Seeing Sushi Hachi in one of the Yelp collections I follow, I took my partner here for his birthday. It was very loud, which is no one's fault. But, I guess I thought the pricetag of the place meant it was going to be a nicer environment. We ordered the omakase experience, which was lovely. All the dishes came out at a good pace, and everything we had was inventive, fresh, and yummy. I give three stars because at the end of our meal, our server gave us a little attitude that I didn't appreciate. I had a Groupon for the meal, and the Groupon says to present to your server at the beginning of your meal. I presented it, and my server acknowledged it. At the end of the meal, I paid the bill without checking if the Groupon was included. Unfortunately, it wasn't. The manager helped me receive a refund and then pay again with the Groupon included (I'm not sure why they didn't just refund me the Groupon amount). But, the server approached me and said, very rudely, "Did you expect me to remember your Groupon for you?" I just apologized - the problem was solved. I'm not really sure what that comment did for her. Maybe better to get takeout from here, instead of eating in. But it would def be super expensive just for takeout! read more

The tempura in the alaskan roll is cold. Although they cook tempura fresh for the apetizers they dont for the rolls (aside for the rolls that are deep fried) and that is strange to say the least. Otherwise the tempura apetizer is good but they are stingy with the wassabi not nearly enough is provided for the amount of sushi ordered. read more

Nice place! A little different than the traditional Japanese sushi restaurant that I'm used to. But, the quality of food was very good and tasty. One thing, watch out for that step in the entrance. If you're not careful, you'll either trip going up or do a faceplant on your way out. Better lighting in the entryway would do wonders. Servers were nice, though nothing spectacular. read more

This is such an awesome DC secret. Tucked away behind an unassuming store front you would never guess how upscale the interior is. Not to mention the sushi is excellent and the portion sizes are very filling. I ordered the tuna tartare and octopus. The octopus was grilled to perfection and covered with a mound of tuna! The chirashi bowl is the way to go. Plenty of fish and just the right amount of rice. Next time will have to try the Omakase. I enjoyed a nice dinner at Sushi Hachi. Great ambiance and very friendly staff. We ordered sauvignon blanc wine and the nigiri course. The selection overall was good but had a few misses. The maki and my shrimp nigiri were a bit off in flavor and my date didn't enjoy his tuna nigiri as much. But the other nigiri tasted quite good. The ice cream/red bean dessert was a bit of a letdown as the serving was small and the red bean was very sparse. Overall, we enjoyed our dinner and I would recommend this sushi spot for the Navy Yard area. read more

I read the the great reviews and was excited to try it out. I took my mom and we did the omakase menu. I think the sashimi and nigiri were great. Udon was just okay. I was disappointed in the tempura. It didn't feel as light and crispy as over had at other places and not crazy about it being in these shoestring sized cuts all stuck together. I was most excited about the wagyu beef but it was not as good as i imagined. Great experience but will prob do a la carte next time read more

My boyfriend and I came here for the first time to celebrate our anniversary. We had made reservations and were immediately seated by the happy and friendly staff. They have a QR code on the table that allows you to place your order and pay, basically eliminating the need for a waitress/waiter. We had ordered a lot of food and were worried it would all come at once and not fit on our table, but they were sure to stagger plates to allow a smooth dinner service. The brief interactions we had with staff were extremely pleasant and calming. Would 10/10 recommend to anyone looking for higher end sushi! read more

