Meh.... I had undeserving high hopes for this place that it failed miserably on. While the service was good, the sushi quality was atrocious. The rice was hard and cold. And for folks who are sushi connoisseur, you know that rice is what differentiates a good sushi restaurant from the rest of the pack. It also looks like they used a mold to "roll" the sushi as each piece was blocky with way too much rice. Came here for an early dinner after work, around 6:00. I walked in and was one of only 3 people there, I was offered a table or the bar and chose the bar. I was promptly waited on and ordered three rolls including the: chu toro, the spicy salmon, and the spicy tuna. The rolls came after a reasonable period and all three were good. Each roll came with 6 pieces of a decent size. There was a decent amount of fish in each and the overall flavors were distinct and tasty. My favorite was the spicy tuna but all three were good and worth ordering. The rolls were each $9 which isn't too bad. This place also has a sister restaurant (Sushi Rocks) but this place is much classier (exposed brick, soft jazz, etc) than the other and is essentially priced the same. This would be a great spot for a sushi date. Only downside, and the one thing that surprised me was there was no happy hour, no deals on food or drink at all. read more

This place has the BEST chirashi in the city. The fish is super fresh, and the sushi rice is the most delicious thing ever. I feel like a lot of places that are well known for chirashi has just one or the other, good fish but mediocre rice, or good rice but not a lot of fish variety, etc. Sushi Hachi consistently has great chirashi and I highly recommend! read more

What a deal for Omakase ($54/person) and a great experience. I came for my birthday and very much enjoyed the meal and service. The staff was extremely courteous plus punctual with each course. I believe the Omakase menu changes often. My least favorite was the udon. All other course were amazing. Could you a bit more depth in the broth. First time going there and I was greeted with great energy and appreciate the waiter giving me the option to use my phone to order or getting the physical copy of the menu. I had the salmon avocado roll which I thought was great. It was fresh and well made. I also had tempura udon noodle I love the presentation and enjoyed it very much. The pricing is very reasonable. I thought at first the udon bowl was small but after finishing it I realized it was the perfect portion size. The vegan options are limited but I'm glad that they have a few options for people who are vegan.Overall I enjoyed the atmosphere there and would recommend this spot to anyone. the reason for the low rating is based solely on customer service that we received last night. my family and I have been here several times and normally receive decent to great service. Last night we were seated and started the ordering process through the QR code process. We then asked to move a little further down to be more evenly spaced out from the other two customers who were already there (COVID precaution). However, the hostess seemed to be thrown off by that request and grudgingly was ok for us to move. Once we resumed to order she remembered to ask us for proof of COVID vaccinations. When my elderly mother was able to locate her proof of vaccine they asked for her ID which she did not have on her. We were then asked to leave. read more

First visit was in december 2018 and it hasn't been*too* long since sushi hachi has been around. We were able to take full advantage of a wonderful Yelp Check-In discount: 20% off full tab minus select items (i.e. cocktails). We both ordered the nigiri omakase, but next time I'd like to try their signature hachi omakase where it's a combination of appetizers and seafood dishes, apart from sushi. Our favorite nigiri was the fatty tuna, uni (so fresh), sweet prawn and wagyuni. The cocktails were decent in taste, but beautiful in presentation! We also ordered dessert: icecream & shaved ice with a generous amount of fruits. This is one of my favorite sushi spot to go in DC! I usually get their nigiri omakase with few rolls as an appetizer. Most of the time, their nigiris are fresh and I love their selection of pieces! The reason why I gave it 4 stars is because the uni i had tasted old and wasnt good. It ruined the uni wagyu nigiri piece but other ones were very good! I also tried the chicken karage and it tasted too floury. It wasn't crispy so I was a little disappointed. The restaurant itself is very classy and I love the wet towels they give you! There are plenty of street parking around the restaurant but you have to pay if you're there before 6pm on weekdays and Saturday. read more

I had a dinner with a bunch of acquaintances here cause we love sushi lovers and heard good about it and decided to have a dinner meeting. The atmosphere is modern, upscale, wide open but cozy and comfortable when we entered. The waiter was very kind and knowledgeable. Aftet looking at the menu and recommendation, we placed two order of nigiri deluxe (each 12 pcs of sushi) and clear soup which turned out a fish and mushroom soup that is very fresh and plain healthy. All sushi is amazingly tasty and savory. I can say it is one of best sushi I've ever had in DC and same or beyond quality of Sushi Taro but the price cheaper. Next we had Wagyu beef on hot stone that is also fantastic. You should try this one. After this we tried several sushi roll, spicy tuna, spicy salmon shrimp, anago. All is very good but the anago best for me. Hot sake is prepared well and never cool down because of special bottle. Everthing on the table setting is perfect and well prepared for increasing your appetite. Strongly recommend this restaurant for sushi lovers. read more

