I'll bump it down to 3 as we came in with a party of 4 and they wanted to give up 2 seats so they made us split up our group and made the other two wait or they were going to give up our seats! Not cool! Thankfully people next to us left shortly to allow us 4 to sit together. A strong word of caution. Do not come as a big group as this restaurant is very small and setup around the train track! We ate here twice during the week. Once for dinner and once for lunch. Price per plate didn't change. The pro's: Sushi pricing was decent for Banff Freshness was decent Salmon was fresher than the tuna! Saba (Mackeral) was quite tasty Very quick as it's served "AKA dim sum style" butt rather pick what you want as the train rolls around. They served low sodium soy sauce location just off Main street Banff You sit right in front of the sushi chef so you just ask him to prepare what you want Restaurant run by Japanese people (not Vietnamese, Chinese or Korean) The cons: Sashimi and sushi rolls were cut a bit small - especially for the price selection of rolls was limited. selection was somewhat limited to the usual fried (dumplings, squid, potsitckers), fresh sushi and nigiri rolls, mayonnaise laced rolls. lunch plates were priced same as dinner :( Air seemed stale (as in too many people for a small room) A fly buzzing around (I know it's fall season but little attempt to kill it) If you crave the sushi in Banff it's an okay pick. Tried this place over the long weekend while we were in Banff. Overall we enjoyed our visit - I thought the train that goes around was very cute! Most of the sushi we had was very fresh - I would order sushi that is more on the popular side (ex. salmon), because we found that a few did not taste as fresh as others and we guessed it's because it's been stored for longer than others as it is not ordered as often? If that makes sense. However, overall, we liked the sushi and I thought the price was very reasonable. One down side is that if there is something you want, but it is already on the train, they won't make you a new one whether you like it or not. I wanted to order the deep fried squid and baby octopus, but they were on the train.. but for who knows how long? Luckily, we visited at dinner time and the sushi chef was continuously making fresh rolls and sushi so we could grab it as soon as we saw it being placed on the train! You can also ask for specific ones if you'd like something and you don't see it on the train. They also don't take reservations, so I would try to go at an off-time if you don't like waiting. We went at around 9pm and still had to wait about 10-15 minutes. The place is pretty small, so it is understandable. I wouldn't go here as a big group because it is probably impossible to get seats together. read more

I love the Banff Sushi House, or as the locals call it Sushi Train. I tried to go at least once a week, even if I could only order take-out. Sushi Train is a small sushi restaurant where a model train circles plates of sushi around the sushi bar. The train even has tiny passengers. There are less an twenty seats, but you can pick a plate and start eating as soon as you're seated. If it's full, definitely try to wait as it's more and worth it. It's a great place to grab a quick meal. The sushi is excellent here and I would come just for the surf clam, BBQ eel, shrimp, and tuna maki. My absolute favorite offering is the potato croquette. I would often stop in and pick up two to eat on the way home from work. The prices are very reasonable, and a handy guide details which plate colour corresponds to which price. If you don't like what the little train carries you can ask the chef to make any request. I had them whip up a potato croquette maki once and it did not disappoint. Sushi Train is both a locals and a tourist spot. It's whimsy and charm can't be surpassed in Banff. I wish all my meals were brought to me via tiny model train. read more

While visiting Banff for the afternoon we were craving sushi and a friend suggested Sushi House for lunch. Located off the Main Street the place is tiny but has a great energy. Facing out to a side street the dominant feature is a U-shaped sushi bar with a CP train that runs around the bar carrying sushi prepared by a sushi chef who is located inside the U. It is a fun way to enjoy sushi as the train, a model of one that originally ran through Banff carries the sushi past each diner. Prices are determined by the color of each plate and diners just reach out what ever piques their fancy as it rolls past. Their is a sushi menu so you can figure out what is on each plate or you can just ask the chef and he will explain or make anything specific. Because it is a sushi bar the options are limited to the more typical types of sushi. Everything is fresh and although a tight space it is a fun experience for a quick lunch. read more

Before I explain the food let me first tell you how the restaurant works. We walked into the restaurant expecting it to be your classic "sit down" restaurant. But no!! You come in, notice it is pretty small and then see there are no actual tables. It's counter seating in the shape of a circle with the sushi chefs in the middle. They are making different types of sushi on the menu then they put them on the tracks of a mini train that is driving around in the circle. Anyone can take the sushi and they are on different colour plates, each colour representing a different price. Now for the food! Well, it was amazing!! The sushi was so fresh, and if you didn't like what was going around the train, you could ask the chef to make it. They didn't have cucumber rolls on the menu but someone requested it and they made it! Some of my favourites were salmon avocado roll, marinated tuna, gyoza and the torched salmon! I would love to come back to this place and would definitely recommend it! read more

Upon walking into Sushi House, I was taken aback at how small the place was. It must seat 15 at most. This restaurant doesn't have any tables, everyone is seated around the sushi train (although menu items are available). Most of the items on the train were fresh and I really liked the texture of the rice and rolls there. We tried a few dishes including salmon rolls, yam rolls, spicy tuna rolls, tempura shrimp rolls, and gyoza. We were a bit disappointed with the gyoza - we saw it travelling on the train upon our arrival, and asked if they could make us some fresh gyoza since it looked like it had been out for quite a while. Wasn't expecting much, but pleasantly surprised! Sushi was fresh, good taste, seemed like he was in a rush so the rolls weren't very tight as they broke apart easily but flavours were good. A bit expensive, plate of 2 ikura sushi was $7.15! read more

First a note about the setting. The dining area is a small room the size of a living room surrounding the model train that carries the sushi around. Total max seating is perhaps 20-25 people. In the middle of the train tracks is the sushi kitchen where you can watch the chefs prepare the dishes. Food quality was surprisingly good for Sushi in Banff. Perhaps 3.5/5. This is meant to be a get in, eat quick, get out kind of place. If you're looking for a place to have a meal and catch up with an old friend, perhaps this isn't the place for you. Quiet small place with super friendly staff, he knew right away we were veggie and was super cool about it. Sushi here was great, decent price, good quality. We ordered avocado, veggie spring rolls, cucumber avo, asparagus avocado, and yam roll. Very tasty, and that was my first time which a sushi bar offered to let us custom make sushi rolls. There's a train that goes around and if everyone is custom ordering or ordering from the menu the train get filled with exactly what you want (Maybe we got lucky, everyone was ordering yam rolls.). I called this restaurant twice before coming to confirm that it was "all you can eat." Indeed it was not. The sushi was okay to taste, but overpriced. For 2 adults and 2 children the bill came to $132 (without tip). The sushi train is a cute concept- but lacking in variety and the quality of what they did have was sub-par. A nice novelty of a place and the kind of thing you really would want in a tourist location. I love the train but hate the guy that steals the piece of sushi I was eyeing as the train came around the corner! Seriously this place is very tiny but it feels comfortable and is genuinely busy.
