We arrived pretty early before 6pm, but still waited for 1 hour to get our food - making a reservation would be a good idea, especially on the weekend. We waited for a while to even get seated, as the restaurant was packed. However, the restaurant is very COVID-conscious and ensures all of their customers feel safe. Staff are pleasant as well. Had a little mishap with our online order but they were very attentive to us - especially with managing all the other curbside pick up orders they had. We ordered online but were told it got "stuck" in the system so we had to wait another 20ish minutes which really wasn't too bad. To handle each order, they would run in and out to hand deliver each package and some people also went inside to dine in. The sushi was good and they were really creative. I'm not a big fan of cream cheese myself, but the double six roll was a good sampler with a different topping on each roll (6 total). I've had takeout and delivery that I didn't really enjoy from this place but the times I've visited the restaurant and sat up at the sushi bar I've been treated to very fresh and tasty fish. The primary thing that I don't really like as much is I think their rice is under seasoned so I haven't enjoyed any of the rolls I have had from them. However I have definitely enjoyed their nigiri sushi. The interior is a bit of an enjoyable throwback to old school 90s sushi bars where I grew up. The service is always kind and helpful. This is my go-to Sushi restaurant when I'm home. If I know I want some reliable sushi at a decent price, I will always come here. Sushi King is my comfort restaurant. The staff here are all very nice, always make you feel at home and you're dining with family. I'm almost 100% sure they remember my name and really any regulars but I am 110% sure they remember the faces of regulars. Now the interior is small but very cozy to me, they've been making small renovations recently to have cleaner spaces which I highly respect since this restaurant has been in this area for quite a while now. Everything is very clean and gives you that warm home-y feeling but still maintaining the optimal temperature to enjoy sushi. The food also arrives pretty quickly, I remember there were times I could walk in, enjoy a full meal of miso soup, sushi and some kind of ice cream for dessert, pay the check and be out within an hour. You could eat that quickly if you wanted to, but there were also times I've brought friends here and sat for much longer. For the price, the sushi here is very good. I always get a sushi or sashimi moriawase because I like the variety of types of fish you get: Tuna, Salmon, Yellowtail, Japanese Flounder and Sea Bream are what usually on the sashimi moriawase with similar sushi varieties. If given the opportunity, I would highly recommend their salmon belly, flounder and sea bream nigiri. My all time favorites at any sushi restaurant and especially here. They also sometimes carry more expensive fish like Toro or Aji. Overall, I have been coming here for years and will continue to do so. This isn't for food. This is for crappy time management + service. We made an appt for 730, upon our arrival, host said please wait. So we complied and waited... time just goes by when you're chatting with friends. It became 8pm. We sat down and the waitress asked "what drinks do you want?" We all saw "Bubble tea" sign on their bar, large and nicely written. We ordered bubble tea but the resistance that we got was incredible. When we said bubble tea, she shook her head.. we asked for bubble tea menu, she didn't have one and just listed flavors on the top of her head. no big deal we all found a flavor and said it to her in a condensed manner. We could ALL tell that she was NOT interested in making bubble tea. that's fine, then DONT have that cute chalk written up sign flashing at the bar. Then, no one ever came back... we sat there til 8:28pm with the sushi roll paper menu filled out with what we wanted to ordered. No acknowledgment whatsoever. We decided to get up and go to a different restaurant since we were all starving. Nice sushi restaurant in Columbia, Maryland. We enjoyed the chicken teriyaki dinners (around $19), Volcano Roll (around $11), Spicy scallop roll (around $10) and vegetable tempura. Everything was tasty. Both the rolls were rather small in portion, a few pieces less than what I'm used to getting. However, I'm comparing with quantity given in WNY sushi restaurants. My daughter commented that Wegman's sushi bar at home in WNY offers more in quality and quantity. She may be right. These folks are absolutely wonderful people with hearts of gold. The family that owns it treat you like one of their own. Their hospitality is top tier. We just had a little date night there and the food was delicious. We had the vegetarian roll, samurai roll, tempura roll, and volcano roll. All were delicious and well made. The sushi quality is above the standard for most sushi places. The prices will reflect that but it is worth it. They have a very unique selection of