I was a patient at Surprise Lake Dental years ago. My insurance changed and I had to switch dentists. Fast forward to today. I had a cap fall out. It was one of my front teeth and it was important that I got it fixed because of my job. Dr. Shu, despite me not being a current patient, got me in right away. Today, 6/25/2020 I called in to ask about the treatment plan for my daughter's braces as my wife never received a copy of it, we received a bill but no treatment plan. She was sent home from 2 consultations with no information about costs that were sent over to her insurance. When I asked for a copy of this information the woman who answered the front desk phone told me my wife was given one. My wife wouldn't tell me that she didn't receive documents outlining the cost of my daughter's treatment if she indeed had received it. I was placed on hold while she went to "look for it", when she came back she said she couldn't find it (which to me means that there wasn't one, because why wouldn't it be filed in the patient chart, right?) She continued to raise her voice and insist that it was given to my wife and then decided that I was unintelligent and didn't know how insurance works and proceeded to speak down to me about how cost of service is sent to insurance for approval. Right, because I'm incompetent and don't know how prior authorization works. She then proceeded to get louder with me and tell me my wife could call back in and speak to her. I advised her as I work from home and can make these types of calls during the day, I would be the one handling this. She then got more upset, told me that she would need to talk to my wife and slammed the phone down in my ear. I called back and spoke with another individual in the office who was extremely professional and very willing to have a calm conversation regarding our request. She stated that she would find the treatment plan and email it over to me. I gave her my email address and we ended our conversation. 40 minutes later I receive and email stating that Dr. Shou said my wife could bring my daughter in to have her braces taken off. Attached to this email was a copy of a "treatment plan" dated 6/25/2020, so that tells me there was no original treatment plan. It does however have a note under my daughters name "Treatment signed and given to mom". If that was the case, this interaction wouldn't have transpired today. The document sent to me had no signature from my wife on it. It's very clear to me, that sure as heck isn't happening. We will be taking my daughter to a more professional office that will not have someone incapable of being professional as the point of contact. I'm highly confused how asking for my daughter's treatment plan before I make a payment for services rendered is wrong. Someone please help me understand that. Also, I'm aware that every time there's a bad review of Surprise Lake Dental there is alway a passive aggressive comment made by the front desk person. All in all, this was an example of how some folks don't think that professionalism is paramount. *Update* I received a second email stating that I threatened the office. No threat was made, what I said was "After she hung up on me, I could have gone into the office and asked about the treatment plan but didn't as I am a large black man and I wouldn't want the police called if I came in asking why I was hung up on instead of treated with professionalism and respect. In 2020 it is very dangerous to claim these things with the false claims made against black people that happen all over this country. Danielle is creating a paper trail for herself to cover her ass because she knows she was in the wrong. As I told her, I will be contacting the state and leaving my review everywhere I can. *Second Update* Dr. Shou called me to speak with me regarding what was going on. He said he had no problem with sending out a treatment plan for my daughter. I let him know that's all I wanted in the first plavce and it didn't have to get to where it did had Danielle said "not a problem I will get it right out to you", to the request for it. He knew nothing of the conversations or emails Danielle sent to me. While he did apologize on Danielle's behalf (which he didn't have to do). I let him know that we would still take care of our responsibility and that we would not be bringing my daughter back to his office based solely on the way Danielle treated me in this. *Third Update* Danielle decided to pos on her Facebook page that I threatened her life today. I have been coming to see Dr.Shou for probably two years, let me say I have never met a better,more thoughtful dentist in my whole life. Today, I called because I was having some pain in my molar. The great office staff explained that Dr.Shou had a dinner/meeting he had and he didn't have any available appointments . I had mentioned to Danielle (Office Manager) I was leaving on a business trip and I couldn't possibly go with the pain and asked if she could recommend another dentist which she gladly did. She stated she would talk to Dr. Shou and give me a call back. About 10 minutes later Danielle called and said that Dr. Shou would see me when I got off work (5:30PM). I show up and Dr. Shou jumped right in to find the solution to my pain. He worked on my molar for 1.5 hours until the it was fixed! He SKIPPED his dinner meeting for me! Wow, dr. shou and dr. han are both amazing. I saw dr. shou about 6 months ago(ive been with dr. shou for about 3 yrs now), saw dr.han about 4 days ago and both of the doctors are excellent at what they do. dr. han is new to the office but hes had plenty of experience and you can tell when you let him work on you because when he did my fillings, oh boy was i scared! but i didnt feel a thing!!! he was explaining and constantly checking to see how i was doing, very attentive and you can feel the time and care the dr. puts in to make sure youre okay. i can confidently say that i trust both of these doctors to take care of me and my teeth. there are doctors out there whose priority is money but with dr. shou and dr. han you can tell that their priority is to make sure youre well taken care of. honestly, theyve changed my life. i feel comfortable going in for my check ups and cleanings (dont cringe like i used to). oh and the staff, christina and danielle are very friendly as well. havent met the hygenist yet but they all treat me like a family. appreciate what they do, really. i would recommend this clinic to anyone and everyone read more

the dentist was great. the office staff are terrible. when i made the appointment a month ahead of time they were to contact my insurance to find out what the coverage was for an annual exam. they said they did but they lied. i was very specific about only doing what the insurance would cover. they did expensive xrays that were not covered and without my permission. i had had to go in an argue with a terrible woman . they did write a big portion of it. she was very angry and rude. she was just mad because i would not let her walk all over me. who knows how many other people they tried to rip off. hopefully the doctor will see this and and get a more honest office staff. read more
