Instead of acknowledging that I was given incorrect information, I was told I should have specifically requested soy sauce when ordering. The food was bad, but the way the situation was handled was even worse. I've passed by Osaki dozens of times and finally decided to give it a try today. Unfortunately, it ended up being one of the worst restaurant experiences I've had in a while. When we arrived, the hibachi stations were unavailable because they had been rented out for a private event, so we sat in the regular dining area instead. Before ordering, I specifically asked our server if the fried rice was made to order. He told me yes and even explained that the fried rice was prepared the same way, with the only difference being that one was cooked on the flat top and the other in a wok. That turned out not to be true. The fried rice that came out was honestly the worst fried rice I've ever had. It was extremely bland and tasted like steamed rice with melted butter. There was no noticeable soy sauce, salt, pepper, or anything that made it taste like fried rice. I politely let our server know that the rice was bland and that there was no way it tasted like it had actually been fried. He took my plate back and later returned saying they had added soy sauce. The rice tasted exactly the same. Eventually, someone else came over and explained that the hibachi fried rice is actually PREMADE. That was especially frustrating because I had specifically asked whether it was made to order before ordering it and was explicitly told that it was. What really made the experience worse was being told that I should have ordered the fried rice and requested that soy sauce be added. Somehow the situation was being presented as though I had ordered incorrectly. I shouldn't have to know that I need to specifically request soy sauce in fried rice, especially after asking how it was prepared and being given incorrect information by the server. If the server had simply told me from the beginning that the hibachi fried rice was premade because the hibachi area was unavailable, I would have ordered something else. Instead, I made my decision based on information that turned out to be false, and when I brought up the problem, the response felt more like excuses than an attempt to make things right. I really wanted to like this place because I've driven past it so many times and had always been curious. Unfortunately, after this experience, I can't see myself coming back.
