All their locations are always in a speakeasy vibe with 90's hip hop decor and music blasting. For the 13 pieces omakase, it's $65 with various fresh nigiris. I like that they have a Wagyu and uni piece included as well, but my favorites were the shrimp, scallop, and fatty tuna pieces. Such a fun vibe and great basic omakase. Saltiness, rice texture was extremely inconsistent (and the rice size was tiny!) Background: made a reservation in the Lyft from JFK to the W Hoboken (where we are staying),, for 2 people, on the Friday night of memorial day weekend, at 10pm. There's 4 of us total at the bar (party of 2 that isn't us) - we ordered the 17 piece option ($100/each), the other party ordered the 12 piece. Missus ordered the shiso Southsider and I ordered the Tokyo nights drink special. When we sat down at the bar, two cups of sake were waiting for us! ( I drank them both and her drink since she liked sipping mine more). The ambiance is very disco/ funk like. The vibe here is kinda dark and intimate. But it's a nice place to be with a date? The upside is that it's fast, and it's not terrible for value. The 12 option is not bad for $65, but if you like sake and are ok with more specials, the $100 option for $35 more is honestly worth it (less than $7 / add'l piece if you consider the additional sake) The downside is that it doesn't hold a candle to west coast omakase. Missus and I traded a lot of looks, none of them the good kind. It's possible the missus and I are spoiled with the best sushi in Seattle, but I'mma be honest - this isn't 4.5 stars (or whatever it is now). It's probably a 3 star, generously 4 star (price to value ratio). We came here cuz it was convenient - in the same hotel we were staying in. His creativity and attention to detail make every visit special. He even creates new menus with us to keep our nigiri experience exciting and fresh. Loved the mix of sushi & 90's Hip Hop vibes The Sushi by Bou chain in Hoboken is a hidden spot located in the W Hoboken! There are 90s inspired decor and murals commissioned by local Japanese artist! The interior has limited seating so reservations are recommended but unlike some of its sister stores, there is room to move around and you aren't in anyone's space. I've been to a few locations before and I really enjoyed this one!! Everything about Sushi by Bou lived up to its hype. While the restaurant was in the lobby of a reasonably crowded hotel, you could not see into it, as the windows had been completed blacked out. So, you had no idea what the dining atmosphere would be like until you made it to the other side of the door, where you encountered a small room containing a lounge, a bar, and a sushi counter. There was graffiti on the walls and hip-hop music playing; it was definitely not your traditional Japanese sushi house. However, even with that being said, once each guest took their seat at the sushi bar, we were told to eat each piece of fish with our hands and to make sure that we used a separate hand to grab the ginger slices that were meant for cleansing our palates. That was the eating style found at most sushi restaurants in Japan. The host (and almost MC) of the evening was Destiny, a sweet and friendly young woman that really made you feel like you were dining with friends. That vibe was further perpetrated by the fact that you were dining at a counter with other sushi enthusiasts, making it easy to converse. Though the counter only offered about 12-14 seats, there were two chefs, each composing sushi bites for their assigned half of the table. Our craftsman, Chef Andy, was personable, knowledgeable, and skilled at his art. My friend and I decided on the smaller tasting menu, which offered around 12 courses, with the ability to pay extra for seconds on any of the fish. Our array contained: Hamachi (Yellowtail) Akami (Lean Tuna) Maguro (Chopped Tuna) Botan Ebi (Spotted Prawn) Ikura (Salmon Roe) Bincho (Albacore) Hotate (Scallop) Gindara (Miso Cod) O - Toro (Fatty Tuna) Sake (Salmon) Wagyuni (Surf & Turf) Unagi (BBQ Eel) As per usual, the roe and cooked, marinated items (miso cod, surf & turf, and BBQ eel) were my favorites. It was also not shocking that the scallop and prawn were my least favorites, as I typically do not like raw shellfish. However, my love for all of the tuna varieties took me by surprise, as I was not usually that devoted to that sort of fish. The 12 course menu was a decent amount of food, but everything was just so good that we wanted to order an additional bite. We each opted for another piece of eel, which was just so heavenly with its sweet sauce. My husband and I love omakase and Sushi by Bou is the best of the best. It's a small spot (inside the W Hotel in Hoboken), so making a reservation is a must. Every time we visit Sushi by