OK sushi. I have had better sushi but I think this place is cheaper than most other sushi joints.

Date of Visit: 3/23/2016 Time of Visit: 1:15 pm Sushi4Reel popped up in my feed last night and made a point of visiting for lunch today. Early afternoon on a weekday and there were surprisingly several other customers. A good thing for a restaurant, not so good if you want to take photos without being obvious. :) It's a smaller restaurant that can fit about 20 people (guessing). But it's clean and the tables have a cool lacquered finish. The two paintings on the wall are seriously amazing. The one closest to the door might be wallpaper. Lighting is excellent, so much so that the overhead lights give off serious glare when taking photos. A giant white board pf lunch specials is outside. And there are additional lunch specials in the menu. Lunch specials are offered from 11:30 to 2:30 pm. Border patrol roll (salmon, shrimp tempura, crab, onions, some type of lemon and onion sauce). Large pieces of fresh salmon made this a good choice. DH would order this again but "there's so many other rolls I want to try first." Hamachi nigiri: LOVE good hamachi and Sushi4Reel nailed it! Super fresh, silky melt in your mouth, yes, this is how sushi is done. Tuna nigiri: a little tough and not as flavorful as other places. :( Hoping this was just a one-off vs a regular occurrence. Masgo nigiri: lots of eggs, great color, and perfect. No salty taste. The nigiri was prepared in long thin slices. And the sushi rice was perfect without any vinegar aftertaste. Yakisoba: Tasty but a bit sweet. More flavorful than other yakisobas we've had with an interesting spice, maybe nutmeg. The owner said they use a prepared yakisoba sauce so he wasn't sure what was in it. Menu Lunch special: Yellowtail cheek meat, rice, miso soup, and salad. A lot of food and a good lunch value. Perfectly cooked yellowtail cheek. The techno pop music playing in the background fits with the decor. Service is OUTSTANDING. The owner and his staff are EXTREMELY attentive. He came around to all the tables multiple times asking how things were. And never once did our water glasses get halfway. Prices are a little higher but the quality of the fish and service make up for it. Tip: Parking is extremely limited. But that whole strip mall is a mess. Parking is never good. And then when you factor in school pickup and drop off, it's a nightmare. So plan ahead. Avoid from 2pm to 3pm. read more

The blacked out windows make this place look unassuming from the outside, and then you get inside. With the strobe-light like blinking lights and loud music, you feel like you've entered a club lol. The food is very good! I recommend the lunch specials. I like that the list of sushi rolls has a lot of choices without krab. The fish is fresh, some rolls have real crab, and the teriyaki chicken is white meat and very lean. The service is pleasant. Honestly, the water cups are huge here and I actually had to stop my server from filling my cup a 3rd time! Quickie 1/2017 Update: Skip the 23$ eel bowl. Pricey for small bits of fish over tepid rice with too much eel sauce. Surprisingly the popcorn chicken and fries are nicely seasoned, though the a la carte pricing makes them quite spendy if ordered together. I went here for the first time recently and it was amazing!! I got the boarder patrol roll and my dad got the tempura California roll. Both were absolutely fantastic! The music was a little loud but I enjoyed the laid back vibes. I absolutely will be coming again 10/10 read more

Came in here 30 mins before close on "Good Friday" after church, as soon as I walked in everyone was very welcoming and my server was super sweet and didn't make me feel rushed at all. I ordered the "homeless" roll and it was AMAZINGGGGGGG! It was so good, I also ordered nigiri and asked them to give me their favorite; chef picked "Ono" and it definitely hit the spot! So so good! I really like the decor and ambiance of the place, it was a vibe for sure. 10/10 will recommend, can't wait to come back to try other stuff on the menu! read more

