We were in OBX for three days and ended up going to Surfin' Spoon twice and even came home with a hat, a t-shirt and some stickers. Everything from the decor, to the ambience, the people working there all amazing and super nice!! Now lets talk about the ice cream - amazing. I am obsessed with this place it is so awesome in every way! The service, the options, the flavors, the decor, wow! The Staff is so friendly and funny and they make the experience even more enjoyable. The surf style decor is super cute and fun to observe as you enjoy your fro yo. How can you not search out the best ice cream place that the beach has to offer? I stumbled across this small ice cream parlor on yelp while on vacation and knew that it was a must try. We were spending time at Jockey's Ridge and after our picnic, decided to scope it out. Nestled off the beaten bath and located by an eclectic art gallery, Surfin' Spoon was just as I had anticipated, but better. The coral door caught my attention from the get-go. We walked inside and the layout was awesome! There were small tables to sit at with centerpieces decorated for fall. There was a wrap around "bar" styled high top counter as the focal point of the room, with high seating around the outside and low seating on the inside. A TV was placed in the center of the room for all to see. Similar to Sweet Frog or Yum, this frozen yogurt parlor displays their price per ounce before you dive in to get your purchase. They offer two different sized bowls, (I didn't realize this until I was the ONLY one in our group to get the largest one after we had purchased!) about 10 different types of frozen yogurt, and all the toppings you could ever dream of putting on top! I tried the Salted Caramel Pretzel, Peach, and Pomegranate Raspberry Sorbet. None of the flavors disappointed! A mixture of chocolate and peanut butter with some fruit were my choices to coat the yogurt, with some hot fudge and peanut butter sauce to top it all off. Everything was fresh, to die for! Additional notable features about this quaint parlor: they have a small gift shop with clothing and a children's book based on, you guessed it, a surfing spoon! The ceiling cracks were filled with money bills and coins, a fundraiser for Autism. They offer gluten free yogurt options and are allergy conscious which is not present at your typical frozen yogurt joint. Finally, the lady who helped us was so nice, explained the process and kept checking up on us while we were eating. If we ever come back to OBX, this will be the top of our list. read more

I had already planned a trip with my family and decided to go once we were able to throughout our trip. Upon walking in you immediately see money (tips) all over the place due to an old tradition before the store was renovated. I decided to go with the hand made classic ice cream sandwich, which was vanilla ice cream between two chocolate chip cookies, all home made. It was delicious and I was not disappointed! We hadn't realized before we went that this was their new location (that just opened) but quickly learned the history while waiting in a fast moving line. Surfin' Spoon is such a gem. I had bought their ice cream sammies from local grocery stores in OBX (Cahoon's and Conner's!) and already decided they were the best ice cream sandwiches I'd ever had. On this trip, I finally made it to the origin, and I didn't think I could love this place more but I do! The store has such a great atmosphere, from the cute arched door to the Surfing for Autism donations jammed into all the walls and ceiling to the Surfin' Spoon kids book. Not to mention the froyo, which was delicious! I got strawberry and cheesecake, topped with...strawberries and cheesecake. Which I enjoyed out on the porch after packing my half dozen sammies into an ice chest to take on my 4 hour drive home! Can't wait to come back to the OBX for this! Oh and the beaches. read more

You can't get any tastier frozen treats. Also, it's clean. Like I would let my kid eat off the floor kind of clean. Those machines are so clean they could be see-through and all you'd see is frozen yogurt goodness, which isn't what other companies could say. And the spoon crew...you couldn't meet any better kind of folks! They're the kind of people your grandma goes home talking all about how, "They were sweeter than the fro-yo!" And then you have the incredible atmosphere that Boss Lady pours her complete heart and soul into, and it shows! I'm not trying to be dramatic or anything, but the Surfin Spoon is the best thing that has ever happened to me. I mean, from the picture perfect exterior to the craft interior to the fact that they donate all tips to autism research... That's all amazing. And to top it all off, their yogurt and sorbet are insanely good. The only better yogurt I've had is Pinkberry -- but that's a chain and I'm partial to tart yogurt. But their yogurt is much better than any other chains like Menchies or Sweet Frog, in my opinion. Plus, not only does the place have character, but their staff is just about the friendliest ever. This place is so cute and it has vegan cookie sandwiches! I was so happy to find this out. I tried the chocolate cookie ice cream sandwich and LOVED it! My boyfriend made his own frozen yogurt treat in a cup and enjoyed it. This place has a variety of flavors and toppings for frozen yogurt along with a variety of cookie ice cream sandwiches. They had a few regular and vegan sandwiches to choose from. They change out some flavors seasonally and I saw they had 1 cookie sandwich that was vegan and gluten free, I forgot what the flavor was though, my guess they have at least 1 option during each season. My wife loved the lemon lavberry sandwich so much we went back the next day to get another one. She doesn't usually like lemon flavors in her desserts but said that this was executed perfectly. I got frozen yogurt-strawberry, something else fruity that I don't recall, and salted caramel pretzel with hot fudge on top. The two fruity flavors were quite good, but didn't mesh well with the pretzel (not shocking), which I actually just didnt love by itself anyway.
