We have been here many times and with the various ownership changes over the last several years food is either hit or miss. During our recent visit it was unfortunately a huge miss. If it wasn't for the friendly service this would have been rated a 2/5. I ordered the salmon skin appetizer- it was served cold which is kind of gross. Salmon skin should be crispy but this was soggy. We also ordered the salmon bento boxes. Salmon was cooked way too much making it dry and the sauce was tasteless. Dad ordered their chicken bento box. It's like popcorn chicken only it was cold and lacked flavor just like the salmon. Mom ordered their nabeyaki udon which was just ok. Fantastic price and fantastic food! 50% the majority of their menu which makes sushi at Sushi Kuchi a regular family night. I can't go through the effort of labeling every single roll that we ordered but between six of us we probably had 10 or 11 rolls! So so good! Awful' we waited 55 minutes to pick up our take out order, drove home to find out one roll was missing! They also didn't charge us the happy hour prices when I even confirmed that was what we were ordering. My husband went in to pay and he was overcharged by over $25. My siblings and I came here for the first time last night while on vacation. We were greeting within a minute of waiting to be seated. We had a larger party of 7 and were seated within 5 minutes. The one thing we found very strange was the lack of time the server would spend at our table. She would ask if we were ready to order and would be gone before you could ask her something. For that I'm taking away a star because we would have to wait until the next time to ask for something. I guess we're used to service back home where they always ask if there's anything else they can get you. The atmosphere was very pleasant and since we sat outside, the weather was beautiful! The sushi we got was delicious except for the seaweed salad roll. That was terrible but I think that was all of our preferences not the way they made it. The only thing I think truly needs improvement is their chicken in the kids chicken bowl. It was dry and chewy. Overall, it was a nice experience. read more

I used to really love this place, mostly for takeout and delivery. When I first started ordering from here in 2020 , my favorite roll was $6.75. Now it's $12 on DoorDash and their website menu lists it as $17. Those prices cannot be explained by inflation or import issues. It's just plain price gauging. Maybe they were so busy they just wanted fewer customers. They definitely reduced my interest. Sometimes I still order it as a treat but then I end up regretting overpaying for something that simple. This is a great neighborhood Japanese restaurant tucked between the 5 and the beach in Carlsbad. The food is delicious, with all of the Japanese-American staples: sushi, teriyaki, etc.... but there are a couple of Korean dishes which are great, too. I like the kimchi soft tofu soup served in a stone bowl with a side of bulgogi. They've added a patio in the past year and it's awesome that they can add more space. This is a chain around San Diego. They have two other restaurants, but we came to this one. After having bad sushi in LA a few days ago, we wanted to have better sushi to make up for it. We came here for lunch with our kids and they loved it. There's a kids menu but my kids just wanted to eat whatever sushi we were ordering, which I love doing for them anyway. We ordered 4 rolls. There were a section of rolls for 50% and we got a few from the regular price section. -Hot Night Roll -Dragon Roll -Dynamite Roll -Rock and Roll Roll - This was the one that came with fire! My kids loved the sushi and had every last bite. The waitress was pretty quick to replace the wasabi when my husband noticed an eyelash in it. Then for dessert, we had the macaron ice cream. The Green tea was frozen solid but my girls loved it. The mango was a hit with the kids as well. This is a great sushi place if you're in the area and are wanting sushi. And if you're driving through, this location is just off the interstate and easy to get to. Everyone here is very nice and helpful. They all greet you as soon as you walk in :), and their servers and sushi chefs are all very nice. The pieces are very reasonable too! Many of their rolls are 50% off. And they have a good selection of specialty rolls as well. I sat at the sushi bar since I was alone and I ordered the chirashi bowl. It was only $16.95! It came with pieces of salmon, tuna, yellowtail, mackerel, and some other pieces (see photo). Beware of the green stuff in the little cucumber "cup" that it comes with - there is real wasabi in there! The sushi rice underneath was tasty with just enough sweetness. And then they gave me complimentary macaroon Mochi - I got the one with the green tea. The top and bottom of the macaroon was fresh and not stale at all (sometimes they feel stale), and the green tea ice cream was delish! Yum! I left there feeling so stuffed! Where do I start? First off thank you Yelp and others who have left positive reviews on this place, that allowed me to stumble across this little place of sushi heaven. My first visit I was at home in San Marcos and I decided let's try this place before I move. Yes the sushi