We were in the mood for sushi for our Friday night date night. It was kind of late and driving a great distance was not in the cards for me that night. South Suffolk, Va is not known for the best in restaurants but they have their select few. This location is a great go to when we just don't feel like traveling to far from home. Small intimate spot and great atmosphere. Parking can be a issue because it's located in the middle of downtown Suffolk, but it's worth the search. Now they are pricey compared to the other available sushi in the neighboring cities. Also the type of sushi is limited but still great flavors. Christina was our server and she was friendly, energetic, knowledgeable and very accommodating. We enjoyed the pork soup dumplings and two sushi rolls which we shared. This is definitely a local spot for those familiar with downtown Suffolk, I don't suspect many will travel to eat here but if you ever find yourself here and in the need of Sushi, they are worth the stop. read more

We live in Va Beach and we drove almost 40 mins to check out Sushi Aka. Why? Read all their rave reviews on Yelp and I had some friends already try it and they said it was really good so off we went this past Saturday. The head chef here is Mike who works behind the Sushi Bar cranking out some good eats. He was friendly and easy to talk to throughout our dinner experience. I made reservations for Omakase (they spell it Omegaze here) at the sushi bar. My experience with Omakase in the past at several different places follows this lineup: a couple of kitchen plates followed by delicious pieces of Nigiri (anywhere from 6 to 10 pieces or more). That is NOT the case for Omakase here at Sushi Aka. Instead we were served 6 different kitchen entrees which included: kanpachi, seared hamachi, torched toro chunks, beef tataki, salmon carpacio and grilled salmon with mashed cauliflower and mushrooms. All of these dishes were executed well and tasted amazing. The beef tataki was a bit on the colder side for my tastes though. After our "final" main course, the Sushi Chef asked if were still hungry and if we were, we can consider ordering a few other things off the menu (we were still hungry...) He recommended to get a sashimi platter so we opted for a small one which came with: octopus, salmon, chutorro, and a few other fish pieces that I don't recall. All of them were fresh and tasty but we really wanted some rice (nigiri). For dessert, we had this AMAZING fried wonton skin with blueberry mascarpone. I could eat this thing every night. It was flaky and crunchy and was just a delight to eat to end the meal. I would come back again but make sure we end up getting more nigiri instead of the Kitchen entrees. Side note: towards the end of our dining experience I did ask him why we didn't have any nigiri and he stated they do things a little differently at Sushi Aka and wanted to showcase other things they did instead. He did mention that if we wanted only nigiri to tell him that next time and he would give us price points on how much it could cost. I just wished this was a bit more clear when we ordered the Omakase at first(chef's choice). read more

Imagine ordering something and not even knowing half the things you're eating yet making uncomfortable "omg" and "MMMmmM" sounds at a table on the opposite side of a wall where most patrons sat (because your group was large). Yes, I went with the smaller sashimi plate. The only bad part was not having a list presented of what each fish was, so that I may request certain sashimi in the future. Every fish tasted delicious, almost buttery. Each bite was fantastic, and the sushi rice on the side was seasoned perfectly. Most of us at the table ordered the sashimi plate without octopus/tako. We shared some appetizers such as the special of the evening: Hamachi kama, which is the fatty collarbone of a tuna but juicy as heck! It almost melted in your mouth and didn't even have a fishy taste due to the sauces poured on top of it. The warm appetizer was gobbled up fairly quickly by the group. Warning, it does have fish bones in it, but not a lot and none of the bones we picked out were tiny. The second appetizer sounded incredibly questionable: tuna pizza. All I can say is, this is worth a try if you came with a group. It surprisingly works, and I'm not a big fan of "Asian fusion." The miso soup was too salty though. Perhaps a large pot was brewing all day and made it super salty, but opt for a salad if you eat here for dinner. I was told the miso soup tastes normal during lunch time. The ingredients are noticeably fresh here, so I understand why people travel 40 mins. to eat here. Parking isn't awful because Suffolk isn't a busy place, so you have time for maybe 3 mistakes on your parallel parking attempt. The prices reflect the quality of sushi, and it's worth it. read more