Popped in here for happy hour (see attached menu photo), and found we just had a few minutes before happy hour was over (we got to a LOT of happy hours FYI), so we ordered quick like. We had garlic edamame at the nearby Cafe de Thai & Sushi, and we hopeful it would be just as good here. Unfortunately, not quite. There, they used soy sauce with the garlic that gave it this sticky, salty sweet taste that was agonizingly good. At Sushi4Reel, it really is just minced garlic and edamame...$5.50. We also ordered Shrimp Tempura Roll ($4), two small Sapporo's ($3/each), a large hot sake ($5) and Fried Calamari ($5). All were okay. The shrimp tempura roll broke apart instantly after taking a bite. I think you gotta eat each piece whole to be successful here. The beer & sake were great...can't mess that up. The calamari was okay however my wife was not the fan. Perhaps sticking to the happy hour menu means sacrificing quality, so get the booze but maybe order off their bigger menu for non-HH items to boost the quality (assuming). It was really hot outside, so inside was also notably warm. It wasn't unbearable, but the restaurant is also REALLY TINY. I mean, there's literally like 4-5 tables, not including the 5 seats at the sushi bar. So, take note: you might not get a seat if you come at peak times. They seem to get a lot of to-go orders, which I think is a good sign. We will have to come back and try a regular roll, when it's not too hot outside and during a non-peak hour. Extra points for the techno/house music and Japanese anime-style decor. Loved it! I wish I could award more points, but I need to try it again then update my review accordingly. Sayōnara! read more

The tuna didn't look or taste fresh. Asked about the coloring of the tuna and was told that's the color for blue fin tuna. We were worried we would get sick so didn't enjoy the sushi like we normally do. We didn't get sick. read more

Honestly I don't know where to start. I was looking for a place to go get some Sushi with my Wife. I had searched for a place prior to coming to Sushi4Reel, but I ended up ultimately not going and thus bringing my wife and I here. Honestly, we had no regrets. When we arrived, we were told that anything handmade was going to take about 30 minutes and we didn't mind, especially since there was a big party before us. I also noticed that there was one person making rolls and can see why. As we were waiting on our orders, we were made sure everything was okay by 3 different employees. Gyoza 5 piece Yellowtail (butttterrrrrr) Fiesta Bliss (my absolute favourite) Reel Lemon Superhomeless Caterpillar x2 We did end up getting our orders around 30 minutes, give or take. And might I say, these rolls were quite the eye candy. They were the cleanest, rolls I have ever seen in terms of sauces, toppings, and even the colouration of it all. I enjoyed my sushi and though, "You can tell this person really put in their love and passion into their craft." As we kept getting our rolls, it was the SAME CONSISTANCY over and over. Clean presentable dishes not overflowing with sauce or toppings. Taste was great and balanced. Not too much of filler (of said rolls), not too sweet from sauces but not bland AT ALL. The balance was quite nice and we were not skimped on our protein. Though real Wasabi is rare and hard to get, fresh "Wasabi" or Horseradish, was actually really good. I had a pea size chunk and didn't suffer from it all. My wife got her Caterpillar roll and her eyes lit up. She thoroughly enjoyed it so much that I had asked her if she wanted another and she did ecstatically. My wife actually ended up finishing both her rolls, in which I have never seen her done before. She also ate some of my rolls' toppings as well. Might I say, I was please with turning the previous restaurant down and choosing to go here. I asked if the Sushi Chef was the owner even though I had a hunch, and it was. I told him that I appreciated his craft and can tell that he really put his damn soul, into his work. You don't see many people like this often. He worked an hour straight from the time that we were there with a quick minute water break. You got to give it to him. Making rolls by himself, with approximately 15 people in-house. He's trying to get rolls done nice and neat as fast as he can for everyone with the same consistency while being clearly understaffed. Not to mention he physically replies on his yelp reviews, and doesn't use a automated c&p. That's fucking loving what you do right there folks. Enough said. Lastly, about the pricing...I'm going to talk about this only because I saw other reviews. If you're going to get sushi, PERIOD, don't expect it to be "cheap" or "cheaper". This place is 5 star. It's been tough to survive and I want to support this guy end to end. But last 3 times I have hair in my rice for the kids. In the special rolls same some long ones. He needs to watch the last dance as I know he has...and get it right. Hair nets and masks if he wants to recover. read more

