Came by for coffee the other day and it was a mediocre experience. Boxx Coffee Roasters is located within the Arts District. The vibe of the cafe was lit although the Gen Z barista seemed a touch clueless. Opted for an iced latte and the latte itself was lacklustre. The shot tasted sour. Stopped by Boxx Coffee and had a cortado made with their seasonal Rwanda beans. The highlight was being able to pick up some of the black tea characteristics, which gave the drink a nice level of clarity and let the origin stand out. The cortado was served a bit hotter than a cortado should be, which muted some of the flavors early on. As it cooled, the coffee became much more expressive and the Rwanda profile started to shine through. The crema and microfoam on top were also a little thicker than what I'd typically expect from a cortado, and the latte art was fairly minimal. The space itself was beautiful and a good place to hang out. The service was friendly and straightforward. Overall, the coffee was good and I would definitely return. read more

After dining at Propaganda, a friend and I decided on grabbing a coffee to kill some time and chat. It happened to be right next door, so it was convenient in that regard. When I first walked in, it was hard to ascertain where their menu is. It is on the left wall, and there are some specials listed on a pillar by the register. It took me a minute to register where this stuff was, but their menu is extremely simple at a glance. This spot does not carry syrups or sweeteners, which was unexpected. I genuinely enjoy different flavors that make coffee shops more unique to try, when I try a new shop, so I was slightly bummed on that. I got an iced cafe latte, and I did think it was still good. It was smooth, despite not being sweet. The baristas working here are nice, attentive, and it definitely seems like they care about quality coffee and their craft. The interior is spacious and more of an industrial look, which I don't mind. I don't think I'd be stopping by again, unless I was also dining or doing something else close by, but this was an enjoyable new try. Dine in service is in full effect and that right there gets my respect. I ordered the espresso shot set to start off with and it was a sure hit with the presentation as well as the kick I needed. Next I had their Cortado and it was also good but no surprise there. I ended this adventure with the Pour Over and it was the perfect exclamation point to my journey. It's very nice inside. There's plenty of seating, a decent number of outlets, and the space feels comfortable to work or hang out in. The furniture does feel a bit worn in places, though. The menu is surprisingly small, and they don't offer flavor options for lattes. I usually prefer sweeter coffee drinks or even chai/matcha options, but those weren't available when I visited. The coffee itself was okay -- not bad, but probably not something I'd order again. Parking is also a struggle. Garage parking can go up to $24 max, and parking at One Santa Fe is around $18 max. Street parking exists, but it's notoriously limited in this area. That said, the service was genuinely great and very fast. Overall, it's a comfortable space with solid service, but between the parking situation, limited menu, and average coffee, I'd give it a 3/5. read more

Located on 3rd St in the heart of the Arts District in Los Angeles, this coffee shop provides lots of seating indoors and outside, for people to enjoy their beverages and to study/read/converse. It's mostly ambient lighting, so on a cloudy day like today, it's a bit dim if you want to read. Staff are friendly and quick. We ordered cafe lattes, a matcha latte and cinnamon rolls. They brought them to our table within 8 minutes, with the cinnamon rolls gently heated. Wow! They tasted like croissant cinnamon rolls with flaky butteriness, not overly sweet. Cute cafe that serves Turkish coffee! Very cute, chic, and quiet cafe in dtla. Walked in specifically for the Turkish coffee as it's something you can't find just anywhere. Flavor was just as I would have hoped, very strong and flavorful. Also tried one of their vegan chocolate muffin. Omg wasn't expecting it but it was very good. Nice place to sit and do work. Several small tables to sit for a bit to chat with a friend, maybe take a zoom call. Can see students sitting and studying with small groups (reminded me of my college years). read more