Have you ever had an experience where the server is just as amazing as the food?! Well, we had one such a night with one such a waiter! I could kick myself for not remember his name, but since he was the only male waiter on a busy Friday night, I will just have to call him, "the amazing waiter from Gates". He knows who he is, and hoping that all you amazing yelpers out there tip those hard working waiters who make your night that much better...and for the ones that just shine...like ours did last night...go above and beyond to make their night just a little better...their working very hard as well to pay their bills also (maybe even harder)! I know I have spent a bit of time raving just about our waiter, but he deserves the accolades and is one reason we will be returning to this wonderful sushi joint. Aka Sushi from the outside may look like your typical main street sort of front...but step inside and you will see and experience such a cool eclectic feel that embraces the old but also celebrates the new by incorporating contemporary styles that make a person feel welcome, relaxed, and just that nice little wow factor of all that is good in this world. The chef is creating...and I do mean creating since the menu and sauces change all the time...and each item has his own personal touch that also shines and truly tickles the taste buds into longing for more of aka sushi's creations. Honestly, I am not even a sushi person...and for a person who isn't even into sushi, I still found a jillion and one options on the menu that actually left me wanting to come back and try the other things I didn't get a chance to try...and with an ever changing menu, I will probably never run out of new dishes to try! It was a long week, and this later dinner out with my husband was exactly what I needed....I didn't realize it at first...but in the moment at this eatery, all the delicious culinary delights I experienced and all the wonderful service and talk with our waiter made for a perfect night out! I have been to this gem three times already. I'm the past few weeks. I moved to HR 5 years ago and have ever since been looking for a good Sushi Restaurant. Good sushi is pricy. So don't read on if you enjoy "all you can eat". Nothing wrong with that. I sometimes do it but I am also a sushi connoisseur. There is another place in VB that's really good and also very pricey. There is a difference though. From the videos I have seen and some places I have experienced, the smaller, more intimate sushi scene restaurants are where it's at. Sushi is not just the food. It's the whole experience Chef Michael, who I believe has studied under a well known chef, creates a unique experience for every single customer. At least that's how I have felt the three times I've been. The experience is very personal -- and the fish is out of this world. Order some of the specials. Order Toro. Food is always great and there is diversity on the menu for those of us that don't eat raw fish. I am just starting this adventure and a very picky eater. The staff is very supportive of both experienced and inexperienced sushi eaters. I saw a review asking for hotter wasabi. Have you ever had their fresh wasabi? It is excellent and worth the price (IMO). I wondered about the expense until I researched wasabi root. I saw the review from Caroline L. and will guess that they were there on Sept 9th since review came in on Sept 10th. I was there on the same Saturday but did not complain about the children. The children were loud and distracting. Thank you to the customers that did speak up. Yes, kids will be kids and you did the right thing by leaving the restaurant. Don't confuse being upset with your children as the restaurant's fault. A few years ago, we were eating at the sushi bar. A grandfather had his grandson sitting at the bar with him. Not sure how everything transpired, but the Chef served the kid the ingredients and then assisted him in making a roll. That kid was all smiles. read more

I finally tried Sushi aka! I heard great things about this place for a year now and after kayaking in the great dismal swamp, I decided what better time then now? We walked in and the ambiance was nice and pretty. The hostess (I believe her name is Shelby) sat us immediately without a reservation and told us about Ladies Night. We got the Shiso Mojito and the Izanagi cocktails and the pork belly as an appetizer. We ordered the pickles because they make them in house. For our entrees we ordered the The Kelly and the Garden for me, Shrimp tempura, The Adam bomb, and the rockfish. Everything was delicious! 10/10 will definitely be back! Trying nearly every sushi joint in the area, Sushi Aka is clearly the best sushi restaurant in Hampton Roads. For starters, Aka is one of few HR joints that can correctly label their pieces as sushi, sashimi, and rolls... I went with the sushi pieces mainly. I ordered the tuna, kenpachi, uni, smoked tako, and a specialty tuna roll: The Adam Bomb. Each piece I tried was unbelievably tender and fresh. The smoked flavor of the octopus worked so well. The chef saved the uni for last as it was the last in the restaurant; it did not disappoint. The waitstaff was extremely nice and visited us regularly asking if we needed anything. My husband and I came here to see what all the hype was about this place. Of course, we were sushi snobs and had been spoiled before moving across country and thought to ourselves that maybe the locals didn't know any better when they wrote all of these voluptuous reviews, and we just had to see for ourselves. We were wrong, so very very wrong. This place was as fresh and clean and delicious as could be, and for that, we were so happy! Our server went above and beyond to spoil us. My only minor beef, which isn't really a beef, is the wasabi didn't feel like it was burning my sinuses, so I know that it's been modified to be less spicy for the faint of heart. The masochist in me loves the sensation of breathing fire, so if they have any reserves of fully potent stuff in back, I must find out! read more