I must say, my first time at sushi Hachi was probably better than my second time here. This time, my boyfriend and I got the $52 6-course meal. For the amount that you get, $52 isn't too terribly bad. However, I wouldn't say I would get this again. You get the clear soup first (it had a cute floral fish cake and tofu and mushroom), then appetizers, then 6 sashimi pieces, then 4 nigiri, then DIY wagyu beef, and lastly, dessert. Out the entire meal, my boyfriend and I felt that the best pieces were the octopus from the appetizer and the fatty tuna from the sashimi. The soup was pretty tasty too. For the DIY wagyu beef, it was an interesting experience. We were clearly noobs at cooking it. When we put our first piece of wagyu beef on the hot stone, after 5 seconds, one of our beef pieces were really stuck on the hot stone and we couldn't get it off so it kinda burned, and we asked the server and he kinda made us feel dumb because he kept saying it wasn't supposed to stick and such and didn't do anything about it or show us how to do it. After a few moments of standing there awkwardly at our table, he eventually went to the back and decided to give us butter which did help. I think I much prefer ordering an order of wagyu beef which we had the first time we came and it tasted a lot better than when we cooked it. The texture was not the same either. Overall, you do get a lot out of the $52 course. However, I would much rather pay for individual orders of the sashimi and such. read more

This is a solid sushi spot on Capitol Hill. I've seen a couple of Sushi Hachi's marketing campaigns with the Washingtonian before and in the photos they do a really good job of making a great presentation with their plates. So, I wanted to see if the food was as good as it looks. I was feeling adventurous and wanted to try the sashimi bowl with different types of raw and fresh fish. It was definitely shareable for two people but you'll want to order a roll of sushi as well since it's on the lighter side. The rolls aren't the typical classic rolls you'll find combination rolls so the shrimp tempura roll also had spicy tuna in it as well. Will be going back! read more

WOW. Incredible!! I came with my husband using a Groupon deal and a reservation through Yelp. We were greeted and seated right away (we arrived at 6PM on a Saturday). That seems to be the time when the restaurant starts to fill up because 30 minutes after we arrived, it was a full house. The decor was clean and modern-- it felt like I was in a high class restaurant in NYC. Prices were mid-range (for being a DC restaurant), but would be considered expensive if located elsewhere. My husband ordered the chef's omakase (their tasting menu). It says 5 course, but includes a dessert, so technically, it's 6. I had two octopus croquettes to start with and loved the crunch mixed with the creaminess of the mashed potatoes on in the inside. As an entree I had the blue crab sushi roll. The roll had 8 pieces and were loaded with crab meat. The crab tasted sooo fresh, as if they had caught it that morning-- you could taste the sea. It was so good! Even cut into 8 pieces, I felt like the pieces were quite large and difficult to fit in with one bite. But I'm not really complaining since that just means there's more food on my plate. I'd rather have it that way than have them skimp out on the ingredients. (just a warning in case you're trying to be lady-like when you eat) I had a taste of some of the dishes on my husband's menu. The soup had a heavy dashi flavor, but tasted clean and well balanced. The tempura had a great crunch with a thin batter. The chirashi bowl looked amazing and really fresh. My husband especially liked the scallop sashimi, but didn't enjoy the snapper too much. Out of all the nigiri, he loved the eel. And MY GOD, THE WAGUY BEEF WAS SO GOOD! Probably the best beef I've had in my life so far. When people tell you that filet mignon melts in their mouth, it just means they've never tried wagyu. It tastes 100x better than filet mignon. It was the most memorable dish of our night. We chose the green tea ice cream for dessert and really enjoyed the toppings that it came with, but found that the green tea ice cream was a tad bitter towards the end. I love green tea ice cream before and have had it many times at other places, but found this one to be the most bitter I've had so far. We also had a hot sake with our meal. So overall, I was expecting the bill to be crazy expensive, like about $90-100, but with our $30 Groupon, the bill came out to be only $45 (not including tip)! We came here for my wife's birthday and were thrilled with the choice. This is an upscale sushi place, but that doesn't mean everything is super dressy. It's upscale casual. Tucked away on Barracks Row, this is near our home so we walked here. But you can easily park under the interstate most of the time. Inside the restaurant is austerely decorated, but very tasteful. As night went on the restaurant took on a somewhat romantic feel from its warm lighting and wood surfaces. Service was spot on, superb and attentive without being annoying. I want to devote another sentence to saying how much I enjoyed the service, it was so good to be remarkable. We split a huge amount of sushi. The sushi was really good, probably the best in DC. The portions were not as large as I would like for a high end sushi, but they were really good. It was easily my favorite experience eating sushi in DC and I look forward to coming back! read more

