We were looking for somewhere to eat in the Mesa Riverview area and I didn't know this was back there, right next to the movie theater. Reviews are very good and so we gave it a try on a Saturday evening. When we arrived there were 2 people eating at the sushi counter, otherwise it was empty. During our time there another couple came in, so it was not busy and easy to get a table. The server was very friendly and service was great. For that I'll push my rating to 4 stars. For me, this place is personally 3.5/5. Everything was decent but nothing I would rave about. And that might just be me, because people love this place in other reviews. It was possibly just a bunch of little things that made me think it's just okay. I thought the texture of sushi rice was a bit too soft, I know it's sticky rice but I felt like it was a little over cooked and too soft. I also thought both of my rolls tasted exactly the same. Which thankfully I thought were good tasting. The stuffed jalapeños were definitely a miss, they were so under fried so mostly a mush of ingredients in a jalapeño. And initially I liked the karaage but had a couple of tough pieces, so overall that was just okay. Miso soup was solid. And I realize that the appetizers are cooked in the back and not by sushi chef, and people rave about the chef. However like I said, both rolls seemed pretty similar tasting and one was supposed to be more spicy. All very standard flavors, like I would expect from AYCE sushi. I think I'm just looking for more delicate flavors with higher quality pieces of fish. I likely should have tried some of the special items listed on the rotating items board near the sushi bar. Next time we go back I'll try sitting at the sushi bar and trying some speciality items. People have said this is the best way to enjoy this place. We will likely come back during a lunch or happy hour special, if I like it better and I can upgrade my review I'd be happy to give this small, local family run business all the stars. read more

My wife and I came for lunch on a Sunday, only two other parties dining. There was only one server (Grace), but service was top notch! There's seating to accommodate couples and small groups. Ample parking in the front and rear. We ordered the samurai roll, monster roll, and Las Vegas roll. My fave was the Las Vegas roll followed by the monster roll! Came here on a weekend and wasn't too busy. Our waitress was nice and provided great service. We order the monster, samurai and Las Vegas roll. All great choices! My only complaint was it was a bit hot inside even with the AC. Plenty of parking near the theater and in the back. read more

We stopped into Makitto Sushi and I'm already planning my next visit--and telling everyone about this place! It is magic. We tried two rolls: The Birdgang Roll - unique, super flavorful, and had the perfect little zing. I didn't even need soy sauce, which never happens! The Fire Dragon Roll - the kick combined with the eel sauce was incredibly well balanced. So good. We also ordered sashimi and nigiri, and this is where Mikito really won me over. I don't normally eat sashimi because I usually find it too fishy, but the quality here was on another level. * Bluefin Sashimi: melt-in-your-mouth delicious. * Yellowtail Sashimi: super light and clean. * Salmon Nigiri: not fishy at all--just buttery and delightful. Everything tasted unbelievably fresh. We sat at the bar and chatted with Jay, the owner and chef, and he was fantastic. Great conversation, clearly passionate about what he does, and the service overall was friendly and prompt. HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend!! I came here with my son after his swim class next door. I have known about this restaurant for a while but had not stopped by previously to check it out! The restaurant was not crowded when we came at noon. Service was very fast and I really appreciated some thoughtful things they did that made the visit special. They brought out a plastic piece to put on my son's chopsticks to make them easier to use. The other really cool thing is that we ordered some sushi and they brought it out on a small sushi boat! We visit from Chicago several times a year and we wanted to try some Sushi since it's my favorite food to eat. We ended up finding this place. There is not very many Sushi spots to choose from in the area. We arrived with no reservation and were greeted immediately and sat down. Their menu was easy to read and well put together. They don't offer all you can eat but I noticed that's not really offered in the Phoenix Metro area. We tried several of their menu items. The Miso soup and Edamame are pretty good. We tried 4 different rolls and out of the 4 only one was to my liking. The 3 did not look good and did not have good flavor. The HEATSTROKE roll was the only one that looked fresh and had plenty of color and just the right heat. The place was empty but after a while the rust came in. The inside of restaurant is clean but not fancy just basic looking. Out server was very nice and took care of our needs. Me personally I think it's over priced for the quality and Ambiance you get. Normally what I get is half the price in Chicago and it's much better quality. I know we're not in Chicago but I love Sushi and I'm rating on my experience so that other sushi lovers get an idea what they are getting. Would I come again Yes. read more