I have set myself on a mission to find good Omakase sushi in Hampton Roads. Sushi Aka was second on my list. It's pretty far out! I have never stopped in downtown Suffolk. I think I have driven by a few times on my way to I95. It was dark when I went here, so I'm a bit unsure on parking, but I found a great spot on the street near the front. The inside of Sushi Aka is like a little pub or something. Then you notice the soy sauce and stuff, and realize it's sushi. There was a very steady group of regulars at the bar who seemed to love the place. My waitress was stellar and kind, though I think she didn't know what some of the things were, caused she called them the same thing when she brought the out. My rating is 3 / 5 stars, OK overall. The food quality was great, it's nice that they keep lots of quality sushi, like toto. But the omakase experience was not great. Some portions were giant. Nothing went together! Omakase is the chef's pick and it's supposed to take you on a journey through unique fish and flavors. This was more like a serving of their expensive dishes. I felt like I got my money's worth of fish, but it was terribly inconsistent, flavors didn't always go together. And, they had sushi pizza. Yes, sushi pizza. First course) a tuna tatami, tataki? It was good once i mixed together with a spoon to get the flavors going. Second course) The waitress called this carpacchio. It was a big portion. Not hot enough or cold enough. OK taste. Sauce was a bit oily. Third course) Um, tuna sushi pizza flat bread... it was OK once I dipped it in a bit of soy sauce. Big portion, way too much for one and way too much for the third of ?? courses. The tiny cilantro there was wonderful. The mayo sauce was unnecessary. Fourth course) Carpacchio again? Not sure the waitress was right on this one. It was sashimi with salad parts. Nice fish you don't get often. There is scored skin or flesh on top that gives it texture, but a fish that went so well with micro greens. Fifth course) An amazing Totoro (fatty tuna) roll and tuna sushi. The Ootoro sushi was yumm and chuutoro was yummy too, can't go wrong with super high quality tuna. The roll was tuna too, with different levels of sear on it was great. I only ate once piece of the roll cause I was so stuffed from the previous foods. I already had put some things aside since I had been getting full for a while. Sixth course) This was dessert ... mine was non dairy, per request. Strawberries with wonton. Another hugh portion but real nice taste. My mom does strawberries like that, where you cut them up and put sugar on them to marinade a bit. I think I will try Sushi Aka again, if I am in the area. But, not for the omakase. This is definitely a hidden gem! My fiance and stumbled on this place and we we surprise how good it was. Up trendy type restaurant and fairly priced. The best sashimi I had thus far after living 1.5 years in the Hampton Roads area. We had only the 8 piece sashimi sampler which was cut quite thinner than normal (but it's an appetizer version), but wow! It blew me away. Smoked octopus was tasty as well. I'm not a sushi fan (rolls) and more of sashimi fan, fit their rolls were pretty good. I love that they have different vegetables in the roll. The wasabi here taste almost real like the ones in Japan and not like the paste kind. This is a fusion type of sushi and other Asian cuisine with a dash of western touch. We drove 40-50 minutes to try this place for lunch. There is no parking, so you have to find the street parking. I ordered sushi lunch with miso soup. Water: taste like tap water Gen-mai-cha: not even hot/warm, it's actually cold...and I think they use tap water to make it, so it taste awful Miso soup: too salty for me, couldn't even finish it, should've got salad!! Sushi: at least their sushi was good. The balance of rice portion and sashimi portion are perfect. Wasabi taste fresh, not like some tube wasabi. They didn't have toro or squid. Before I had a chance to experience Sushi Aka I was following them on Instagram drooling over their fresh fish and beautiful rolls. I am hardly ever out in Suffolk but with COVID impacting so many small businesses I decided I couldn't wait any longer to give this place a try. I found two friends to go in on a platter with me, placed an order over the phone, and two days later made the trip to pick it up. Let me backtrack a little and say that when I called I didn't necessarily know what I wanted on the platter. I just knew that I wanted it. I was so lucky that Chef Michael Hart answered when I called because he worked with my likes, dislikes, and budget. He was so friendly and casual that I felt completely comfortable saying "I don't know. Whatever you think is best". Grew up in Los Angeles, I travel to Vegas, New York, all over and I've never had anything so incredibly fresh and delicately made. We drove about 35mins each way and I neglected to make reservations. I'm extremely grateful that they still accommodated us. However it all went downhill from there. I feel like we were very understanding that they had a slight dinner rush. With three servers and half capacity (due to Covid restrictions), there was no reason for such terribly subpar service. It took 15mins for anyone to acknowledge us. Another 20mins to get our drinks. The mojito tasted like mint soda and my martini was short served. I understood that they were busy so I went inside and put in our dinner order. 