This place is great! I recently returned to Texas after living in Japan for a few years so I have tried so many places based on recommendations from others with much disappointment but I stumbled upon this place and enjoyed it. Having traveled all over the Kanto plains indulging on Japanese cuisine, this is my favorite place in San Antonio as far as taste comparison. You might be asking, "well, why didn't you give it a 5-star rating?" That is a fantastic question! The great rating given only falls short of excellent due to the "San Antonio standard" for all sushi restaurants here because they all have so much fusion with non-traditional ingredients, thus lacking a truly authentic menu. To off-set that and truly give a wow factor to make up for that pitfall would be selling the delicious flavored Kit-Kats you can find at any Seiyu Supermarket across Japan, or maybe the seasonal Sakura (Cherry Blossom) Sake or other Sakura flavored treats. All in all, I will be a frequent visitor here, either pick up or dine in; highly recommend! read more

I recently discovered this hidden gem after living right next to it for 2 years. It's very quaint and quiet. I've been twice in the past week. Each time it was not too busy. Although they are looking for new hires, everything was pleasant and food really good. I love the house salad with ginger dressing. Wish I could just have a huge bowl of that only. Sushi is delicious and fresh, but the korean food is where it's at! Great authentic korean menu and you can tell they are passionate about sharing that side with you. The fried mackerel is fantastic, my mom's favorite is the tteokbokki, the jjampong and delicious and spicy. I really like this place for many reasons! The food is great and the choices are many! I've had noodles, katzu and edamame, seaweed salad and of course sushi of all kinds. Never, ever been disappointed with the choices I've made. The manager/owner is very friendly and comes around to talk and get to know their customers. Prices are also decent and great for lunch. Now I thought I'd show my son and his family this cute place for dinner, and not sure if that was a wise idea. My son ordered a chicken (not sure what it was called) and it had a bad smell of fish (maybe it had gone bad) and so he then ordered the steak...but it was pancake thin and for the price they asked for it...NOT worth it! It was a dinner plate and all there was on the plate was the wafer steak...meh. We did go back for lunch again because I believe in this place even though I was disappointed by their dinner. We really enjoyed our lunch this past Saturday. After a day of house hunting, we popped in to refuel. The kiddos got sushi combos 3 and 4 and devoured them. Hubby ordered the spicy pork bulgogi (substituting the california roll- bleh!- with potstickers) lunch box and I got the beef bulgogi made spicy (same deal with the California roll sub). Our lunch boxes came with a miso salad, miso soup, potstickers, protein, and steamed rice. We also ordered a spicy tuna roll to share. My complaints: the salad greens were brown and dried. The beef bulgogi was overly peppered, and the potstickers lacked flavor. The service was lacking. We had to repeat our request for forks for the kids and small saucers for our soy sauce. We were all happy with our meal and we walked out $60 poorer, but full. I think we'll venture around town to find other locations, settling on Sushi Express if we can't find better. read more

We had been wanting to come here for a while, we literally live 2 minutes down the road. I'm so happy we did. The food is soooo good. The mild veggie ramen is to die for. Super flavorful (which many veggie ramen lack that sometimes) the rolls are chunky and well served and my husbands teriyaki steak was served perfectly cooked over a skillet with tons of onions! Yum!! I love the combos here and the lunch specials! I've been here a few times now, each time trying something different. My first visit was for the korean Sundubu Jjigae seafood soup. It's hard to find authentic korean restaurants and although this was a little pricey at $10+ per entree, options are fairly limited in San Antonio. We also had some sushi as well, which was okay -- but I'm really here for the korean cuisine! I've also had the bulgogi and LA galbi. It was delicious and came with some banchan or 'side dishes' as they like to call them (the real reason to eat korea food!). The service is great and the place is very clean and bright. Love it! My husband and I have been in San Antonio for a year now and have not found anything close to good bulgogi until last night. He is Korean and was so excited to finally taste something more authentic!!!!!! I ventured further out on my dining trail for Sushi and discovered Sushi Express in the Hills of Stone Oak. I saw the expansive list of Sushi on the menu and had a few to try, but after overhearing a customer state that the wait was so long he wanted it off of his bill and would not be waiting any longer, I opted instead for Bulgolgi. The Yelpers who visited this establishment did me a solid as I had several pictures to choose from, but according to my waitress the Sushi orders were backed up and it would be more beneficial to choose a selection that was prepared in the kitchen and I agreed... The Meal: My date and I dined on the Bulgogi accompanied by a Delicious Raspberry Tea and appetizer consisting of piping hot eggrolls. (Also Delicious) As a recent transplant from Yongsang, Korea I guess I had my hopes up very high thinking I would be transported back to Seoul after I took my first bite of Bulgogi. The meat seemed almost boiled as it was very light grey in color and very soft to bite. Typically the Bulgogi I've dined on has a slight crunch, soft center and caramelized coating from the sauces it's marinated in once it's been tossed around a bit in a cast iron skillet or hot plate. This meat was tender but definitely nothing I'd feel I need to try again as I've prepared much better on my George Foreman Grill and home skillet. (Thanks Pinterest) The prices were very affordable and our meal did come out quickly but by the end of the meal I didn't even want to take home my leftovers.... (0_o) I might add that I was