I can roll with Makitto Sushi! I was in the area and stopped by to order food to-go. I came in on a Wednesday, shortly after they opened and was pleasantly surprised they already had a few customers dining. I was greeted and assisted right away. I briefly looked over the menu and decided on the agedashi tofu as well as a couple of sushi rolls. It was ready within 10-15 minutes. I was so hungry and the food smelled so good. I went in my car and scarfed down a few pieces of tofu and rolls before moving on with my day. Everything was delicious and fresh! Really enjoyed everything. Would definitely return. My husband and I went here for our second time the other night to celebrate our anniversary. Normally we get sashimi but lately we've been feeling like rolls and recalled that we really enjoyed Makittos rolls the last time we visited, so decided to check them out again. It's a smaller location but the seating is very nice and the staff is prompt and kind and helpful. The rolls were SO GOOD!! One of them had fried green onion in it and it was such a small detail but it really took the flavor and texture to another level. We got to talking to the waitress as we were finishing up and mentioned it was our anniversary and she brought us a tasty dessert on the house, which was just the cherry on top of a wonderful evening. Oh, and I didn't even mention the spicy edamame, oh my god. Usually spicy edamame is just plain edamame with pepper flakes and chili oil on them. Not with Makitto. They have this insanely delicious creamy spicy sauce that they absolutely DRENCH the beans in and I could honestly have just eaten bowl after bowl of that for my meal. No other spicy edamame is going to do it for me ever again. So good. read more

Here in Phoenix playing some men's hardball baseball in the world series baseball tournament. We walked over here to enjoy some sushi. The sushi chef/owner Jay, is one of the best chefs we met in the past 20 plus years of eating sushi. We're first timers here and everything, and I mean everything, we ate, was delicious! Once seated at the bar, we were asked for drink orders and if we wanted a physical menu or could scan the QR code. There are two large flat screen TVs: one had a baseball game and other had photos of sushi rolls. There was background music playing & plenty of decor on the wall. Jay (the owner) is the "Itamae", chef making fresh rolls. He is definitely skilled in his craft & a perfectionist at making high-quality sushi for his guests. Staff was on point, checking in with guest frequently. I ended up with the California Roll (Surimi crab, cucumber, avocado), Spicy Tuna Roll (Spicy tuna w/cucumber), & Crunchy Bay Roll (Bay lobster mix, avocado, cream cheese, roll panko tempura served with surimi crab, wrapped in cucumber w/eel & cajun sauce). All was delicious! My mom had the seaweed salad & miso soup. The soup was hot & fresh, as well as the crunchiness of the seaweed salad. I'd had Makitto on my bookmarked list for quite some time and finally had the chance to try it before a movie date since it's right next to Cinemark. Service was friendly but a bit slow; there were only two servers for a full house, so it was a lot of waiting around and trying to flag someone down when they weren't carrying an armful of dishes. Food came out decently quickly and was piping hot, which is always a plus. Agedashi tofu: The tofu itself was expertly fried, with light crispiness around the outside and silky texture on the inside. I thought the size of the tofu was on point, as I find that this dish is often served with tofu chunks that are too big. I also appreciated that the sauce came on the side for dipping or self pouring so that the tofu didn't lose its crispiness. The sauce itself lacked some flavor and I added in some soy sauce to taste. Hamachi kama: This appetizer interestingly came with a small side of salad and at first I wasn't a big fan of the presentation. But once I tasted the salad, I was blown away. It was so delicious and well paired with the ponzu dressing, and I thought it served as a nice palate cleanser in between bites of hamachi kama. The yellowtail collar itself was well cooked wfh crispy skin that had been de-scaled (it sucks when the scales are left on). I could have used a tad more salt, but the overall flavor was good and the meat was really juicy. Sushi rolls: I didn't find the two rolls I sampled particularly memorable. They weren't bad, but I preferred the two appetizer dishes I tried over the rolls. The Katana roll was nicely presented but on the bland side, and the Monster roll was a bit heavy on the unagi sauce. I might drop by Makitto again for convenience if I'm the area, though I'd try to come during happy hour and likely stick with the appetizer dishes. read more

Ordered the fried rice almost choked on the shell from the shrimp and I was told "oh that's how they cook it" I told them they should at least warn the customer. The sushi was really good but our service lacked. Our table was sticky, I wasn't asked if I wanted a refill at all. From my understanding, working in food industry for many years, the customer shouldn't have to ask for a refill, but the server should be on top of the customers drinks. If a customer has to ask, they're not paying attention. My miso soup was less than half way full. My husband said that's because they probably use a ladle and that size ladle is all you get. He was a chef for many years. He says if the head chef thinks they're giving too much soup out and is getting at them about portion sizes, that could be why I got so little, still it was rather disappointing. It was also not very warm. My salmon skin roll was amazing, and the other roll I got, I forgot to take a picture, but it was called the lollipop roll and it was gigantic and delicious. Like almost too big. It was wrapped in cucumber instead of seaweed. The other two rolls were good also. The green tea ice cream was really good. I guess they make it in house. Beware they put chocolate syrup on it tho! So if you don't want it, ask! I don't like it with my green tea ice cream, I feel like it drowns out the flavor of the matcha. Over all, the food was pretty great, the service definitely needed some improvement. I know people can have their off days. Our server wasn't by any means rude or neglectful, just not attentive at all. Didn't ask if we needed anything extra, we found ourselves needing to ask more than we should have had to. read more