specialty rolls with all kinds of main proteins. My younger brother has been telling me about this place for quite some time so for his birthday, I decided to surprise him by us coming here. Because it was a weekday, a reservation wasn't necessary but I made 1 anyway. Sushi King is nestled in a small private area of businesses off of Dobbin Road next to the MVA. They offer a huge variety of sushi options and accommodate to anyone, as myself and my brother who have a food allergy. The manager was so attentive and so sweet, he made sure all knew of our allergies and service was prompt. We were also offered gluten free, lesser sodium, and regular soy sauce options. We started off with their specialty rolls in which I ordered the amazing Crispy Roll and my brother ordered the Spicy King Crab Roll. We then tried a few of the rolls that are more common like shrimp tempura roll, a volcano roll, and tuna roll. These are much smaller in size and not as filling as the specialty rolls. I ordered the Ozeki Hot Sake which was really good and comforting. After we finished eating, the lovely ladies all came together and serenaded my brother with a Happy Birthday song and ice cream dessert. I didn't get to try because that would have been an oddly-interesting combination with my sake beverage lol. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Sushi King between their excellent service, pure kindness and their specialty rolls and sake. Great place for family or a date so will be returning soon. read more

I was so excited to come here- I had done my research on sushi restaurants and wanted something solid with quality food that was above and beyond your neighborhood sushi dive. Regrettably, my party had mixed reviews on the food quality. Let me first say the wait staff were, in general, attentive and friendly. Our waitress had a little trouble getting the order correct, but it may have been due to the confusion of our not being familiar with Japanese food. The food came and we consumed and evaluated: pretty good miso soup and edamame. Regrettably, from there it went down- the beef and chicken teriyaki was ok, although my folks said the beef was so gristly they wouldn't even feed it to the stray cat that comes around their house. Finally, the hardest blow- I ordered the deluxe mixed sushi assortment roll. Every sushi piece, with the exception of the salmon, was old and dry. No flavor, too chewy, and very obvious it was two or more days old. The salmon was better, but honestly, no better than what you'd get in Wegmans (which, to their credit, they have decent sushi, but they're not a sushi restaurant). Even my daughter's California roll was "just ok" (according to her and me). I weep to say that the only saving grace was they had a cold Sapporo Black beer for me to wash everything down. This beer is great, and it was served at the right temperature- it really hit the spot to finish off with this. But the sad story here is an over-rated restaurant with premium prices, and mediocre to bad sushi- good service and great beer doesn't change my three stars. read more

This is an old school sushi house, but its part of the charm. I knew this would be good cus on a Mon night, the biz owner still has regulars. She was so sweet when i got intrigued by the private dining tatami room for an elevated dining experience. The starts were miso soyp. Standard but and i got a subtle sweet note on the end. Next was the chix karaage, it was wet battered and gave it extra crunch that coated the chix whole piece. The sushi is not cheap at $20 for the two specialty rolls, but great cuts of fish and quality was superb. The double six roll was unique in that it was tempured, but the fish (6 different types!!!) was placed on top to preserve flavor and texture. Both our holiday and sashimi rolls were delicious! The holiday roll has spicy tuna and I've had many spicy tuna rolls from other restaurants but this one was extra flavorful. Normally, when I head here for dinner, I'm trying out their specialty rolls, so I was curious how the "basic" handrolls would compare. Saw very fair pricing of $5-8 and put in an order online for a lunch pick-up. For those who've never been, Sushi King prides themselves on serving eclectic rolls - it quite literally says so on their menu. Happy to share that they incorporate this into their regular rolls too. For the Philly Roll, they add red onion to give it some crunch and flavor, and for the spicy tuna roll, the tuna is minced and mixed in with scallions. These small additions really add more oomph to these choices. My only wish is that they were bigger in size. Four rolls later and I was still hungry (but that might just be because I love sushi and can eat a whole boat to myself haha) read more

