Some of the best Japanese food I have had outside of Japan and at a reasonable price. The food is fresh and prepared with care. I had the sashimi roll, which is a no rice roll of salmon, avocado and crab (real crab), wrapped in cucumber. The portions of each ingredient were perfectly balanced. My husband had a two item combination with salmon teriyaki and a spicy tuna roll, which came with miso soup, green salad, sunomono and rice. The teriyaki was savory and not too sweet. The tuna was fresh tasting with a good hot pepper flavor. We liked that the pieces were actually bite sized. Salads, rice and soup were all very good. We almost never order dessert, but the red bean mochi ice cream with little swirls of whipped cream was a nice ending to a wonderful meal. The menu is large and is a reasonable compromise between strictly traditional Japanese fare and items that are not too unusual for the local palate. The restaurant is casual, spotlessly clean and has indoor and outdoor seating. Our Japanese server (possibly an owner?) was kind, professional and efficient. I looked up our Usual Spot in MB and it wasn't taking online orders. For months, not taking online orders on Friday or Saturday nights. That's ok, Usual Spot, I'm done with you. So I turn to my ol' friend, Yelp and I searched. Sushi Beluga caught my eye with words like "fresh," "best Japanese food I have had outside of Japan," "chef buys his own fish," etc. I've known about Sushi Beluga for almost 10 years - I never thought anything of it because it's in a strip mall in PDR...(shame on me, I know). Let's just get down to it. We ordered for take out: salmon aburi sushi, salmon miso aburi sushi, yellowtail belly sushi, albacore sushi, a lemon salmon roll and some apps like plain edamame, miso soup, gyoza. Miso soup is twice the size of most sushi places and twice the flavor!!! Really loved this miso soup, most sushi places have miso soup that kinda taste off for unknown reason (maybe they're made quickly) but this was fantastic. Simple but done right. Edamame, great, salty, squirty. Gyoza was only 4 per order, but the taste was great and tasted homemade because the ginger stood out. Salmon aburi...fantastic. Salmon miso aburi...so good I could eat an entire meal of only salmon miso aburi. Yellowtail belly was buttery and fresh. Albacore was standard, fresh. Lemon salmon roll. Different, but really tasty. Honestly, blown away. That's why I'm here writing this review. Not what I expected. I was hoping it would be good but it was GREAT! Everything was so FRESH, thoughtful, and full of flavor. And even better, I got a replacement for Usual Spot who doesn't take online orders anymore. I got the spicy scallop roll, gyoza, salmon teriyaki, and it also came with a side salad, rice, and miso soup, so for the price I think it was kinda worth it. The spicy scallop roll I would not recommend. Prior to ordering it, the server already warned me that I would be spicy and I was fine with it since I like spicy. Despite having quite many sushi restaurants, admittedly I haven't had that many which I thought having good fusion sushi rolls. So still in search for it, giving Sushi Beluga a go. Parking would be bit tricky particularly on weekend as the place sat together with some other restaurants in the neighborhood, and the option most likely was street parking. The restaurant also was quite petite with some additional seats outside. Fortunately it's only two of us so at least better wait time (though wouldn't call it quick). The place looked very busy on our visit with plenty of people dined in as well as bunch of to-go bags stacking. We tried few dishes from different sections on the menu, starting with the Crispy Mushroom stuffed with Kani and Spicy Tuna. It's a great mix of crispy and chewy texture and I loved the extra kick from the spicy sauce. The Baked Salmon Roll came next with decent balance between the rice and stuffing, which was usually my top requirement when it came to sushi roll. The sauce was peculiar yet succulent being creamy but complemented by tangy hint. Feeling like going for one more, Unagi Nigiri was the pick as we had salmon and tuna already. It's awesome that the unagi came in great size with just bit of rice, exactly how I wanted my nigiri. The sauce was also yum, and I could see myself having this again next time. Went here with my daughter on a Wednesday night. It's in a little strip mall with a small, crowded parking lot, so I was glad we got there early. We were so hungry, we forgot to take pictures but we had miso soup, tuna on crispy rice, mixed tempura, and a specialty roll. Everything was very good. Honestly, food wise, it wasn't anything special. There are a lot of sushi restaurants in SoCal that offer similar fare at comparable prices. But there was definitely a hole in the wall, mom and pop charm about this little restaurant. It is small and quaint, but the owners take pride in their establishment and are so friendly.
