I am surprised by the mediocre ratings for Sushi Boy. It's such a convenient place to pick up sushi to bring home. I always come here for their huge party platters or to-go rolls. They give you a good amount of sushi for a cheap prices. 8 pieces of spicy tuna rolls and 6 nigiri for $12.99 is unheard of! They also have the options of beef bowls, udon and salads. Happy hour from 2:30-5:30 daily. They also send out coupons periodically for 30%, which makes it so much better! What more can you ask for? read more

My first time here I tried the November special: karrage chicken bowl. This came with white rice and a salad that was topped with dark meat chicken. The salad was a little soggy because the chicken was fried. The bowl didn't have a sauce unless you added your own soy sauce. The chicken was ok, not outstanding. Hey guys! Brian here, Im the weekend cashier/chef at sushi boy. Just clearing up the whole 35cents for an extra sauce review. The rule is that any extra sauce wanted is 35 cents as shown on the sign which is posted on the cash register. We do have a mercy rule which gives us permission to give 1 extra. If a cashier does give you more than 1 extra, just know we pay for it out of pocket. Its only 35 cents. We dont want to charge you extra for the sauce but its store policy. Chain sushi sounds and IS awful, theoretically. We want sushi to be fresh and unplanned. Frizzy thoughts of instant sushi sound... fishy, at best, and MRSA-laden, at worst. Fortunately, this is NOT the Sushi Boy case. In fact, Sushi Boy proves better and fresher than some swanky spots. The food is g-o-o-d, and the variety is impressive. What makes this place a serious win are the prices, which are just mind boggling in their bargain. Make out like a bandit, and feed a family of three on only 15-bucks, like I did. (And my teenager eats me out of house, home, pension, deep freezer, earthquake stock, et. al.... while my 5 y/o is a poster child for the fickle and picky.) The May 2011 special value meal : Takumi--salmon and shrimp California roll, Tekka Maki, Kappa Maki, and a spicy tuna hand roll, all for... [Drum roll, please ----no, the "drum roll" is not a type of sushi. Lol.]... $4.99!!! Bonkers, hunh? For just $2 more, the Kiwami Meal promises to ply you with miso soup, Teriyaki chicken, and a California roll; as well as shrimp, sweet potato, carrot, and broccoli tempura; AND a salad on top of all that! I would give zero stars but that is not possible, so here it goes... Teriyaki chicken looks like giblets: The worst and grossest part of a chicken you can find. They give you a very small portion. The "veggie tempura" is potato, a hard carrot, and an over sized, overcooked piece of broccoli. Miso Soup has no tofu and the edamame looked old and overcooked. I should have known from the pictures of their food but I gave it a try. Boy do I wish I didn't. I should have known considering the cooks were Mexican, not Japanese. This reviews is based solely on their Teriyaki chicken and rice bowls. I have been coming to this joint for years and I haven't ordered anything other then the chicken bowls. Their sushi could be the best in the world or the worst but I wouldn't know because I hate sushi and won't eat it from any restaurant. The chicken bowls here are delicious. They give you a nice amount of chicken and rice and the price is pretty cheap. The teriyaki sauce is very tasty as well. Another great thing about this place is that they prepare you food very quickly, well, the chicken bowls at least. I highly recommend trying the chicken bowls here if you are like me and are a chicken bowl lover. I can't vouch for any other food items on the menu so choose at your own risk. read more

Yeah man I am Japanese, but not expert in Sushi. Generally I like my food cooked. I ordered the Kobe plate, It had everything from fish roe to scallop sushi and a bowl of Miso soup. BTW I never liked Miso as a kid, unless you drop a large dollop of cooked sticky rice in there. For the price you can't beat it! Sushi was fresh and tested very good. Thia place is a staple for sushi. Ive always loved sushi boy and any time I'm in the area we go here. We get the 3 item combo with Teri chicken, cali rolls, and tempura veg/shrimp. With miso. The food is great. Always consistently delicious. Servers are kind and patient if you dont know what you want just yet and are helpful. It's dining area is always clean, quiet and has big windows to watch the cars and passersby. I recommend. And continue to recommend. read more

