I wanted to try this place because of their "good" reviews. However, it was NOT a good experience. And if I could I would give them 0 stars. They only have 4 tables. Music was loud and service was bad. Almost 1.5hrs after we arrived we were still waiting for our sushi rolls. All of a sudden, the manager/owner (?) comes to our table acknowledging it has been too long of a wait for our food. And while we were still waiting for our food she offered "MORE FOOD" to make up for the long wait. Why would we want more food if we were still waiting for the food we ordered 1.5 hrs earlier????? Then she offered some "sake" instead, but I didn't want drinks.... I just wanted our food to be served. Even after she acknowledged that we waited too long, we finally started getting our food one by one. I really wish we would have left like the people at the table next to ours did. Immediately after serving us the last dish we ordered, the waitress showed up with the check (I did not ask for it) and she didn't even ask if we wanted something else.... And not even a discount to make up for the wait and bad service!!!!! I'm never going back.... I can understand sometimes there are delays, but the interaction with the manager/owner (?) and the fact that she did not offer any discount says a lot about how she takes care of the clients. Tried out this place since reviews was pretty high. Let's just say this place is really small. It looks like only two people work and most people do take out or delivery from this place. When I first came in, it was a weird vibe to be honest because where we sat, the table was a mess and he didn't come by to clean the table right away since he was assisting with other customers. I didn't get the menu, plate, or utensils until I had to ask for one. But when it came to the food, the food is absolutely amazing. It's a bit high on the price since it's not AYCE but it was still awesome to try. I had white tuna (ono), salmon roe (ikura), and cheese man (special roll) while my boyfriend had the bento box with crunchyroll, shrimp tempura, and salad. The nori tastes very fishy and the eel sauce was different from any other place I've been. They don't have shrimp sauce & the rolls are priccyy but you do get a good size roll. Amazing sushi rolls! My boyfriend and I decided to do a casual date on a Saturday afternoon. We like trying new sushi places, especially ones close enough to walk to! The exterior looks like a small, run down mom and pop sushi place. It's not what I would generally go for on a date. The interior on the other hand was really nice. Loved the art and aesthetic as a whole! The sushi was delicious! They have some very creative, intricate rolls - although a bit more expensive than usual. They did have happy hour for various items on the menu, but all the good stuff is not included! We tried the Lychee Sake and it was amazingly smooth! Also very strong..! I will be completely honest. This is my first time here and I ordered it over the phone and picked up. I wasn't greeted when walking in, and the place was understaffed. I was told 40min and upon arrival which was an hour I was told 5-10min more. I paid and waited outside kept looking in too see if someone would flag me, if you're asking why I was outside - the place had limited seating and there was a good 50% capacity. I walked in 15min later and asked if m order was ready & the guy looked around and asked the sushi chef is it ready and he said YES and gave me look of irritation!!! The food was OK but not a sushi watering OMG I want more - it was a basic I could've got from 7-11 LOL! Where to start.? So when we walked in we got stared at without a hello. Stood there for a minute before being offered a table in a hallway by the bathroom. We weren't happy about it but all the other 4 tables were taken and this is a tiny place. Still not the end of the world but that's just where it started. The menus were filthy and so was the table. We sat for about 10+ minutes before the server came and greeted us. He advised us they were out of soft drinks and tea so the only thing they had to offer was water and alcohol. Pretty much that's where the service ended. After the server brought us drinks he never came back. We had the sushi chef finally come over and ask us if we needed anything. We ordered 2 handrolls and got the wrong rolls when they finally came out. We didn't have napkins, soy sauce, chop sticks, wasabi, refill on water, etc... We took anything we could off the one table next to us in the hallway. This place was dilapidated and run down. Dirty, holes in the walls, and exposed circuit breakers. I used to love this place. I used to recommend it to people. When it opened back up after pandemic, I returned to support. Things felt different there immediately, but I still kept going. Brought a friend here for the first time tonight, along with my song and husband. We showed up at 8:39 a.m. I pulled up to the front and one of the servers immediately turned the sign off. They are supposed to close at 9. We came starving from an event and ready to eat and drink. If you wanted to close early, set closing to 8:30 p.m. I will not be returning. How do you base your opinion of a restaurant? I mean, if you dislike something you eat, is it the chef's fault for not cooking it properly? Or is it your fault for ordering it and not something more familiar or safer in the first place? Maybe when I had Chicago-Style pizza in the Windy City, that wasn't really how it was supposed to be served and every 'authentic' shop I eat at here in San Diego is the true way to eat Chicago-Style. I say this because when you eat sushi (at least, when I eat sushi), you generally order enough food to stuff a good sized horse. And unless you have a thing for just Philadelphia Rolls, you'll probably get 5+ different things every time you sit at the bar. Normally I would think it's a good thing, getting a nice and rounded taste of their menu as opposed to judging a whole restaurant on a single plate of Linguine with Clams. Then I ate at Sushi4Reel. Right through the door, I have to admit that I loved the decor. It's painted in deep blue colors, gorgeous artwork, decorated with anime, and they have a constant stream of techno music softly pumping; it's not for everyone, but it was definitely for me. The space is small, with limited seating, but they make the most of it and we sat our group of seven inside. We started with the Jalapeño Poppers, which were absolutely disgusting. I love this dish in other venues, but here the jalapeños were small, making the crab meat inside cook to the point where it tasted like lukewarm cat food after frying. Mix in the fact that they weren't packed together well, falling apart when they hit the table, and we were not off to the best of starts. Then we had the Reyes Roll and, holy fucking shit, did we all lose our god damned minds! When we saw the ingredient list up