Bou, the staff is so friendly and goes above and beyond to make it a memorable experience. They offer two packages; The Bougie Omakase is $100 per person (that's what we do, a little pricier than the $60 standard package) and comes with 17 courses, a hand roll, and a small glass of sake. In comparison, the standard is 12 courses (same amount of time - 60 minutes). The sushi chefs are always incredibly friendly, and the fish is so fresh. We also love that the menu changes, so it is always a new experience! Last night, our favorites included the miso cod, striped jack, striped bass, and fatty tuna. Closer to 3.5 stars. My hubby & I have been wanting to try this spot for a while. Quick walk from the train was ideal. Once inside the space was smaller than expected. The music was great 90s/2000s. If you arrive early you may want to wait elsewhere as the waiting area is tight. We arrived 15-20 mins early for our 8pm resy & were offered to sit & drink menus. We were not seated until 812pm. The sushi was fresh and the options were not bad for the price point. Our chef only told us what the fish was, no real explanation or story or chit chat. After we were asked if we wanted any extra pieces. We were shocked when we were told we could only receive 2 extra pieces per person and that our time was up. The experience is supposed to be a hour, we lost 12 mins waiting for other parties and were shorted the rest of our time. We did not receive a full hour along with being told heres the check please move to the waiting area to make room for the next guests. We weren't offered to upgrade our experience either. We did stop by a diner after. Recap for price the food was good. However timing and more customer service needs to be worked on. Allow a 15 min buffer between seatings so you can have more than 2 extra pieces or offer a to go bag for the extras. read more

I had a very disappointing experience at Sushi By Bou. This was honestly the worst omakase I've ever had. With $100 per person for a party of 3, but the sushi was extremely average. Nothing memorable or special. For an omakase at this price point, I expected something in terms of creativity, and attention to detail. The service also fell short. We didn't feel welcomed at all, and the chef did not come across as professional. The jokes felt out of place and more like some you'd expect from a hibachi performance, not an omakase experience. Out of the 17 courses, everything was quite basic, with no standout pieces or thoughtful preparation. Overall, it felt like there was very little effort out into experience. Extremely disappointed. First off, I must compliment the staff. The people that work here are genuine angles. I took my elderly grandfather here (it was our the third time, and I've never seen him so excited for anything else) while we were enjoying our meal he had a health complication. Though it looks like I'll be the outlier with a 4 star review here, its warranted in my opinion as there is definite room for improvement. To get in, you must make a reservation in Open Table. Due to limited seating and days open, its the only way to do it, unless you want to dine in for 1 and then you may get lucky enough to snag something last minute. I will tell you that it is some of the best sushi I've ever had in my life and I've had sushi in many places. Incredibly fresh. I also love how the sushi chef adds a tiny bit of wasabi and a brush of soy sauce (like REALLY good soy sauce) on the pieces for you. Talk about service! I personally had trouble understanding what I was being served because the chef spoke quickly and the music was a decent volume (my style music, 90s and 2000's hip hop so I was jammin). Luckily, there is a list on the wall if you notice it. The space and the timing however, takes away from the experience of it, hence the loss of a star. The challenge is that one seating ends and starts at the same time so they are a little crazed to get ready. They seat you exactly at about five minutes after your reservation time while the two sushi chefs get ready to serve you. Once they are ready, it's rapidfire. You dont really get time to savor the flavors because you can barely keep up with the pace in which they are coming at you. By about 40 minutes, which goes by very quickly, they are just done serving you (like no heads up that you're done, no thank you, no nothing, its just heads down prepping for the next group, which was a bit awkward. We had the 18 piece and wasnt sure if we were done or not). With about 15 mins left in your hour the server and host starts to go around collecting payment. While they tell you you can sit and have a post dinner drink, thats comical because the one couch is already beginning to fill with folks for the next hour seating. I would recommend