Probably the best sushi in the area. Which isn't saying much, actually. It's just the best spot out of a bunch of mediocre sushi places around Modesto. The chirashi comes with 18 different pieces of fish with sushi rice and costs about $17. This was actually pretty enjoyable, but a few of the pieces that it comes with aren't really worth it. They throw in a couple of fish cakes and what not to add up to the 18. Still enjoyed it, but would have liked more raw fish on there. I also had a couple of rolls there on previous visits, and nothing has ever truly impressed me. Everything is decent, but nothing outstanding. I've eaten at a number of different sushi restaurants in the area and I've yet to find the same quality of food. This restaurant is one of the best in Modesto. I've been to other sushi restaurants around the area and nothing really compares. I've gone in several times and haven't had a bad experience yet. I went in today with family for an early Mother's Day dinner. Matthew, our server, was very attentive and kept checking on our table to put our order in and to see if we were good on water and tea. As for the food, everything was delicious yet again. The tako kimchee and edamame were tasty appetizers. One thing I love about this place is they let you create your own roll, and portions are always huge. One roll I would definitely recommend is the Lobster Roll, which is on their special menu. It's a bit pricy, but I think it's worth every single cent. Other rolls that I have ordered before include the Tiger roll, Spider roll, Dragon roll, and their Curry roll. I've been coming here for the last 10 years. One of the trustworthy sushi places in Modesto. I've never had a bad experience with the seafood. Their fried squid appetizer is awesome with a tasty soy-vinegar sauce. My favorite rolls are Lobster roll and Dragon roll. Lobster roll is one of the most expensive rolls but it is delicious. Dragon roll is my go-to because I love eel and the teriyaki-like sauce. Rainbow roll includes raw salmon and tuna on top so beware if you don't like sashimi. Lobster and dragon are both cooked rolls. The reason for the 3 star review rather than 4 star is because over the last 10 years their customer service and quality of food have been downgrading. Upon walking into the restaurant, there are just stares and no greetings. We ordered the salad and ALL of the lettuce was browning. Why would you serve BROWN lettuce to your paying customers. How embarrassing. So stick to the fried food or sushi and don't expect the best service. read more

Only the Tiger was part of their lunch special menu (so instead of being $12 it was $8.95). Overall, the taste was "meh." Didn't hit the spot for our sushi craving. It was like "oh, ok... sushi" but not like "OHHHH, yum! Sushi!" Get what I'm saying? The sushi selection is small and pricey, especially for the quality you get. Was quoted 25min, several people were seated before us (parties of 2, just like us) and when we went back in to get an updated quote the lady apologized and said she forgot about us and that she will clean off a table. Meanwhile a tall gentleman with black longish hair came and turned off the "open sign" and put a "sorry we're closed" sign on the door. When the host passed by him she mentioned she had one more table and he was pretty annoyed from the looks of it. He then proceeded to say "you guys can take a seat now". This month our First Tuesday Dinner had to be moved to the First Wednesday. We were joined by Alana, another daughter, and we came to Joan's favorite Sushi Restaurant as it was her turn to pick and her turn to pay! I had never eaten at Sushi Garden. I walked in and was pleasantly surprised by the decor - very chic, well lit and cozy. There is a lovely sushi bar as well as well placed tables for bigger parties. Because I was the late arrival I had to scan the place for my party and because the restaurant is nicely lit without being too bright I was able to spot my group within seconds of my arrival. I chose the Sample Plate. Because there is not a lot I can eat, I chose the broiled salmon and tempura (shrimp and veggies). What a great meal! The tempura was so light and so crisp, it was easy on my sensitive tummy. The salmon? Delicious enough for me to wish I had just ordered a bigger portion of just the salmon for my meal. The service was wonderful, partly because Joan is a regular there and their owner makes a lovely fuss over her. We were taken care of quickly, efficiently and with great kindness. The only down side? The sound. I don't know what it is about the acoustics but it made hearing the person sitting right across from me difficult and I am afraid I may have made dinner uncomfortable for neighboring diners by speaking too loud. Was excited to go back to one of my favorite restaurants. Since the 2020 Covid shut down, we have not been there for a while. Was shocked how bad the food was! We ordered three take out dinners. The potato salad was skimpy grey and very old. The fried shrimp is completely different from before - shaped like a fish stick and zero flavor. The California rolls were so smelly - like cat food. This was the first time that I have ever been to Sushi Garden. This is a very nice