas Culver City store's liquidation sale; the final day. Staff was as usual upbeat yet the closure hung heavy, bittersweet, with hopes of finding a new venue soon. Surfas remained available for online orders, and I did take advantage. But it just wasn't the same experience. Frequent emails finally announced, at last, a new brick and mortar address! I dallied. Too busy at work, the new store is further away, I don't have time. All excuses kicked to the curb when my BFFs asked how I'd like to celebrate my August birthday. So a field trip, an adventure scheduled and off we went. So glad we did! Albeit the real estate is smaller there's still a wealth of the great stuff to be found, the necessities of both professional and home cooks. There's still a most amazing test kitchen for classes or demonstrations too. I bought: THE only coffee worth drinking (IMHO, just ask me) Café Du Monde, NOLA's chicory laced brew. Nielson Massey Vanilla. Black quinoa. Votive style shot glasses for hubby's gazpacho served up as an appetizer or my affogato, the only dessert I know how to make. Wine stoppers cuz an unfinished good bottle must be saved at least until the morning after... Free parking off of Third and do fuel up at the café prior or after shopping! read more

We stocked up on some necessities (spices, meats, cheeses, etc) but also found some new, fun items. visited this amazing kitchen supply store and specialty grocery store during my amazing weekend here! their selection was impeccable, you just can't find some of the things that they have inside anywhere else! I ended up over spending, but i dont know where i would see what they had inside! I got two flavored syrups, elder flower and rose since I really like floral drinks! I also good seafood picking tools for crab and oysters! my friend is really big into keto so I got her keto caramel sauce! I also got a syrup pump, a bar mixing spoon, and a brush to clean out my coffee cup since I like to make cold brew at home! They also have a great selection, Tahitian , Mexican and Madagascar! Ah, Surfas. I finally found where they relocated to after closing the Culver City store a while back. Same ol' Surfas! A little smaller but packed with gourmet food items, baking goods, and a huge assortment of different kitchen tools! The staff is always friendly, helpful, and outgoing. read more

As someone who cooks a fair amount, this is an absolute wonderland. Most everything is reasonably priced and they have such an array of kitchen tools that I've been able to get the most random items; a high-quality trigger ice cream scoop, pie server, espresso cups/saucers, kitchen torch, and more. I was also able to find feuille de brick, an item nearly impossible to find in the US. If you need industrial kitchen items, they have those too! Other notable items: Tesseire and Monin flavored syrups (even rarely seen flavors, like kiwi), top quality olive oil, French flours, canned seafood, whole spices, baking accoutrements and decorating items, specialty sausages/charcuterie, pasta, and even frozen bake-at-home baguettes that are great in a pinch. read more

This is truly a food lovers paradise. Many rare products and tools not easily found under the same roof. They are a bit pricey, but if you want the good stuff, your going to have to pay for it. Frozen puff pastry from France, no problem, Wild boar, Guanciale, Bacalao, Every pastry bag tip ever made, a food mill, sous vide rigs, Their Cuban roast coffee is awesome. The list goes on ad nauseum. Be careful, its easy to blow up your budget here, death by a thousand cuts. Great cookware selection as well. Surfas, which has been family owned and operated since 1937, is jam-packed with thousands of culinary items for the food enthusiast or professional chef. One of our favorite spots inside the store is its cheese counter, packed with Goudas, Cheddar and all kinds of stinky cheese. They regularly offer demos, including sessions with their in-house cheesemonger. And did we mention, it's free? The demos often include recipes and free samples. You had me at free cheese! While you're there, you can pick up any kind of kitchen device you could possible imagine and more. It's one fun spot that keeps us coming back. read more

We came here to replace one of our Henckels knives and were disappointed they don't carry Henckels. However, we were VERY happy to check out the new location. Easy parking lot within the property. Displays are nice. Non gender bathroom was very clean. You can buy cheeses, deli sandwiches, salads, and sweets! ( see my photos) We tasted samples of their panini sandwiches: roast beef and reuben. WOW! That sold us! We quickly ordered one each TO GO and had to wait a bit. Frankie who took our order at the cashier was super sweet and friendly and kind. The older sturdy guy who asked me my name and what I was waiting for was the opposite of Frankie. Too bad I didn't catch his name. He had a bad attitude. He was going to make espressos for the folks who came after me, and I overheard someone tell him to make our paninis first, since we were waiting. I did nothing to provoke him either. He nearly scolded me when he gave me my sandwiches. Geesh! Bottom line, this store rocks! The rest of the staff were very friendly with good eye contact. read more

This place isn't for the everyday person, in my opinion. Everything's either huge or very technical. If you have a mansion, you'll probably do fine with these huge pots and pans but if you have a one-person kitchen, it most likely won't work out. Luckily, the products are all of good quality so whatever you end up buying, you'll probably find some use from it. I'd come here for their selection of foods from around the world, not the kitchenware. That's the left side of the store and it's a pleasure to look through for quality European goods. read more

I really liked the first original location, and then they moved here! Why ? This new location is great, but not as great as the first location. They seem to have less product and the neighborhood is a lot different. The parking is way smaller then the other location. This place is amazing for all chefs and bakers. They are packed with great goodies (baking ingredients, chocolates, baking and cooking tools, decorative pieces and more). I kinda wanted to buy everything but didn't. I went to purchase a baking stone and it was in stock. Also purchased some spatulas and a sifter. They also have a small cafe in the back. I tried their pre packed beat salad, it was so divine. They also have a large selection of cheese and meats for all of you Charcuterie Enthusiast. Will continue visiting. read more

This place is a baker's dream~!!! So many ingredients... so many choices... To be fair, I didn't have a chance to compare prices with online stores, but that's because I was completely mesmerized by the selection of chocolates and extracts they had on their shelves (not to mention all the different flours and cake pans and loaf pans and packaging supplies and decorating tools and... you get the picture). They also have a great selection of savory ingredients and cookwares and supplies. If nothing at all, it is definitely worth a visit - even if it's just to get lost in the aisles. This is my favorite place ever! They have the best coffee and cheeses! really this place is a hidden gem I didn't go there at the previous location but it's so close to home so I had to visit. They not only have diverse bakeware and cutlery but also imported ingredients like unique mushrooms and every color sprinkle you can imagine. They also have baking and cooking classes by Cordon Bleu and other famous and talented chefs which I plan to join one day. the staff is super friendly and everyone is usually smiling. They have great music and sometimes host events. The other day I visited and they were selling French books outside in the seating area. the parking is really small so come early if there is an event but usually there is enough space for everyone. Make sure to come around to 3rd Street because the entrance is not on Washington! read more

I went a few weeks ago actually looking to drop some scratch on at least a new knife and some general supplies and I have to say I left pretty empty handed. I used to love Surfas, but they've been going downhill ever since they moved. Now their food selection really isn't "restaurant supply" but just "overpriced gourmet." I think today's visit is probably our last, at least for food products. The Sicilian holiday cake was literally half the price at our local Italian market. The 15% case discount for canned tomatoes came to the same price per can as the single unit cost at that same market. The holiday candied fruit peel was packed into tiny wee boxes and marked up about two thousand percent. You can buy the fancy chocolate cheaper on Amazon. They still have a decent selection of bakeware and cooking utensils. I would buy them at Surfas if it were more convenient for me, but I'm not going to make a special trip just to get a cake pan. I never used to go just for the prepared food, but the old student-run restaurant was fun and different. Now they just have a sad counter where they warm up prepared sandwiches. read more
