Like we established, I'm not much of a froofy guy, but apparently if you put whipped ricotta on my pizza, I'll shovel it down, smile, and thank you profusely. So many wonderful flavors going on. Spicy, salty, creamy, meaty. Loved it all. Refreshing to have flavors this powerful yet not loaded down. Who knew it didn't have to be 12 pounds to be spectacular? I sure as shit didn't think so. That crust though. Pretty damn spectacular. The menu boasts that it's not burnt, it's charred. I was expecting it to be a bit more charred actually. Bit of a cock tease to tell me it's gonna be Denzel and shows up Leonardo. Either way, excellent all around. Oh, and apparently they have beer. Which is my favorite pizza accompaniment. Surely Brewing was a stop on our party bus for a friends 30th birthday - despite it being a Saturday afternoon, there was plenty of space and we found a row of picnic tables for our 15+ group. There was no service at our table but going to the bar to order was somewhat quick. Their drinks were overpriced compared to other breweries, so that is one thing I noticed. Their food was yummy as well and came out quick but again, slightly overpriced. I appreciated the variety of food and drink they offered, the space, and will return. read more

Surly is a great option for a relatively safe place to go out to eat during COVID. They have a massive patio area with picnic tables all spread out, and a very thoughtful system to minimize contact with staff and others. Making a reservation online is easy and they send you details about what to expect and when to stay home ahead of time. They have a new staff role-- the "sentry" who you meet before you reach the host stand. He reminds you not to be an asshole (wear masks when interacting with staff and walking to order food or go to the bathroom) and directs you to the host. The host will see you to your table, and you can go up to the bar to order food or drink off of a menu you read from your phone via QR code. Staff are periodically coming by to take empties, letting you know it's last call, and politely reminding people to wear their masks if walking around. We all know Surly's beers are top notch. I will say I think it's kind of petty that they rebranded my favorite Surly beer, Todd the Axe Man into just "Axe Man" because they parted with their longtime head brewer, Todd. Whatever. I tried the Edge Lord (good but Blackstack's hazies are better) and the Lime Spree (tasted fine but smelled bad). They have pretty much their whole menu available during pandemic times. We got the classic burger, which isn't as good as it used to be, and two pizzas. They serve New Haven style pizza here, and it is bomb! Highly recommend their clam pizza. Overall, I was impressed with Surly's COVID protocols and will be back here again soon! read more

Way overrated I don't get all of the crowds Pizza also sucked Surly is the biggest and most well known craft brewery in the Twin Cities. It is always jammed to the max, and I really don't understand why. I could rattle off an easy five local breweries that are better than here, no problem. Yes, the Darkness is good and I am a sucker for the Pentagram. The rest of it? Not so much. It was my first time back here after a couple years. The second floor has been completely transformed into a pizza restaurant. If you are going to go balls to the wall with pizza, it had better be pretty good. It was not. Super light on cheese and the cheese was kind of liquid-y. Light on toppings. They like to say charred not burned. It was burned in my book. I'll come back for a special beer release maybe but I'm done with their pizza. I have had gas station pizza which is much better and much cheaper. read more

Had to make a special trip to this popular brewery in the east part of town. Thursday afternoon, this place surprisingly had plenty of people inside (and at the patio) despite it being a workday. Took a seat at the bar and looked over the giant draft list. Apparently before you can drink, you have to get a bracelet from the security up front (didn't realize I had gone through the wrong entrance). Once getting a bracelet, was able to order off the draft list. Had a few beers with a couple standouts: Idol Worship - a hoppy smooth pale ale Barrel-Aged Darkness - an extremely strong imperial, with an intense almost syrup like finish There seems to be food here as well as events throughout the week. This place is huge. Plenty of space to be around people or get away from them . Brought kids and had their fresh thin crust pizzas, definitely good. Beer wise, great selection obviously being a brewery. They have a West Coast IPA which was fantastic (cosmic chaos). Their Furious IPA definitely hit harder than a normal one. We discovered Surly pizza and we are now big fans! This brewery does have good beer and a large selection of taps. However, this is definitely one of the more expensive breweries to frequent. They have dining downstairs and upstairs with different menus. We weren't blown away by the downstairs menu. The pizza is upstairs and that's where you want to be! Our go to pizzas are the I'm Your Daddy as we enjoy spice and the pioneer hitchhiker since it's not everywhere you can find seafood pizza. Depending on how hungry you are, one pizza can feed 1-2 people. Service is great, especially with how busy Surly can get during the warmer months! read more

Another brewery outing for the Minneapolis area again! Surly being the one this time! We had three different beers from this brewery... we don't always get the opportunity to try three but it's my preferred approach before dropping a review for a brewery. First beer up for Surly was the Pentagram! A barrel aged sour which was okay but didn't leave Steve or myself all that impressed. Flavor was okay but we are always looking for something memorable and unfortunately we didn't feel like we found it with this beer. The second one was a pale ale. Caveman I believe it was called. Again and unfortunately not a very memorable pale ale either. Always hoping to find something distinctive from "all the rest" in flavor. Third attempt was a good one! My favorite beer out of three I can say with no hesitation at all! The Grapefruit Supreme, a wonderful sour won out in the end and scored Surly a total of four stars. Great Grapefruit beer where it was balanced very well where it wasn't too terribly bitter but not too sugared up either in attempt to curb this bitter citrus flavor. Well handled there and one I can easily go back for with confidence that it's one of the better Grapefruit beers I've had in the last year or so. read more