place with very friendly staff. Service was excellent. We had the usual wait for a table due to being very busy so that was acceptable. My friend ordered 2 sushi rolls which looked to me like 12 pieces each. One was the asparagus roll and the other was the shrimp roll. I'm not a sushi fan so didn't taste either of them but she said they were very good. I had the tempura plate with shrimp and veggies and I also had the steamed shumi appetizer. My food was absolutely terrific. Was more than I could eat so will have a good lunch tomorrow. I've eaten here about 5 times, and each experience has fluctuated. The first time, I had their sashimi. It was an excellent assortment beyond the big three or tuna, salmon, and yellowtail. It was marred however by the fish being just below room temperature. The second time, I tried the rolls. Some were quite tasty, but all around about average. Though it turned my opinion around The third time, however, of the four rolls we ordered, most featured the same mayo sauce. Sushi Garden seems to depend on their sauces, sort of like Miki tends to. It made most of them taste the same. It is because of that that it really makes me wonder why this place gets such high raves when it's maybe just above average. The temperature issues and a lot of the rolls featuring the same sauces, many of which aren't mentioned on the menu order, make it hard for me to really get behind them. So aside from the prices, I don't see why this place gets so packed. I know sushi selection in Modesto is limited, but I would rate Osaka over Sushi Garden in terms of shear quality of product and staff friendliness (they could use more raw rolls though, and are a touch pricier), and Miki for shear variety (though they also pour on the sauce and have poor service). Sushi Garden is roughly third place. I have gone for lunch, and would relegate them to that solely. The prices are a good value, and the combos are huge. Having the Tiger roll or scallop roll alone limits the problem. trying the sashimi again has me noticing the variety, while still good, going down a bit, but thankfully, the fish is colder. I've never tried the custom option, but appreciate it being there. Decor is nice, but nothing special. Service is about average. Prices are fair. Sushi Garden is a good sushi place, and a good deal for lunch, but it's hardly the best in town. read more

I'm wondering if I went to the same restaurant that all the others are fawning over...I double checked the address and- yes- this is the same one. I wouldn't call this place"amazing" or "fantastic". I'm really not being hypercritical...my experience just wasn't the best. My first impression was a good one....clean place, busy- all pluses for a sushi restaurant. My daughter and I were seated promptly. Another plus. Then we started scouring the menu. Meh. All typical sushi fare- nothing that jumped off the page and screamed "Order Me!". So I figured I'd go with what appeared to be the house roll, The Garden Roll. I should've read the menu closer to see that this roll is fried. (I have had fried rolls before, like for instance at Bluefin Sushi in Tracy, and they can be pretty good...This was not the case) I wouldn't call this roll "fried", per say, but maybe "incinerated" would be a better description. I couldn't even eat half of it. My daughter's Chicken Teriyaki plate was okay. But I was taken aback to see mashed potatoes on her plate. Seriously? Weird. If I'm in the area, I might venture back to give this place another shot. But I am certainly not going to drive out of my way again to eat here. Came back for dinner with my friend after helping him get a TV (he thought bringing a tech nerd like myself would help). We were starving so we arrive and were advised of a 15 min wait. No big deal but the waiting "couch" was very uncomfy (grown men aren't supposed to do partial Indian-style sitting). I tried to make the best of it although my knees felt like they were being twisted like a pretzel. These shenanigans went on for what felt more like 20 mins then the hostess took us to our table. We were seated in a separated section in the back corner of the main dining area, perhaps they didn't think we were as hot as the plastic men and women dotting the main dining area. In any case the area was much quieter and felt somewhat secluded a la a wall of bamboo. It took a bit for the wait staff to figure out who was getting our drinks but they were on it after that. Predominantly we were waited on by a rather course waitress however her "helpers" were nice. Ordered a fried soft shell crab for the appetizer, Lion King Roll for my main and Green Tea Mochi Balls for dessert. The soft shell crab was ok, I was expecting more flavor before having to use the sauce that came with it. My main was very tasty with it's California Roll base, colorful sauces and fish eggs adorning it. I especially loved the garlic mayo and spicy mayo zigzagging the plate, wish the whole dish was drenched in them (glutton, yes!). I was disappointed in the Green Tea Mochi, didn't pick up on flavors I was expecting and the shell wasn't as gummy as most mochi should be. While it's not in my normal sushi rotation, I don't mind coming back but I know what to order next time. read more

