My biggest issue with this place is the service. I get that they are busy but we were seated upstairs and basically ignored for almost 30 minutes. I had to add more to my parking because I already saw how slow the service was but we felt bad leaving. There was a party that came in after us and didn't get any menus or greeted or anything for about 15-20 minutes so they left. Another party came and sat, ordered but then left as soon as the salads came out (I overheard something about the orders being wrong but still I felt bad the food was wasted). After the initial wait (where we bussed our own menus, dishes and napkins) everything else actually finished in an appropriate time period where the whole dinner took about 1.5 hours. I tried the beef bulgogi, seafood stir fry, soft shell crab app and the calamari app. The calamari was pretty frozen tasting, the bimbimbap wasn't very good due to the strange ground chicken, the bulgogi was actually decent but came with two raw baby carrots (old and wrinkled) and raw broccoli which was odd. We had to ask for sauce for the poke and it basically was a salad with raw fish on top... not super impressed overall especially since we have to pay for parking. Seafood stir fry barely had any seafood and the noodles/sauce tasted packaged. This place is attached to the theater so it's easy for people heading to see a show but other wise I'd avoid this place. Only redeeming quality is that the owner (I think?) was very sweet. The best dish we got was the soft shell crab but even then there wasn't a lot of it. read more

This is the perfect place to grab dinner before a show at Playhouse Square. In fact, it is literally connected to the main Playhouse Square building, if you are attending a show, chances are there will be no need to even step outside after your meal. Sushi En is pretty casual, so you don't have to worry about being under dressed, which is a nice option for places in this area. In addition, the prices are very reasonable. Given their location, they could easily charge more, so I really appreciate the fact that they don't. My go-to is the California combo, a traditional Cali roll, a spicy Cali roll, plus soup or salad. If I am really hungry, I'll order one California roll plus a Chicken Hibachi Bowl. If you are more adventurous when it comes to your meals, go with the Drunken Tiger roll. Their edamame is also very good. I typically make reservations, but anytime I'm there, people always seem to be walking in and getting seated without a long wait. Sushi En is my favorite spot in this area. You will not be disappointed! read more

Very mediocre spot, and an odd service experience imo. We came in around 5 and it was super busy. The hostess looked busy and distracted, but we were told all tables were full except the communion table in an upstairs loft area. We went ahead and took it, and it was just one big table upstairs. Nothing was setup, so we had the grab plates and menus ourselves on a table next to us. We then proceeded to wait for 20+ with nobody taking our order or getting water. Within that time, another party sat down at the community table, and left without ordering (presumably bc the wait was too long). I ended up going downstairs to ask someone to get our order. While I was waiting for someone, another party also seemed to be looking to be seated and couldn't find the hostess. They ended up getting seated at our community table, and also left before eating. We finally were able to place our orders, I got the salmon poke bowl and tried the calamari, fried soft shell crab, and bulgolgi. The fried soft shell crab was a bit too oily for my taste, the calamari was fine. When I got my poke, they had forgot sauce and I had to downstairs again to ask for it. There was a bit too much lettuce for my taste, and it seems like they reuse a lot of vegetables. For example, the lettuce (which I've never had in poke) is the same lettuce in the house salad, even though it was a the size was hard to eat in my poke. The bulgogi dish had the same raw carrots as a side that was in the house salad as well.. like they couldn't even cook the carrots lol. Towards the end the place cleared out a bit and service was better, but by that time, we were pretty much done with our meal. The lady we were talking to was very sweet and I could tell she was overwhelmed and apologetic towards us, but if you're too busy, I think it would be better to just not accept more tables. Not worth the wait for the food, but I understand why the service the way it was, especially bc they looked understaffed as well. read more

We eat sashimi, Japanese style! Most of the rolls that people rave about are an Americanized version of sushi. That is fine if it's your bag, and they have plenty of that here. If you really want to know the QUALITY of a sushi bar/restaurant, it's all about the freshness and variety of the fish! Our sashimi boat for two had o-toro (fatty tuna belly), maguro ("regular" tuna), farmed Norwegian salmon, wild King salmon, Japanese striped bass, Japanese hamachi belly (yellowtail), and ebi (cooked shrimp). We also had wasabi tobiko (spicy flying fish roe), ikura (salmon roe), uni (sea urchin), and an unagi ( barbecued Japanese freshwater eel) hand roll. Add the complimentary ginger dressed salad and miso soup and the two of us were very full and extremely happy for $75 before tax and tip. A definite go to in the Cleveland theater district! read more

