I've been hearing about this place for 2 years. I currently live in Colorado and made the trip down this weekend, specifically to eat here. We got there 5 minutes after it opened and the restaurant was already half full with people still pouring in. We ordered a ton of food and though it took a bit longer, we actually enjoyed how our food trickled in for us to share and eat, drink, and talk. Made for an experience. We also had kids with us and I was surprised by the kid entree and the price. Well worth it to bring the youngins. The sushi was delicious, fresh, and flavorful. Some of the rolls mixed with the green chili were my favorite, a mix of two cultures that paired so well. We left so satisfied!!! Can't wait until our next adventure to Taos! Three of us arrived at 5 and there was already a line to get in. Started with the aji daji (sp) broth with crispy tofu, so delicious. Mexican roll and several other items. Sat at the bar and watched as our food was made. The servers were attentive and all was good. Will go again. read more

Take a look at the sushi chef's workspace before you dare to ingest his sushi. Disgusting. The messiest workspace I've seen in quite some time. And I've seen some bad ones. The food is good enough (though I just ate a tempura appetizer that was woefully overcooked), but the service is consistently appalling. I've tried repeatedly to support this business, but they've made it clear that they just don't care! Awful service for dine in, as well as take out. Didn't have an item that I had ordered and they didn't bother calling me - 45 minutes later when I went to pick up my order, I had to sub it for something else and wait another half an hour! Not a lot of sushi options in Taos, but you're honestly just better off going to the grocery store to save time and money. read more

The service is usually slow but the the food is solid. I am giving this place a 5 star to balance out some of other unfair reviews. I've been here a few times now. The food has always been great. My favorites are the nigiri combos, the sunrise (caterpillar) roll, the steamed mushrooms, and the spicy salmon special maki. I usually have to get up to ask for a refill or for the check. But hey, there is nothing better than ending a stressful day with Mountain Views, sushi, and whimsical Taos-y art installations. read more

What a welcome delight to find a delicious and authentic casual Japanese restaurant in Taos. I tried Chicken Katsu bento box, as well as a roll... both were great! Mr Hattori works hard in the kitchen, and his sushi chef has been there for 17 years--does amazing work as attested by the photos here--please look at them, they taste as good as they look! So lucky to have this place here and enjoy a break from Mexican food (which I love also). read more

I went on tonight one hour before closing to place a takeaway order ( after calling for 15 minutes with no answer) I was turned away because they were busy, What really upset me was the way it was handled, I was told " no were too busy" and the 2 waitresses stand at the front both immediately turned their backs to me. What happened to customer service and kindness? I would have happily accepted this answer if perhaps I was told "we're so sorry we're just too busy to complete your order before closing time (7:30pm REALLY? On a FRIDAY night?). I agree that their sushi is great. Probably the best I have had in NM. They have never had good service in the 10 years I have visited. My experience today wasn't great including a long wait, forgotten drinks, super sticky sushi rice etc etc. However, the servers were nice and seemed to try their best. Today, though, I was blown away by the rudeness of the owner. The table of 4 next to us *who was there before us* got one dish before my food came out. By the time I was done eating, the table still hadn't received the rest of their order. After at least an hour of waiting, they told the waitress they were going to pay for what they ate/drank and will leave. One of the ladies complained to the owner and the owner doesn't apologize, says if they don't like it then don't come back. If your staff made a mistake, then apologize. Hands down my favorite place to eat! My husband comes from a fishing family in Alaska, and even he agrees the fish and sushi quality here are top-notch. The bad reviews honestly make me laugh because they're a clear reflection of how entitled some people can be. The wait staff is fantastic, and if they get to know you, they'll always do their best to accommodate you. That said, this isn't a place for large parties. If you arrive right when they open, they'll seat you if they have room and the means to do so, but don't expect them to rearrange the entire restaurant for a big group. They're incredibly busy from the moment they open to the moment they close. If you want to eat here, get there when they open and know what you want! This isn't the place to linger over your order or add things later. If you're going to complain about how long it takes to make sushi rolls, I'd love to see you try making them yourself at home. 10/10, always worth it! read more

