I can't believe I wrote my last review for this place 8 years ago! It's been on our regular rotation ever since but we went last night and found it is under NEW OWNERSHIP. The place looks great! Fresh paint, some new lighting and cherry blossom decor- it's beautiful! We found that some of the items on the menu have been crossed out and no longer available, such as the pork pockets (DH's favorite- the best in the city according to him) and a few other things. We decided to get Gyoza to start, then we got sushi and ordered our usuals: Jasmine Roll, Red Dragon Roll, Traditional Spicy Salmon Roll, and an order of Salmon Nigiri. It was a lot, I'll admit, and we didn't finish it all. The gyoza were fried but a little soft, yet still tasty. The nigiri was unusual. The salmon wasn't sliced properly so it was impossible to bite through! I've never had that happen before, but I had no pull at it with my fingers to get it to break! The other rolls were OK, but something about them was a little different and I couldn't quite tell what it was- they just tasted different and not quite as good as we've had in the past. Maybe just an off night. Next time we'll try our Korean favorites to see how they compare. Service was great and the young server who waited on us was very attentive and friendly. read more

Recently, we went to Sushi Express for a Saturday lunch. They had steady traffic, which was nice to see. Conner was the solo server so he was running around quite a bit. Dad and Hubby shared the Tempura Appetizer and the Galbi Tang, which is soup with short ribs. We all shared the Spider Roll, LA Galbi, and the Japchae. The ban chan (sides) are the best because they bring as much as you want. It was actually quite a lot of food that we ended up taking the Japchae home. It's the closest Korean restaurant to our home so when we need a quick fix, this is our go-to. For those in the Stone Oak area who haven't discovered Sushi Express, check them out! read more

I'm a newbie to Korean cuisine so I wanted to check out Sushi Express with the family. We started with the tempura appetizer, 2 shrimp and 4 veggies. We added another shrimp since there were 3 of us. The tempura was crunchy and not greasy. The LA Galbi had good flavor but some short rib pieces were bone with no meat. The banchan (side dishes) were plentiful. Nice that we could get refills at no additional charge. It was weird that we were given very small plates to eat family style. Shrimp Yakisoba had a good balance of shrimp, vegetables and noodles. Myself and three others visited the Sushi Express full service restaurant at 19903 Stone Oak Parkway for the very first time yesterday evening. Angie is the new owner which she stopped by our table several times to check on us. We were very impressed from the beginning of our visit to the very end. The restaurant was very clean, organized, great atmosphere, and had impeccable service by our server Faith, and an employee named Luke who helped out on the floor and with to-go orders. The food was outstanding from the appetizers our table ordered as well as our entrées which everything was reasonably priced. I highly recommend the Pot Stickers, the beef and Pork Bulgogi, Magaldi short ribs, Gyoza soup, and sushi rolls. A quick to go order for dinner consisting of a Stone Oak Roll, some gyoza, and a chicken yakimeshi. The Japanese rice (yakimeshi) with chicken was solidly made and tasted well beyond what I expected. Not greasy, quite flavorful, properly seasoned. Loved it and the portion was big enough for me to have leftovers. Next up the gyoza. Well prepared and well seasoned. Not too much nor too little. Finally the Stone Oak roll and I will be honest, I don't each sushi but my spouse seemed to enjoy it. She left nothing on her plate. I then asked, we've lived here for seven years now why haven't we eaten here more often? And I think it's because I didn't know that they had non-sushi foods. The pork pocket/ bao was really good. The pork was cooked well, the sauce was good, and the cucumber paired well with it. The lunch roll combination 3 was good. I really liked the Stone Oak roll. We decided to go here at the last min to get some korean food. Wasn't too busy on a saturday afternoon so the service was quick. The kimbap (5/5) was great! The roll is big, perfectly seasoned and subtly flavoredNice way to start the meal. The LA galbi (5/5) was amazing from the presentation the char to the flavor itself. Couldn't get enough of it with the white rice! The kimchi jiggae was a flop because the flavors were off. However our server was nice enough to take it off our ticket! The japchae w/o beef (4.5/5) was also really flavorful albeit slightly sweet. Mom had the Miami fresh roll which I couldn't comprehend nor brave enough to try but I'll take her word that it was good. Called in a takeout order for sushi- I think we got the Paradise roll and the Firecracker rolls? One was riceless, lettuce wrapped like a spring roll. The other was not overwhelmingly spicy. Fish in both was fairly portioned and seemed fresh enough. I did find it odd that it seemed the sauces for the rolls had been forgotten. Most places are pretty well versed on takeout procedures these days and most sushi places pack sauces separately on the side. My rolls were fresh and tasted okay, but dry without the sauces. Why 3 stars? Not why you might think. One, SUSHI EXPRESS, is hardly a name you give to a sushi restaurant, but not the reason for the stars. Though it did keep me from trying it for over a year. It doesn't live up to its "express" name, it took 35 minutes for me to get two rolls to go. 1 star down, So hardly an express place in that sense, but also a good thing as the sushi did taste fresh. We bought two rolls, and out of the two, we only liked one. 2nd star down, But we liked that one very much, so I will be giving this place a second try, and see if I can improve my rating. The California roll was delicious. The place Looks like a hole in the wall, but Once you enter, it is quite quaint, smells good, looks clean, and the staff was very friendly. I do plan on going back and trying other rolls. It also isn't priced to be an "express" place, it's just as pricy as any other sushi joint. I tried the California roll and the crunchy roll. (I didn't like the crunchy roll) not sure what went on top, seemed like cheese (but it wasn't) I think it just wasn't our thing. We'll see how next time goes. read more

