We ordered the sashimi mix $18. Scallop is one of my favorite sashimi/nigiri items. Unfortunately, the scallop almost seemed cooked on outside. It was kind of tough. The "Special Big Roll" $20 is indeed big. Probably the biggest sushi roll I've had not including sushi burritos. There was a huge hit of mayo mayo on top. The tuna was a little bit stringy and the texture was not quite there. The pink ginger is soft. It should have more of a crisp texture. Not my favorite, but a commendable effort for Modesto Sushi. read more

I got the teriyaki chicken lunch plate it was huge couldn't even finish it. I think it was 13.50 for the whole plate with the lunch hour special. This was our second visit to Sushi Garden and they did not disappoint. This time I tried the 3 piece Tempura Shrimp plate with 3 large shrimp and a delicious crisp selection of vegetables and steamed rice on the side. My other half ordered the Tempura Scallop Roll. We shared our meals and agreed both lunches were excellent however, this sushi roll was one of the best we have had at any sushi place in Modesto! I was in town for work and I came here with two other coworkers for lunch. MAN, I chose the right place! This place had a lunch special and MY GOODNESS, their portions are HUGE! I got their Chicken Katsu lunch special. It came with tempura, soup, CA roll, rice, and salad. This was all for less than $10! I seriously was STUNNED when food came out. I saw how big my lunch late was and I couldn't even finish my lunch. I took the rest home for dinner. Anyway, the place was quite busy during lunch time. We ended up being seated at the bar. We ordered and food was out within 15-20 minutes. Everything tasted so good! I quickly became a fan of this place. I'd give them a 2 star for poor customer service. They will get another rating for their over priced food. Down to one star now. Sushi nicely presentable but over priced. The food, as usual, is plentiful and tasty. The service used to be very efficient and professional. A uniform would help some of the newer servers to look more professional. Even a simple apron. The restaurant used to feel very upscale, but having a server in very casual street clothes with a random baseball hat doesn't give that vibe. Our glasses are not refilled on a timely basis, things are forgotten and orders have been wrong. A question from the server of the need for forks and providing them before hand (particularly if you are having a meal) would ensure the customer isn't waiting while their food grows cold. Take notes! All good servers can and do. Then work the plan. Bring the drinks right away. If the food is taking longer than usual check back and let us know when it's coming. While you're there check what's needed and get it done. There is a lot of standing around or not being visible. Times when the whole dining room is without a server if you need one. If plates have been pushed back or set aside come and get them. The whole restaurant needs a little update and a good straightening up. read more

Where do I even start?! This place has the best sushi and the best customer service!! They are so friendly and attentive. If you want any slight modifications in the sushi they'll accommodate. I can see why people in Modesto like this place. It's clean, they've got a decent menu, and there aren't really too many sushi places in town to choose from. Here's what I like about this place: it's close to my house. Here's what I don't like about the place: every single time I've come here, the service is slow, they screw up on my sushi orders, never come by to refill our drinks and our server is never to be found. I don't ask for much, but one of the reasons I look forward to going out to eat in a restaurant is to have the luxury of having someone wait on me. In exchange for excellent service, I am an EXCEPTIONAL tipper. We sat at the sushi bar and the sushi chef was pleasant although he did give us two rolls which we did not order (but, was extremely apologetic for this mistake). Our waitress, on the other hand, needs to be schooled on Server Etiquette 101. I had to ask 3 other servers to ask our waitress to come by our table on 5 different occasions to refill drinks, bring extra napkins, bring soy sauce, etc. Our waitress seemed more interested in entertaining a table of her friends and going outside to talk on her cell phone that paying attention to patrons who would give their final evaluation on her service by leaving a tip. One moment that resonated with me during my latest visit to Sushi Garden is the fact that once her friends left, she came by more frequently very rudely asking, "You're not going to be ordering anything else, are you?". Our bill came to just under $100 for two people. I tipped the sushi chef $30 and left nothing for the waitress. Because sushi options are very limited in Modesto, I may eventually come back to pay Sushi Garden a visit just to see if things have changed. But I know that my best bet to find GOOD sushi would be to travel either towards the Bay or up north to Sacramento where "little" things like service and courtesy are held in the highest regard. read more

Our group worked on the new Sushi Garden website theSushiGarden.com (that's my lil disclosure, but this review is definitely legit!) definitely check out their new website. For a while my impression was that Modesto, was a lot closer than I really had thought. Once we got to Sushi Garden it was well worth the long drive from Union City. The restaurant is quite inviting and the staff was very quick on their feet in responding upon requests. We had ordered all the popular dishes on their menu and whipped out all our cameras and took a bunch of pictures. I'm amazed how fresh the fish is especially since Sushi Garden is so far from San Francisco, where they get their daily supply of fresh fish. By far this is the best place to get sushi within the area, hands down. The sushi is also on par with Dublin's Amakara. I have eaten at Sushi Garden a few times and have been pleased with the sushi. Unfortunately they close at 2:00pm after lunch so if you are late you are out of luck. That happened to me the first time I tried to eat there. The menu is not large which is not a bad thing. My favorite Sushi restaurant in Modesto has two pages of specialty rolls plus the usual selections available. Sushi Garden only had one page of specialty rolls. Overall: I'd come back for the fast service and consistently well made food. Arrived here with a group of 6. We ordered everything from Gyoza, to Modesto, Lion King, to Baked Muscles, and Sashimi. For some reason the LomiLomi is not on the menu but Delicious. It does have a kick in the Salmon & Cucumber roll. The Modesto roll was a fresh change from what I'm used to with Almonds, 5 types of Fish, and a creamy White sauce. Probably the best sushi in the area. Which isn't saying much, actually. It's just the best spot out of a bunch of mediocre sushi places around Modesto. The chirashi comes with 18 different pieces of fish with sushi rice and costs about $17. This was actually pretty enjoyable, but a few of the pieces that it comes with aren't really worth it. They throw in a couple of fish cakes and what not to add up to the 18. Still enjoyed it, but would have liked more raw fish on there. I also had a couple of rolls there on previous visits, and nothing has ever truly impressed me. Everything is decent, but nothing outstanding.