We didn't go in the brewery but went to a show in the field behind. This is a cool setup! Loved all the food truck options they had. They were even giving out samples of one of their beers. Plenty of clean port-o-potties and a small enough venue to feel like you were relatively close to the band without being squished. This is a classic MSP brewery that should be on everyone's regular rotation. It was a nice night out, so we sat outside in their ample lawn area. It was a movie night, and yet there was still SO much seating. I love that you order right at the table, and delivery from kitchen or bar to table is ridiculously fast even with, I'm sure, so many orders going in and out. I got the mushroom torta and hog frites for food. Both were delicious. The hog frites are always one of my favorites. It's an amazing combination of flavors and textures. The fries have a cheese sauce on them, but miraculously never end up soggy. I love they big chunks of veggies! The torta was brand new to me and I'll for sure get it again. The mushrooms are big and flavorful, and I love the cheese, sauce, and guacamole on it. I'm always a milk toast fan, so two thumbs up for the milk bun. The beer... 30+ brews on tap. Some of your favorite Surly classics and some new options, too. I got a Skull Crusher and a peach sour. Both were exceptional. I also snuck a taste of my friends' cherry and key lime sours. The key lime is at the top of my list for next time. I love that they're dog friendly too. This was another brewery checked off the list in my passport! read more

Our group came a few weekends ago and was able to get a table outside even though it was busy. I was surprised by how big the place was; there's an outdoor area, lower level inside, and an upstairs level where the pizza is. It'll be nice to sit outside again when it's warmer out. You can order drinks at the bar area, but we just scanned the QR code and our drinks were out quickly. We also put our names on the waitlist for a table inside since it was going to rain soon, and that table opened up just in time. If you do switch tables, make sure you close out your tab from your original table first. Instead of the QR code inside, we just had an actual waitress take our orders. Again, food for a party of 6 came out fast. Three of us got the Bulgogi Bowl (not sure if this dish is seasonal), and we were all surprised by how good it was. read more

This place is overwhelmingly awesome. They have gone way above and beyond, and clearly very intentionally, to make this a community brewery experience. An enormous spralling campus of art, music, games and activities that invites college aged kids, to the elderly, to the entire family with the same enthusiasm. They have a huge gift shop with lots of beers to go, and enormous dining area with a great menu, huge outdoor seating with a stage, cornhole, grassy areas, fire pits, etc. And that's just the first floor. Upstairs they have a meeting hall and a pizzeria. The beer was fantastic. They have a huge rotating menu and we were lucky enough to catch it during Oktoberfest. Big ole mugs of beer are only $8 too! Went to Surly Brewing with 2 other people on a Sunday afternoon. We all had Minnesota Pub Passes and used those to get free beers. It was great because our Pub Passes applied to all the beers they had available. I ordered the Grapefruit Supreme and it was a great light, fruity beer. The 2 people I came with both ordered dark beers. My one friend who ordered a dark beer got the last of that particular beer and got it for free which was much appreciated. We all really enjoyed all of our beers. As it was a Sunday, the Sunday brunch menu was available along with a small selection of regular (non-brunch) meals. It was not an overly large menu but everything sounded yummy. We ordered a breakfast burrito, the biscuits and gravy, and the breakfast sandwich. Everyone really enjoyed their meals. I would suggest that the burrito could have been toasted a little to get a crispier wrap. The biscuits and gravy was good but not enough gravy. I really enjoyed my breakfast sandwich but it was a small meal. As the meals were small (aside from the breakfast burrito) we were hungry after and ordered the Hog Frites. These were a major disappointment. The fries were dry with not enough sauce and odd vegetable toppings. Our waitress was nice and we got Everything quickly but we asked for water 3 times before receiving water glasses and a pitcher of water. When we received our water glasses, they were the dirtiest water glasses I have ever seen in my life. Overall, the food was good but there were some small issues that could've made me rate this particular brewery better. read more

What a fun setup Surly has going for it. Set back away from all the madness near the University of Minnesota campus, the brewery is a massive facility with a giant open space for beer and food. I bellied up to the bar to order a beer and was impressed by the selection. From fruit beers to IPAs to dark stouts, they brew a little bit of everything. I had the Peel and Squeal and the Coffee Bender. They couldn't be more different as beers and both were smooth drinking with perfectly defined flavors. Lunch wise was a pork heavy sandwich that was incredible. The meat was cooked amazing and had so much flavor that BBQ sauce would do it a disservice. If you love good beer and good food, make a stop into Surly. They also have a huge patio area for events and just general group hangouts. Enjoy the fun times! read more