Ask for Tino & Young Park; tell them Vonia sent you & sends her love! They are what really takes this little sushi place with such an unassuming name stand out. Both have such bubbly personalities that will make you feel welcome and excited to eat there even if you were having an otherwise bland day.  They (the husband & wife owners) are Korean, so you know the Korean dishes on the menu are excellent. Sushi rolls are always tasty. I have little advice because pretty much everything is good here. The service is always good. Tino used to come around to talk to us humble customers. Now that he has moved on to Sushi Express's second location (will update when I try there), Young does it. All waiters and waitresses make it a pleasure to dine.  The menu changes enough to make it interesting, though it is far from necessary, their food is so consistently good. An extensive 7+ page menu that might, if anything, be criticized for being too long. Japanese, Korean, with stand out American and Mexican influences. The tornado potatoes, for example, are creative and definitely fun to look at. Though tasty enough, it's the playful presentation that makes me order those again. Other dishes, like the Sundube-Jjigae are as appetizing as they are appealing to the eye. The gal I, on the other hand, is straight up savory. Always a sucker for Korean small plates, they do that here too, with all the free refills you want. The tempura here, which I have had many times in a myriad of styles (the sampler, the udon soup, in the sushi, etcetera), is consistently superior. Every other time I order tempura, there is sogginess or overcooked or too much oil. Somehow, I feel like ordering again and again to push Sushi Express into making a mistake, but nope. Order in, take out, multiple dishes, tempura is always superb. Crispy. Crunchy. Flaky. Yummy. Even dessert is memorable, namely the Oreo tempura. Although the mochi is also a great choice.  Make a visit. You will not regret it. Order blindly if you need to. Sake, beer, wine available. Even the decorations inside are notable. High ceilings, wall to wall built in bookshelves, the Koi statue and oversized Orchid that were there on my very visit over five years ago still bring a smile to my face today. read more

Don't let the generic sounding name fool you--this place is the best of the best! This is our go-to for sushi in our hood but please do not sleep on the bulgogi! The kimchi is absolute perfection, too! I appreciate the chill vibe and we've never had bad service there. They also have a few Chinese items on the menu, but you must go for the sushi and Korean cuisine. Take a few friends, order plenty of rolls and the bulgogi and you are set for a delicious experience. There's a quality about Sushi Express that has brought me back here 3 times in two weeks. Moving here from Washington state I have not yet found any place in the greater north central part of San Antonio that can do great sushi, teriyaki and Korean dishes. Every item I have eaten here it has been phenomenal. It's not a good Korean place that pays tribute to mediocre sushi just so it can have it on the menu and fulfill a guests expectations. I think this place was intentional with every menu item and the taste and freshness shows. Never left feeling the food was too heavy but also never left hungry as portions were fair for the price. Staff is attentive, nice and informative about menu items. Place is clean and ambiance strikes a good balance of not being too minimal and not being over the top with decor like many places. I did not feel like driving all the way across town and I remembered that Sushi Express serves Korean food too. I was out running errands and decided to stop by for lunch. This place hit the spot! I am so happy that I stopped here. I ordered the Kimbap, seaweed salad, and the spicy pork bulgogi. The lunch bulgogi comes with potsickers or California roll, soup, salad, rice and cucumber kimchi. I am full and very content right now. Everything was delicious and the wait staff was very attentive. The waitress even brought me some samsjaneg (sp) the gojugung and soy bean sauce. I made lettuce wraps with the bulgogi. The Kimbap was a great addition and helps cleanse my pallet between the spicy pork. I haven't been here in over a year and this meal lets me know I need to change that and come by more often. They have a counter where you can see them make the sushi and they take great care in the presentation of the food. All I can say is yummy. read more

