My husband and I wanted to escape the heat with some sushi. We were on our way back from down south and wanted to try something new on our way back to north county. I searched yelp and saw this place. What got me was that they had sushi and salt and pepper wings! The place was empty so we had our pick at a table. The vibe was very casual. The owner was our server and he mentioned he was short staffed and his sushi chef wasn't in. I was so bummed since I really wanted sushi. He saw I was disappointed and said he would make me a roll. We decided to only get one roll to not overwhelm him. We also got the drunken noodles and the salt and pepper wings (of course!!!) THE WINGS WERE THE BEST!!! I could go there and just get a few orders and be satisfied. The wings were big and so crispy. They had a little curry flavor that gave it a nice touch. I've never had drunken noodles before. The meat was cooked just right and seasoned well. The 911 roll was perfect! Just the right amount of spicy. The chilli oil gave the roll a unique flavor. Sometimes it's nice to not have sushi that's drowned in spicy mayo. (And I loveeeee spicy mayo) Whenever I'm back in that area, I can deffinitly see us going back. They had a few other things I want to try.

Our spread- beef noodle soup, green beans, chili fish, salt and pepper chicken wings, and Mongolian beef (one of my favorites)

The service here was great! They had a constant stream of takeout orders throughout the night, but still served our food rather quickly. Our group of 4 ate a ton, but still managed to bring home leftovers. The salt and pepper chicken wings were perfectly crispy, and the Mongolian beef with mushrooms and onions remains one of my favorite dishes. The chili fish was a perfect amount of spicy and was very tender. The green beans were well cooked and had a decent amount of meat. Unfortunately, the one dish that keeps it from being 5 stars for me was the beef noodle soup. The broth was not as rich as the last time that we ate it, and the beef could have been more tender. We really liked the server that we had because she was very attentive and even joked with us! I'd definitely return here the next time that I crave Chinese food.

Super flavorful! We got the chefs special black pepper, salt and pepper wings, and Taiwanese soup, all hands down amazing! Their beef is one of the most tender I've ever had and the portions are very generous. I'm so glad we tried this place. I highly recommend and I'm definitely coming back here again.

My go to place when I crave for authentic Taiwanese beef noodle soup. Definitely the best in town! They enhanced the broth with more flavor compared to the previous Zen restaurant. Service is welcoming and attentive, the ambiance makes you feel like you are eating in a Taiwanese family noodle spot. My girlfriend loves their sweet chill shrimp. The heavy sweet and spicy flavor hits the spot!

This restaurant used to be Zen Asian Bistro. Some of the items, such as the Taiwanese Beef noodle soup, is still on the new menu. We don't know if it's the same cooks. The portions are on the small side. They were a little bland but that might be because we ordered unbreaded chicken and vegetables as our proteins. Seems like quality and fresh ingredients were used. Service from the older gentleman was good. He was very nice and attentive to our group.

Glad to see this new spot open in the same place as Zen Modern, with a very similar menu. Our friendly server, Hector, told us that the cousin of Zen's Taiwanese owner runs this spot so we felt confident getting Taiwanese beef noodle soup here. The space has high ceilings, good lighting and is next door to a 420 shop so there's great potential for a circular business model here hehe. I came for the sweet chili shrimp, which I'd enjoyed at Zen in the past. BF and I also got a spider roll and the 牛肉麵湯。The soup was the best version we've tried in SD. The broth is rich and satisfying, and there are plenty of juicy beef chunks. BF said the flat noodles are not the authentic type but we still enjoyed them. The sweet chili shrimp is not easy to find in SD. Compared to the Zen version, this one was slightly less crispy and less spicy but still hit the spot. The spider roll was huge and tasted proper. Overall, I really appreciate the variety of pan Asian options here, all pretty well executed, as well as the good service from Hector.

Yeah this place is bomb. Definitely coming back and the server was very nice to let us sit and chat afterwards. She also showed us the Chinese menu which most Asian restaurants don't offer up front unless you know, you know? Very chill inside.

Finally MEIN ST ASIAN KITCHEN re-opened. They used to be in Little Italy Food hall, where its easy for us to drive to whenever we are craving their Soups. It's my son's Favorite place to get his soup the TAIWANESE BEEF Beef . Our other favorite here was the HOKKAIDO SEAFOOD, MEIN STREET So finding out that they re-opened we are very excited to go visit them. Our son was out of town so only me and my wife went. We are so excited that we can't wait for the Menu to be handed to us, but when our nice server handed us the Menu and saw that the other soups we like are not in the Menu with the exception of the Mein Street. We asked if the 2 soups are not in the Menu because they are just in their Soft opening, but the answer we found out that the other 2soups we have been getting when they were in Little Italy won't be anymore in their menu. That's a bit of a turn-off. So my wife and I just ordered their Taiwanese Beef soup and shared it. Upon our soup being delivered to our table I noticed right away the noodles had changed too, I'm not saying it's bad but we preferred the noodles they used to have in Little Italy. It tasted the same as their Menu, it's still delicious. Their new location is a bit far from where we live but we will make a stop still whenever we have a chance because their Taiwanese Beef soup is delicious. Very tasty broth and tender meat and meat portions were generous .