I finally made it to Surly, at least in my Yelp era. I was hanging out the first week they opened in my pre-Yelp days and never went back to review. Attractive and airy with a great shaded patio and garden area further into the sun. Some pooches along for the lucky drops of bun and beef. This was the first and will probably be around longer than many of the upstart brew pubs that pop up every year. The brews make the reputation and it will take a few or more trips to sample the batches, not all in one day. People look relaxed and happy and there was an office party in progress outside, what a cool CEO to have a promotion party at Surly. read more

I would give the food here 4 stars. The beer selection is pretty extensive. All beer they brew. I was very impressed with the beer. I have mixed emotions on this venue. I have actually had several items pre being a Yelp reviewer. I had food that was tasty, and food that was not so much. The items I posted in this review: the fries were okay, nothing great. The mac n Cheese was missing something, and not overly creamy. Both the cakes were good, but oh my, 3 of us shared them as they are so very sweet, a little bit goes a long way. The venue is very big, lots of seating. Brew beer on sight, gift shop on sight also. The have a large varof food items as well. The staff are not very helpful, I will say it's because they are usually busy, however, you still need to be helpful. It's fun to see and beer is great, but the find is a pass for me at this time. Give it a try yourself, draw your own conclusions. The prices are in line for the area. I would like to add that I have been there each year for the past 4 years, only left one review, had recent food items and still not anything that I would need to update in my review. read more

beer: 5/5 food: 3.5/5 we went on a Wednesday night to meet up with a couple friends dinner and lounging. we got there around 5 and had no issue finding a table. for the first round, i went with the Surly Furious. great beer for a nice, relaxing evening with friends, and my go to beer in general. for the second round, i tried their 16 Grit. it was described on their board as "seriously. effing. hoppy." - right up my alley! when it arrived, the start was definitely as described. the finish was a little creamy, and almost sweet. i'm not really a fan of noticingly sweet in my beer, so this surprised me a bit. i probably would not get it again. but if you like super hoppy and a tad sweet, this one might be for you. the food - i got the cubano and a side of fries. fries were, well, fries. nothing fancy, just a solid staple. on to the sandwich. on my first bite, it tasted different than what i expected a cubano to be. i thought maybe there was a sauce or something on there, but didn't really see anything. it wasn't bad or anything, just not what i expected. i'd had a big lunch, so i only ate half and took the rest home. i had a couple bites later that night and figured out what i was tasted. the rub that was used on the pork seemed to have been burnt/charred at some point. i ate a little piece of the blacked area and that was it. that's where the taste was coming from. maybe it was just an off day, but i probably wouldn't get it again. atmosphere - this was my first time going and this place is HUGE! everything is nicely spread out and it didn't ever feel too noisy. overall, i'd go again and just eat something different. our friends got a pizza from upstairs and it looked delicious. A group of four of us were in the dreaded Minneapolis for a golf outing and I found this place for us to have some dinner and beers. It was a rather significant let down. Let's start from the top. The parking lot was big yet somehow completely full. Don't know how this was as the inside was only half full. Arrive at the hostess stand and was offered inside or outside and I asked wherever the tvs are and was advised they have no tvs. I guess folks don't come here on Sundays to watch the games. Strike one. We sit down and review the menu and ask about flights of beers to try. They don't do flights (this is a brewery) strike two. We order some food and it was very mediocre at best. We had some tacos and they were actually rather terrible and my friends sandwich was not very good. For the prices they charge too we expected a lot better. Strike three. The servers were plenty friendly but we were disappointed in the lack of talent in the service staff overall. The side of fries that was ordered never showed up and all three of our meals arrived separately to the table. Strike four. Also the menu said "pizza upstairs" and when I asked about this later we were informed if you sit upstairs they serve pizza up there. Why wasn't this mentioned by the hostess when we first walked in?! Strike five. The beers were at least good and they had lots of variety and getting samples were easy. They had stouts which I like but all of them were barrel aged and I'm not a fan of the barrel aged variety's. read more

Omg I can't believe what a f-ing cool space this is! It's huge and even on a Friday summer evening, we were able to get an entire area to our group, and with so many people (and dogs) outside, it didn't feel crowded at all. There are a few places to order drinks/food from, and they go pretty quickly. The beer selection is extensive and had I been there longer, I could see myself trying quite a lot of them! Axe Man and One Man Mosh Pit were both worthy IPA choices. We didn't eat here, but I passed by from my visit to the restrooms, and the food smelled so good. The space inside is also massive, with an upstairs balcony. Gift shop has nice t-shirts and hoodies, which are relatively reasonably priced considering logo'd stores often jack up the prices. Crazy time here--so very busy on an early autumn Saturday afternoon. You may choose to put your name on a list to be seated when one opens up for you, or just keep an eye on the seating situation at the bar. We got lucky and found a couple ready to leave and took their spots. Service is attentive and swift. As you might expect, there is a great amount of attention paid to the brewery product, and proudly so. Equally so, the food coming out of the kitchen is as serious! Being our first visit, we had a couple of brews and chose the Charcuterie platter of two items for $13. Illustrated here is our choice for this day: Duck Pastrami with salad and Pretzel crackers (both delicious!) and the Tuna Lox with Watermelon Radish and grain crackers. Portion size was perfect for a weekend afternoon, and coupled with the beer--all told a very satisfying visit.