severely disappointed that I ordered Sake from the Free Yelp check-in and only realized after we were gone that our server neglected to bring it out.. Don't be fooled by the name. This place is way better than "express". And they actually have both sushi and extensive Korean options. My friend and I came here on a whim after a daytrip in the hill country and I'm so glad we did! I didn't care to go in because I thought it was going to be a chain due to its name. But I immediately knew I was wrong about my impression. The ambiance is modern and hip. We sat at the bar. Our server jasmine was super bubbly and attentive. We started off with spicy edamame which was deff decent though a bit too spicy. My friend ordered the Korean noodle soup and I got myself a bowl of seafood tofu soup. My order also comes with 7 side dishes, nice! They brought me a raw egg to crack and mix in my seafood tofu soup. That was awesome. I definitely enjoyed my hot asian soup which has always been my comfort food. I tried my friend's noodle, it was very tasty too. The portion was huge but she finished it in no time. Overall my dining experience was far more than "express", it was excellent. I think they should consider changing their name to delicious sushi and Korean or something along the lines, lol. Keeping with a current theme, my girlfriend and I decided to try something a little new and thankfully we were pleasantly surprised! My girlfriend and I are gonna be moving very soon so we came to the conclusion that we wanted to try some new restaurants closer to where we will be living. Next we were greeting by some delicious smells! OR maybe I was just hungry... who knows! After reviewing the menu it was clear they had a little for everyone including the kiddos! There are many kids out there that would not want to try sushi or even look at that kind of food.. LUCKILY this place serves a peanut butter and jelly sushi roll! The roll itself is bread shaped into a sushi roll and filled with the peanut butter and jelly. It seemed like a great choice for the kids and also fun since it looks just like the regular sushi rolls. I decided to go with a little lunch special and it was much bigger than I expected. I ordered the sesame chicken since I wasn't really in the mood for sushi but it came with a very good size scoop of white rice, two gyoza, and a heaping of chicken! The rice was a perfect soft texture and the chicken had a nice crispy inside with juicy inside. Now the gyoza, WAS THE BOMB! A lot of times gyoza is a little crispy on the outside while softer in the middle and are often under filled. That was not the case today. The gyoza had a similar outer texture to an egg roll with the perfect amount of filling! This place definitely has some pleasing choices for very affordable prices! To provide a little context, I recently moved to the San Antonio area from the Sacramento area in California, where All-You-Can-Eat/AYCE cheap-ish sushi is widespread and genuinely pretty good. So, I have been having a hankering for sushi for a good while now. My sister and I came across Sushi Express while we were house hunting in the Stone Oak area and made a mental note to try it, but didn't get around to it until a few months later. We came here today, a Wednesday, during lunch with our grandmother and my son, stroller in tow. Sushi Express is not the biggest spot in town, and it took a moment for someone to direct us that we could sit where we wanted. However, the wait staff was super attentive, interacted nicely with my son, and brought me hot water when I needed to warm up a bottle. The atmosphere was very nice - they had walls of shelves that are reminiscent of the library walls in Beauty and the Beast except that they're full of liquor instead of books. Moving onto the food, this is where the place earns the five stars I've given it. First of all, I have a food allergy to something in imitation crab, so it has been a long time since I could eat a California roll - they use snow crab, and I am not in anaphylactic shock, I am glad to report. My grandma got the Beef Bulgogi lunch, the equivalent of a Bento box, and really enjoyed it. I tried some, and the meat was tender and was very flavorful. My sister and I each got sushi combo plates that came with 3 different rolls (5 pieces each) - each of our plates was less than $10. The fish was good quality, and the portions were filling. Also, while we didn't avail of the option, it looked like they packed them into nice to-go boxes if you ordered for takeout. When we return, we might shell out more for dinner or some of their Korean dishes just to try them. All in all, it was a nice lunch for one of the few times I have a weekday off of work to spend with family and we might make a habit of this. A great place! I am a huge fan of Sushishima, but this place seems to have a bit bigger choice of certain fish. I love caviar and you name it - they have it all! I live Salmon Tower, and so far, his place does a much better job than Sushishima or Zushi Sushi. They used to have a different chef, which I happened to like much more, but the new one is still great at what he does! I wanted to place an order for pickup to it will be ready by the time I got there. Good thing it took about 10 mins for my meal to be prepared. Fresh and all. This is the second time my husband and I came here, I would give this place 4 stars but this second time the service was lack luster. I'll start with the good parts. I LOVE the garden roll compared to other sushi places, you get 10 pieces for half the traditional price, which is awesome! With the stone pot bowl, our food came out steaming hot and fresh the whole time. All of the ingredients are great quality. This time however, we told the male server that we were sharing the stone pot, and he brought the pot but never brought plates. We waiting for about 3 minutes. Also he gave us a plastic cup for the sauce, last time we had a little bowl with plenty of sauce. And then we had to wait for silverware as well. Maybe it would been better if we actually went to the restaurant and ate there. My kids liked beef bulgogi, and the spicy squid dish had good flavor. But it was hard to find squid in the dish - it was mostly vegetables.
