Pepper with no steak , Thanks Sushi Iwa !

Everytime I order from Sushi Iowa there is something missing in the bag and there is a big taste difference. I stopped going because I asked the lady after driving an hour if my items where in the bag and she said yes , the order was 75 dollars and when I got home I called and they where like thanks for driving and hour here is 10 dollars for your inconvenience. Basically laughing.

I dined at Sushi Iwa in Clayton a few weeks ago. I was looking for a new/closer sushi spot and came across this while doing some research. The reviews are surely conflicting; I really wish Yelp would allow 3.5 stars but I went with 3 for now. Sushi Iwa is located in a shopping center and is very no frills. The atmosphere is very low key and casual. I loved the music choice and it wasn't too loud. I sat at the bar and the man working behind the bar as well as my server were both incredibly friendly. I started with a glass of wine and water; they have decent wine and drink options which was nice. I noticed a few things about the menu binders, whilst they feel a bit dirty and seemed like they have been through the ringer, I truly appreciate the photos for each dish and sushi roll; this is always so helpful! There are many menu items and I tried a few, as I love trying numerous options at a new spot! I started with the Miso soup & summer rolls; the soup was perfect and rolls were very fresh and yummy! I will say, they should probably add one more piece of shrimp as the shrimp is slightly thin/small, and the actual roll is huge and stuffed with the veggies/noodles. Very good though. Typically these are served with a peanut type sauce and when asked for that, I was provided a side of actual peanut butter, which was a bit odd. However, I mixed yet another sauce (the sauce they use for the gyoza) with the peanut butter to make it myself and it was good! I then opted for a side of the Lo Mein noodles as I love some Lo Mein. This was a huge side so I ended taking most of it home. Nothing fancy, just noodles but still yummy! For my two rolls, they were also huge but pretty good. I ended up giving the rest to my husband when I got home, which was most of each roll. They have BOGO rolls so you can't quite just get one! They have a LOT of rolls. I couldn't recall the two I ordered but I did post them below. I would recommend this spot for a no frills/decent sushi spot/experience!

Let me start by saying we always come here the food is always excellent and fresh. The restaurant is always clean. It is Wednesday, and they close at 9:30pm. We walked in at 8:58ish. We always get the exact same meal so we knew we would be quick to order and not drag ass and there was only 4 other people in the restaurant at this time (basically empty). We were seated but then told by our nice waitress that the manager Asian man had asked her to tell us that next time we needed to come in before 9pm or we may not be seated. I immediately stated that there isn't anything on the door that says that, and if that's a rule they have they should post it on the front of the door, she agreed with me and took our order anyways. Also we had a newborn baby with us, who was asleep the whole time. We tidied up our table for them, stacked all the dishes, wiped the table with a wipe and even paid our bill all before 9:25pm. I write this to say shame on the manager for making a waitress tell us that. That is something a manager should atleast say to the customer. And It's not like we walked in at 9:20. We immediately ordered and immediately left before 9:30 anyways. I feel like we were kind of singled out because we had a baby with us, and probably thought we would take a long time or she would be loud. Disappointed this time, but with the manager only. Don't be so uptight next time. And for a manager that is so concerned about closing on time, you left the open sign on after closing time.

This sushi is delicious and it's BOGO on all rolls on the menu, hard to beat that! The prices are a little bit more expensive, probably to make up for the BOGO but they aren't outrageous, they range from $16-$25 per roll. My friend and I went for a Sunday lunch and everything was great. It was nice and quiet, with a few tables filled. I ordered the Loren's roll and the Oh Happy while my friend ordered the Crunchy and an order of pad Thai. We had also ordered the edamame which never arrived but was taken off of our bill once we let our server know. The rolls came out super quickly and the pad Thai followed shortly after. I will definitely be back to try more of their rolls and their hibachi I was looking at on the menu as well.

My youngest and I came on a Saturday and it was starting to get busy. Most of the people waiting were Door Dashers and others had call in orders. We were seated within 5-7 minutes and that was because I opted to wait for a booth. Our server was attentive and helpful with any questions I had about the menu. They offer BoGo sushi which is always a plus in my book! My son ordered from the kids menu ( chicken lo mein) which was way more than enough for him and i to share. I ordered the American Dream and Sexy Girls specialty roll, and pad Thai, which comes with soup or salad, I chose hot and sour soup. The soup came out rather quickly and was flavorful. I have a habit to let servers know if my son's food is ready before mine, feel free to bring it out first. When she bought his food out I honestly thought I had ordered something else because it was a lot of food for it to be a kids meal. He didn't waste time enjoying it and I was able to grab a few noodles to taste and everything was good and hot. My sushi came out soon after and it did not disappoint at all. If not mistaken I believe it was about 8 rolls each. Needless to say when my main course came out I didn't even touch it bc I was absolutely full! Between the soup and sushi I had plenty. Everything was fresh and made to order. You can actually dine at the sushi bar and watch them make it in front of you. The only reason why I didn't give them 5 stars was because the cell service in the building was horrible! I had a few phone calls that every other word was scrambled, we couldn't get on the internet and I couldn't call out even with showing 3 bars on my phone. I honestly thought it was my service bc they are a hit and miss sometimes but I asked one of the servers and they mentioned it was the building itself. Service is not good at all in there. Overall the food was delicious and we now have a go to for our bogo sushi.