What Mein St posts as their teriyaki chicken

Ordered thru Doordash and the food received looked NOTHING like what was advertised. No glaze on the teriyaki chicken, just a bunch of chicken chopped up into small pieces swimming in something wet. The Tofu "dish" came in a plastic soup container and resembles tofu slop. Also nothing like the picture posted by Mein Street. I don't know what happened over there, but there's no way I'll be wasting my money there ever again. Because it was Doordash I can only get a 10% refund. Pretty expensive food for the dogs tonight, but that's all it looks like anyway.

Mein St. Asian Kitchen - Elevated Asian Fusion in Carmel Mountain Tucked away in a small plaza in Carmel Mountain, Mein St. Asian Kitchen offers a rare and eclectic mix of Asian fusion in an area dominated by chain eateries. Formerly known as Zen, the restaurant has undergone a recent rebrand and ownership change, bringing with it a refreshed menu that blends Chinese, Japanese, and even a touch of Mexican-inspired cuisine. Typical Chinese food are available while there would be a sushi bar for sushi, rolls and sashimi. The interior is simple and casual, with minimal décor and a TV typically playing sports. While the dining space isn't large, the atmosphere is laid-back, and staff are incredibly friendly, regularly checking in to ensure everything is to your liking and keeping the space spotless. Indoor dining is cozy, but it does not appear to be pet-friendly. --- What I Tried: Zen Chicken Wings Lightly dusted with house spices, black pepper, onions, and scallions, these wings are juicy, tender, and flavorful. The spice and salt levels are well-balanced, though the black pepper is heavier than expected--something to note if you're sensitive to heat. The wait for this dish was on the longer side, but the result was worth it. Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup A standout dish. The soy-based broth is rich and deeply savory, with tender chunks of braised beef--some pieces with a melt-in-your-mouth, jelly-like texture that suggests high-pressure cooking for maximum tenderness. The bok choy, cilantro, and scallions round out the bowl nicely. A side of pickled veggies are recommended as an extra, adding a welcome sour punch that elevates the broth. My only critique: the noodles are thick-cut, and I personally would have preferred a thinner option. It would be great if they allowed noodle customization. --- Overall Experience: While prices are on the higher end for casual Asian fare--$20 for noodles and $13 for wings--the quality, portion sizes, and attentive service help justify it. It's not particularly busy during weekday lunches, possibly due to a focus on takeout orders, which are likely popular among locals. The staff offered me a discount ticket for the next time visit. Parking is easy in the shared plaza lot, and the location is convenient for a quick sit-down meal or to-go pickup. --- Mein St. Asian Kitchen delivers flavorful, comforting Asian fusion with care and hospitality. It's a solid pick in Carmel Mountain, especially if you're looking for authentic Chinese flavors with creative touches. Worth the splurge for a satisfying, home-style meal in a casual setting.

Cant remember what they're all called but they were all good and would 20/10 order them again. Ambiance was also wonderful! But what made this place even better was the staff. We were promptly sat down upon arriving. Servers frequently checked on us and were all so nice. But what really stood out was their empathy. Like i said, my son knocked out. He's 5. He woke up as we were leaving. by the time we figured out what was really upsetting him (he wanted to stay there and eat and wanted the table we were on), we have gotten out of our table and obviously the table was then cleaned for the next guests. So basically my lil one cried, took him to the bathroom bec unfortunately we dont get everything we want just bec we cry. So we went into the bathroom for him to cry his feelings out and be ready to get out. Was he loud? Absolutely. Was i embarrassed? Yes. But it was a lesson he needed to learn and i didnt want my discomfort to hinder that. (Mind you the bathroom was in the middle of the stairs lol midway the lower and the upper floor). So was i ashamed to get out? Yes. But the staff, so empathetic. So nice about it. Told me i didnt need to apologize and that they get it. And that made me feel better as a mama who walked out of there carrying a 5 year old out their door. No judgy stares. Just smiles and understanding eyes. So july 18 2026, 4-5pm staff, you are all so amazing and we truly appreciate it. We hope to be back again when in the area.