not getting there too early. The number of seats on the couch barely equal the seats at the sushi bar. When its full its awkward. They make you sit there until they bring you to the bar. Like not stand, you must sit. I felt like I was in elementary school the way they kept coming over and telling me to sit down. There really wasnt much room and people had to move over so we could sit. If you want to drink before dinner, do that in the lobby bar or at the bar at Halifax. They only have one bartender so its unlilkely, unless youre the first 2-4 people for your reservation that you'll be able to get a drink. Because we arrived about 5 mins before our seating, the bartender was so backed up that we didn't get a drink until 15 minutes after service started. So, here it is folks. Why I gave this experience 4 stars. I would go back if someone invited me, though I am not sure I'd run back any time soon. The sushi was incredible and kinda ruins other places for me now haha. The food was all pretty one note with not much differentiation between courses except different fishes. There were no different textures and anything either had wasabi or Nori. I had my first Sushi by Buo experience in the W Hotel location. I was surprised that I was able to come across a 7 pm reservation for 2 on a Friday night less than a week out. After reading and hearing reviews from previous diners about feeling rushed on time, we opted to do the 12 course menu. We got to the hotel 10 minutes before 7 pm and had a seat at their waiting tables. The bartender and runners were slow to come over and give us a drink menu/offer to take our order. We each ordered a cocktail - I tried the yuzu honey bee and my friend got the shiso southersider. I thought the honey bee was delicious! It seemed like the 6 pm seating ran behind a bit since we didn't get seated at the our stations until 5 minutes after 7 pm. Once we got seated, the chefs jumped right in to explain the preferred way to consume each course and the menu. It's a lot of fun getting to see them prepare each course and they let me use the blow torch to cook the beef for the surf & turf roll. I thought everything was delicious and fresh. My favorite piece was the fatty tuna. We opted to order an extra piece of that. The meal goes by fast and it's easy to get through 12 courses in the allotted hour. If I am to go back, I would try the 17 course. There's really not enough time to order more than 1 drink unless you are quickly throwing them back. Our chef was awesome and chatted with us throughout the meal. I wish the other servers had been a bit more attentive in the beginning about refilling water. Overall, it's a cool place and the food was awesome - great date night spot or special occasion. You need a reservation since its only 12 diners each sitting so definitely book several weeks in advance. The food is fresh and a good deal, but some of the pieces can be so overtaken by their sauces and toppings. For instance, we had sea bream topped with onion puree and all we tasted was onion. The ones that are kept more simple are much better. At the end of our tasting, our chef apologized that he didn't have time to make anything extra and we were rushed out to pay our bill so the next seating could start. We were originally seated a few (maybe 6 or 7 mins) late, which is no big deal, because the last group ran over time ordering extras, so why did we not have that same courtesy? Sushi by Bou is an affordable omakase with great food quality. They have two options: Regular Omakase ($60) and Boujie Omakase ($100). My boyfriend and I opted for the latter. Both the food and drinks were delicious. All the fish tasted fresh. My long-term sushi favorites have always been toro and uni, but their miso cod definitely out-ranked them both. The only (partial) negative I have was the time limit. Most omakases that I've been to are usually 2 hours long, which gave me time to really take in each nigiri, interact with the sushi chef, and enjoy the omakase experience to its full extent. But for the price of $100 for 17 courses, I'd definitely recommend trying this place. We also tried their Big Mac Challenge - Finish it all in one bite and you get a complimentary sake. Omakase: 1. Overdue review - I was supposed to write this right after their soft opening during January 2023 and finally I'm getting around to this now Before this, we thought that Sushi By Bou Jersey City was the best one of all of Bou chains (I went to all of Manhattan ones) but I guess this one beat that one. It could be because many of staff members including the manager and sushi chef were transfered from there to this location (not sure if that's still the case now in July so don't quote me on this). A little more avant garde atmosphere inside the W Hotel