45mins later, we finally got our soups and appetizer. The soup was lukewarm, if that. 90mins total and we finally received our entrees. Our server was less than attentive, if that. I would have brought this up to our server while we were there, however, we were just ready to go home at this point. The three stars are for the main entrees. Like I said, I'm grateful they accommodated us but they should've said turned us away if they couldn't handle a two-top (my 3yo daughter only had the edamame and didn't even eat her rice). Dessert, this is about the only place i actually get dessert : Get the Strawberry Napoleon, Creamy filling, fried sugared wontons and home made strawberry sauce.. One Caveat: Service is attentive but be prepared to relax if you show up at a busy time. I was born and raised in Japan so every time I come here it's like coming home, food is amazing. Sashimi is always fresh, love that they have uni (occasionally). Not only is the sushi amazing but the service is truly incredible- prior to coming into the restaurant, I had just accidentally dropped my phone in the storm drain outside of the building. I was convinced it was gone; however Paige and Michael quickly came to my rescue and opened the storm drain and helped me retrieve my phone!! After moving to Suffolk, I came across countless positive reviews for Sushi Aka, and I'll admit that my skepticism kept me from visiting sooner as I doubted how such a great sushi restaurant could be hidden away among the unassuming shops in the downtown area. After enjoying one of their sushi burritos at a pop-up event they did with Brick & Mortar (now Nansemond Brewing Station), I decided to stop by during the Suffolk Restaurant week. I was immediately greeted by the friendly staff, and cozy ambiance. We ordered the gyoza and seaweed salad to start, and chicken teriyaki, sashimi, and a tuna roll for the main course. The gyoza was much better than most I've had at any restaurant, and the seaweed salad was as expected. The chicken teriyaki sauce had a lovely balance of sweet and savory - unlike the mass-produced, overly sweetened versions you'd find at other establishments. The rice was also perfectly cooked, and as a Japanese/Korean who grew up eating it everyday, that's saying something. Now, onto the star of the show - the sashimi plate. For the lunch portion, their was a selection of four different types of generously sliced fish. It was obvious that the fish was fresh, and that Chef Michael took the time to prepare a beautiful plate. Although I don't remember the fish that was served, I do remember that all four were equally delicious, and I would've happily eaten more. The tuna roll, although simple, also had the ideal balance of fish to rice. For dessert, we shared the Yuzu Tart and the Wonton Napoleon. I appreciated the fact that both weren't heavy or overly sweet. Between the two though, the Napoleon was definitely the best. The perfectly crisp wonton paired well with the slightly tart, macerated strawberries and creamy ice cream. By the end of the meal, I was already planning my next visit. Since then, I've been back more often than I'd like to admit, and they've yet to disappoint. Although I haven't tried everything on the menu, the 239 roll has been a favorite as well as the green tea creme brûlée. All of the staff there (Marita, Annie, Julie, and Summer) are always a joy to be around, and Chef Michael Hart is definitely more than adequate at his craft. I can now see why Sushi Aka has such a dedicated following. Even if it's a drive, I assure you, it's well worth it. Attempted to go here for a anniversary dinner. Walked in with about half of the tables full. Obviously looked under staffed. Waitress greeted my wife and I at the door and explained she was the only waitress and couldn't take on any more tables. When I asked if anyone appeared to be close to finishing their dinner she told us no and said unless we wanted to get a take out order she couldn't do anything more. I understand being a single waitress in a small restaurant however her approach and lack of problem solving left a bad taste in our mouths. Last Saturday evening, my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our experience at Sushi Aka. The sushi and sashimi were phenomenal. Christina, our waitress, was exceptional as well. We agreed the Tozai Sake is the best Sake we have had. The atom bomb roll was recommended by our waitress, and we will certainly order again. For dessert, my husband's favorite was the coffee hazelnut cashew ice cream, mine was the caramel butter cashew ice cream - all delightfully creamy without the heaviness. read more

Best sushi I've had in a long time. Many different fish offerings, all prepared perfectly. Great sashimi/nigiri lunch specials as well. The chicken teriyaki that my wife had was amazing, and we will be back for dinner sometime! read more