Our server was phenomenal and really elevated the experience. She gave great recommendations and even let us sample both the Cabernet and Merlot when we couldn't decide on a bottle of wine. We ordered a variety of dishes: * Spicy Edamame: very flavorful, but definitely on the spicy side so be warned if you're sensitive to heat. * Fire Fire Roll: light and fresh fish, but the seared salmon flavor didn't really stand out. * Orange Roll: also light and fresh, but I didn't really pick up the citrus/lemon zest element. A bit underwhelming compared to expectations. * Salmon Belly Nigiri: very fresh and a favorite at the table. * Crab Roll Special: generous portion of fresh crab. * Yuzu Cheesecake: served with three spoons to share. It tasted like a classic cheesecake, pleasant, but I didn't really get a distinct yuzu flavor. The space is cute and conveniently located in a shopping center with plenty of parking. Overall, the atmosphere is laid-back and comfortable. While the rolls themselves are fairly simple and not especially standout, everything tasted fresh and the service was excellent, which made the experience enjoyable.

The braised pork belly was ok, but the fat had not rendered as well as at some other places so we ate around it. The flavor was good though. The hamachi was probably the best item-tender and tasty. The albacore was standard and a generous piece, but the salmon was a bit tough and my kid who usually inhales salmon tasted and then left the salmon. The wagyu had good flavor but was surprisingly chewy. For $26 I would expect it to melt in your mouth but it was not easy to bite through. The eel was very tender but had a weird taste, and was disappointing. I found myself chewing on a scale from maybe the salmon and was overall underwhelmed by the food. The bill for a soda and the sushi came to almost $150 after tax and tip for me and a 6-year old. Usually my husband and I and my kid go to places with better quality and pay the same price for the three of us. Will not be back.

My husband and I came here for dinner and really enjoyed both the food and the atmosphere. The…read morerestaurant has a modern rooftop vibe in the heart of Downtown San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter, making it a great spot for date night. We ordered the miso soup, spicy edamame, Den Miso pork belly skewers, tamarindo tuna ceviche, seabass serrano, crispy karikari tuna, and mochi ice cream for dessert. To drink, we had the Taiyo Margarita and the Clouds of Matcha cocktail. The spicy edamame was probably the only dish that fell a little short for us. It wasn't bad by any means, but we were hoping for more flavor. The absolute standout was the Den Miso pork belly skewers. My husband and I both took our first bite at the same time, looked at each other, and immediately said, "Oh!" We were genuinely surprised by how juicy, tender, and flavorful they were. There were only two skewers, but they packed so much flavor that we instantly wanted to order another plate. The tamarindo tuna ceviche was fresh, light, and refreshing. The taro chips added a nice crunch without overpowering the dish. The seabass serrano was enjoyable, though it wasn't a stand out for us. The crispy karikari tuna (spicy tuna over crispy rice) is one of my go-to orders whenever I visit a sushi restaurant, and this version was up to par. The only component I wasn't crazy about was the long, thin slice of avocado on top--I personally could have done without it, though my husband actually liked it, so that's just a matter of preference. We finished the meal with mochi ice cream, which was the perfect sweet ending. Overall, we had a great dining experience. Between the rooftop ambiance, attentive service, and several delicious dishes - especially those unforgettable pork belly skewers - we'd definitely come back and would happily recommend it to anyone looking for a great dinner spot in the Gaslamp.

Came here on a Tuesday night and it was not busy at all but half the tables were unbussed, and we…read morewere sat in the corner and it felt like we were forgotten for a bit. Other couple tables around us... Now it was 8:30 and I get it, its late but I felt like the service was just not up to standards.. now as a server myself I understand the closing shifts, not having a busser on the floor but we are big spenders and I felt like a lot of the service was lacking I had to ask for water to get water, wasabi and ginger didn't come out when I asked for it.. the steps of service was off and I just wished the server took more time w us bc it would've made everything so much better. Sake order took forever.. But it's fine bc I get it, it's a Tuesday night, just maybe wouldn't fly with another person. Now the food quality really makes up for it. - For sake, I usually prefer Junmai Daiginjo. I picked the first one listed, but it ended up being a little too dry for me. Our server did mention it was their driest sake, so that's on me lol. Next time I'll definitely go with the lighter option. 7/10 -yellowtail& jalapeños, spicy tuna crispy rice - decent, solid, no complaints 8/10 -Ribeye/ Wagyu: AMAZING. Seriously, so good. Perfectly cooked, flavorful, tender -- easily one of my favorites of the night. 10/10 - tai snapper appetizer- great w the yuzu kosho- garlic crunch!! 8/10 - shoutout to the busser who knew his food! I asked about the fish and the sauce. - the NIGIRI quality was really fricking good, the toro, the tai, even the bluefin aka like wow 10/10 If it wasn't last call I would've ordered more Wanted dessert but everything was out except mochi- this is also fine bc I get it restaurants run out just shows how good this place is Overall, the food quality was absolutely there and is the reason I would come back. I just wish the service matched the quality of the food because with a little more attention, this easily could've been an amazing experience from start to finish.
