Stopped in for happy hour on Saturday at 430 pm. Ordered garlic spicy edamame, less spicy. Waited a very long time, and then came out edamame with at ton of raw garlic and a little bit of chili. Another 30 seconds in the wok would have made this a superior dish, as well as some seasoning like salt, soy or smoke. But it clearly was just garlic, chili flakes and Olive oil. Raw garlic. Although I did not find it on the menu I ordered a salmon skin hand roll. They were happy to prepare it at $8 with no happy hour discount. It took a very very long time, some of which is understandable to crisp the salmon skin. Roll was tasty but not highly unusual, except for the orange roe, which was yummy. Bartender was friendly and efficient, but apparently did not understand when I said I couldn't have the crunchies in any rolls that I couldn't have a wheat flour noodle either. We discussed the soba noodle but it is not 100% buckwheat and therefore not gluten sensitive. The kitchen offers a rice noodle option for yakisoba that most Japanese places do not. Kudos! I joined the e-club and intend to come back to try the squid salad! Took home the Spicy Chicken Yakitori with rice noodle. It was spicy and tangy, with smoke flavor from the chicken. I have not been able to order this dish in years, so thank you for the rice noodle option . Joined the e-club, will try again for the squid salad. Slowly, slowly they prepare the meal. Snuck in at quarter to seven and was able to put in our order while it was still happy hour! Pretty reasonable prices from an HH perspective ($4- Cali roll, $7- shrimp tempura) so we ended up ordering a cost of rolls and appetizers. Our server was phenomenal and I was crazy thirsty but also tend to drink a lot of water when I eat sushi with soy sauce. He did such a great job keeping my glass full and was super hospitable with my husband whenever he needed something aka extra ginger. The food was spectacular! The calamari and the sourish sauce it came with was by far the best I've had in a sushi joint!! The edamame came out great, not too squishy & the rolls were spot on fantastic! Been going there since 2012 and stopped after the food quality went downhill. Tried again after they moved. Food was okay, service was a joke. Apparently their server has never read their own menu. Ordered amaebi nigiri (sweet shrimp) and got cooked shrimp. Called the server over and obviously she didn't know that they are actually two different items. Came back from the kitchen she told me they don't have sweet shrimp, then why is it even on the menu?? Never asked me if I want to change my order, never offered a replacement, just left the wrong dish on my table and still charged me full price for something I never wanted. Met a couple of friends here on Saturday night and enjoyed myself. I got there a little bit later than my friends so they had already ordered. I checked out there rolls and had a few and they were delicious. Not overly spicy or salty and just good. I decided to order their philly roll as I wanted something super light. I love that they have reverse happy hour--even on Saturdays! Unfortunately it does not include their mixed drinks, so I decided to get an ace pear pineapple cider. It was very refreshing and went great with the roll. My friend ordered their chicken with vegetable teriyaki bowl that looked and tasted amazing. It had large chunks of broccoli, onions, scallions, and chunks of chicken on top of a bed of thick noodles. I had a few bites and I was super impressed. I actually wished I had ordered one of their bowls versus the sushi rolls. Their bowls were only $12 and could have easily been two or three meals. I found Sushi 101 the other day because my regular sushi spot was crowded and I was too hungry for a long wait, I'm sure we have all been there! Well I decided to take it as a sign because Sushi 101 has now become a regular on my list, so much that I went back twice in the same week after finding them! The inside looks small when you first enter but it's very spacious with plenty of seating and the times I've gone, which have always been during happy hour, they were not crowded at all. All the staff are extremely friendly and have made every experience a lovely one. My favorite way to start every sushi outing is with gyoza, and theirs did not disappoint. I always go with the deep friend over pan fried, and they were DELICIOUS, an absolute must try. The other rolls I ordered were the same, absolutly delicious. Everything tasted fresh and made with care. I was also impressed to see how many vegan options they had on their menu, while I'm not a vegan, my best friend is and it's nice to know there is a sushi place out there that has a plethora of vegan options that my friend can come along to. I always come to sushi 101 in Tempe, if I'm craving sushi. The atmosphere of the restaurant is very nice and we are always seated very quickly. Today the waitress seemed disinterested and seemed like she didn't want to work, understandable but it made things uncomfortable. The sushi was very good and we ended up ordering a lot this time around tonight. It was my first time giving their dessert a go and I enjoyed it a lot. If you love bananas then I would recommend trying it at the end of your meal. Loving come here at night because it isn't busy and you typically just have