Back again! Came on a Sunday afternoon and it wasn't busy. It wasn't dead either. There were still some spaces available and I was able to sit and read my book for a bit. There were plenty of foot traffic of people going in, ordering, and then going out. But the line never accumulated and got long. The two baristas were very good. They're located in Aliso luxury apartment building on E. 3rd street. We came on a rainy weekend to grab some coffee. I was mesmerized with the modernity and exquisite layout design of this cafe. Clearly, no money was spared here. That I can tell you. Moreover, the cafe's atmosphere has a positive energy and peaceful tranquility. Their coffee menu list was modest as well as their pastries. I had a Croissant and hot Turkey Coffee, a strong traditionally prepared enjoyed in small cups. It is served with a small cup of water to cleanse thy palate. Drinking this coffee is traditionally not meant to be rushed as culture dictates it. The best way to complement this coffee is with a warmed butter Croissant to assuage the robust flavor of the coffee. Staff were cordial and professional. Prices were relatively fair and affordable. Parking in the art district can be challenging, so it's best to come early in the morning. Overall, one can posit that this is a lovely modern cafe. I highly recommend it. read more

Beautiful, spacious coffee shop with the best latte art I've encountered thus far in my LA speciality coffee adventures. The swan latte art is such a delight when you encounter it! I prefer an acidic coffee because of the bright flavor profile, which I think seems to fit with the beans that Boxx uses for most of their espresso drinks. In the cappuccino, the roast veers more on the chocolatey side, and combined with milk results in a buttery mouthfeel with a sweet aftertaste. The baristas here are consistent and skillful, and clearly take pride in their work. Their single origin roasted beans, whether Ethiopian or South/Central American are quite expensive to buy for home use. That said, for an in-house, local roaster, their beans are incredible. As an amateur home barista, I am just more inclined to trust the Boxx baristas to treat their exquisite beans with professional care! read more

My wife, son and I stopped by here for a coffee. I had been here before, loved it and recommended it. My wife had a cappuccino, and my son and I had the coffee of the day. It was a great coffee and cappuccino, well prepared and a nice early afternoon pick me up. But the real star of our visit to Boxx Coffee Roasters were the friendly staff and relaxed, pleasant ambiance. We sat outside on a beautiful day in comfortable chairs and chatted and people watched. The decor both outside and inside is very stylish: pleasantly lit with light colored materials and a place to buy food and bags of coffee. This really is a nice place to hangout for awhile and enjoy the little pleasures of life. I'm not always in the Arts District but it will be a stop in the future I hit when I am. read more

The ambience of this coffee shop is so quintessentially DTLA/Arts district -- sleek modern industrial interior with a decent amount of seating (and even a bathroom). Even on a weekend, it was very quiet even with decent amount of people inside. Lots of people just sitting there sipping their coffee inside or outside with their dogs (who were very good boys and very well behaved). I ordered an iced cafe latte and service was quick and I got my drink within 5 minutes of ordering. They have a variety of their own coffee beans you can buy there in person or online -- I saw some customers chatting with the employees about the different roasts so staff seem very knowledgeable! No complaints about my drink! Very smooth, tastes like a lighter roast. $6.25 for a drink is very standard I feel in LA especially in downtown. Lovely staff/cashiers. They explained to me how Turkish coffee was different from other types with details of how it is prepared (without a filter) and how the taste can be experimental (as the grounds are still in the cup, the coffee brews (or steeps) and the flavor profile can change as it sits/cools). Fun and experimental as it's normally something I don't drink. I did my Turkish coffee with the Ethiopia bean. Wonderfully nuanced and bright/fruity without being overpowering. Note that the coffee will be thicker! Especially towards the end. Ambiance was chill with some people working and others catching up with friends. I've been coming to this location since it first opened a few years ago. It's amazing to see how much they've grown and established themselves in the neighborhood. The drinks are all solid. If you're unsure of what to order, ask the barista behind the counter. Even in the very early mornings, the service is consistently friendly and helpful. There are some good seats with chargers if you need to come in and work. However, the place gets busy! It's located in the Aliso Apartment building with other local dining spots.