on the 'specials' board, all of us agreed that it was a must-have. It was delicious blend of flavors, from the sweetened crab meat inside, to the warm shrimp tempura alongside it, to the crispy bits coated in a nice and spicy mayo with a drizzle of a mild salsa verde all along the top. This thing was absolutely amazing and completely put the thought of those poppers out of my mind. And if we had stopped there, this would be a five star review all the way. But, what followed was a healthy mix of pretty damn good to 'why-did-you-order-that'? Onion Blast: Very good, but could stand for a bit more of those onion straws on top as well as something sweeter inside to contrast with the saltiness of the fry on those onions. Salmon and Tuna Sashimi: One of my favorite dishes and it was not that great here. The salmon was neither cool nor buttery sweet. Not horrible, but not brilliant like I'd hoped. Bruce Lee: Basically a dragon roll with spicier crab meat ... oh, I get it! Crunchy Roll: Not bad, better elsewhere. Super Homeless: Excellent roll, a nice sourness to the fish inside and the thing was massive as it was coated with crab, mayo, and avocado. Sometimes it's good to be homeless. Reel Lemon - Good on paper, but this one was a true and odd misfire at the table. The sour of the lemon slices overpowered pretty much everything. Summer Break - I think I was the only one at the table that really loved this roll. That same tasty and natural sour to the fish, a heavy roll with plenty going on on top, coated in a warm mix of melted butter, spice, and garlic. It may rub some the wrong way, but I personally loved it. Hamachi Kama - Pretty good, it was especially a bit with my four year old son who asked for a second serving for himself. Salmon Skin Salad - Beautiful to look at and I very much enjoyed the sweet crisp to the skin in the bites I had. California Roll - Again, for my toddler son, it was well made with a good color and nice technique. Always things you want to see from the simplest and most basic of rolls. In the end, we all ate our fill and walked away impressed and happy. I was glad I bookmarked this spot after seeing it pop up in my Yelp feed so many months ago. It'll be tough coming back up here when we live in Encinitas, but I probably wouldn't say 'no' if I'm ever back in the neighborhood. read more

Came here because of the reviews but was sadly a little let down. The place looked very cute and hip from photos but it was much smaller than expected. Prices are decent and the combo options seem like a very good deal. When first walking in, we were told to sit at any table but were not given menus for about 5-10 minutes. When ordering, I asked for the sauce on the side for my sushi order but the chef accidentally still added it on the sushi. They offered to make me a new one but I declined. The sushi overall tasted very bland. Without the soy sauce or ginger there would have been very little flavor. Our server was very nice overall. This is the best sushi in the tri-city area. I'm new-ish to the area and had to find a sushi spot. Happened to try Sushi4Reel the second day in town. It was incredible. On par with my with my previous favorite sushi spot. Went on to try another 6 spots around here over the next few months. 2 in Oceanside, 2 in vista, and 2 in Carlsbad. I still went back to Sushi4Reel after each one because it satisfied my craving while the others didn't. Since the trials, this is and will be, the only place I go. Happy Hour is on point. After months and dozens of great visits and to go orders something has changed. Perhaps the veil has been lifted and the flaws been revealed, my rose colored glasses have been removed. Near the eve of their 1 year. My last 3 visits have all been to go orders. 2-4 rolls/items. Since I usually get Pho/burritos for my family it's a 1 stop pickup and I know Sushi takes longer, so I'll order here, go to the liquor store for general nick nacks/snack/drinks, then go to Mr. Pho/Mi Asador. Forget about coming here on a weekend unless you are solo, there are people waiting 25 minutes for a party of 2. It's small so the tables that are 2+ end up with spare seats. This is going on while I'm waiting for my food and I feel bad for the other patrons. I have even had time to drive home, drop food off, put away groceries and then come back to still wait (after ordering with a buffer from nearby places). This gets me thinking, 2 chef's, back of the house cook(s). How is it that other places with much bigger seating's are cranking out sushi faster. Now I'm really diving into the menu. Salmon ball (cold rice puck with 3 sashimi pieces of salmon wrapped around it topped with salmon roe. Why does the name sound so good (no description of course), yet it's totally flat, bland, not even that acidic bite from sushi rice. Flowers again sound really interesting, same thing, sashimi wrapped pucks of cold rice topped with scallops (which by the way had the additive taste that not even a spicy sauce could mask). I mean I guess it's a solid amount of fish, but really boring in flavor, unbalanced and not worth either price or flavor. Unagi bowl, about twice what it should be, the sauce doesn't accentuate things. The website is basic, can't even zoom on iphone or android browsers, the pictures which I once thought were quirky just seem childish. Black background with thin red font color means its more difficult to read and any graphic designer will tell you that. The décor which I once thought artistic now seem distracting. I'm not going to chop them too hard because they still have solid items, just not these. You sort of just have to know what those are as I've had the whole menu. Fried octopus legs to me are just a better take on the usual calamari you'll see. Yellowtail kama combo is legit. The bowls are a little over priced, but I really like the chirashi bowl. Vibrant, contrasting. I still like their shrimp tempura rolled items. Special plates are also excellent. Unless I'm ordering certain items and I've got no plans I'll probably be going elsewhere for my solo needs and if my window isn't 90 minutes. read more

Found Sushi4Reel when looking for Ramen for delivery (checked Doordash, Uber eats, etc) and this was one of the only options so decided to give it a shot. Ordered 6 ramens (chicken, tri tip and veggie) and spent $80 total for not one of us to eat it. It was a chilly night and my entire group was craving some good, warm ramen and were left hungry and in complete disappointment. One of my friends (who can literally eat anything) wouldn't even eat it because it was so gross it made us sick to look at. There was no "liquid" or toppings, just the meat and noodles which were very slimey and almost covered in a gravy. I'm shocked they can even call this ramen. You think you've had all the sushi dishes he has, but you haven't until you tried his because he elevates all sushi dishes to another level.