I was not impressed with this place at all... Service is slow... The best item they had was the house salad... Sushi was soggy... And being ignored by the cashier for half an hour made it impossible to pay and get out quickly.. If it's an emergency to find sushi in this small little town.. We went to Sushi a la Hatori last night to celebrate our grand daughter who was leaving for college. We are long time Taos residents. We sat down at our outside table at 6:00. We were a party of 6. It was a lovely evening. The sake and tempura was delicious as a first course; served around 6:30. We were having a great time with much laughter. Around 6:45 we began to wonder where the rest of our order was. We asked the very busy waitress. "Soon", "you're next" was her curtly answer. That was the same answer at 7:00 and at 7:15. There was no apology, no eye contact, no food! I went and asked the chef. He said we were next. We watched diners come and go. Finally at 7:45 one more dish arrived. Again, no apology, no explanation. At 8:00 another dish appeared. By now, we were all hungry and tired. My grandson had loads of home work to get to. Our granddaughter was teary from hunger. The kicker was when my husband went inside to pay the bill. We had been treated so poorly he asked for a discount; enumerating all the ways we were treated so poorly. There was no acknowledgement or even just a "thank you for your patience". So, we arrived at 6:00 and got our main courses at 8:00! This place is known to have great food and horrible service. I, my daughter-in-law, and my grandson have been involved in food service jobs. We were appalled. Not one kind word. Not one bit of generosity. The waitress only scowled. The entire crew needs some "hospitality" training. The chef threatened us and whined about how hard he works. My suggestion; hire some good trained help! Good food be damned. It was really bad. The wait was one and half hour long. The server gave us water 10 mins after I sat down. I was keep waiting but no one refill the water nor did they check with me. After waiting for one and half after, I wish to leave but the owner kept saying they made the food and cannot cancel the order. This is definitely the best sushi in New Mexico. It is also a truly family-run Japanese establishment with a Sushi chef who is obviously classically trained. Some folks complain about the slow service here. I would suggest they check out a fast food joint rather than dissing a true local, family-run treasure. I have eaten in many world class sushi restaurants from Japan to California. I have to give this tiny joint a solid A for their high quality Japanese food. Be patient and nice to the staff, you will be rewarded with good food. I am very thankful for their presence here in Taos. read more