Girlfriend and I went on a Tuesday afternoon, our first time there. Started with the Gyozas, they were hot, delicious and most importantly crunchy! We then had the Micky, Super Homeless and and Rainbow rolls. Micky- if you love spicy mayo, you'll love this roll. A bit too much for my taste. Super Homeless- the warm soft shell Crab topping was flavorful and paired nicely with the roll. Rainbow Row- tasted great but the texture of the avocado was mushy (overripe). The flavor of the roll was on point. Finished the meal with a Yellowtail hand roll and it was delicious. Service was great, courteous and attentive. We'll be going back! read more

Hello North County Restaurants! I'm Nette B. from Nette.yelp.com and I dined at your restaurant. Stumbled across Sushi4Reel because the neighboring restaurant I wanted to go to was closed. :( This sushi bar is not big so you might have to wait for a table. We came here during lunch and ordered the following the lunch bento box Beef Teri and Salmon. The beef was soft and tender but that's about it that I liked. The salad dressing was meh and the tempura was downright oily. The sushi roll in our bento box was just alright. It's unfortunate that I didn't find this place to be outstanding. I've eaten at a lot of sushi restaurants and some of the best in SD and I wanted to like this place since it's close to my work. read more

5 stars every time. Excellent rolls. So many sushi places have rolls that are only a little different from each other. Here, each is its own flavor. Huge flavor thats layored. All made with passion and pride. A must is the ginger to clean your pallet between rolls.-most people do not know that. That is what is for. Because the rolls vary so much some may not pair if you do not clean pallet first. Always look at the special board on the wall!!! They also offer "true fresh" Wasabi A large Asahi a couple rolls and you are set! Some Saki shots work also! read more

very AMERICAN-style rolls slathered with sweet soy, spicy mayo and crunchy bits but with an attitude. details are going to be sketchy (sorry, we were a party of seven) and the menu on their website is more invested in being cool than informative. fish was fresh and rolls were very inventive. much wider and wilder selection than your average sushi bar. some of the "old" standards (JALAPENO POPPERS, ONION BLAST, BRUCE LEE and CRUNCHY) were good (but not as good as HOOKED ON and MIKKO's) and a couple times their reach exceeded their grasp (REEL LEMON). the SUPER HOMELESS was on par but the REYES roll was unique, at least in my experience, and amazing. on the fence will the SUMMER BREAK -- which was sauced with melted butter ... HAMACHI KAMA (which was fried not grilled) was tasty enough we got two. the SALMON SKIN SALAD was stunning visually with lots of crispy skin but missed the miso and toasted sesame oil flavors in the dressing. not sure i'd drive past all the other places between here and there but next time i'm in the neighborhood, definitely worth stopping in. read more

This place is a gem! My hubby and I tried the money shot off the secret menu and were beyond impressed! But wait there was more! They brought out the super homeless roll and it blew our minds with a fusion of what tasted like buffalo sauce! Great combination we've never had before. There was also the New Mexico which chef Joon made for us with a habanero sauce with just the right kick! Our last try was the onion blast for anyone who loves crunchy string onions with yellow tail this was a winner! I would gladly give the ambiance a 5 Star as well and very friendly staff! This place was an absolute gem tucked away in a strip mall in east Oceanside. Service was excellent and only surpassed by the quality of the sushi. Only downside is the place is pretty small, so get there early to avoid the lunch/dinner crowds. Can't wait to go there again! read more

