My experience at Sushi Aka can only be described as Sublime. The sushi chef is humble about his talent, but he may be one of the best sushi chefs the world has ever seen. He meticulously searches for and hand picks only the best fish and ingredients, spends countless hours before the restaurant opens prepping, and has an attention to detail that is unmatched. You can taste this in his sushi and other dishes. Also, this man can cut green onions impressively thin. I was very impressed by this. No one wants to take a bite of a chunk of green onion. The first bite I took of his sushi rocketed me from my seat and transported me to another dimension. In this new dimension I was greeted by omnipotent and omniscient sushi beings. These sushi beings taught me the meaning of life and with them I spent thousands of years learning the intricacies of the universe itself. When I was ready, I plummeted back into my earthly body and found myself sitting in Sushi Aka. Was I in heaven? I'm not sure, but that out of body experience I had lived through taught me the meaning of life: Perfect Sushi. The other bites were good too. The staff is also wonderful. They go above and beyond and provide excellent service. The whole experience was on par with how great the food was. I'm surprised this place doesn't have national / international attention. I would describe myself as someone who really enjoys trying new restaurants, and well traveled. We traveled 45 minutes to check this place out and we were not disappointed. This isn't a place to go and fill your tummies, this is a place you go to fill all 5 senses with experience and adventure. Every single sushi place in virginia beach should study and experience this menu and take it to heart. No giant rice rolls with no flavor. Every single item had purpose, flavor, balance, and design. This was art. And! Quail eggs. Now, a heads up for people in a rush or who are starving. You're going to be waiting. Until hopefully they get other chefs up to speed, the items come out slowly. Went in for lunch and let me just say it was delicious! The fish was fresh and the quality was great. The only reason I gave it a 4stat is because 1) the water tasted funny. I think they use tap water in a fancy refillable bottle. It was but off putting. 2) the salad. The dressing was amazing but the salad it self was bitter. Hands down the best modern sushi in Hampton Roads. The chef-owner shut down his original restaurant here just to spend a couple years interning with Morimoto. Seriously, this place is NO JOKE. Don't hesitate...go to Suffolk and bring your appetite and your wallet. The only criticism I have is that their "new" building has restroom doors that are glass which is translucent. It's quite a bit disconcerting when you're using the restroom and two servers go into the supply closet right outside the bathroom door mere feet from you and you can SEE THEM. But that's not the chef's fault...the building was not his first choice. read more

If it isn't the best sushi spot in the 757 it's at the top of the list. Most of the sushi places are adding imitation crab meat or that crab salad mixture to all of their dishes. I hates it. Sushi Aka has something most places do not have and that's creativity and some authenticity in their dishes. You'll see rolls you're used to on the menu, but also dishes not found anywhere else. I love this place, however, first I need to clear the air.....I was there the night some idiot ordered a roll with shellfish, knowing he had an allergy to it. Obnoxious to the point that after he made a scene, cursing out the waitress and calling her names (instead of rushing to the car to get the epi-pen) while being dragged out by his wife, the remaining 4 people apologized, including one nice man that walked up to us and apologized again for having to see all of that while we were trying to eat. Who doesn't carry a pen with them when they go to a SEAFOOD PLACE when they have a SEAFOOD ALLERGY. It shouldn't be the waitresses responsibility to keep track of what you order, especially with a large group. She was crying after they left, she felt so bad about it. The menu clearly states what is in each roll. Who orders a roll with real crab meat, knowing it could kill you??? Back to my review. I will go back, again and again. Love Sushi Aka. High quality ingredients so you will pay a bit more than when going to the standard sushi place. Do not go here expecting the average sushi experience. The dishes here are in unique and exquisite. My whole family of 5 loves to go here for special occasions and sometimes as just a treat. Even the 7 year old loves it. The Toro tartare and the tuna pizza are his and my favorites. My oldest almost always orders their raw oysters paired with unique sauces (when in season). My middle child doesn't prefer sushi but enjoys their rockfish and dumpling soup. If you want to try something new or be more food adventurous this is the place to go. read more

Drove 45 minutes from Va Beach after reading the Pilot's food critics glowing review, about a year ago. I will gladly drive again as this was the best sushi I've ever had. Came on a rainy Saturday night and it wasn't busy, lucky for us. Service was attentive and patient, as our server walked us through the options. One person in our party had a food allergy and chef had no problem accommodating this request. Extensive wine, beer and cocktail list. I started with a Pom Pom cocktail and we ordered some appetizers. Miso soup was thick and hot with fresh tofu bits and great flavor. Angry wings, hamachi crudo and banh mi all delicious and disappeared in minutes. After that, the freshest sushi ever. Real wasabi with a great kick. I had crispy salmon skin roll, great texture and flavor. Tuna was fatty and rich, but oh the mackerel!! I could go on. Desserts were made in house and perfect. Miso ice cream tasted like butter pecan, like our sever told us. How do they do that! Wonton Napoleon was light and not too sweet. My husband and I have been eating here quite often for the last few years, we've come as a family with our kids, and introduced several of our friends to this establishment. The food is always excellent which is why we keep coming back despite the service being very spotty. You never know if your waitress is going to be easy to get along with or rude however, we chose to overlook this, since the food has always been great. After this last instance though we will never be coming back. After bringing my kids, like I have several times before, I was confronted by our waitress, asking how to "speed the process along" as there were several complaints from other customers about my kids. I couldn't believe what I was hearing as my kids were being kids, but by no means were they being out of line. I decided to just cancel our order and leave. I am disgusted by the way that we were treated after giving them so much of our business over time. By no means is this a family friendly restaurant and clearly not one that values their longtime customers. Our waitress (Annie) was amazing. With humor and clarity, she explained the menu (drinks! sushi! restaurant week! AND specials!). The food was incredible: we got raw oysters (both accompanying sauces were delicious!), fried soft-shell crab (love the pickles), sushi, and the Wasabi roll (wasabi aioli?? Yes, please!). Sushi Aka is amazing One of the best sushi restaurants from Hampton Roads to Richmond, seriously. The fish is incredibly fresh and most of it is flown in from Japan. The head chef, Michael, is very gifted chef! Not only is the fish super fresh but so are the veggies. They have their own farm that the veggies come from. I highly recommend Sushi Aka! We drive from Shore Dr in Va Beach just for their sushi. It's well worth the drive! I take drives up and down the east coast just for sushi so it's been a treat to find a place that has great sushi without having to drive several hours. read more