Our food choices...tempura shrimp and veggies, shumai (served lukewarm), cucumber salad, salmon roe sushi, spicy scallop with cucumber roll, eel & cucumber roll. So many good reviews for this place had us scratching our heads a bit, but maybe it was an off night? Charming new sushi restaurant in Playhouse Square. Location is ideal for theatre-goers, but comes with the typical parking headaches of its prime location. The restaurant itself isn't too big and likely fills up quickly on event days. You can probably get away with walking in but reservations are possible as well. We were greeted with a huge smile by one of the hostesses and seated quickly. A lot of the staff seems to be Korean so despite the name, you'll actually find some Korean comforts like bulgogi and bibimbap as well. The laminated menu is the one you'll want to focus on if sushi is your aim. Use the provided marker to pick which/how many rolls you want and the sushi chefs will get working right away. I'd recommend trying at least 1-2 of those based on your fish/seafood preference and rounding out the meal with the raw sushi rolls in the first column that are more basic and VERY attractively priced. Our food came out in a very reasonable time, though the restaurant also wasn't too busy that night. The Takoyaki were on the smaller side but tasty, well-presented, and bursting with fried octopus goodness. The Pork Gyoza are deep fried and just okay. If you order a bunch of rolls, they come out on a nicely decorated wooden lazy susan so no one has to reach over each other in your group to get the roll they want. Of all the chef's and specialty rolls we tried, we couldn't pick a favorite and the quality was solid. I'm only sad that they don't stay open later since it's easy to lose track of time when you're enjoying such tasty food with friends. Would definitely be able to eat my way through several more dinners here! read more

I asked the hostess explicitly is there extra spicy mayo in here, I had it in the order notes, she said yes. I got home, no spicy mayo... great. Watch your bill! They charge more for your drinks than is presented on the menu. When you complain, the "manager" gives you a sob story about how prices have gone up and they are losing money. Then they blame the poor server for not telling you the actual price is more than the menu. NOPE! When you call them on that BS they say they haven't had time to change the menu. VERY DISAPPOINTED. We adore Sushi En and frequent it often before our Broadway Series shows. However we will not be returning any time soon. We had a reservation for Friday 4/25 for 6pm. When we arrived it was totally full, no open tables. We waited at the check in desk for 10 minutes and NOT ONE person came to check us in or check on us. Even if they would have checked on us the restaurant was completely full so there was no tables available to accommodate our reservation. We even tried to call and they turned the phones off and we were unable to get through. Why take reservations if you do not intend to honor them? read more

I'm so impressed with Sushi En and so happy it exists in Playhouse Square. So many restaurants in this area closed during the height of the pandemic, including the predecessor of this location, Sung's House. The inside is snug and I imagine this spot can fill up quickly, so don't chance walking in if its a busy night. I ate at Sushi En twice during the Cleveland International Film Festival and most plainly, was just so happy they existed. Sushi En is more casual and quite literally connected to the theaters. I love sushi, and when my favorite sushi place downtown closed recently, I was devastated. But, I may have a new place! I was pleasantly surprised that the prices here were so fair. You would think because of their proximity to the theaters they'd be wildly inflated, but they aren't. I was with a small group of friends and we ordered a bunch of rolls to share and I liked every single one. The presentation was lovely! They do huge sushi boats and adorn plates with flowers. The service tonight was absolutely horrendous. The restaurant was over flowing. There were two servers to cover the whole place. I made the mistake of asking one server to take our order. Bad move. She then proceeded to totally ignore us/avoid us to the point that I had to walk my own order over to the sushi bar. No drink order. No water refill. This is one of the best hidden gems in Playhouse Square. This was my third time here and every time has been exceptional. The service is wonderful, all of the staff are super friendly and attentive. Then there is the food. It is absolutely phenomenal. I've had their gzoyo appetizer, a few different sushi rolls, and the chicken bibimbap. Each one has been delicious and very filling.