Great family friendly spot with the combination of traditional Korean hot dishes and fresh sushi

This place is one of the best Korean/Japanese restaurants I've been to in a while. The squid stone bibimbap was delicious and full of Korean flavors. The sashimi and sushi tasted fresh and was tasty as well. I was surprised to see they had lunch specials on a Sunday from bento boxes to sushi combos! The fried mackerel was one of my personal favorites; the fish was lightly fried and perfectly seasoned. The sides was a nice compliment to the squid dish and the mackerel and I wish their was more of it! Service was slightly on the slower side but decent nonetheless. Sunday- a lot of places don't open until later in the afternoon (3-4pm) but Sushi Express was opened at noon- Came here seeing that they had both Sushi and Korean food- I was impressed at how big the Korean menu was and they had all the staple dishes that most non Korean people would consider "stinky". The casual Korean food were a little pricey (kimbop- korean version of a "sushi" roll) that is filled usually with meat or veggies was priced at $12. At regular Korean grocery stores or restaurants They cost maybe at most $7 you can push it by charging $10. Tried their Brian's hand roll and some spicy tuna roll that had shrimp tempura inside- the hand roll had a little too much rice but it was okay- and for my spicy tuna/shrimp tempura roll- the shrimp tempura was just tempura (barely any shrimp) and the spicy tuna on top didn't have too much flavor. They were both okayyy. Now the Korean food (reason why I'm giving this review 4 stars). I've been looking for place with some decent Korean food- just moved here from Chicago and it's been pretty tough finding a good spot here in SA. The side dishes they give you when ordering is not that great (but it's never fresh anywhere since it's just an after thought for every restaurant- they are free side dishes accompanying your main meal) so I never judge a restaurant by their side dishes- but anyway- I got: BibimNaenmyun: (spicy buckwheat cold noodles)- it was a good portion, the sauce was just right- sweet and spicy (wish there was a little more- a little off balance with the amount of noodles you get) but overall the noodles were cold, the sauce was tasty and the crunchy cucumbers/radish was great. TangSuYuk: think Korean version of sweet and sour pork- the sauce was great Kimchi Jigae (kimchee stew filled with tofu and pork)- this was done just right- great fermented kimchi, spiced correctly and good portion size. Great flavor to take home and recook if you have leftovers. I will definitely come back here for more Korean food. A lot of appetizers and main entrees if you're craving good Korean food at a clean restaurant. The service was great- my waiter was polite and attentive. Second visit in eight days! Delish bi bim bop with extra side toppings! The Dino roll was flavorful and just the right spicy. The staff is super friendly. Last Sunday we rolled in 15 minutes before closing and they treated us like their favorite customers. The prices are pretty comparable to most sushi restaurants. Go for the food and kindness, not for the ambiance. It's clean and everything, but some table tops are peeling and the glassware and dishes are cheap and plastic. Lunch Special for the win! Sushi Express has one of the best lunch specials in the Stone Oak area. From open to 3 PM you can choose from one of their "lunch boxes" to a sushi bar lunch. Their lunch special prices are really good & you get complimentary miso soup. I have also picked up their lunch specials to-go too. So, I believe there is no dine-in requirement to order these specials. Which is perfect for those on the go during lunch-time. My favorite lunch special roll combo to get is the Roll Combo 3. This combo comes with a California roll, their stone oak roll, and their gold dragon roll. The menu states that you get 5 pieces of each roll with the combo. I love these roll combos because you get to eat a little bit of something different in each roll instead of having to commit to just one roll. The sushi/ingredients here at Sushi Express have always been fresh the times I have dined in (which is often, haha). I love mixing their spicy mayo with their eel sauce whenever I'm eating sushi. On top of the food being delicious,​ the service is usually very quick & they are very nice. Again, this is perfect when you're stopping in during your lunch break.