Presentation of the food was nice, the ambience of the restaurant was nice, but that's about it for this sushi joint. The fish was not bad, but the sushi rice needed a lot of work. The rice texture was too hard and there was not a hint of vinegar and sugar in it. We ended up just picking out the fish and discarding the rice underneath. Something else also bugged us... We were the last couple of tables, and somehow the restaurant manager thought it was a good idea to hold a staff meeting 15 feet away from our table. During the meeting, two of the waiters started arguing with each other. There we were, sitting there waiting for our waiter to come get our credit card so we could get the hell out of there and they were busy arguing over some incident that happened earlier in the night. THE CHIRASHI IS THE BEST!!!!! If you follow them on IG, they will post chirashi specials, so we were able to get our chirashi bowl for only $20 (originally $38). Its kind of hard to top Sushi Prince chirashi but Sushi Hachi had scallop, shrimp head, shrimp, and a lot more variety fish in their chirashi and for $20? That's a steal! We also ordered their wagyu beef which was delicious and their blue crab tuna appetizer... I found the blue crab tuna appetizer to be a little on the blander side. I don't think I would order that again. I loved the wagyu beef though but they should give more sauce on the side. It's not hard to get reservations last minute and service was great. Been here before and it was great but two nights ago I had octopus/ahi app and yellowtail roll and got severe food poisoning. The last 24-36 hours have been hell for me. Coming to DC and looking for decent asian food is like finding treasure from an outdated map your uncle may have given you with no promises of whether the treasure exists or not. And I've gone on a few treasure hunts in DC in search of a sushi place, but alas, no treasure. Well luckily, I didn't have to go on this hunt alone because a friend recommended this spot, with the promise of a good deal, great fish, and a handy moist towelette that expands upon water contact. What I got was better than treasure - instead of gold, I got ocean's currency of gold in the form of uni. The scent rising of wagyu beef seared on a hot stone was better than jewels. Ok I'll stop making analogies of treasure and actually talk about the place now. We came in for a deal that was advertised on their instagram (give them a follow!) that was 12 pieces of nigiri sushi, a beer, and a soup. The place is beautiful - located 6 minutes near Eastern Market metro, and decorated in a minimalist and clean setting. Service was extremely attentive, and food was served at the same time for a decently large party (~ 6). The soup was very pretty - didn't taste like much but the faint taste of the ocean (lol weird phrasing) was definitely there. I wasn't super impressed by the soup, but it's soup. This ain't your mom's chili - but it's meant to be a palette cleanser. A warm up lap around the ring. Let's get to the sushi. The fish came in waves (ha, pun), and with some vegetable garnishes. the first course was maguro, yellowtail, and I believe salmon roe. The first selection was very mild, but the quality of fish was excellent - tender in some, fatty in others, but clean overall and the salmon roe provided the faint sea taste mimicked in the soup, with a little pungency. Next - botan ebi (prawn), kanpachi, and uni - we've moved on to some interesting flavors and textures. Prawn was firm but not overcooked. the kanpachi was definitely more tender than the yellowtail, but provided the same quality. and the uni - creamy, melt in your mouth - encapsulates the taste of salt water air with the crisp contrast of cucumber and seaweed. Next course was lighter - scallop, salmon, and another white fish I couldn't identify - and the scallop was so tender that I could hardly believe I was eating a muscle. The salmon just melted in my mouth. And one I didn't expect for the last course - tuna, eel, and...wagyu beef with uni on top? I couldn't believe it. But oh...this land meets sea thing is so good. This beef tasted like the cow loved his life and lived a very fulfilling one before dying a respectful death to be made into something so heavenly. and top that with creamy uni - made it over the top. We ended on dessert - the creme brulee was perfect with a mild green tea ice cream, the red bean dessert came with a lovely ginger ice cream, and the bingsoo was ok, but a little too light. Came here for my birthday and I was completely satisfied. I ordered 7-course omakase and I particularly loved the sashimi and sushi. It has fresh, delicate flavor and beautifully melted in my mouth. Wagyu topped with uni was really nice and interesting combination - uni was creamy and delicious, although wagyu beef was little bit tough. My waiter also kindly gave me free complementary green tea icecream creme brulee - it was simply breathtaking and perfect way to end my night. Loved my dinner here so much that while I was eating I was already thinking about when I could eat here again. I ordered the chirashi which was a huge bowl with over 12 kinds of fish - one of the rare times where there was more fish than rice, at $38 it's well worth the cost which included uni, scallop, fatty tuna, and other quality pieces of fish. The pickles they included really balanced out the chirashi bowl. I also tried the blue crab hand roll which was stuffed (almost over stuffed) with blue crab in a crisp seaweed wrapper. What a gem! On vacation with the family from Seattle, staying in the Capitol Hill area. Thought we'd try some Sushi in DC. Fabulous location, literally right across from the Marine Barracks entrance. The ordering process was awesome - the whole process was done on your phone, including payment. Had the Toro Sashimi, shrimp tempura, Alaska, Hachi, Volcano, Yellowtail Scallion rolls - went back for more Toro, Hachi and Yellowtail rolls. Kirin Draft for $5.50.....wow! Everything was as good as anything we've had on the West Coast. Service was prompt, professional, and polite. Total bill for three, including tip was less than $100. Solid addition to Capitol Hill's dining scene My husband and I went here for date night & one of our first sushi trips since we went to Japan. We went on a Wednesday night and the place was about half full- definitely not bustling like restaurants closer to Eastern Market metro but not empty either. One pretty cool feature- the chef is a woman! You don't normally see women sushi chefs so we were happy to support the business for this reason, if nothing else. I should preface this up front- my husband does not eat shellfish- basically when we go to Japanese restaurants, he just gets different varieties of the fish- no crab, no eel, no sea urchin, etc. We asked if they would be able to accommodate a shellfish allergy with the omakase menu. They said they would and so we proceeded. At least 2-3 times during the meal, my husband was served shellfish. Luckily, we were able to notice it each time and the kitchen made a substitution, but it ended up resulting in a lack of variety for my husband and diminished the experience for him. We did the omakase with the kobe beef substitution. I won't go into each item that was served as part of the omakase since I'd imagine that it changes based on what's available. Be prepared for multiple courses including courses like a very thin, but palate-cleansing, broth/ soup. Our favorite courses were actually the first 1- the four amuse bouche bites and the last 1- the creme brulee green tea ice cream was delicious- one pro tip- I thought that the top of the creme brulee was actually the bottom of the bowl- much to my surprise when I was done eating the ice cream, the "bottom of the bowl" i.e., the burnt sugar, had another layer of dessert! There was only one bite of food that I actively disliked- it was a sea urchin nigiri with some weird sauce that made me want to gag, otherwise I found the other dishes fine. My husband felt like he was served the same three types of fish over and over again, and felt a bit worn out by the end. Overall, the price felt a bit high for what we were getting and given other options on the hill, we'd be unlikely to go out of our way to go back. read more

