Well, this was a disappointment. They were the closest restaurant within walking distance of the hotel we could agree on. First the wait order was long, I think they forgot about us since we were sat around a corner. Then they didn't even bring our drinks and after a while brought my sushi, missing a roll, and my friend's main. Still no drinks or her appetizer. I had to remind the server for my tea and water and she had to remind him of her eggplant and drink. Finally he brought my tea, no water, and tofu not eggplant for her and her drink. I think they forgot about us again because the tofu had been sitting and was lukewarm and had soaked up the sauce. My sushi was dry and had obviously been sitting as well. No refill on my tea when he took my plate and the water never appeared. Do not recommend, we ate it because we were hungry and tired and just wanted to go back to the hotel read more

I really can't say anything good about this place other than its convenient location. Like a previous reviewer, I was fairly grossed out by my grey salmon and tuna. A universal and disconcerting un-fresh fishy flavor was present in all our rolls, and even the heavily fried calamari. The eel was cold and sloppily assembled, and lacked any sense that it was prepared by someone who cared about my experience. Even my very non-foodie partner found it difficult to eat. Don't go out of your way for this place, but if you're beyond starving and don't mind mediocre food, I guess it's fine. (What an endorsement, eh?!) I ordered cucumber and avocado rolls to go and asked them to top it with spicy mayo. (See photo) They quoted me 15 minutes for the order to be ready, though when I arrived 15 minutes later they notified me they hadn't cooked the rice yet so it would be a while longer. Um, no rice at a sushi bar? Isn't that kind of a staple ingredient? WHAAA? Well, 30 minutes later I got my to go box and wasn't impressed at all. I spent over 14 bucks and the end result was sloppy and unappetizing. They just spooned the spicy mayo on top, and frankly, it looked gross. Tastewise the food is pretty tasty. I wanted to get a lunch special, and all the boxes start at just about $10 and go up from there. I'm usually a Tekka-don or Unagi-don kinda guy, but in an attempt to save some money, I ordered the California-don which was good and all, but felt like a bit of a letdown, once you see how small the amount of tuna you get is. They pile on tons of avocado, and ambrosial it may be, it's still no excuse to give me five pieces of tuna sashimi. And tons of rice. The texture of the sashimi was amazing, however tastewise it was not super fresh (just sort of fresh). Lunch special comes with miso and salad, which came in a sort of yuzu-soy dressing of some sort, pretty standard taste, just not the heavy honey-mustard-carrot-ginger dressing that some other places slather on. I'm sure there's better sushi deals being near chinatown/downtown, but I just had to try the place. I will say that the one saving grace was how quick the food was ready. read more

Totally disappointing experience with an online order via Uber Eats. The in house delivery didn't bother to call to notify of pickup and just left my order at the front desk of my hotel without connecting with me, though I instructed through the app to meet them outside to pick up the order. Sushi order sat out for an unclear amount of time, perhaps up to 40 minutes. I called the restaurant to report this so they can address this problem (bad if this happened to multiple orders potentially leading to spoilage issues that could make many people sick) and they were barely apologetic. Just okay, thanks for reporting the weather attitude. I'll never order from this place again or go in person. I had even given the driver a good tip ahead of time on top of the regular delivery fee. Our first trip to DC and this was our second night here. I got the veggie sushi combo. It was really good but certainly not great. The salad was edible, the dressing was zesty and a little spicy (in a good way). My husband got the California Roll and LOVED it. We sat outside and that was a real treat. The weather is really nice and I was happy our server didn't forget about us. Beer was served in a chilled glass which is always appreciated. All in all I probably won't return. I went here for lunch today hoping that I would have found a nice sushi place close to work. However, I was completely underwhelmed. I decided to try the "Lunch Box" which seemed like a great deal for a mere 11 bucks. The miso soup was good. It had a nice amount of saltiness and great miso flavor. However, my meal went down hill from there. First of all, the soy sauce was a brand I had never heard of. I'm not a snob to soy sauce brands, but this one tasted incredibly "off". The box looked great, but the taste did not match up to its looks. I first tried one of their California rolls and could only choke down one. Maybe I hit the restaurant on a bad day for their fish, but it tasted horrible! I then tried their dumplings that were included in the box which were cold, and not meant to be cold. Once again, something tasted like old fish. The salad was pretty good, but did I really come to a sushi restaurant to eat the salad and soup? I ordered the chicken terriaki for my "entree" (included in the box) and once again could barely choke it down. The chicken tasted like it was boiled and not at all what I picture when I hear "chicken terriaki". I barely finished my meal, paid the bill and left. The only reason I would try this restaurant again would be to try the sushi/sashimi and hope that the delivered a better product than the lunch box. This is a substandard sushi place. I went for "happy hour" which I place in quotes because the actual happy hour discounts are like $1 line item discounts. My boyfriend and I ordered a few specialty cocktails which was still overpriced even on special and rolls. Overall the service was fine, the restaurant decor and ambiance was mediocre, and the food was average at best. I think the bill was close to $100 for two of us for HAPPY HOUR. So, unless you don't mind paying close to full price for mediocre food, I advise you to look elsewhere. Adams Morgan has better fare and you just take the red line there... read more

To preface my poor review, I just want to say that I've previously had fairly pleasant experiences here while dining in. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for my experience today. I also never leave reviews for restaurants, but this one was more than warranted! I selected the option that Sushi AOI was offering through a meal-pickup service today, which consisted of 6 California rolls and 6 spicy tuna rolls. The tuna had a gray color and slimy texture, which I know is not normal. Spicy tuna rolls are typically my favorite type of roll, and I order it quite frequently at various restaurants, so I know that the tuna itself is supposed to be a pinkish-red color and not gray (picture evidence attached). Moreover, tuna doesn't usually have a 'fishy' taste, but this one did, which tells me that the fish was expired. While the California rolls seemed fine, I was so put off by the bad tuna that I couldn't finish my lunch and had to go out and buy something else. I'm so displeased by the spicy tuna today that I am very hesitant to dine here again. BEWARE OF THE GRAY TUNA!!!!! read more

Agedashi-tofu was too boring, can be saltier and use more mirin, but size was big enough for four people to start. Yakitori needed to cook more, no one likes to eat soft pink 1/2 coocked chiken. Decor was okay, typical Chinese/korean owned Japanese place with crappy Japanese noren and little things on the counters. For low key biz dinner this place is probably okay, but if you are taking care of important client, just hit one of the steak houses near by. read more

A rip off, imho. My friends enjoyed their sushi orders, but one of them found the wasabi dumplings too spicy. So, if i was desperate for sushi, I might come back. Eh. Both my coworker and I were pretty underwhelmed with the sushi here, especially for the prices. We got the lunch roll combo - between the two of us, we ordered the salmon and avocado, salmon, spicy salmon, spicy tuna, and cucumber and avocado rolls. Nothing special. I enjoyed the miso soup, while my friend found it to be way too salty. Maybe if I go back, I'd be a little more adventurous with my order to see what happened.