    This is what I ordered.

We ordered two Crazy Rolls, which were packaged in the same container. Why not separately? We also ordered The Korean BBQ Spare ribs. I wasn't impressed with the service, presentation of the sushi and there wasn't much here to rate above a 3 star. The sushi didn't taste fresh, and it was falling apart. Very hard to eat and enjoy it because of how it was packaged for to go. What I ordered looked amazing on the menu, but it was a different thought and taste after opening and consuming. The Korean BBQ Spare ribs are what we enjoyed the most. Besides that, there isn't much more here.

Red Curry with Tofu and brown rice

First time in Clayton and wanted Asian food. hubby wanted sushi but I wanted Thai. Found this place! They have a large menu with Korean, Thai, Japanese and Chinese. Something for all taste buds. Daughter order Kimchi Udon soup with Tofu and Veggies. I ordered Red Curry with Tofu and brown rice, hubby order Sushi and Sashimi lunch combo. Great portion size. They were busy, so service took a bit longer than normal but the server was very friendly and warm.

Great sushi restaurant in Clayton. I moved to Clayton over the summer from Raleigh and knew I had to find a good sushi restaurant. Obviously I moved during the COVID when many places were only doing takeout so I haven't eaten inside the restaurant. It's located conveniently on Highway 70 in a shopping center that has many other businesses and restaurants (it's near the Lowes' Foods). Like many other sushi restaurants, Sushi Iwa offers BOGO sushi. There's a large variety of sushi rolls to choose from. They have an app that you can use to order and I love it! I always use the app. It's helpful and convenient and you can pay ahead for your order. As a side-note, when ordering 2 sushi rolls for BOGO you will need to initially choose the more expensive roll and then choose the cheaper roll in the options when you order if you are ordering rolls that have different prices. When you order off the app you receive a confirmation email that tells you an approximate time that your order will be ready. The first time ordering, my time was changed and I received an update email of the time change which was helpful as well. When you arrive just tell them your name and they'll bring your order. The restaurant itself is not big, but has a nice bar area and tables/booths around the restaurant. The sushi was delicious! I've also had the lettuce wraps and edamame which were also good and great portion sizes! The price is reasonable for the quality and quantity as well. I haven't tried the other menu items, but I plan to! I highly recommend checking it out!

BOGO rolls - Fantasy Eel (front), Rock n Roll (back)

First off, there aren't many Asian restaurants in the Clayton area...at all...so I was super excited to see that Sushi Iwa was here since I'd been to their Apex location before! The food is a bit hit or miss - our entrees (Drunken noodle and Imperial chicken) were alright, but we're not planning on getting them again soon. I will say, the portions were GIGANTIC which was good since they were each on the $15-20 range. The BOGO sushi is what you should come here for. The picture menu makes things both easier and harder to decide, if you're indecisive like me! We ended up getting the Rock n Roll and the Fantasy Eel Roll. Both complimented each other nicely, with the Rock n Roll being a fresh roll and the Fantasty Eel one being a cooked one. We're excited to go back and try more rolls! Service was also good and friendly. The restaurant was fairly busy on a Thursday night, but we could still easily grab a table. Parking was super easy as it was in a strip mall.

I ordered the lo mein, bamboo flounder fish, and a side of fried rice. Unfortunately, the lo mein was extremely greasy, the fried rice was overly salty, and the shrimp was hard, overcooked and not fresh. When I informed the waiter that I would not be eating the lo mein due to its condition, I was told that I would still have to pay for it and that it did not matter whether I liked it or not. He initially refused to remove the dish from my bill. After eventually taking it off, he told me that he never wanted to see my face again as I was leaving. What disappoints me most is that I genuinely enjoyed this restaurant and had been a repeat customer. The decline in food quality combined with the way my concerns were handled has left a very negative impression. Unfortunately, I will be taking my business elsewhere.

The staff told us we couldn't because our friends had already eaten, even though the rest of us were planning to order.
