It had been years since I'd been back to Sushi Cuisine. Decided to give it a shot again, while with a friend. We came for lunch, and there were plenty of tables. The prices have really gone up on their menu. The sushi rolls that we shared tasted just okay, but honestly were a little bland. One complaint that I still have that I had before is that the sushi rice rolls fall apart when you try to pick them up with chopsticks. Sushi rice should not instantly fall apart like that. The chicken appetizer that we got, (chicken yakitory) was the fatty parts of the chicken. The gyoza was a bit over fried. The Caterpillar roll contained very crunchy tempura with a soft avocado topping, perfect blend of crunchy and soft. Was in the area on Friday and my son like Japanese food so decided to come here. The restaurant was not crowded. I ordered the spicy ramen since it rain during the day and it was chilly. When the server bought over the ramen, I was disappointed. First, I didn't expect it be instant noodles. Second, when you order spicy, you expect redness in your bowl, but instead they cut thai chili in it. I should have looked on Yelp for pic before ordering or ask the server if the ramen is instant noodles. If I knew, I would not have ordered it. I will definitely ask next time if I'm in a different city. Never had this experience in the bay area. The only culture I know using instant noodles as ramen is Korean so I do expect getting instant noodles if I'm ordering ramen at a Korean restaurant but not at a Japanese restaurant. Even though I've lived in Merced for many years, today was my first time visiting this place. Like maybe other sushi restaurants, when I order sushi I'd be expecting those little tiny cheaply made sushi's. I was charged $32 for two dragon rolls and I thought that was HELLA EXPENSIVE !!!!!! I guess it is fine cuz I've been craving sushi and the last time I had sushi was in 2019 right before the pandemic. 15 minutes later after I picked up my order, I opened it in the car to dig in. I was blown away by how ginormous these sushi were! Lol it's HUGE!!! I usually buy two just cuz one don't fill me up but this time I could barely finish one. Finally a decent sushi joint in Merced! I came here craving sushi and Japanese food and I was not let down. I came with friends for lunch. The lunch specials are cheap for Japanese cuisine and I'm definitely coming here for lunch more often. What we ordered were the calamari appetizer, chicken teriyaki bento, philly maki roll, and the deluxe sushi lunch combo. Miso soup and salad was complementary with the sushi combo. The miso soup was nice and was not as salty as other miso soups I've had before. The sushi and nigiri were both very good. The slices of fish didn't seem to be as flavorful as they could be but the portions are huge. The chicken teriyaki was tasty and satisfying as well. The only thing is that there was not that many tempura pieces and not enough batter on them. The calamari was not something I would order again because like the tempura, it was not crispy enough and not enough batter. Next time I come back, I need to try more rolls because that what they seem to excel in the most. read more

Sushi was decent and on the higher end pricing wise, which was fine. However, all dishes came out piece by piece which prolonged our dinner. Then we discovered that the party if 6 we had meant the tab would include a 18% gratuity, which wasn't posted anywhere. That even wouldn't be an issue but we didn't get one dish cleared while we were there or checked on even once. I had to ask the server for the items we needed such as plates and soy sauce dishes, we barely had napkins or forks and also never even got refilled water or tea. We were very thirsty the whole time and Our server was nowhere to be found. So not service deserving of an almost a $30 tip . They don't tell you about the added gratuity so look at the bill because they have a big tipping box on the check and if you don't check you might double tip. I tried to talk to the guy who suddenly appeared at the end about it and he just shrugged and snickered. So I felt the need to post to give a heads up to other patrons. read more

Food: The sushi (nigiri and rolls) is fine, they have a lot of variety of rolls and so far the two that I ordered the last 2 times I went were good aside from the portions being either a little too big or too small. I don't typically eat a lot of sushi even though it's a sushi place instead I mainly ate my shrimp tempura udon which is pretty fairly price (it was around 15$ for the soup and tempura). The tempura was good and crispy but I feel like 2 pieces of shrimp, a carrot slice, a sweet potato, and piece of broccoli, isn't.. a lot considering it's called shrimp tempura not shrimp and veggie. I think there should be more shrimp, also most other sushi places that sell any tempura also give a tempura sauce which I think could be nice to have. Also, the udon itself had a lot of udon noodles which was good but I feel like the broth itself could have more flavor. Service: They seem to have a lot of regular customers which is nice to see. I went on a Saturday afternoon and I was immediately helped and told I could sit anywhere. Soon after sitting down the waiter asked for drink orders, then a few minutes later took our food order. We ordered 2 rolls and a shrimp tempura udon which only took around 10 minutes to all come out at once hot and fresh. Obligatory, first time going here. Before eating - I came here with a friend. When we got in, it was somewhat busy(50% full capacity?) but we still got seated quickly. Looking at the menu, there was plenty of photos so that was visually appealing and helped me decide what I wanted. Once we ordered, the food didn't take long to come out. Taste - Honestly speaking, I feel like Merced is a smaller town so the quality wouldn't be good but it turned out better than I thought! I liked the miso soup, the salad with sauce was drenched like a typical restaurant so that was basic. The fish tastes fresh and somewhat firm. The caterpillar roll was delicious. I even had a sushi boat and that was good overall as well. The waitress was attentive and made sure to stop by here and there to see how we were doing. After eating - I didn't feel bloated or any discomfort from the food. I was happy with my meal and check came very quickly. The restaurant staffs actually work together so things were moving by a lot quicker. 4/5 Overall, as limited as it is here with sushi, I actually enjoyed this place and wouldn't mind coming back. read more

It's always a great experience when I come here. The sushi is soooo yummy. The best in town in my opinion. We usually get the titanic roll and the lion king roll and miso soup. We have had other stuff on the menu and it's delish as well. The service is always phenomenal. We went on our anniversary and Valentine's Day and everywhere on vday was busy and denied us. We came here thinking they would too. We were in and out within the hour! They sat us as soon as they could and brought our food out fast. The two young waitresses, you two are amazing workers!!