Buffet Man sez: This place has good Japanese food and rivals some ot the places I used to eat back in Hawaii. Surprisingly good sushi and the true test of places like this... chicken katsu. Light, flakey panko breading is the sign of well prepared katsu and theirs is good. Can order chicken breast meat katsu and it's nice and lean. Sauce is great, so it works well. Their combo plates are really generous and comes with sushi in addition to the combo entree selections. I leave satisfied every time... so you KNOW they're generous. I need to get me some of that now!! STATUS UPDATE: Revalidated this review tonight. Tempura platter for $11.50 includes 4 jumbo shrimp and 7 large pieces of veges- broccoli, bell pepper, sweet potato, and zucchini. Also includes potato salad and fresh broccoli and baby carrots on the side. The bowl of rice and miso soup were also as I expected it... which reveals the true quality of the place. Since I arrived in Modesto from the Bay I have had some very mediocre and down right boring sushi experiences, with no real hope on landing an amazing sushi house... until last night. I arrived and the restaurant was already buzzing. I was greeted by a cheerful hostess that asked me if I was meeting someone, which I was and directed me to her location. As soon as my butt was in the chair a waitress ran up to see if I needed a drink, beer of course. My friend and I were introduced to a regular by one of the sushi chefs who gave us full detail about everything on the menu, all we had to do was decide.. arg! Sitting at the bar really gives you a good prospective on how fresh the fish is and how dedicated the chefs are preparing it. Always a good experience watching them and engaging them with a bit of humor. Between the two of us we ordered the Tiger Roll, Tempura Philly Roll, Hamachi, Unagi, and Salmon. The specialty rolls came out first and were the most gigantic sushi rolls I have ever witnessed in all of sushi! I didn't think my chopsticks were prepared to grip these monsters, but when I did... heaven in my mouth. The fresh fish selections we chose were to die for, the yellowtail melted in my mouth and I was one happy girl. The service and attention to detail are definitely something I look forward to again. The sushi roll I ordered was good. However, they did not put enough spicy tuna inside. It was supposed to be a rainbow roll but with spicy tuna inside. It's that one sushi restaurant. You know. Behind Marie Calledars, next to Ace Hardware. Oh and look mom! They have real pictures of koi here. I guess that's what I get for looking for a good sushi place in Modesto. To be honest though, I was really suprised. It was very very good. Not nearly as good as what I can usually get from the huge Japanese population in SF, but nonetheless pretty great. My mom and I went here on a whim, she said her friends frequent it and was poised to try anything they do. ("After all, they go to Germany") She ordered some tempura, I ordered nigiri maguro and the philidelphia tempura roll. The nigiri maguro was fresh and very delectable. I order this at just about every sushi restaurant I can since it's a good way to figure out how fresh/good the sushi will be. Miso was average. I've had better, I've had worse, no biggie. They did have a lot of tofu in it which could lend to a slight lack of flavor, but I digress. Then came the sashimi. After we both had our pieces, the tempura came. Among the more traditional skewered shrimp and sliced cucumber, they had fried sweet potatoes and broccoli. Different but good. The weird thing to me is that they put a side of mashed potatoes and broccoli with carrots for the side/garnish. It was interesting. Following it all and concluding the meal were the salmon rolls. They were amazing. The cream cheese inside the fried goodness really made the roll something else. The salmon was extremely flavorful and excellent. Next time I visit my parents, we'll be back. Sushi Garden has yet to fail me. This is still my favorite sushi restaurant. I've been to plenty of sushi restaurants in the Bay Area and Sushi Garden is still my number one sushi place. Why is it my favorite? Because they have the Create Your Own Roll and I love that I can put whatever my stomach desires on it. The Tempura Roll is amazing as well. The house salad here is like no ordinary salad you would have at any other sushi place. It comes with a very delicious salad dressing that I've never had anywhere else. I love coming here during lunch because they have great lunch specials. The atmosphere is very upbeat, clean, and well decorated. The service is always friendly, but can be a little slow at times. The restaurant fills up very quickly especially during dinner so you have to arrive early if you want to be seated right away. We entered the restaurant and nobody greeted or acknowledged us, and after about 5 minutes, I approached one worker and asked if they were still open, and of course they were, it was still over an hour until closing, and followed up by saying we would like a table for 3. The lady seemed disinterested and by the time she might have come to her senses, we were already gone and headed to the Mexican restaurant across the parking lot.