We both decided to try out the Omakase, recommended by our server, and in addition two a la carte plates (wagyu uni sushi and scallop nigiri). The Omakase tasting menu was a bit underwhelming. The first course (chef's appetizer plate) and the soup course (kabocha squash soup) were definitely my favorite. After the first two courses, we were served our a la carte supplements. The scallop sushi was not what I expected, not comparable at all to the fresh scallops I have had at other sushi places in DC. The sashimi and sushi courses were okay - the lean tuna in particular lacked flavor. The smoked sashimi was in theory a cool concept, but neither of us got the smoke-y flavor in the shrimp or octopus. The hot noodle course was udon, which was served in an over seasoned broth. Our last course was a nice touch, creme brulee with fresh fruit and green tea ice cream. BEWARE! My fiance and I both got food poisoning from this place. We ordered a regular chirashi, a royal chirashi, and a spicy tuna roll. We used to love this place and have been frequent patrons but the quality of fish from this place is NOT the same post COVID. There were many pieces of fish that ranged from slightly to very questionable. The worst piece in the box was slightly slimy and had that intense "fishy" smell (the kind you smell at those outdoor fish markets). We didn't even finish our bowls. We knew were were instantly screwed as we both had this lingering "fishy" aftertaste that seemed impossible to scrub out. If you're wondering what the difference between "royal chirashi" and the "regular chirashi," from what I could tell, you get a piece of sweet shrimp, a fried shrimp head, and a small thin fattier piece of tuna. The only thing I'd change about Sushi Hachi is the tall step up into the dining room. Lovely decor, although the tables are set a little too closely together and I overheard more of my neighbors conversation than I would have preferred. The service was very good, with an attentive waiter and several other staff who monitored the dining room to make sure dishes were cleared and water glasses refilled. The waiter was very pleasant, and I'm glad I took his suggestion to try the blue crab tuna tartare! It is a composed dish, with a thick layer of blue crabmeat topped by absolutely fabulous tuna tartare with a quail egg to complete the dish. It was served with cracker-like crisps, and dabs of caviar. Every bite melted in my mouth with freshness and flavor. I also had toro sashimi, which was wonderfully fresh and tender. Again, every mouthful was a delight. The final dish I tried was the shrimp and kambocha tempura roll, which was not world class like the other dishes, but still excellently fresh and flavorful. I will certainly be back to Sushi Hachi, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys sushi. My fiance and I were here for a delicious dinner, and it did not disappoint! We ordered both the regular omakase and the chef's omakase, and I tell you, the more expensive omakase option is totally worth it. Even though every dish in the five courses, except the last, are the same, the additional $9 to get the different wagyu course made all the difference. We started off with a clear dashi whitefish soup (can't remember the fish). It was smooth and refreshing, and worked well as a palate cleanser and settling us in for a long, yummy dinner. The second course was an appetizer round of several different dishes, including a seared salmon sashimi, tempura vegetables, and fried smelt fish with roe. All the different dishes were solid. Next were the sashimi and sushi rounds. Both were great, but the piece le resistance was the wagyu beef. Now here's where the difference is: the cheaper option comes with pre-grilled wagyu with uni on top (two pieces), while the more expensive option comes with 8 or so raw wagyu pieces (although the menu says only 5 pieces, but mine came with more) and a hot stone grill for you to cook the pieces on. And oh my god, the meat was soooo juicy. Of the three sauces provided for the meat, I liked the truffle salt the best, and wished I could have gotten more of it. The omakase deal was really worth it, despite the $50-65 price tag!!! read more

We ordered the agedashi tofu to start; I usually don't eat tofu, but this was so good and filling! Loved the crispy outside of it. Next, we ordered the spicy tuna roll, spicy salmon rolls and the blue crab roll. These rolls were huge and filled us both up! Our absolute favorite was the Blue Crab, so fresh. I was so excited to try this place as I recently moved to Navy Yard. My bf got the omakase and we ordered 2 rolls and 2 appetizers on top which we shared. I would say it was very worth getting the omakase to try many things that's not on the menu also. Although we weren't a hugh fan of the udon and vegetable tempura. It is a good semi casual date night spot. Their price is not expansive for the quality of the sushi and entrees you're getting. Sushi Hachi is one of those random places that I never would've heard of if not for a friend's recommendation. Since I don't live anywhere near Eastern Market, I normally wouldn't head down there just for some sushi, but I'm glad I did try it. The food is good. With a mix of sushi/sashimi and other cold/hot dishes, you can get a pretty decent assortment of delicious bites. If you can't choose on your own, they have a couple options for omakase to take the pressure of decisions off your shoulders. But for a place with pretty decent food and service, they put out deals meant to attract patrons as if they're struggling for customers. I've only been once so I don't know if that's the case, but keep putting out those deals and I'll keep coming. So I guess they're strategy is working! read more