This place is incredibly loud and tiny. Only has like 4 tables. It took foreverrrrrr to get our food. The owner and the chef and waiter were standing behind the counter just talking and drinking beer for quite some time. The food was ok. Nothing particularly good or bad to say about it, but the service was terrible. We waited nearly an HOUR to get our food and there was literally only 3 other tables ordering. At one point the owner came over to our table and tried chatting with us about running a business and was clearly a little inebriated. The chef wasn't wearing a mask either which was a huge turnoff for us during covid. The table was sticky too. Overall just not a great place to go sit down and have sushi. Forget about trying to talk to the person across the table from you with how loud the music was cranked up. Maybe a to go order would be alright but honestly there's so many other places to go, it's just not worth it for us after the experience we had. read more

I RARELY leave reviews for places I eat at but this one deserves it Definitely a hidden gem. I'm from an area in LA where GOOD sushi is all over the place. But this place takes the crown for unique for sure. Ordered: 1. Garlic Edamame - very flavorful and almost wanted to have the sauce with a bowl of white rice 2. Marvin Roll - very tasty combination of salmon 3 ways, all on one roll. I liked how much salmon there was too 3. John Snow Roll - AMAZING! The flavor combinations were so good. I honestly don't know how people are giving this place such high star reviews. The first thing is I went with my daughter and we sat at the bar. The first 2 rolls we ordered came and one of them was not completely as described..:. It was to have ikura on top and it came with tombiko. I asked the chef and he said oh sorry I didn't tell you but we are out of ikura so i put the tombiko. I wish they would have asked if I wanted the roll still or if it was ok to substitute before making the roll. We then order a couple more rolls and I have to say the rice was WAY OVER COOKED. It was like paste and not very editable. So I could tell it was not worth complaining or sending it back we simply ate the inside and left the rice and seaweed. I also asked for some gobo and was told they did not have any either. But to top off our experience some of the pricing in the menu is different then what was on my bill so i had to have them fix it. This was our second time here so far. It is a smaller 4 table place right now since the bar seating is closed, but both times we've been the service has been great and so kind. The gyoza are the the best I've had in the area so far, as well as the sushi. VERY good. Everything tastes fresh and leaves your belly full! Came here only because my wife was craving her sushi fix and we were close by. It was like . . . "LOOK!!! Turn in here, I want SUSHI!!!" So that's how we ended up at Sushi4Reel. 4REELZ, dats how it went down. California roll and shrimp tempura IS her sushi fix. Anyway, I chose the nigiri sampler. Shrimp tempura was the first dish to arrive. Less than 5 minutes, should that have been a cause for concern??? Well, the tempura was not crispy and the shrimp was very ... Karai (salty). You can see by the picture that it was oily. "Aji ga yokunai" I'm really not a big fan of California roll but the piece I did have was better than most other places. The consistency and temperature of the rice was just right. The nori ... The nori was crispier and had a lot more flavor than other sushi restaurants. I always try to order a mix of nigiri to see and taste the quality of their fishes. The tuna was NOT frozen (imo) as the texture and color implies FRESH. Although my tuna was on the warm-ish side. I prefer my "Raw" anything to be served a little chilled. The rice to fish ratio was good. Wasabi was not added to any of my nigiri. Salmon was exceptional. All good except for the ... Shrimp. Very thin slice, the kind of slice you get from a part tray. Maybe stay away from anything shrimp. Would have been nice for the price of nigiri sampler to include miso soup or green tea. If ever in the neighborhood and craving "MY" fix, I'll be coming for the tuna & salmon nigiri ... 4REELZ! Hahaha read more

This is my first choice when I'm craving sushi! My son and I like to grab Friday night dinner here occasionally.

Good service but unnatural taste to the sushi and the ingredients inside. Nothing about the sushi tasted fresh.

Super delicious! We could tell they were understaffed, but the food and drinks were delicious and the staff was very friendly. Yum!

We branched out of the usual sushi place and found Sushi4Reel. The place is super small but fun. Service was excellent and fast. The sushi rolls were very very good! It is on the pricey side, well at least the rolls that we ordered (for 4 rolls- bill came to almost $70 bucks).