This place is better beyond Taos. I see many bad reviews here but they are inaccurate. The place is known for its great cuisine, not its american style fast service or their "customer is always right" mentality. That's what makes Hattori GREAT! If you don't like it, don't come back. I had spotted several shops and in the back of this sweet little flower garden, here hid this fun little Sushi place. When you first arrive, you are asked if you want to sit inside or out. If weather is good and bugs are not out, sit outside, the view and fresh air, are unreal! Items tried: ~ Mexican roll - very tasty 92/100 ~ Yellow tail sushi - really fresh 96/100 ~ Red snapper - 96/100 I could not believe that there is the freshest sushi in Taos, NM! Beef teriyaki is the best dish on the menu, hands down!!! It came with fresh vegetables, a chunk of fresh watermelon and sliced cheese potatoes, and the beef was buried in the most delicious sauce. The sake was really good and the beers were ice cold. Edamame was ok, needed more salt. The sushi was meh...honestly we've gotten better sushi from Smith's and Albertsons. The sushi is incredible. How they get fish this fresh in the mountains in a landlocked state is pure sorcery (though I've often thought the same about Cid's). Our experience at Sushi A La Hattori was unbelievable. Even with our highest hopes, we did not expect the fish to be so fresh and delicious. We sat at the bar and we're greeted promptly with drinks and smiles. The Sushi chef was very knowledgable and helpful. The fish melted in our mouths at the perfect temperature. There was something for both my partner and I, as we have relatively different tastes. My boyfriend likes spicy, innovative sushi and I love the classics and there was something for each of us. This has become my favorite spot to dine; and it's a true taste of Japan. I am amazed at the quality of seafood they are able to secure. I've worked my way through the menu and the black cod stands out as my favorite dish, but I've never been disappointed with any order. The tuna chips are unique. Drink choices are plentiful, and my companions rave about the sake selections. I'm not a sake fan, but I enjoy their iced tea. They also have beer staples - Asahi and Sapporo. The owners and staff are always pleasant, and the clientele mostly local. Sitting outdoors adjacent to the wind sculpture garden is wonderfully relaxing. Though I am skeptical of the concept of fish in New Mexico I greatly enjoyed indulging in their dumplings, pork ramen and, always a winner, AGEDASHI TOFU! would highly recommend. The vibes were immaculate. We had a large party and were impressed with the ease of service. However, I will say that they could not do separate checks which was definetly a let down. We were leaving Taos ski valley and picked up a young lady hitch hiking to Arroyo Seco. She told us about this incredible sushi place. We decided to give it a try! Wow was it amazing! We sat at the sushi bar and we had to wait a little while for our sushi but boy it was worth the wait. It was very busy but the sushi was the best I've ever had. I have been recommending this restaurant to my vacation rental guests for years . I can no longer do that . I don't care how good the food is or if you have a Michelin star , you can't treat people badly or act like a money grubber . I came to the restaurant for a dinner and after waiting over 20 minutes , I was told they couldn't seat one person , they were going to seat a 2 person group that just arrived ahead of me , they told me I could eat at the small and over crowded bar , I could understand placing a group of 3 or 4 ahead of me and wait for a a 2 person table but 2 people who just came in !!! With all the choices of excellent restaurants in Taos , I will never eat here again ! Absolutely terrifying customer service experience: As I sit here inside this restaurant I am horrified by the lack of customer service skills. I absentmindedly brought my water bottle in here because I just came from an exercise class and when it was my turn to order I asked for water and the owner/waitress rolled her eyes at me and said "you got water!" Then she walked away and brought only my friend a water. She then rushed us to order as I'm looking at the menu and I told her I was not yet ready. She then told us to hurry because she was closing and literally other customers come in and she welcomes them in! I decided not to give this lady any of my money in the end and instead decided to write this review. All in all she was absolutely rude and it is sad that a restaurant I once loved has now made me no longer a customer and I will no longer be recommending hattori due to this absolutely awful treatment that I endured today. My friend and I arrived shortly after it opened for their dinner meal. I usually eat lunch there and not dinner. I ordered Pork Ginger & it had mayonnaise drizzled over it - totally gross. The salad was nothing like the lunch salad and also had mayonnaise drizzled over it...double gross. The meal was accompanied by rice, a melon slice and potato slices with cheese melted on it. This definitely didn't go well with the meal and in my travels around Japan I never saw a potato dish or anything with a milk product. The best part of the meal was the melon slice. My friend ordered a salad and sushi. It took them almost an hour to bring her the salad. She asked the waitress about it several times and was told it was almost ready...what a joke. Moved from Cali beachside and did not think Taos would have good sashimi let alone all items Japanese I crave always like agi-dashi tofu. Been once and had the sashimi platter. Was amazing of course I spoke with the sushi chef first as to what was fresh. He being very local looking I was a bit hesitant what I was served was better than most of my go to sushi bars in SM. Big pieces of fresh sashimi. Don't need to order spicy tuna here get the real thing. Folks say service is spotty. Don't care I will wait for quality at decent prices. Ok... so the old Asian lady is crazy... know this, be prepared. Also... the staff is all Spanish speaking and have no clue what the menu is about. Don't even ask. They know nothing. Everyone is pretty rude. And just expect that. If you can navigate past the rude staff and owners, your sure to get some good sushi. Just go for the tuna if u don't know what fish to get, tuna is the best. They have fish flown in from across the world. It's legit. One of the chefs is Mexican (he's good at what he does) but the HEAD chef is an old narly Japanese guy, so your in good hands. You know what to expect, the rest is up to you. Be patient.