the whole restaurant to yourself. It is by ASU so naturally a lot of college students will be in there from time to time. We came here before going to see a comedy show at Tempe Improv. The restaurant was pretty empty at 6:30 on a Saturday night, but we still decided to give it a try. Our server was extremely friendly. She helped us with the menu and explained specials. We ordered a few cocktails and settled in. The pear inspired cocktail called The Peary Bird was absolutely delicious. Really sweet and not too alcohol tasting. We had the sunomono (cucumber salad) which was cut a little too think for usual sunomono but was still tasty. For rolls, we ordered the Mango Tango which had a great mango sweetness, the Q Maki which was actually a little underwhelming. The ponzu sauce on that one wasn't super great. It needed something more. We ordered the Sicilian roll which was an interesting take on an Italian inspired roll. The soy sauce was a must for that roll. And finally, the best roll we ordered was the Moon Walk. It had amazing tempura sweet potato with spicy tuna and lemon. I'm a sucker for any kind of lemon wedge topped sushi and this one did not disappoint. I would order that roll over and over again. For dessert, we had the coconut ice cream with fried banana. It was pretty basic overall and they forgot the chocolate drizzle on ours. This is decent sushi, but I would say there are definitely much better places to have sushi. Also, as a side note, we were pretty upset that there was an EXTREMELY loud group shouting profanities at the top of their lungs during our dining experience here and the staff did absolutely nothing about it. Everyone who knows me knows I love a good sushi spot! This my yelpers is a Great spot for sushi. First of all let me start off by saying they offer HAPPY HOUR from 3pm-7pm 7 days a week!!! Now from my experience anywhere else, you cant be that! The servers are so sweet!!! You are immediately greeted and sat wherever you'd like to sit. I have been here on two separate occasions and I sat at the regular bar and then we sat at the sushi bar. Both were really nice and clean. The sushi chef's were talkative and seemed to enjoy their jobs because they were constantly smiling and seemed very genuine about it. I ordered 2 rolls, the spicy krab roll and the salmon roll. I also got it with eel sauce, and ordered a shirley temple. I got all this delicious food for just under $17.00. Thats a deal you can't beat. The sushi was nice and fresh. After waiting 10 minutes for the server to take our order, another 20 minutes for the appetizer, we received 1 of three entrees around the 1 hour mark. Another 30 minutes goes by and the second entree arrives. We finally could not wait any longer after another 30 minutes went by without the order for our third person and we had to leave without them receiving their meal. I might have considered giving this place a second try once their "super low staffing" problems were fixed (according to the server), but when they don't make any effort to make a terrible service right, I would be a fool to give them my business. read more

We ordered our appetizer, then sushi rolls.. my friend is telling a story when we see A ROACH CRAWLING ON HER!!! A ROACH!! Not a beetle. A legit roach that come out when a place is dirty. We jump out of our booth, let the waitress know what happened...and waitress just brings out our check!! $150 worth when we only ate about $60 worth, because we definitely didn't continue eating. We left 3 rolls, and drinks. A manager didn't come out to excuse themselves. Nothing was said to my friend who had the roach on her. Not even a 10% discount. NOTHING. something would have been better than nothing. They didn't even try to kill the roach when there was other eating customers lol I've been in the restaurant industry for a few years now and this is absolutely not how you treat a paying customer. This was my first time trying Sushi 101 with a few of my girl friends. The server was nice and gave us the hour happy menu, two hours before it started. I ordered the Salmon dynamite roll $8 and Squid salad for $4.50. I expected the Salmon dynamite roll to have lots of salmon in it, but inside the roll was all crab imitation meat and a large amount on the top of the roll was also crab imitation meat with crumbs of crunchy salmon on the top. The squid salad had a descent amount of seasoning on it. After I took two bites I noticed about a 2cm hair on one of the squid pieces. I mean I know it happens so I asked the server for another one. Keeping my fingers crossed that it didn't have more hair. A few minutes later Natalie was eating her Las Vegas Roll and Lemon something roll, I noticed that the last piece of sushi had a piece of long hair on it. After that my appetite was lost. We notified the server and she apologized. She said that the two dishes were made in different kitchens. Uhmm, maybe they should be wearing hair nets. I've been coming to Sushi 101 for about 8 months. My top favorite foods: Fire Popcorn Chicken (so spicy and delicious, I can't/won't stop eating), Miso Soup (the broth is like no other), Spicy Seafood Udon (OMG!!!). Every sushi plate I've ordered has been the best ever (so fresh). The staff is pleasant and timely with the entrees. The decor is really cute. I love the big pictures. read more
