Syrups are made in house, so your beverage isn't tainted by an artificial aftertaste & milk alternatives (almond, coconut, & oat) are available for an additional .75 cents. They also have delectable pastries & breakfast burritos (vegetarian or bacon). Their signature drinks offer unique flavor combinations. The Evergreen Latte intrigued me (espresso, house made vanilla syrup infused with orange peel & rosemary & almond milk.) The blonde guy that took my order and the guy with the dark curly hair that personally brought my latte to me were so incredibly nice. I'm sure the barista is too. They both made me feel welcomed. There is limited seating inside and plenty of tables in the courtyard but I took my latte back to the office. I enjoyed the notes of orange & rosemary. It had just the right amount of sweetness to balance out the boldness of the roast and the almond milk added a touch of creaminess. I rarely give 5 stars on a first visit but the exceptional customer service makes me want to come here every morning so I can start my day with a smile. read more

I will comeback back over and over again for a smoothie from here. The guys who work here bring wonderful energy, a great way to start your day. Their pastry selection looks great. I tried their vegetarian breakfast burrito. It was ok, not life changing and definitely on the small side. But the smoothie and service really sold me. DTLA coffee adventures continue! The coffee was really good, and while there isn't any seating inside, there's plenty of outdoor seating shared among the neighboring businesses. I didn't try any of the food, but the pastry I had was delicious. Honestly, I would have never discovered this spot if I hadn't searched for it, it's tucked away in an almost hidden, underground-style location. I was at conference at the Omni Hotel nearby so this was a very needed and convenient pickup spot for some coffee. I got an iced Shroom Latte because I love chaga so much. This review is strictly for my experience with the iced matcha latte. The service is actually great, the cashier in the front register was very nice and was helpful and explaining everything with my iced Matcha latte order. This coffee shop is relatively small so expect a couple of stools available if you're looking to sit, otherwise it is best that you sit outside in the premises. Most people who order from here just go in and out. The iced much a latte was OK, but this shops main offering is coffee. If you're not snooty about how your matcha is, it's passable. Exceptional service and coffee! When you walk in, the vibe is as if you actually are at a beach-side cafe. They pay their homages to Angeleno life with their dodgers bobble head display and the glass walls bring in a lot of natural light. The menu is simple but definitely broad enough to cater to the coffee, tea, matcha, and even smoothie people. The coffee is strong!!! The orange mocha is delicious and the flavors mix well but you will be very energized. The pastry selection dwindles as you go later in the day but they're all yummy. Most importantly, the staff are so great and personable. They make an effort to give you a great customer experience down to making sure the drink is in your hand when it's done. I agree with many of the other posters - this is a great coffee place if you work nearby or walk through the area. Parking is tough since it's downtown. My coworkers and I come by every so often to do a morning coffee run. It typically isn't too busy so the wait isn't too long but if you see a huge crowd, be prepared to wait a bit longer. Everyone who works there is super nice and they personally hand you your coffee. I typically get the iced latte, and its pretty good. Is it kind of expensive? Yes. Is everywhere expensive? Also yes. Would I suggest you to come out of your way and pay for DTLA parking for coffee? Nope. But, if you work nearby and want something different than Starbucks, I would recommend coming here. read more

I came by this coffee shop for an afternoon pick me up. The shop is located on lower level of cal Plaza right under 1 Cal tower. The shop is small and cozy with a few counter style seats along the exterior walls. I ordered an ube latte off the seasonal menu with oat milk. The espresso was nice and bold and, as other reviews have mentioned, was strong. However, the ube syrup in the drink was a bit plain and made the drink heavy. I would probably try some of their other drinks, but wouldn't get this drink again. Service here was quick and friendly. They also do not charge extra for milk alternatives, which was a major plus. Overall, this isn't a bad option for a local coffee shop in the area, but it's also not somewhere I would go out of my way for. read more

There is no parking here because it's DTLA. Small place but it's pretty cozy. It's more of a grab and go situation. Their coffee is pretty strong, which is perfect to grab before heading over to work. I got their Tres Leches Latte and it was so good. I can't wait to try other stuff on the menu! Sometimes Starbucks just doesn't quite cut it for me, so I was pretty glad to find Surfboy & try something new! They're located in the lower level of One California Plaza DTLA. Since they're nearby my office, we've had the chance to try a lot of their menu. First things first - the coffee is good and will put a pep in your step! The Tres Leches Latte is the standout so far. The pastries are good and the breakfast burrito is decent but on the smaller side considering the price. The employees are really nice & accommodating. It took me a minute to find this spot because I'm not familiar with the area. I think it's a spot to visit when you're in the area for something else. Parking is not worth it. Once I figured it out where it was I ordered quickly. The have a lean menu. It's nice that they have a unique menu. I should have asked for an alternative option from the coconut water. I know I don't like it but I thought I could their drink. I finished the drink but I couldn't get past the coconut. Was craving a breakfast burrito in DTLA that wasn't huge and wasn't Wake and Late (which I do love). Stumbled on Surfboy, which is tucked inside the lower level of the One California Plaza. It's mostly a coffee spot (and there were nearly a dozen people in line or waiting for their drinks), but I wanted the veggie breakfast burrito. It took about five minutes, but it was a comfortable hang watching the 5-6 people behind the counter. They all seemed to be having the best day, but oddly not in a weird, cult-y way. They just seemed to be enjoying their jobs. The burrito came pre-cut (thank you) and with some delicious pre-packaged red and green sauce (just enough of each for the burrito). The burrito itself was delicious - the eggs were fried, with the yolks just shy of being set, a plethora of tator tots and gooey cheddar. Really great! read more

Surfboy is a welcome addition to the Cal Plaza food offerings!!!! I work in Wells Fargo Tower and our "fancy" coffee place, Lucky's, just closed permanently. I'd say Surfboy is comparable but better. Their pastry selection is MAGICAL. They have at least 4 different savory pastries including an heirloom tomato tart with boursin cheese, a roasted mushroom/cheese tart, a turkey/cheese croissant (very unique!), ham/cheese croissant, and more. Their sweet pastries look great too -- especially the scone with Matcha icing. The other amazing thing is that they sell breakfast burritos which they get fresh every morning from The Rooster on Pico. They are solid breakfast burritos, comparable to Wake n Late but a bit smaller, and only $12.50 which is not bad considering that many breakfast burritos in the are cost upward of $15 now. They have some unique drinks like Cafe Con Leche and Chocolate Mint Mocha. The drink prices range from $3.50 - $7, pretty typical for a nicer coffee shop. They are genuinely excited about their menu and gave me a full tour of the pastry menu which was so sweet. I'm so excited to give this place my business!! read more

Stumbled on this place as I was leaving corner bakery. I went to check it out, I enjoy trying out new coffee shops and trying matchas or cold brew. The place is nice and trendy, love the plants. I ordered hot Matcha latte, I like my matcha unsweetened. Their Matcha isn't sweeten which is a plus for me. I am excited to try their pastries on my next visit.(which will be often) If I need a pick me up this place is just a hop, skip, and jump from my job. Welcome addition to the 2cal plaza, I tried the mint mocha and it was great, and had real mint in it.

The people there are great and the drinks are bomb! Got a vanilla chai latte with oatmilk and it was absolutely amazing. I had to try a pastry since it was my first time so i got the ginger matcha scone. More matcha than ginger which was overpowering but still a tasty treat nonetheless. Will definitely be coming back during my breaks. read more