We were inspired by the reviews to try this place despite already having other places nearby we like. This was a big disappointment however. To sample a new place I like to order a variety of dishes to see what they do best. Our order consisted of entrees, appetizers/sides, maki, and sashimi. I would say they faired best in the appetizer category with the kani salad being one of the best items (though veryyy small for $11!!) and the shumai being okay. The pickled vegetables were okay with the carrots being good but the rest being mediocre. Some of the vegetables seemed to be barely pickled. We only got tonkatsu in the entree category and this was subpar. The cut was very dry and mostly chewy with only a few spots being somewhat tender. It was thick and did not seem to be pounded. The breading was also not that great. It was crunchy in spots but quite flabby and overly thick in others. While it wasn't awful, it was below average for the various katsu I've had in the area. As for sashimi we got the spicy scallop sashimi. This was a huge shocker. The scallops were chopped into small pieces as they were probably trying to hide the poor quality of scallops they used. Then they were drenched in an equal amount of sauce that was not spicy at all. And then they were placed on top of a huge roll of rice in nori. This dish was sad. For maki we got a squash roll, spicy tuna, rainbow roll, and snow white roll. The squash roll was the best of the bunch but very small and not well wrapped; they easily fell apart. The rainbow roll was second best but the fish was lacking flavor. The spicy tuna and snow white roll both were made with very poor quality tuna that had a very strong fishy taste and odor. The spicy tuna was also not spicy at all. Needless to say we will be going to one of the other more passable japanese/sushi restaurants in the area. This place seems to have many fans from the many years they've been a staple in Columbia but as someone who does not have nostalgia for the place and has only tasted the food, I was disappointed. read more

My fiancé introduced me to this place when we first started dating (3 years ago!). I am originally from VA, so like many others, I thought this was the all-you-can-eat Sushi King. I had a slight moment of disappointment, but thought I would give it a try. This became one of my favorite sushi restaurants! My absolute favorite roll is actually one of theirs that I cannot find anywhere else - the sashimi roll. It is an assortment of raw fish wrapped in rice paper. If you are about texture combinations - you've got to try this one. The fish and unique texture of the rice paper make a melt in your mouth combination! LOVE that roll. And in conclusion..... It's hard for me to give a bad rating because everyone who works here is so nice, but I also can't say that we enjoyed the more important things, which are food and ambiance. Let me start with the ambiance. When we thought about going out for sushi I remembered the last time we came to sushi King a few years ago and thought "I liked that place because it is nice inside and has a nice dinner atmosphere and not bright lights." That's not what we experienced this time. First it was way too bright, which makes everything else so apparent. It was right after the dinner rush so tables were not aligned, there was food and trash on the floor (don't get me wrong it wasn't "trashy" at all, just that when the lights are bright you can see everything). I just think so many reaturant managers don't comprehend ambiance and how light plays such a massive part in it. If the lighting is too bright, you see every imperfection, and no restaurant is perfect, especially after dinner rush. Then the lights down by at least 25% and even if they don't realize it, everyone will enjoy the experience more. As for the food, most of it was good, but we got one of the most expensive rolls and half of it was just inedible. The roll had a shrimp tempura inside and the shrimp tempura was not anywhere close to fresh. It was hard and cold and I basically had to just throw all that away and eat the rest. We got an order of shrimp tempura and although it isn't my favorite batter, they were good. My assumption is that they had a pile of them from earlier that they use for sushi, but my issue with it is that they should be getting fresh tempura for their rolls, not using something that isn't fresh. When rolls are delivered to the table the tempura should still be warm on the inside. If not, you might as well go to a cheap sushi spot. Neither of these things are hard for a restaurant to improve. I was arranging a special birthday dinner for a friend and she loves sushi. We wanted a pandemic-safe location, but in February, outdoors is not always possible. Sushi King does temperature screenings when patrons enter. All of the staff are masked, and they have put up some plexiglass partitions to separate tables. I had reserved their little private room. Ordinarily, that is for a party of three or four. One of our party of three was unable to attend, so they still gave us the room for two. It was lovely. There are cushions and it feels more safe and private. We ordered a large hot saki to share. For the sushi, we ordered Explosion Roll, Samurai Roll, He Said She Said, Clear Roll, and Spicy King Crab Roll. All of them were great and the presentation was lovely.