Hoboken, we got to scribble something on the wall after the meal which was kind of fun (this, also might be just for the opening however) Still strong, consistent quality in terms of food - we got 12 course and opted to order a couple of more extra items like Big Mac (don't skip this one - this is their signature item - wagyu, uni, scallop an otoro) and the name keeps slipping me, it's basically Big Mac plus salmon roe and cavier. These 2 extra items would certainly fill you up if you are concerned whether 12 course would be enough as opposed to 17. $18 extra for Big Mac and $30 extra for the other one. It'd be worth it. I rarely leave reviews, but I write to make sure that there are no more victims like me. When I went to Jersey City, I had a good experience there, I visited Hoboken with my friends. Of course, the food was good, but there were images of three sake bottles on the menu, and the price was 80 dollars on top of them, so I thought it was the price of one bottle, so I ordered one bottle. But when I got the bill after eating happily, I asked because the sake was $180 and the waiter told me that it was $80 for three cups of sake, not the price of one bottle. When I pointed to an image of one of the three sake and asked for it, he didn't explain anything and gave it to me right away. It would have been nice if he had explained to me that it was three different glass of sake, not the cost of the bottle. There was no such explanation on the menu. When I complained, the waiter laughed at me, saying, "How can a bottle of sake cost $80?" I felt so bad, but I paid for it because I drank it. They're cheating people like this and the table next to us was tricked just like us. I hope the people who visit here don't fall for it like I do I will never go again. read more

I made a reservation for one for their last seating and was the only person there and instead of getting me out quickly so they could go home THE entire staff took care of me and made me feel right at home. 1. The service is top tier. Honorable mentions: Anthony the bartender - I told him what I was looking for and he created a perfect drink for me. Mike - the server / manager was so attentive and kind. Chef Sean & Ryan - were so nice and cared a lot about my dining experience. Adrian - went out of his way to sit and chat with me. They were all truly so nice 2. The food - honestly it speaks for itself. It's a great Omakase and dining experience. The staff loves what they do and puts love into the food they are providing 3. Ambiance - it's giving 90s - so they have pictures or Lauren Hill and the coasters or Foxy Brown - it's a smaller but extremely intimate space playing a good variety playlist of 90s - early 2000s, not too loud but just on enough to know you're listening to good music while eating good food. My wife and I were looking for a new sushi place to try in the area and we ended up at sushi by bou. We went for the more expensive of the two Omakase options which came with some complimentary sake and additional pieces of sushi. We didn't regret spending a little extra because all of the sushi was really good, including the extra ones we got. There was everything from prawns to sea anemone to bream, flounder, trout, on and on. I've been to a few other Omakase restaurants and this one stacked up well against them. It might not have been quite as amazing as Sushi Noz, for example, but considering that you save $200 per person or more eating at sushi by bou you really can't beat it. We had the sake flight also and all 3 of the selections were great. The only negative thing I'd say is that they seem to have bookings every hour on the hour, so they speed through each of the sushi courses very fast. It would be nice if you could take a breath between each one or just chill in your seat for 5 minutes at the end without being hurried into side booths so the next guests could be seated. Arrived 15 minutes early and had the option to get a drink. We had a drink in the hotel bar before so we were fine. Ambiance - awesome! Great decor, spacious but cozy vibe. Great music. Decent quality fish but they need to offer a slower experience maybe even 15 more minutes so patrons can enjoy their dinner not just be rushed through each course. Our chef was doing a larger format at the same time and I felt he gave the larger menu party more time and explanation. When I asked if anything was locally sourced he said he was too busy to answer and never even came back to my question. On a more macro level the business model seems to be get you in for fair price but then upcharge on all drinks and any extra order in last 15 minutes. Rather have them extend regular dining menu time with better explanations. I will not return and don't highly rec this place. Caveat emptor. read more