Definately fast food sushi - cheap fast food. This place opened about 2 weeks ago so it's really nice inside since everything is brand new. It used to be a KFC across from the Nissan dealership. The food is reasonably priced if not outright cheap but the quality isn't so good. All their fish is cut at their factory so they assemble the sushi on-site and the fish is not always cut very good. The service is quick and all the employees shout out a welcome when you first walk in the store. What can I say... fast food sushi. Some of it is better than some of the restaurants I've been to and some of the sushi is not. I think it depends on who is making the sushi rolls - sometimes the rolls are closed like they are suppose to and other times, the rolls are popped open. I've been to this Sushi Boy a few times. It's nothing too special, but I am giving them four stars for service. On New Years, my family ordered to large platters to take to relatives' houses on New Years. We ordered in advance like we always do and scheduled to pick them up at 11:30 on New Years Day. We arrived a good forty minutes early and they did not have our sushi prepared. We were prepared to wait forty minutes, but they prepared ours for us on the spot even though we arrived early. I stopped by only because I had a short lunch and this was the closest non-crowded sushi place (that should have told me something). I've been going to the doctor over here for years and finally stoped at Sushi Boy. The sushi tasted very fresh and the waitress was very helpful in suggesting items I might like. The place was very clean and employees friendly. I ordered a plate with chicken teriyaki but was disappointed that the chicken was dry and had skin on it. It was actually rotisserie chicken. My partner and I go to Sushi Boy every Friday night (and have been for almost a year now) for some cheap sushi. Make no mistake about it, this is nothing compared to going to a sushi bar so have proper expectations going here. With that said, the quality is better than supermarket and buffet sushi. Sushi Boy has two things going for it: low prices and made-to-order sushi. They offer other items such as tempura, udon, and teriyaki but we have never tried anything other than sushi here. Afterall, this is Sushi Boy, not Tempura Boy. Their monthly special usually includes their Takumi sushi combo for 4.99. It includes 3 pieces of tuna maki (tekka maki), 3 pieces of cucumber maki, 4 pieces of CA rolls, a small spicy tuna handroll, an Ebi shrimp sushi, salmon sushi, and a miso soup. Great deal for 5 bucks. Outside of this $5 combo, most of their sushi prices are average for fast food sushi. If you are hosting a party or have a family or sushi lovers, their sushi party platters are also great deals when they are discounted. We ordered a huge platter full of sushi (Including many types of raw fish, scallop, eel, ikura, uni, and more) that fed four for less than $30 and we were stuffed afterwards. By the way, we have never gotten sick from this place. I would never eat raw fish from a restaurant that I didn't think had some standards. If you compare this place with your local sushi bar, no doubt this place earns one or two stars only. But factoring in the price, the food is pretty decent, and thus deserves 4 stars. read more

First time to this place and I must say it's not bad. I was unsure what to order and the cashier who took my order was patient and wait till I was ready to order, but we were the only costumer there. We end up getting a platter and the great thing about our platter was that it was 50% off. The staff were all friendly and nice which makes my first time experience very welcome. I am a big fan of chicken teriyaki bowls throughout the South Bay and always looking for new places. Went here today at lunch time for the first time and had their version. OK price, nice veggies, tasty. Only thing I did not like was some of the chicken prices had skin attached, but I separated these before eating. They have a fountain drink machine. Prices are lower that most fast/casual places. Also nice is they bring the food to your table. read more

I would rate Sushi Boy a little higher than buying the pre-made sushi you find at the various markets. At least the rice is still warm and not hard. What is bargain now is the $4.99 specials. One of the specials includes a few salmon and tuna sushi pieces, plus miso soup. As for the quality... well the rice really lacks that sweet vinegar taste that make sushi so appealing. Also some of the cucumbers in the spicy tuna and california rolls were a little hard. Sushi Boy quality does vary from place to place. I usually find the Pacific Square location is consistently good. The downside is finding a seat t is a little hard when busy. The torrance location has so-so parking, it is shared with other businesses. I got the tempura spicy tuna sushi and chicken teriyaki and the taste is actually good. The next day I got the kobe sushi platter and the serving and taste is good.
