I can't say enough good things about this place. It's a very small restaurant with a calm atmosphere; perfect for date night. The food was so delicious that I can't stop thinking about it

The most authentic sushi and sashimi place I ever tasted here in Virginia! We were station in Japan for 3 years and I fall in love with their culture, place and food. We've been here 5 years now, so far this is the best place I found. This place is so amazing and so authentic sushi, specially the sashimi! AKA is local and own by the chief that work closely with the famous Japanese sushi chef from NYC! I don't know if you're that craze with sushi and sashimi to drive an hour away but it's all worth it! It's the closest one from authentic Japanese sushi and sashimi! From their salad, appetizer, main course, up to dessert (red bean cream brûlée) ! Even their alcohol is really good as well as the service! Highly recommended!

My husband and I recently celebrated our 2nd Wedding Anniversary at Sushi Aka. The service was excellent, food was fresh and delicious and the ambiance was exactly what we were hoping for! We started with edemame and gyoza as appetizers (we were practically fighting over ever bite of the cabbage salad that came with the gyoza ) as entrees we each got 2 rolls and every bite was fresh and delicious! Since it was our anniversary we decided to get dessert and so glad we did...we probably would have licked the plate if we weren't out in public! We will definitely be back!

Did you ever live in or visit Japan? Do you like Sushi? Well come on down to Sushi Aka's they'll get ya right. They have "American" style and can go traditional depending on what you order. We had multiple delectables, including some delicious wagyu that was on special. Great for a date night, business meet-up, or for just a splurge. Arigato Gozaimasu!

Hands down the BEST sushi restaurant if not all of Hampton Roads but all of VA! We've dined all over the world, and we throughly enjoy the quality of ingredients, fish, and service. It's a small intimate restaurant run by a small staff, which are like family. The owner is the sushi chef, which to me is a good sign because you know his attention to detail with quality ingredients is going to be top notch. They make all their dishes in house including some amazing desserts. If sushi/sashimi aren't your preference, they have great beef, pork and chicken options too. Their pork belly ramen special is so good my daughter craves it. Most of the time when we dine in or order takeout we give them a budget for a sushi/sashimi platter with our likes and dislikes and they come up with an outstanding presentation. A home run every time! Support local small businesses, especially this one, it's a gem in downtown Suffolk and Hampton Roads area!

Ate here tonight and was very pleased! The food was excellent, service very good, and the restaurant very nice! My wife had the Caribbean roll (daily special) and I tried the salmon with risotto and asparagus. Both were very good. Give it a try if in the area!

House salad - the dressing is delish!

Second visit - I had the salmon teriyaki bowl again with the house salad. That salad dressing is divine! It's very light and the Nori elevates it. I also appreciate the array of lettuce. I'm a huge fan of darker greens in my salad, and this did isn't disappoint. Service was decent - it just took a minute to place our orders and get the rolls. But, it was lunch time so no biggie. I tried the rockfish roll. It was great! I'll be back!!

Atmosphere: delightful, service: fantastic, sushi: exceptionally fresh and tasted incredible! Probably some of the finest sushi I have tasted ever, and the staff were all super welcoming and pleasant. We ordered a chefs choice dinner that came with a roll and sashimi which was all beautiful and tasted amazing. The Adam bomb roll is my favorite and just melted in my mouth. The island roll was also sooo good, the mango and jalapeño made it taste so fresh and just really brightened the palette. We also ordered the smoked octopus with pickled corn and holy crap it was sooo goood! Fresh REAL wasabi, and tons of gluten free and Vegan options. Also extremely allergy conscious! Cocktails were also AMAZING, my husband ordered 2 of the sake mixed with gin he loved it so much. I would recommend this place for anyone and can't wait to go again!

I read so many good reviews of Sushi Aka here in Yelp so we went for Valentine's day. We didn't know what to expect since we lived in Japan for 3 years but when our appetizer came out, it brought smile to our face. The seaweed salad tasted like the one we used to have in Japan. Their sashimi were all so fresh and tasty. The sushi rice on the sushi though was a little bit different. Nonetheless, we still enjoyed it. My little foodie enjoyed their calamari although it didn't taste fresh. The ambiance was romantic. We knew for sure that the restaurant put effort to make everyone feel the love on Valentine's. We will surely be coming back for more to try on the menu.

Only one word to describe this hidden gem, "Wow!" I've gotten sushi all over the world and Aka is easily in the top 5. The eel and Salmon are among the freshest and finely cut I've had. The overall quality is topped only by the friendly staff - who went above and beyond to make the experience enjoyable. Can't wait for next trip - will be my first stop.

Amazingly awesome service that outlined menu and answered a barrage of questions I had about the menu. Provided great recommendations to feed my late night appetite! What is also great you may ask? Happy hour specials for the late eaters!! That's right happy hour treats after 9 pm, what a concept! Full bar to choose from, I had local draft IPA to wash down this delicious treat. Had some crispy rolls, kimchi fried rice with mojo pork and an Asian slaw dog. Mmm mmm mmm all around! Portions are decent so bring your appetite! Truly enjoyed the kimchi fried rice, the dog had a lot of bun and slaw yet still hit the spot. Great vice within this place with some music in the background, not overpowering to have casual convos either at the bar or your table. Great for single dinner plan, date night or a group of friends. The staff were helpful, and we appreciated the music choices. My only criticism would be that everything lacked a bit of salt and there were no salt shakers in sight. I like that it's spaced out and you're not over crowded. Our waitress Catherine was awesome. She's always nice, friendly, and patient. She gave us the menu specials and allowed us to chat a bit before ordering. My friend ordered the cheese wontons, general tso chicken and dan dan noodles. The wontons were really good. I like that they were sweet and crispy. I'd get them again for sure. The dan dan noodles were spicy and flavorful. My sister and I got the Mongolian chicken, storm fish, and eggplant. This is my go to meal that I normally get, it's always tasty. The storm fish normally comes with a spicy mayo sauce, but they didn't have it this time. The fish was still ok, but the sauce is what gives it flavor, so it was a little bland this time. The eggplant and Mongolian chicken were yum, hot, and fresh!! I definitely recommend this restaurant to alot of people. I just think it's more elevated compared to regular Chinese takeout food. They have many delicious options on the menu, and again the vibe is chill. If you're planning a group dinner this is definitely a great option. Before we moved to Williamsburg, we visited the area for vacations, and Thai Tara is alway the first place we go for dinner and the final meal before leaving. Whether you crave the freshest Sushi/Sashimi or you prefer authentic Thai street food, you will find it here. We have traveled to Bangkok many times, and from first hand experience can say without exaggerating that the Chicken Sate or Fresh Rolls are as authentic as you might find at the street markets in BKK. The Tom Kha and Tom Yum soups are a treat. The extensive selection of warm Thai dishes like Pad Thai and Penang Curry are outstanding. We often include a hand roll or a selection of Sashimi from the Sushi bar in our orders. Never has the sushi bar prepared anything less than perfect. And if you want a real treat, finish your meal with a Mango Sticky Rice. Although small in size, it's surely is a dessert of the gods. An extensive bar is also on hand at Thai Tara for your favorite hand mixed cocktail, umbrella drink or beer, including Thailand's own Singha, a refreshing lager. Plan to arrive early because this cozy (but not small) place gets very busy, especially on weekends. Parking can be tight. But even in the busiest evenings, service is always prompt, attentive, and with a Thai smile.