and flavors are so delicious that it was worth the 30 minute drive to try them. From browsing Yelp I knew that I had to get the Star Wars roll. Now if you come on the weekends it can be crazy busy, so if you're starving get some edamame or something to hold you over. Star Wars has an incredible, but not overpowering spice. The flavors work very well together. When I finished I was so stuffed. But being the fat girl that I am and not knowing when my next visit would be I ordered one more roll. I think the Hawaiian. My second visit I took my bf here even he came down. We got the fried crab, Star Wars, and I think Bad Boy. The crab lacked the true taste of crab due to the breading. It looked so delicious in photos but isn't something I'd order again. Grew up coming to this place and they forgot my order and the appetizers and when confronted about it they said it was coming and then watched the girl put in my order that was initially ordered 45 min prior. Then ANOTHER employee came up to me and apologized for forgetting the orders so I told her that our waitress lied to us. Then ended up cancelling what I initially ordered because I was over it and when they finally brought our spicy garlic edamame it came out powdery and awful and not like how it usually is. Affordable, tasty sushi rolls - I tried the Sensual Pleasure roll (spicy scallops inside, spicy tuna on top). It has some heat so meshes well with my Sapporo beer. It's a bit heavy on Ponzu sauce so if you do not like the vinegary aftertaste like me, order the roll without it. The spicy salmon had roll has a generous serving of salmon strips. The 'spice' is straight chili sauce not mayo so definitely spicy. I typically order one spicy roll & something non-spicy to tone down the burn. Next time I'll order a non-spicy maki salmon or tuna roll. Overall good but not exceptional sushi. Great sushi spot in Carlsbad. Love the variety of Japanese and Korean fusion. Something for everyone to enjoy. Just visited when they reopened outdoor dining. Prolly about 10 tables outside with heaters available. Perfect for our lil dog and my baby stroller to join us for our meal. We started with some vegetable tempura and seaweed salad. Both were pretty solid apps. Generous portions too. They offer lunch specials which were a mix of rolls or sashimi or even some bowls for $13 that includes rice and soup. I opted for their sushi rolls. They offer 50%off "specials" which I think is more of a marketing strategy coz they up price it to $15-18 which comes down to $9ish bucks still a great deal overall. Was pleased of their fish-rice ratio. Fish were all fresh and tasty. Sashimis were also very plump. For the rolls I recommend trying their Star Wars roll, super dragon roll (for eel lovers like me), and hungry roll (comes with popcorn crawfish) all so delicious!! Atmosphere 4/5 It was definitely busy, the atmosphere was very simple and almost minimalistic. I loved the restaurant name lit up behind the sushi bar. Service 3/5 The service was very slow and a bit inconsistent. They were obviously backed up on sushi orders because our normal entries came out way before our sushi ever did. Our server was sweet but there was a bit of a language barr Food 5/5 Food was good enough. The miso soup was a bit flavorless and tasted watered down. We got a good amount of food that's for sure. The Yaki Uson noodle dish with no meat and extra veggies. Everything was cooked great, the size was a lot bigger than I expected it to be and it was very filling. It was definitely a tasty left over for the next day's lunch. My husband got the teriyaki beef plate and devoured it. The meat was seasoned and cooked great, he really enjoyed the slaw that was served with it. For the sushi I wanted to try the veggie tempura roll. It was a nice change for a normal veggie roll, but I wasn't a fan of the sea weed on the outside simply because it was a bit tough and chewy. It didn't break when you bit into it so it was a bit difficult to eat. This roll is huge by the way, but it was cut thin enough where it was manageable. But it's one you wish you could take in two bites Star Wars Roll was way better than I thought it was going to be, everything was perfectly paired and just melted in your mouth. Some pieces were a bit big, which made it hard to pick up with chop sticks, it tended to fell apart so it was a messier than other rolls. Tempura Cali Roll was good, sliced a bit too big but the tempura batter was cooked on point. The sauces drizzled on top added some much needed extra heat. Overall it was a good and simple roll. My real only issue with the menu is the sushi that is 50% off. If I read it correctly it's ALWAYS 50% off unless you get take out then it is 40% off. But it's not really a deal if you are just making up the prices to make customers believe they are saving money read more

How much sushi can one person eat...? I have, perhaps, put this question to the test at Sushi Kuchi too many times to count pre, mid, and post(ish?) pandemic. They're almost always busy. (Because popular?). Plan accordingly for both to-go [and dine-in].The phone can ring for a while or go straight to "this number is busy" message, so I don't advise making that call to order when hungry as that feeling will quickly turn to hangry.