The kampachi crudo is a MUST ORDER. The rolls are also solid, and most of the nigiri are good. Shockingly, I wasn't a fan of the uni nigiri. I honestly tried to avoid writing a negative review for a place during lockdown when everyone is struggling but I tried emailing and instagram messaging this restaurant to let them know of my bad experience and they've just avoided me so now I feel pretty justified. We ordered from here a few weeks ago and had a great meal, so we tried again last weekend and the sashimi tasted of soap. I have to assume it's due to the chefs washing their hands a lot which would be a plus if I wasn't spending $100 on a takeout for two people just to have it be inedible. On top of that our order was wrong and on top of that, the ginger on our second delivery was from gross squeezy packet as opposed to the fresh ginger from the first time around. Seriously not worth the money, if we'd eaten the rest of the sushi I'm sure we'd have been sick. Given the positive reviews, I had such great hopes for this place. Unfortunately I left very disappointed. Positives: the food was terrific. I ordered omakase and the chef did a good job providing a diversity of dishes that all complemented each other. The fish was fresh and flavorful. Ambiance was a little loud but otherwise enjoyable. Negatives: SERVICE, SERVICE, SERVICE. Although we had a 7pm reservation, we were left waiting for 15 minutes, until 715, despite seeing several open tables. This would ordinarily not bother me, but I witnessed several parties of the same size (2 people) who came after us were seated before we were. I was told twice that they were cleaning our table as we waited, no apology. After being seated, everything was going smoothly until the smoked sashimi dish. We finished the course and waited 20 minutes until I had to flag a waitress that we hadn't receive our next course. She skipped the nigiri dish and brought out the soup. I informed her that the dishes were out of order, received no apology, she took back the soup, we waited another 10 minutes, finally got the nigiri, then she brought out a soup that was cold, which I assume was the original dish brought out by mistake... again no apology. I'm usually very understanding when mixups happen but this was over the top. I won't be going back, which is a shame because the food itself was excellent and I love supporting new restaurants. read more
